So when Johnson decided to boast about the House making good on the first bill to codify DOGE cuts and slash $9.4 billion from USAID and public broadcasting, he stepped just outside the House chamber and into a throng of reporters gathered by the Will Rogers Statue.
«Republicans will continue to deliver real accountability and restore fiscal discipline,» said Johnson.

But the Will Rogers Statue area is a major thoroughfare in the Capitol. At the moment Johnson spoke Thursday, dozens of House Democrats were headed toward the office of Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. They were demanding answers about why federal agents tossed Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., to the ground and handcuffed him during a press conference in Los Angeles with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
When Johnson finished talking about reeling in the money for public broadcasting and USAID, reporters only wanted to ask about Padilla.

«Did the federal agents go too far,» I asked. «Was that a bridge too far?»
A long line of angry House Democrats squeezed past Johnson in the Will Rogers corridor. But because Johnson chose to speak in such a heavily-trafficked locale, Democrats hectored Johnson as they marched to the Senate.
«Yes it was!» shouted an unidentified Democrat as she strode past the scrum, answering my question for Johnson.

But Johnson immediately pivoted to what Padilla did, standing up at Noem’s press conference to holler questions at her from the back of the room.
«It was wildly inappropriate,» said Johnson of Padilla as he spoke to the Capitol press corps. «You don’t charge a sitting cabinet secretary…»
«That’s a lie!» shouted another unidentified Democrat.
«A lie!» yelled someone else.

«He was acting like a senator,» charged Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y. «Why don’t you stand up for Congress!»
«Can you respond to these people heckling you Mr. Speaker?» I asked.
«I’m not going to respond to that,» replied Johnson.
The Capitol was pulsing at this point. The crush of House Democrats barged into the office of Thune, who was at the White House.
Lucky him.

The Democrats then trooped back across the Rotunda and poured into Johnson’s office.
«When the Speaker of the House refers to a sitting Member of the U.S. Senate who simply tried to exercise his First Amendment rights as acting like a thug, we’re very concerned about that,» said Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y. «Both the Speaker and Leader Thune should step up to the moment and preserve the institution of Congress, which are a balance in democracy and important balance in democracy.»
One lawmaker who didn’t join the angry Democratic mob was Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa. Dean stood apprehensively just beyond the wall of reporters and outside the invisible bubble created by Johnson’s security detail. When Johnson concluded speaking, Dean tried to pierce the security ring to have a civil conversation with the Speaker.

«Mike! Mike!» said Dean, trying to capture Johnson’s attention. «It’s Madeline.»
Johnson finally realized that «Madeleine» wasn’t some reporter trying to squeeze in an extra question for the Speaker. But someone he obviously knew. A fellow lawmaker. Someone from across the aisle with whom he must have a friendship and working relationship.
Johnson and Dean spoke in hushed tones as they walked quietly across Statuary Hall. Some in the press corps followed, trying to divine what they were saying. This wasn’t an offstage chat back in the Speaker’s Suite or on a private telephone call. But it went down in a very public part of the U.S. Capitol.

The conversation continued as the duo stopped adjacent to the «British Steps» near the Speaker’s Office. Dean clenched both of her hands into fists as she and the Speaker were about to part ways. She lightly touched Johnson on the right arm as he ducked into the Speaker’s Office.
«Thank you, sir,» said Dean.
«What were you speaking to the Speaker about?» I asked the Congresswoman.
«I just want to keep that to myself,» answered Dean. «But the one thing I wanted to say is that it’s up to the President to turn the temperature down. Everyone is inflamed. And agitated. But it starts with the President. He said ‘I’m talking to the President,’» said Dean.

But other Republicans may have tried to dial up the temperature by blasting Padilla.
Padilla left Washington earlier in the week to be in LA during the riots. The senator was supposed to start at first base for the Democrats in the Congressional Baseball Game on Wednesday night.
Republicans charged that Padilla should have stayed moored in Washington.
«He has a responsibility to show up at work not to go make a spectacle,» said Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo.

«The fact that he’s in California and not in D.C. while the Senate is voting means he’s not as concerned about doing his job here,» said Senate Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La.
Scalise conceded he had gone home to Louisiana when hurricanes threatened the state. He argued that he «wouldn’t go back home to try to stir angst against the federal agents that were coming and help us get back on our feet.»
Outraged Democrats thundered on the Senate floor, railing against the plight of Padilla.

«This is the stuff of dictatorships. It is actually happening,» said Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii.
«It’s despicable. It’s disgusting. It is so un-American,» said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
«I think it’s unprecedented,» said Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz. «It’s obnoxious, and it’s rather escalatory.»
But the outrage wasn’t limited to Democrats.

«I’ve seen that one clip. It’s horrible. It is shocking at every level. And it’s not the America I know,» said Sen. Lisa Murkowski,» R-Alaska.
The band of Democrats who ran over to Thune’s office never did find him. But by nightfall, Thune said he spoke to Padilla, Senate Sergeant at Arms Jennifer Hemingway and tried to contact Noem.
«We want to get the full scope of what happened,» said Thune.
This falls against the backdrop of the feds charging Rep. LaMonica McIver, D-N.J., for assaulting federal agents at a Newark detention facility earlier this spring. These episodes have shaken Congress.
Lawmakers wonder what would happen if the shoe were on the other foot. And despite the partisan chasms, they’re all lawmakers. They know that if something like this can happen to Padilla, well, they could be next.

Confidence and trust are waning.
«I remain hopeful that Leader Thune and other Republicans can walk us back from the brink,» said Schatz. «But I am not so sure anymore.»

El presidente de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, indultó al fundador de la plataforma de criptomonedas Binance, Changpeng Zhao, condenado por blanqueo de dinero, según informó este jueves en exclusiva The Wall Street Journal.
Este indulto llega después de esfuerzos por parte de Zhao para impulsar la empresa de criptomonedas de Trump.
Zhao fue condenado en mayo del pasado año a cuatro meses de cárcel tras un acuerdo con las autoridades para resolver acusaciones de blanqueo de dinero en la empresa. Salió de prisión el pasado mes de septiembre.
El exdirigente se declaró culpable de incumplir las normativas de EE.UU. contra el blanqueo de dinero, renunció al cargo de consejero delegado y asumió una multa de 50 millones de dólares como parte de un acuerdo con el Departamento de Justicia.
Binance ha pasado el último año buscando un indulto para el que fuera su fundador.
Según WSJ, el mandatario firmó el indulto el miércoles porque entiende que ha sido víctima de una persecución política, algo que alega con frecuencia cuando se trata de personas cercanas o afines a él, como el caso de Jair Bolsonaro condenado en Brasil por intento de golpe de Estado.
Desde que Trump volvió a la Casa Blanca, Binance ha sido un importante apoyo para la empresa de criptomonedas World Liberty Financial, fundada por la familia del presidente.
World Liberty Financial (WLFI) es una empresa y un proyecto de finanzas descentralizadas y criptomonedas, fundado en 2024. Su principal característica es la conexión pública y directa con el presidente Donald Trump y su familia.
El proyecto está diseñado para crear un ecosistema financiero digital que combina conceptos tradicionales con la tecnología blockchain, es decir sus datos o transacciones no pasan por un servidor bancario sino por una red de miles de computadoras.
World Liberty Financial ha generado una significativa controversia debido a su fuerte vínculo con la política estadounidense. El proyecto se ha asociado con Trump (mencionado como emeritus) y sus hijos, Eric Trump y Donald Trump Jr., entre otros.
Analistas y reguladores han señalado posibles conflictos de interés éticos y políticos, dada la participación de un presidente y su círculo íntimo en un proyecto financiero de esta escala y ambición.
Desde que regresó al poder en enero, Trump ha firmado varios indultos polémicos, como el de los responsables del asalto del Capitolio en 2021 o el de George Santos, excongresista republicano encarcelado por fraude y robo de identidad.
El caso de George Santos es el más reciente. Santos fue un congresista de Nueva York que fue expulsado de la Cámara de Representantes en diciembre de 2023 por numerosas acusaciones de engaño y fraude.
Trump sorprendió la semana pasada al anunciar que había conmutado la sentencia de George Santos, quien fue liberado inmediatamente después de poco más de tres meses de encarcelamiento.
Santos llegó al Congreso en 2022 de manera inesperada, ganando un escaño que lo convirtió rápidamente en una de las figuras más polémicas de Capitol Hill. Su carrera legislativa, sin embargo, fue breve y turbulenta. Todo comenzó a desmoronarse cuando medios de comunicación como The New York Times reportaron que gran parte de su currículum vitae era completamente inventado.
El presidente Trump también usó el indulto en sus últimos días en el cargo de su primera presidencia, a menudo en favor de aliados políticos o personas con fuertes conexiones.

Michael Flynn: Exasesor de seguridad nacional de Trump, que se declaró culpable de mentir al FBI. Trump le concedió un indulto completo.
Steve Bannon también es otro caso. El exestratega jefe de Trump, acusado de fraude relacionado con una campaña de recaudación de fondos para construir un muro fronterizo recibió el indultó en las últimas horas de la presidencia del republicano.

Días después del sorprendente robo en el Museo del Louvre en París, crece la especulación sobre dónde podrían terminar las lujosas joyas robadas que una vez adornaron a la realeza de Francia.
Un grupo de expertos advierte que las piezas valuados en más de 100 millones de dólares (88 millones de euros) podrían pronto ser fundidas o descompuestos en partes. Si se hace con éxito, algunos dicen que esas piezas más pequeñas podrían luego ponerse a la venta como parte de un nuevo collar, pendientes u otras joyas, sin llamar demasiado la atención.

“Ni siquiera tienes que ponerlas en el mercado negro, solo las pones en una joyería”, afirmó Erin Thompson, profesora de delitos artísticos en el John Jay College of Criminal Justice en Nueva York. “Podrían venderse a la vuelta de la esquina del Louvre”.
Thompson y otros dicen que esto se ha vuelto cada vez más común con joyas y bienes metálicos robados y señalaron que es una forma en que los ladrones pueden intentar cubrir sus huellas y ganar dinero.

Las joyas pueden ser difíciles de monetizar. “Al descomponerlas, ocultarán su robo”, señaló Marinello, y añadió que estos artículos podrían volverse aún más “imposibles de rastrear” si se sacan de Francia y pasan por cortadores y cadenas de suministro robustas en otros países.
Aun así, tales piezas a menudo se venden por una fracción del valor de lo que fue robado, debido a su tamaño más pequeño, pero también porque fundir o descomponer artículos de alto perfil elimina su valor histórico. No es un proceso sencillo. “El verdadero arte en un robo de arte no es el robo, es la venta”, sostuvo Robert Wittman, ex investigador principal del equipo de delitos artísticos del FBI.

A diferencia de otros, Wittman duda que los ladrones lograrán monetizar con éxito los artefactos que robaron del Louvre, que incluyen un collar y pendientes de esmeraldas, dos coronas, dos broches, un collar de zafiros y un solo pendiente usado por la realeza del siglo XIX. Video: vestidos como operarios, así escaparon los ladrones
Luego de días de misterio sobre el millonario robo que vivió el museo más importante de Francia, un nuevo video revela más detalles sobre aquel día. En las imágenes puede verse a dos individuos descender del edificio por un elevador montado en un camión con llamativa tranquilidad, tras haber realizado un asalto de película.
El video, que fue ampliamente compartido en redes sociales, parece haber sido filmado desde el interior del Louvre, con vista al río Sena, el domingo, según publicó The Telegraph.

Tras cometer el robo, dos hombres —uno con un chaleco de neón y otro con un casco de motocicleta— descienden lentamente en el compartimiento del elevador, mientras un tercer cómplice los aguarda al final del recorrido.
En ese momento, comienza a sonar la alarma de emergencia del museo, mostrando el instante exacto en que se detectó la violación del sistema de seguridad.
Difundido en redes sociales, el video muestra segundos más tarde cómo los asaltantes escapan en scooters. “Los individuos están en scooters, están a punto de irse”, se escucha exclamar a una persona, mientras de fondo suenan las sirenas policiales.
El Museo del Louvre permaneció cerrado durante tres días tras el incidente y reabrió sus puertas al público esta semana. Las piezas, pertenecientes a la colección de las joyas de la corona francesa y valuadas en 100 millones de dólares, continúan desaparecidas.
Por el momento, no hay consecuencias para la banda de asaltantes profesionales que logró escapar en tiempo récord.
Robo histórico: detalles del escape
Según detalló The Telegraph, la banda de cuatro asaltantes entró y salió en apenas siete minutos, utilizando el elevador montado en un camión.
Nuevos datos revelan que el grupo estacionó un vehículo robado frente al museo y empleó un elevador de obra para acceder a una ventana del segundo piso, que cortaron con una amoladora antes de ingresar a la Galería Apollon.

Una vez dentro, las cámaras registraron cómo cortaban una vitrina de vidrio mientras visitantes observaban la escena. Luego intentaron prender fuego al camión utilizado para el ingreso y, en la huida, dejaron caer una corona con esmeraldas y más de 1.300 diamantes, perteneciente a la emperatriz Eugenia.

Los ladrones escaparon por la misma ruta utilizada para ingresar. Descendieron por el elevador montado en el camión y posteriormente huyeron en scooter. Hasta el momento, no hay detenidos.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is standing firm behind Maine Democrat Graham Platner, a first-time Senate hopeful facing outrage over a Nazi-style tattoo and resurfaced Reddit posts.
Sanders, in an interview with Axios, blamed the media for the fury about the tattoo and Platner’s deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, where he said he went through a challenging chapter in his life.
«I’m not overly impressed by a squad of media running around saying, ‘what do you think about the tattoo on Graham Platner’s chest,’» Sanders told Axios on «The Axios Show.»

It was revealed that Platner, a U.S. Marine and Army veteran and oyster farmer, once had a skull-and-crossbones tattoo resembling the Totenkopf used by Hitler’s SS paramilitary forces. He has since covered the image with another tattoo.
Meanwhile, resurfaced Reddit posts show him appearing to mock military sexual assault victims, criticize police, and make racially charged comments about tipping. He also said on the social media platform in 2018 that «all» police are bastards and called himself a «communist.»
Platner’s campaign has been rocked by the controversies with his political director, former state representative Genevieve McDonald, resigning in the aftermath of the Reddit posts — the tattoo controversy came after. Platner has apologized for both incidents.
A new poll shows Platner with a decisive lead among a crowded Democrat field. The University of New Hampshire’s Pine Tree State poll shows 58% of likely Democrat primary voters back him. The poll was taken during which the Reddit posts were surfacing, and before the tattoo controversy came to light.

Despite the disarray, Sanders is doubling down on his support of Platner, who is contesting a crowded field. He told the outlet that Platner «went into a dark period in his life» regarding the online posts.
«I suspect that Graham Platner is not the only American to have gone through a dark period,» Sanders said. «What he did was he expressed his darkness on the internet. Probably not a brilliant thing to do, alright? And he said things that are stupid, things that were hurtful. He has apologized for them.»
Sanders said the public should focus on the issues facing ordinary Americans instead.

«I think what we have got to do as a nation is not focus on a tattoo,» Sanders said. «We’ve got to focus on a system which in many ways is collapsing.»
Platner said he got the tattoo in 2007 during a «night of drinking» while on leave in Croatia in the Marine Corps and claimed he did not know its historical associations at the time.

In a video posted to Instagram Wednesday afternoon, Platner elaborated that the design was chosen from a flash tattoo wall while «carousing» with fellow Marines in Split, Croatia.
«We thought it looked cool,» he said.
He claimed he had «lived a life dedicated to anti-fascism, anti-racism and anti-Nazism» and was «appalled» to learn it resembled a hate symbol.
Platner said he had the symbol inked over with a Celtic knot and imagery of dogs, a tribute to his family pets. He told the Associated Press he opted to cover it instead of removing it because there were no removal services near his home in rural Maine.
«This far more represents who I am now than even the skull and crossbones did,» he said on the video, lifting his shirt to reveal the new tattoo.

In the Reddit posts, Platner reportedly asked, «Why don’t black people tip?» in response to a thread asking, «What is one question you have always wanted to ask someone of another race?» according to WGME.
He also argued that if people «expect to fight fascism without a good semi-automatic rifle, they ought to do some reading of history.» And in another post, he said, «an armed working class is a requirement for economic justice.»

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is backing Maine Gov. Janet Mills for the Senate seat in the race to take on longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.
The University of New Hampshire’s Pine Tree State Poll shows Mills with 24% of likely voters and just 1% for any other candidate. About 14% remain undecided.
Meanwhile, Collins dominates the GOP field with 66% support, according to the poll.
