Putin raises the stakes on ‘ghost fleet’ security, as NATO launches war games in the Baltic Sea

NATO navies are putting on a display of maritime might in the Baltic Sea this month, as thousands of personnel from 17 countries aboard 50 vessels take part in war games led by the U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet.
Of the nine countries that share a Baltic Sea coastline, only Russia is not a NATO member, and June’s BALTOPS exercise aims to ensure those other countries can work together to defend the area, at a time when Moscow is turning up the heat.
«This year’s BALTOPS is more than just an exercise,» said U.S. Vice Admiral J.T. Anderson in a press release this week. «It’s a visible demonstration of our Alliance’s resolve, adaptability and maritime strength.»
Over the last year there’s been growing disquiet about Russia’s malign influence in the Baltic Sea region, with several incidents of severed undersea cables. Suspicion has fallen on Russia’s fleet of so-called «ghost» or «shadow» ships: hundreds of aging vessels, mostly oil tankers flying under foreign flags that are used to circumvent Western sanctions or trade in military hardware.

There are also well-founded concerns that some of these ships are used for covert intelligence gathering, communication intercepts or to sabotage undersea infrastructure like internet cables or gas and electricity pipelines. Three crew members from a Cook Islands-registered vessel, believed to be part of Russia’s ghost fleet, are currently facing charges in Finland over damage to an undersea cable that prosecutors say happened when the ship dragged its anchor for 60 miles along the floor of the Baltic Sea.
«There’s a growing importance of the shadow fleet to Russia’s wartime economy, and a growing awareness that NATO needs to stop it,» Tony Lawrence, a naval expert and researcher at the International Centre for Defence and Security in Estonia, told Fox News Digital.
But after a number of NATO navies adopted a tougher stance against the ghost ships through stop-and-search tactics, the Russians announced they would use their own navy to escort the fleet through the Baltic Sea.
«The Russian military presence in the region has always been visible, this is not a new feature. However, what is new is that Russia is protecting its shadow fleet tankers in the narrow pass of the Gulf of Finland,» Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen said in a recent television interview with Finland’s YLE TV.

NATO governments are keeping a close eye on the latest Baltic Sea developments and preparing for any possible increase in tensions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen spoke at a meeting of NATO’s Nordic and Baltic members this week, and described the Russian threat as real and serious. «We see a more aggressive Russian approach in the Baltic Sea region,» she told reporters.
The Baltic Sea has relatively narrow waterways, where international maritime boundaries extend 12 miles from the coast, and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) incorporate valuable fishing grounds or offshore wind farms. Add to this some of the busiest ferry routes in the world, commercial shipping traffic, military warships and civilian craft, and it raises the possibility that a more robust Russian naval posture in the area could increase the possibility of conflict.
«This is the risk of having more warships floating around the Baltic Sea, there is a potential for miscalculations that could escalate, and risk-reduction mechanisms that used to exist don’t work any more because the [NATO and Russian] navies aren’t talking to each other anymore,» Lawrence told Fox News Digital.

Does the Russian navy even have the capacity to escort every single ghost fleet ship in the Baltic? That seems unlikely, according to some.
«It’s an escalation, of course, of Russian misbehavior in the Baltic Sea. But in practical terms I’m not sure it’s going to make that much difference,» Lawrence said.
«Russia’s Baltic Sea fleet has always been the junior cousin of the Russian navy, and it’s never been particularly well-equipped or enlarged, but it’s still the biggest national navy operating in the Baltic, and they have ships that are attuned to the Baltic Sea, which is shallow, and its salinity is such that you need special kinds of sensors. And they know how to hide ships in the archipelagos of Sweden or Finland, so in that regard, they have a certain amount of specialist capability,» Lawrence explained.
The Baltic Sea war games this month – with the U.S. Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Paul Ignatius and the Blue Ridge-class command and control ship USS Mount Whitney taking part – serve to remind the Russians of the power of NATO’s combined naval assets in the region.

And some of the smaller navies will be reassured by the presence of the American warships.
A few weeks ago, Estonia’s navy brought one suspected shadow fleet ship into its territorial waters for an inspection, and it complied. But when the Estonians tried the same tactic for a second time, the ship refused to stop and wouldn’t come into port.

«That makes things more difficult for other nations because the shadow fleet is learning that it can just ignore what NATO navies do and there’s little that NATO can do in that situation, especially if there are Russian ships escorting the shadow fleet,» said Lawrence.
«But I don’t think NATO nations are going to back down. They will still follow and challenge these shadow fleet ships, or even look at other legislation, like requiring proof of insurance, to stop them from transiting the Baltic Sea.»

También es hermana de Josnars Baduel, un detenido por razones políticas, que clama ser liberado por ser inocente y para ser operado por las lesiones que le dejaron las torturas que le propinaron los carceleros del régimen chavista. Josnars fue detenido en 2020, acusado de participar en la Operación Gedeón y sentenciado a 30 años de cárcel.
Además Andreína es la cuarta hija del ex ministro de Defensa, Raúl Isaías Baduel, muerto en prisión en 2021 por haber denunciado la corrupción y el rumbo comunista totalitario que estaba dirigiendo su propio “compadre” y principal aliado, Hugo Chávez hace dos décadas.
En su entrevista con Clarín, asegura que no descansará hasta ver libre a su hermano y a todos los presos políticos.
-¿Tiene la esperanza de que la ley de amnistía pueda liberar a su hermano?
-Lamentablemente la ley de amnistía no promueve la justicia, ni la reparación, ni da garantías para que no se repita la represión. Además excluye a más de la mitad de los presos políticos y restringe el retorno de los exiliados. Nosotros celebramos que hayan aprobado los instrumentos legales como la amnistía, porque beneficia a unos cuantos, pero esto no significa que realmente haya voluntad política para iniciar la reconciliación, la convivencia y la democratización.
-¿Cuál es la situación de su hermano Josnars en la cárcel del Rodeo I? ¿Va a sumarse a la huelga de hambre de los presos políticos?
-No se va a incorporar a la huelga de hambre porque está muy enfermo y débil. Las torturas que le propinaron en el 2020 cuando lo detuvieron le causaron muchas lesiones, al punto que le deben realizar cuatro cirugías y no le dan permiso médico.
-¿Ha podido verlo en la cárcel?
-Lo pude ver en condiciones de horror. Me tocó la visita este sábado y lo encontré muy desgastado físicamente. Necesita hacerse cuatro operaciones quirúrgicas por las torturas recibidas. Me permitieron verlo sólo por 15 minutos a través de un vidrio. No pude darle ni un abrazo. Estamos en presencia de nuevas muertes bajo custodia del Estado -dice quebrándole la voz al referirse a la muerte de su padre en las mismas condiciones de su hermano-.
-¿De qué acusan a su hermano?
-Mi hermano Josnars es inocente. Lo vinculan arbitrariamente a la Operación Gedeón. Josnars fue imputado por los delitos de «traición a la patria», «terrorismo», «conspiración», «tráfico de armas» y «asociación para delinquir» y sentenciado a 30 años de cárcel en 2024.
-¿Cuál es la situación de los militares y de los que vincularon a la Operación Gedeón?
-Los 187 militares presos por razones políticas están excluidos de la amnistía. Pero insistimos en que deben ser liberados. Nosotros hemos denunciado que los 32 detenidos por la Operación Gedeón en el Fuerte Guaicaipuro deben presentar fe de vida y establecer la visita de los familiares debido que muchos presentan un estado crítico de salud.
-¿Pudo ver al gendarme argentino Nahuel Gallo?
-Supe que el gendarme argentino comparte celda con mi hermano. Nahuel Gallo sí se incorporó a la huelga de hambre.
Este lunes, en el centro de reclusión del Rodeo I, a una hora en coche de Caracas, liberaron a 30 detenidos políticos, entre ellos 11 cadetes que habían sido arrestados por jugar “the call of duty”.
La ley de amnistía no ha sido expedita y rápida. La salida de los detenidos continúa siendo a cuentagotas. Desde que fue promulgada la ley el jueves pasado han salido unos 95 presos políticos, mientras que el diputado chavista Jorge Arreaza, presidente de la comisión especial de seguimiento, afirma que han liberado a 170 personas, de los 379 que han prometido la semana pasada. Quedan excluidos unos 400 tras las rejas.
La comisión ha recibido más de 2.700 solicitudes para beneficiarse de la libertad plena. Hay en fila unos 11.000 venezolanos bajo régimen de presentación que deben seguir el proceso de contratar a un abogado para hacer los trámites pertinentes para eliminar las restricciones y obtener libertad plena.

Ataque con bolas de nieve a policías en Nueva York: el alcalde Mamdani quedó en el centro de la polémica
Un episodio insólito episodio dejó al alcalde de Nueva York, Zohran Mamdani, en la mira de la oposición. El lunes por la tarde, varios policías fueron atacados con bolas de nieve y hasta bloques de hielo en Washington Square Park. El hecho, que comenzó como una pelea organizada para aprovechar la histórica nevada, terminó en escándalo y desató una ola de indignación política.
Según informó la Policía de Nueva York (NYPD), los agentes llegaron al parque poco después de las 16 (hora local) para intervenir ante una multitud que generaba disturbios. Apenas llegaron, fueron recibidos con una lluvia de bolas de nieve, y algunos oficiales sufrieron impactos directos en la cara.

La situación se descontroló cuando un manifestante arrojó un bloque de hielo sobre la cabeza de un agente, lo que obligó a los policías a retirarse del lugar. La comisionada de la NYPD, Jessica Tisch, fue tajante en redes sociales: “El comportamiento que se observa es vergonzoso y es criminal. Nuestros detectives están investigando este asunto”.
El presidente del sindicato policial, la Police Benevolent Association, calificó el hecho como “inaceptable e indignante” y reclamó que los responsables “deben ser identificados, arrestados y acusados de agresión contra un oficial de policía”. Desde la Detectives’ Endowment Association, Scott Munro fue más allá: “No fue una diversión inofensiva; fue un ataque deliberado, indignante y peligroso contra policías uniformados”.
El alcalde Mamdani, en la mira: críticas y acusaciones cruzadas
Horas después del incidente, Zohran Mamdani pidió “respeto” para los oficiales a través de X. “He visto los videos de chicos que les lanzan bolas de nieve a los oficiales en Washington Square Park. Los oficiales, al igual que el resto de los trabajadores de la ciudad, han permanecido en las calles durante una tormenta histórica para garantizar la seguridad de los neoyorquinos y del tráfico. Trátenlos con respeto. Si alguien tiene que recibir una bola de nieve, que sea yo”, escribió.

Ante esta situación, el exgobernador Andrew Cuomo y el exalcalde Eric Adams salieron al cruce y responsabilizaron a Mamdani por “marcar el tono” con su retórica crítica hacia la Policía. “Esto es vergonzoso”, escribió Cuomo, recordando que el alcalde “llamó a la Policía ‘racista, malvada, perversa y corrupta’”. Y advirtió: “Las palabras tienen consecuencias. Estamos viendo eso en el creciente irrespeto hacia las fuerzas del orden”.
Adams, por su parte, sostuvo que ver “a oficiales siendo bombardeados con bolas de nieve mientras están bajo un clima brutal protegiendo a la ciudad debería enfurecer a todos los neoyorquinos”. Y apuntó: “Los políticos que constantemente atacan a la policía y se niegan a respaldarla están dando un ejemplo terrible. El liderazgo importa. El tono importa”.

La congresista Nicole Malliotakis también exigió condenas y pidió que los responsables “rindan cuentas”.
El incidente reavivó el debate sobre el respeto a la autoridad y el rol de la policía en Nueva York, en un contexto de fuertes tensiones políticas. Los sindicatos policiales y la oposición reclaman medidas ejemplares y acusan al alcalde de fomentar un clima adverso para las fuerzas de seguridad.
Mientras tanto, la NYPD continúa investigando y no descarta arrestos en las próximas horas. El episodio dejó en evidencia la fragilidad del clima social en la ciudad y puso en jaque el liderazgo de Mamdani, que enfrenta una presión creciente para tomar decisiones firmes.

DHS touts ‘most secure border’ in US history amid departure of nearly 3M illegal immigrants

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday touted «historic progress» under President Donald Trump and Secretary Kristi Noem, highlighting nearly 3 million illegal immigrants who have left the United States and what officials call «the most secure border in American history.»
The statement, released as Trump delivered his first State of the Union address since returning to office, credited the administration’s policies with producing record-low border crossings, expanded immigration enforcement and billions in taxpayer savings, while criticizing congressional Democrats for shutting down DHS funding.
«Over the last 13 months, nearly 3 million illegal aliens have left the U.S. because of the Trump Administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, including an estimated 2.2 million self-deportations and more than 713,000 deportations,» Noem said in a statement.
Noem added that total border apprehensions under the Trump administration «were lower than a single month» under the Biden administration, and DHS has saved taxpayers more than $13.2 billion.

«Countless lives have been saved, communities have been strengthened, and the American people have been put first again,» Noem stated.
DHS said Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested and removed more than 1,500 known or suspected terrorists over the past year.
Nationwide immigration operations also led to nearly 8,000 gang-related arrests, including members associated with Tren de Aragua and MS-13, the department said. DHS added that it launched a new web page, «Worst of the Worst,» tracking criminal illegal immigrants arrested during federal enforcement operations under the administration.

The department also reported an increase in drug seizures by Customs and Border Protection compared to the prior 12-month period, including 617,648 pounds of illicit drugs nationwide over the past year — an 8% increase over the previous year.
The Coast Guard separately seized roughly 550,000 pounds of illegal narcotics worth more than $3.9 billion through counter-drug operations and prevented more than 206 million lethal doses from reaching U.S. communities, DHS said.
DHS said it and the Department of Health and Human Services have located 145,000 unaccompanied children lost under the Biden administration.
«Too many of these children were exploited and abused before, during, and after being trafficked over our borders,» DHS said.

The department echoed comments made by Trump during his address, blaming Democrats for the partial government shutdown after Senate Democrats again blocked Republicans’ attempt to fund the department before the prime-time speech.
«Despite our historic successes, Democrat Politicians on Capitol Hill have shut down DHS, depriving many of our brave men and women who protect our national security of their paychecks—putting the livelihood of them and their families in jeopardy,» DHS said.
During his remarks, Trump criticized Democrats for failing to reach a funding deal.

«As we speak, Democrats in this chamber have cut off all funding for the Department of Homeland Security. It’s all cut off, all cut off. They have instituted another Democrat shutdown, the first one costing us two points on GDP, two points we lost on GDP, which probably made them quite happy actually,» Trump said during his speech. «They have closed the agency responsible for protecting Americans from terrorists and murderers.»
Trump said he was «demanding» a full and immediate restoration of funding for the department and efforts to protect the border.
