Josh Shapiro barely escapes assassination; why Trump should call him
Political violence is spiraling out of control.
I don’t care which party you identify with. I don’t care if you like or dislike Donald Trump. This has been building for years, and perhaps we’ve become as inured to it as we have with most mass shootings.
The most prominent example, of course, is the two assassination attempts against the president. On the shooting in Butler, Pa. that grazed his ear, Trump would not have survived if he hadn’t been turning his head to point to a chart. The second attempt was foiled by the Secret Service.
More than 60 years after the death of JFK, a would-be assassin’s bullet nearly changed the course of the 2024 election by taking out the man who would go on to win a second term in the White House. The photo of Trump, with a bloodied face, raising his fist became iconic.

It’s rather embarrassing that the press moved on so quickly after a few days.
Even more cringe-worthy was the way the media provided scant coverage of the man who was determined to kill Brett Kavanaugh in 2022. He had driven from California and was a block away from the Supreme Court justice’s Maryland home – with a Glock pistol, two magazines of ammunition, a knife, pepper spray and zip ties – when he called police and turned himself in.
The would-be murderer just pleaded guilty last week.

This has been going on since President Clinton tried to blame Rush Limbaugh for the Oklahoma City bombing. And since the New York Times blamed Sarah Palin for a crosshairs map never seen by the shooter who killed six people and wounded Gabby Giffords in Arizona. A retrial of her defamation suit is about to get under way.
When a liberal shooter who liked Rachel Maddow opened fire at a Republican baseball practice in Virginia, badly wounding GOP leader Steve Scalise, the finger-pointing began again. Inevitably, each side tries to score political points based on the perceived motive of the shooter.
And that brings me to the attempt to kill Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro on the first day of Passover. The governor, who is Jewish. His family and friends are lucky to be alive.

It is frightening. It is infuriating. It is the epitome of anti-Semitism. The Harrisburg mansion, where Shapiro, his wife Lori and children live, was set on fire, and the 38-year-old arsonist admitted to police that he set the fires.
Imagine being woken up by state police at 2 a.m., with the smell of smoke in the air, and told that you, your family and friends must immediately evacuate. Who wouldn’t feel vulnerable, no matter their title?
The only reason they survived is that they were sleeping in another part of the mansion, which the arsonist had no way of knowing. The building remains badly damaged.

Shapiro was clearly and justifiably angry when he said: «This type of violence is not okay. I don’t give a damn if it’s from one particular side or another. It’s not okay.»
The governor pointed out that it was the first night of Passover and members of the local Jewish community had been celebrating with him in the state dining room. «No one will deter me or my family or any Pennsylvanian from celebrating their faith openly or proudly,» he declared.
Ironically, it was Shapiro who led the investigation of the attempted assassination of Trump at Butler, where a man in the crowd was killed.
The president has been posting up a storm at Truth Social, including messages on Easter Week and Passover, but hasn’t said a word about Shapiro.
I think Trump should call Shapiro as a way of demonstrating that he deplores political violence no matter which party is involved. FBI Director Kash Patel did call, but that’s not at the same level.
The Harrisburg man told police he was «harboring hatred» for Shapiro and had he found him, he would have beaten the governor with his hammer.
His mother told the AP he was mentally ill.

At the Free Press, Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Penn., a Republican who supports Trump, said:
«When Governor Josh Shapiro and I spoke on Saturday afternoon about a potential data center investment in Pennsylvania, he ended the call by noting that he needed to go prepare for an 80-person seder which he was leading. Less than 12 hours later, he and his family were evacuated from the governor’s residence, because an arsonist had set it on fire.

«The pictures of the damage to the residence are horrifying. Yet even more frightening is the trend that this attack is a part of. And if left unchecked, this trend — of using political violence to settle our differences — has the potential to destroy our republic.»

Now, it must be said the security was awful. This guy scales the fence and the state troopers on duty can’t stop him from reaching the mansion? And then let him get away?

As for journalists, we should resist the temptation to say, well, Shapiro wasn’t hurt, let’s move on. A Jewish governor was targeted and nearly assassinated. That’s not a one-day story by any stretch of the imagination.

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee described what he believes is the «best option» for Americans looking to flee Israel amid the ongoing unrest across the Middle East.
Huckabee said overnight, «We are getting a lot of requests regarding evacuating from Israel from American citizens who are currently in Israel or who have family here,» and that there are «very limited» options available.
«As of now, the best is utilizing Israel’s Ministry of Tourism shuttle bus to Taba, Egypt and getting flights from there or going on to Cairo for flights back to the U.S.,» Huckabee said on X. «Not sure when Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv will reopen. Hopefully soon, but even when it does, there will be VERY limited flights with priorities to those who already were ticketed by El Al. Doubtful that other airlines will fly in/out for a while.»
«The Ministry of Tourism is operating buses to Taba. That crossing is further away, but it’s open 24/7. There are some flights from Taba, but there are also options to get to Cairo, and it’s operating normally except to Middle Eastern countries. To get out, it’s the best option for now,» Huckabee added.

Huckabee also said he does not recommend Americans exit via Jordan at this time, as «Flights are not consistent and access across the Allenby crossing has limited hours.»
«All of our personnel from [the] embassy are sheltering in place, but I realize you may need to get people out and back home and not continue to incur hotel costs,» the ambassador wrote.

U.S. Embassy Jerusalem said in a statement early Tuesday morning that it is «not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel.» It also mentioned the Israeli Ministry of Tourism’s buses to Taba.
«To be added to the passenger list for a shuttle, you must register via the Ministry’s evacuation form,» it said.

Horror en Rio de Janeiro: un joven de 17 años organizó una cita con una exnovia y llamó a cuatro amigos para que abusaran de ella
Un caso estremecedor sacudió a Copacabana, en la zona sur de Río de Janeiro. Una adolescente denunció que fue víctima de una violación en grupo en un departamento. La Justicia ya ordenó la detención de los acusados, pero todos permanecen prófugos.

Cómo fue el ataque en el departamento de Copacabana
Según la investigación de la policía, la víctima fue invitada por un compañero de escuela, menor de edad y con el cual había tenido una relación previa, a la casa de un amigo la noche del 31 de enero, en la calle Ministro Viveiros de Castro.
En el ascensor, el adolescente le advirtió que habría más personas en el lugar y le sugirió que harían “algo diferente”.
La joven rechazó la propuesta. Ya en el departamento, fue llevada a una habitación y, mientras mantenía relaciones con el adolescente, otros cuatro jóvenes entraron al cuarto.
La adolescente declaró que, tras la insistencia del menor, aceptó que los amigos permanecieran en la habitación, pero pidió que no la tocaran. Sin embargo, según su testimonio, los jóvenes se desnudaron, la besaron y la manosearon y la violaron.
Además, según consta en la denuncia, recibió golpes, cachetadas, puñetazos y una patada en el abdomen. Intentó salir del cuarto, pero se lo impidieron.
Quiénes son los acusados y cuál es su situación
La policía identificó a cuatro mayores de edad como responsables del ataque:
- Bruno Felipe dos Santos Allegretti, de 18 años
- João Gabriel Xavier Bertho, de 19 años
- Mattheus Verissimo Zoel Martins, de 19 años
- Vitor Hugo Oliveira Simonin, de 18 años

El adolescente que invitó a la víctima también está bajo investigación, pero su causa fue derivada a un tribunal de menores y su identidad no fue revelada.
La Justicia emitió órdenes de detención preventiva y de allanamiento para los cuatro mayores, pero ninguno fue hallado en sus domicilios y todos son considerados prófugos.

Qué revelaron las cámaras y los mensajes previos
Las cámaras de seguridad del edificio registraron la llegada de los jóvenes al departamento y la entrada de la adolescente junto al menor. También quedó grabado el momento en que la víctima abandonó el lugar.
En el expediente se incorporaron mensajes de WhatsApp entre la joven y el menor, en los que él la había invitado al departamento y le había preguntado si podía llevar a una amiga. Ella respondió que iría sola. Las conversaciones muestran cómo planificó la emboscada.
El informe forense y las pruebas de violencia
El examen confirmó lesiones compatibles con violencia física: se detectaron hematomas y escoriaciones en la zona genital, sangre en las zonas íntimas y marcas en la espalda y los glúteos. Se recolectaron muestras para análisis genéticos y de ADN.
El relato desgarrador de la madre: “Ella se sentía muy culpable”
La madre de la adolescente describió el dramático momento en que encontró a su hija tras el ataque: “Cuando la vi, lo primero que le pregunté fue si le habían dejado alguna marca. Ella levantó su vestido y, al ver las lesiones, me desesperé. Solo agarré los documentos y le dije: ‘Vamos a la comisaría’”. La llegada y salida de los jóvenes quedó grabada. La mujer también reveló el impacto emocional que sufrió la joven: “Apenas ocurrió, ella se sentía muy culpable y decía que quería morirse, por vergüenza, porque pensaba que todos la iban a señalar como abusada y como culpable. Ahora está empezando a entender que no tiene culpa, que no está sola y que ella importa. Que su ‘no’ es muy valioso y cuenta”.
Qué dijeron los acusados
El abogado de João Gabriel Xavier Bertho negó “con vehemencia” la acusación de violación. Sostuvo que ya hubo dos rechazos judiciales a pedidos de prisión preventiva y que existen mensajes donde la joven habría aceptado la presencia de otros jóvenes en el departamento.
Además, cuestionó que Bertho no haya sido escuchado por la policía y que imágenes de la joven despidiéndose “con una sonrisa y un abrazo” no hayan sido consideradas en la investigación.
