Decision day approaches for Trump admin on controversial UN force that failed to disarm Hezbollah

JERUSALEM—The scandal-plagued U.N. mission set up to stop Hezbollah rocket attacks on Israel will know in late August if the Trump administration plans to vote to discontinue its mandate at the U.N. Security Council.
In interviews with Fox News Digital, several leading American and Israeli experts on the mandate have called for the U.S. government to pull the plug on the mandate because the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) is an example of the U.N.’s ineffectiveness in stopping the Iran-backed Lebanese terrorist movement.
«Among countless failures by the United Nations in the Middle East, UNIFIL may be the most spectacular. Tasked with ensuring that Hezbollah would not rearm after the 2006 war, it patiently watched as Hezbollah became the largest non-state terrorist and military organization in the world. Stability in Lebanon — within reach only now that Israel has decapitated Hezbollah’s leadership — will not be achieved through UNIFIL,» the former U.S. Ambassador during the first Trump administration, David Friedman, told Fox News Digital.

After the conclusion of the Second Lebanon War in 2006 between Israel and Hezbollah, the UNSC passed Resolution 1701, which outlined that the international force UNIFIL, along with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), was supposed to block Hezbollah’s activity in southern Lebanon.
Hezbollah joined Hamas in its war on the Jewish state a day after the Iranian regime-backed terrorist organization in Gaza invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, and slaughtered over 1,200 people, including more than 40 Americans.
In October, Fox News Digital reported that UNIFIL soldiers had failed to stop Hezbollah’s massive rocket and military weapons expansion since the mandate was implemented in 2006.
Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon at the time accused UNIFIL of failing to enforce its mission to prevent the U.S.-designated terrorist movement Hezbollah from establishing military outposts on the border with Israel.
Israel’s incursion into southern Lebanon has revealed a military outpost about a mere 300 yards north of the border with the Jewish state that is filled with explosives and mines, according to Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

A U.S. State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital that «We have nothing to announce at this time» about a vote against continuing the UNIFIL mandate.
Dr. Zoe Levornik and Sarit Zehavi, from the Israel Alma Research and Education Center—one of the top think tanks assessing UNIFIL and Hezbollah—wrote on the organization’s webpage on June 10: «Over the years, UNIFIL has had numerous opportunities to improve and fulfill its role, particularly in light of Israel’s repeated warnings. Yet no real attempt has been made to alter the organization’s conduct. There is no reason to believe that renewing the mandate—even with improvements—will bring about the necessary change that would make UNIFIL’s presence in southern Lebanon relevant and effective in maintaining the security of both Israel and Lebanon.»

When confronted with the criticism from Alma about UNIFIL, the peacekeeping force’s spokesman, Andrea Teneti, told Fox News Digital «The LAF continues to benefit from UNIFIL’s support—not only to ensure full deployment in areas currently occupied by Israel, but also through training, capacity-building, and the development of essential capabilities needed to take over our mandated tasks on land and at sea.
«The mission’s relevance remains vital in maintaining an impartial international presence on the ground, helping to monitor the situation and reinforce the efforts of the LAF. Additionally, UNIFIL is providing essential support to local communities during this particularly challenging period, contributing to stability in the area despite the numerous shelling monitored and reported since 27 November 2024.»

He added «Implementation of 1701 is not with UNIFIL but with the parties. We are supporting the parties in the implementation of the mandate, but commitment is needed from both sides. In recent months, during this new political environment, LAF and UNIFIL have been recovering a large number of ammunition caches as well as positions used previously by Hezbollah. The situation is more stable than earlier, but air strikes are continuing and the stability is still fragile.»
Zehavi, who lives in northern Israel, where Hezbollah has caused severe destruction with missile fire, countered the UNIFIL spokesman’s comments. She told Fox News Digital that all the things mentioned by UNIFIL «are secondary to the primary issue of the mandate, which is the disarmament of Hezbollah.»
Zehavi added that despite the UNIFIL spokesman claiming that UNIFIL seized ammunition used by Hezbollah, she noted that UNIFIL has provided no evidence. She asked «in which towns» Hezbollah is being disarmed. She stressed, «Where are the pictures? How come there are no proofs and only statements that they are doing that? As a resident of the north, I want to see proofs to remind everybody that the IDF showed proofs of the arms of Hezbollah in south Lebanon and brought them into Israel.»
She also asked where has UNIFIL been over the last 18 years in training the Lebanese army?» I think the United States and France can do that better than UNIFIL,» mentioning the new mechanism set up to address violations via U.S. and French Generals who are in the region, she said.

Zehavi said UNIFIL over the years «tied our hands» during the Israel-Hezbollah war.
She added that Israel is enforcing the disarming of Hezbollah via continued military strikes in the south. The Biden administration and France brokered a fragile ceasefire in November between Hezbollah and Israel. The language of the ceasefire states it aims to «promote conditions for a permanent and comprehensive situation.» The ceasefire ended 14 months of high-intensity warfare between Israel and Hezbollah.
When asked about Zehavi’s questions, Teneti said «All our findings—whether related to activities conducted with or without the Lebanese Armed Forces—are shared with the members of the Security Council and also transmitted to the Mechanism, as agreed by both Lebanon and Israel. This is our authorized reporting line. Additionally, all detailed information is published quarterly in the Secretary-General’s report on the implementation of Resolution 1701, which is a public document.»
Pro-Hezbollah officials and soldiers within Lebanon’s Army also remain a core problem, according to experts and media reports. In late January, a LAF chief reportedly sent a classified document to Hezbollah. The LAF‘s Suhil Bahij Gharb, who oversees military intelligence for southern Lebanon, secured the confidential material from a military facility run by the U.S., France and the U.N. interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Gran Bretaña posee acuerdos de defensa con varios países del Golfo, que reclaman más ayuda, cuando Gran Bretaña se ha enfrentado a la administración Trump por el conflicto y por no permitirle el uso ofensivo de sus bases militares. Una posición que llevó a Trump a decir que el primer ministro británico, Sir Keir Starmer, “no es Winston Churchill”.
El embajador de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos en el Reino Unido afirmó que su país valoraba el apoyo británico, pero que un mayor apoyo «siempre era bienvenido».
Sus comentarios se producen después de que Emiratos Árabes Unidos se uniera a Chipre en sus críticas a la respuesta de Starmer a los ataques de represalia de Teherán.

Abulhoul afirmó que el objetivo de Emiratos Árabes Unidos era «contener» el conflicto, pero que su país «se reserva el derecho de proteger nuestros intereses».
«Las decisiones sobre seguridad nacional son políticas, no legales«. Lord Sedwill, un exasesor de seguridad nacional, declaró así ante el debate sobre el uso de bases británicas para ataques contra Irán.
«Son decisiones de ministros del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional, no decisiones legales de abogados. Y es completamente legítimo que el gobierno diga que el interés de seguridad nacional del Reino Unido significa que no vamos a involucrarnos directamente en esta campaña militar en Irán«, dijo lord Sedwill este viernes.
«Por supuesto, la acción militar debe ser legal, pero permitir o no el uso de nuestras bases es una decisión política. En 2018, actuamos junto con Estados Unidos y Francia contra el programa de armas químicas de Siria. James Talarico, a Democratic candidate for Senate in Texas, once posted information to social media, letting illegal aliens know they could evade detention as law enforcement grappled with a wave of immigration under President Donald Trump’s first term.
In a graphic put out by United We Dream, an activist group that supports abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Talarico encouraged viewers not to open their doors, not to sign any documentation without an attorney, to take pictures of ICE agents and to «fight back.»
«Undocumented Americans are folks who work in our businesses, learn in our schools and contribute to our communities — but lack citizenship documentation,» Talarico said in a post to X in 2019.
«As a Texas legislator, they’re also my constituents,» he added.

Talarico’s 2019 posts come as he wages a Senate campaign in the Lone Star State that’s attracted national attention. His comments clash with efforts to position himself as a pro-enforcement candidate.
In 2019, Talarico was in his second year of serving Texas as a state legislator.
At the time of his post, the United States reported an explosion of CBP Southwest Border Apprehensions, according to data published by the agency. In July alone, CBP reported 81,000 apprehensions — down from a peak of 144,000 in May — as immigrants feeling instability and crime in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador poured into the U.S.
For context, CBP reported just 40,000 apprehensions in July 2018, the year before.
In response to inquiries from Fox News Digital about the post, Talarico’s campaign said his message has focused on targeting individuals who threaten the public safety of the U.S.
«James has been clear that we should be spending precious law enforcement resources cracking down on the cartels, not our communities; deporting gang members, not small business owners; and hunting down human traffickers, not moms and babies,» Talarico spokesperson JT Ennis said in a statement.

At least one GOP onlooker said they believe Talarico is disguising a leniency he would take much further.
«James Talarico stands with dangerous criminal illegal aliens, not law enforcement,» Republican National Committee representative Zach Kraft said, reacting to Talarico’s 2019 post.
«He is an open borders lunatic who wants to abolish ICE, put a welcome mat on the southern border, and greet every illegal alien with a warm hug and taxpayer-funded healthcare.»
Talarico, who just beat out progressive candidate Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas., in a heated Senate primary, now looks to win over voters in November’s general election.
If elected, he would become Texas’ first Democratic senator since Sen. Bob Krueger in 1993.
It’s still unclear who Talarico will be facing in the general election due to a Republican runoff between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas.

When asked about immigration enforcement in the past, Talarico likened his views on enforcement to the entry of a home.
«Our border should be like a front porch — it should have a welcome mat out front and a lock on the door,» Talarico wrote on his website.
Among other immigration policies, Talarico supports increasing ICE resources for public safety and national security, banning the use of masks by ICE agents, creating a pathway to legalization for certain undocumented immigrants, hiring more immigration judges and modernizing security at ports of entry.
Talarico’s campaign believes his views separate him from his Republican competition.

«While James fights for immigration policies a majority of Texans support, Cornyn, Paxton, and the billionaires who prop them up are trying to smear James because this people-powered movement is a threat to their wealth and power,» Talarico’s campaign said.
Talarico will face down his Republican opponent on Nov. 3, 2025.

Los cuatro jóvenes están imputados por abuso sexual agravado (por tratarse de una menor de edad) y privación ilegal de la libertad. Además, hay otro menor involucrado, aunque hasta el momento no hay orden de detención para él.
El caso que conmocionó a Río: cómo fue la denuncia
Según la investigación de la Comisaría 12 de Copacabana, la víctima fue invitada por un exnovio adolescente a un departamento en la calle Ministro Viveiros de Castro, la noche del 31 de enero. Aunque el joven le pidió que llevara a una amiga, la adolescente fue sola.
En el ascensor, el adolescente le advirtió que habría más amigos y le sugirió “hacer algo diferente”, lo que ella rechazó. Ya en el departamento, la llevaron a una habitación y, mientras mantenía relaciones sexuales con su ex, otros cuatro jóvenes entraron.

La víctima contó que, ante la insistencia, solo aceptó que los amigos se quedaran en la habitación si no la tocaban. Sin embargo, según su testimonio, los chicos se desnudaron, la besaron y manosearon, la obligaron a practicarles sexo oral y abusaron de ella. También denunció que la golpearon y le impidieron salir de la habitación.

El informe forense confirmó lesiones compatibles con violencia física y sexual, incluyendo hematomas, abrasiones y sangre en la zona genital. Se recolectaron muestras para análisis de ADN.
Cámaras, mensajes y pruebas clave en la causa
Las cámaras de seguridad del edificio registraron la llegada de los jóvenes y la entrada de la adolescente junto al menor. También quedó grabado el momento en que la víctima sale del edificio. Según la policía, después de acompañarla hasta la salida, el adolescente regresó al departamento e hizo gestos que los investigadores interpretaron como de celebración.
La causa incluye conversaciones de WhatsApp previas al hecho, donde el adolescente invita a la víctima y le pregunta si puede llevar a una amiga. Los mensajes confirman la fecha y hora del encuentro.
Más denuncias y un menor bajo investigación
En los últimos días, dos adolescentes más denunciaron haber sido abusadas por miembros del mismo grupo.
Una de ellas contó que fue violada cuando tenía 14 años y que los agresores grabaron y difundieron imágenes del ataque. Otra joven declaró que fue abusada por Vitor Hugo Simonin.
El menor involucrado, que habría invitado a la víctima y participado en los hechos, está siendo investigado por un acto análogo al delito, pero el Ministerio Público de Río de Janeiro no solicitó su detención preventiva.

Vitor Hugo Simonin es hijo de José Carlos Costa Simonin, exsubsecretario de Estado de Gobernanza, quien fue destituido de su cargo este miércoles tras la detención de su hijo.
Además, Vitor Hugo es estudiante del Colégio Pedro II, uno de los más tradicionales de la ciudad.
El abogado de Vitor Hugo, Angelo Máximo, aseguró que su cliente niega cualquier implicación en el crimen: “No tiene nada que temer y demostrará su inocencia. Se presentó con la frente en alto”. Máximo adelantó que Vitor permanecerá en silencio ante la justicia.

Mattheus Verissimo Zoel Martins es el segundo de los señalados por el caso que estremece a Copacabana desde hace algunas horas. Se trata de un exalumno del colegio Intellectus (sede Botafogo) que terminó sus estudios hace dos años. Según la Liga Niteroiense de Deportes, es jugador del S.C. Humaitá en la categoría sub-20.
João Gabriel Xavier Bertho es el tercer acusado. El joven de 19 años es futbolista y jugaba en el Serrano FC hasta la denuncia por abuso sexual.
El club anunció su suspensión inmediata y la rescisión de su contrato tras la orden de detención. João Gabriel se entregó y fue detenido el martes.
Bruno Felipe dos Santos Allegretti es el cuarto señalado por la víctima como uno de los agresores. También está prófugo desde hace varias horas.
El joven de 18 años es estudiante de Ciencias Ambientales en la Universidad Federal de Río de Janeiro (Unirio), que lo suspendió por 120 días.
Qué sigue en la investigación
El jefe policial Angelo Lages informó que citarán a la víctima de un segundo caso de violación en grupo y llamó a otras posibles víctimas a presentarse.
El caso sigue bajo secreto de sumario y la conmoción social crece en Río de Janeiro, donde familiares y vecinos exigen justicia y castigo para los responsables.
