Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner blasted Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for spending billons of dollars renovating the Fed’s headquarters amid a housing crisis he said Powell is helping perpetuate.
The Federal Reserve’s headquarters has been undergoing a major renovation that has been plagued by cost overruns and now has a price tag of $2.5 billion. Meanwhile, the Trump administration faults Powell for not cutting interest rates, even with inflation seemingly under control.
«It’s rich that an unelected bureaucrat like Powell is wasting billions of taxpayer dollars on building renovations while Americans struggle to buy homes due to high mortgage rates, which are directly impacted by his refusal to lower interest rates,» Turner told Fox News Digital.
HUD became the first Cabinet agency to announce a move out of Washington, D.C., with Turner reporting in June that the department was moving to the already existing National Science Foundation (NSF) in nearby Alexandria, Virginia. Turner said the move will free up millions in taxpayer funds that were spent on the massive, longtime HUD headquarters at D.C.’s L’Enfant Plaza that also included «health hazards, leaks, and structural and maintenance failures» for staffers.
«HUD’s move isn’t about me – our workforce deserves to be in a building that is safe and that fits our workforce. NSF was never able to fully fill their building to occupancy and will move into a building that best fits their workforce. Instead of spending nearly a half-billion dollars on renovating 10 floors of basement with perpetual leaks, HUD and GSA are saving the taxpayers money – something that Chairman Powell, sitting in his ivory tower, thinks he is above – and putting Americans first,» Turner continued.

Speculation has swirled that President Donald Trump could try to oust the Fed chief ahead of his term officially ending in May 2026 due to his reluctance to lower the federal funds target rate, which would lower borrowing costs for Americans. The Fed in June held its benchmark interest rate range between 4.25%-4.5%, which Trump has argued stifles American economic growth.
The Fed, which sets monetary policies and oversees banks, has said decisions on interest rates are rooted in its data-dependent approach to managing inflation and economic growth. It acts independently, meaning it does not require approval from the president or Congress when enacting policies.
Trump has amplified his criticisms of Powell in recent weeks, arguing that he already should have lowered interest rates, while calling him a «numbskull» along with the nickname «Mr. Too Late.» At the recent NATO summit in Canada, Trump said during a press conference that Powell is «terrible» and is a «very average mentally person» who has a «low IQ for what he does.»

Trump said recent, over-budget renovations at the Fed headquarters, the Marriner S. Eccles Building, «sort of is» a «fireable offense.»
«I think he’s terrible. I think he’s a total stiff. But the one thing I didn’t see in him is a guy that needed a palace to live in,» Trump told reporters last week.
«You talk to the guy. It’s like talking to – nothing. It’s like talking to a chair. No personality, no high intelligence, no nothing. But the one thing I would have never guessed is that he would be spending $2.5 billion to build a little extension.»

«If Trump were serious about lowering interest rates, he would rein in his chaotic tariffs,» Warren said earlier this month during a speech at the Exchequer Club in D.C. «Instead, he is threatening to fire the chairman of the Federal Reserve. When his initial attempts to bully Powell failed, Trump and Republicans in Congress suddenly decided to look into how much the Fed is spending on building renovations.»

HUD is expected to save $22 million per year on operating and maintenance costs by moving out of the Robert C. Weaver Building, while the government is expected to pull in a hefty sum when the building is officially sold due to its prime location in the nation’s capital.
The agency’s new home at NSF is anticipated to cost the government $35 per square foot, compared to the $86 per square foot at the Weaver building, including operations and maintenance, Fox Digital learned.
The federal government had spent $90 million on repairs for the massive Weaver building in the last 15 years, Fox Digital learned, but the building has «deteriorated well beyond the point of cost-effective repair, creating significant financial obligations for the federal government if occupancy is maintained,» HUD reported in June.

The Federal Reserve on Sunday morning declined comment when asked about Turner’s remarks to Fox Digital.
The Fed’s website includes a frequently asked questions page regarding the building’s renovations, including underscoring that the Fed’s board «takes the responsibility to be a good steward of public resources,» and is subject to a handful of safeguards to ensure transparency.

During two sequential days of hearings, members of the House and Senate have the opportunity to question the Fed Chair on any topic, and then submit questions in writing after the hearings. As part of these hearings, the Federal Reserve publishes a semiannual Monetary Policy Report, detailing recent economic and monetary policy developments,» the page states.
Trump, who appointed Powell during his first presidential term, has meanwhile continued slamming Powell on social media for the current interest rates he said are «choking» the housing market for Americans.

«Too Late,» and the Fed, are choking out the housing market with their high rate, making it difficult for people, especially the young, to buy a house,» Trump wrote on Truth Social Friday. «He is truly one of my worst appointments. Sleepy Joe saw how bad he was and reappointed him anyway.»

Brasil advierte que una «intervención externa» en Venezuela puede «incendiar» América del Sur
Una intervención de Estados Unidos para deponer al presidente de Venezuela Nicolás Maduro «puede incendiar América del Sur» y Brasil no lo aceptará, advirtió el asesor especial del presidente Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Celso Amorim.
En una entrevista con AFP, Amorim, que fue canciller de Lula en sus primeros dos gobiernos (2003-2010), expresó preocupación por los ataques estadounidenses sin «ninguna prueba» contra embarcaciones de supuestos narcotraficantes en el Caribe, cerca de las costas venezolanas, lo que calificó como una «amenaza de intervención externa».
El asunto, según el veterano diplomático, puede estar en la agenda de una reunión todavía a confirmar entre Lula y el presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, el domingo en Malasia, al margen de la cumbre regional de la Asean.
Las relaciones entre Trump y Lula se tensaron luego de que el republicano impusiera aranceles punitivos del 50% al gigante sudamericano por el juicio al ex presidente Jair Bolsonaro, condenado a 27 años de cárcel por golpismo.
-¿Lula expresará su descontento ante Trump por los ataques estadounidenses a embarcaciones en el Caribe si se concreta su reunión el domingo?
-Dependerá del ambiente de la conversación. Brasil claramente está preocupado con el uso de la fuerza, la amenaza del uso de la fuerza o la amenaza de métodos clandestinos como la CIA para derribar gobiernos de la región. No queremos una convulsión en nuestra región. Dependiendo de lo que suceda, puede efectivamente tener consecuencias muy profundas y muy graves. No va a quedar contenida a los países donde ocurra. Hay una amenaza de intervención externa, hay personas muriendo ya. No sé si son narcotraficantes, pero no hay ninguna prueba de que lo sean. Es muy peligroso».
-¿Si EEUU interviene para deponer al mandatario venezolano Nicolás Maduro, cómo se posicionaría Brasil?
-Estamos en contra de una intervención externa. El problema de quién va a gobernar en Venezuela es de los venezolanos. No es fácil, exige mucha ayuda para crear puentes, pero una intervención externa, sea armada o con servicios de inteligencia, no es el camino. No podemos aceptar una intervención externa porque eso va a crear un resentimiento inmenso. Para Brasil y para Colombia (puede) crear problemas concretos de refugiados. Eso puede incendiar América del Sur y llevar a la radicalización de la política en todo el continente».
-¿Qué permitió el acercamiento de Brasil y Estados Unidos después de meses de tensiones por el juicio a Bolsonaro y los aranceles?
-«Diría que el sentido común, de ambas partes. El presidente Lula no va a dar lecciones a Trump y espero que lo contrario no ocurra tampoco. Tiene que haber un diálogo para buscar los puntos de encuentro. Se trata de continuar una conversación positiva y sobre todo un buen entendimiento en la parte económica y comercial».
-¿Cree que Trump desistió de apoyar al bolsonarismo en Brasil tras la condena al ex presidente ultraderechista?
-La palabra Bolsonaro no fue pronunciada en la conversación (telefónica de Lula y Trump el 6 de octubre). En todo gobierno hay personas más pragmáticas y personas más ideológicas. En este caso, creo que personas pragmáticas deben de haber hablado con Trump».
-¿Qué ofrecerá Brasil a EEUU para lograr la retirada de los aranceles?
-Creo que lo más importante es haber comenzado un diálogo sin precondiciones. Se acordó crear un grupo de trabajo que discutirá las cuestiones comerciales. Ahora, cómo será, qué será importante, es muy pronto para decirlo. Yo fui negociador durante mucho tiempo y no es cuestión de ir ofreciendo cosas.
-¿Los minerales críticos, entre ellos las tierras raras que Brasil posee, pueden estar sobre la mesa?
-Conversaremos sobre cualquier asunto. Sobre minerales críticos y tierras raras, lo importante es que seamos capaces de definir nuestras necesidades. Nosotros estamos abiertos a inversiones, siempre que también haya beneficio para Brasil.
-¿Brasil prioriza lograr la exención de aranceles a sectores importantes como la carne y el café?
-La carne y el café son importantes obviamente pero las máquinas y motores también. Todos los sectores serán negociados. Creo que va a ser una discusión práctica, vamos a ver qué conseguimos. No hubo condicionamiento político, jurídico o ideológico en relación a la negociación. Eso es lo más importante, ya es un nuevo comienzo.

The Trump administration’s Treasury Department on Friday sanctioned Colombian President Gustavo Francisco Petro, along with his wife, son and a close associate, accusing the group of being involved in the global illicit drug trade.
The action was taken under a Biden administration executive order targeting foreigners involved in the drug trade.
Petro joins a number of other world leaders under sanction by the Treasury, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and former president of Syria Bashar al-Assad.

«Since President Gustavo Petro came to power, cocaine production in Colombia has exploded to the highest rate in decades, flooding the United States and poisoning Americans,» Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wrote in a news release. «President Petro has allowed drug cartels to flourish and refused to stop this activity.»
Petro responded to the announcement on X, calling the sanction «a complete paradox.»
«Indeed, Bernie Moreno’s threat has come true; my children, my wife, and I have been added to the OFAC list,» Petro wrote in a post. «My lawyer in my defense will be Dany Kovalik from the USA. Fighting drug trafficking for decades and effectively has brought me this measure from the government of the society we helped so much to curb their cocaine consumption. A complete paradox, but not a step back and never on our knees.»
The Treasury accused Petro, his wife Veronica, eldest son Nicolás, and Minister of Interior Armando Benedetti of being involved in narcotics trafficking and narcoterrorism, which it said is continuing to fuel violence, corruption and instability in Colombia, while also «posing significant challenges to regional and international security.»
«Colombia remains the world’s top producer and exporter of cocaine,» officials wrote in a statement. «Cocaine from Colombia is often purchased by Mexican cartels, who then smuggle it into the United States via the southern border. It is a scheduled substance that is a significant drug threat to the United States, despite Gustavo Petro’s recent, flippant comparison of the use of the drug to whiskey.»
Petro, a former guerrilla member, was elected to the Colombian presidency in 2022.

The department accused him of providing narco-terrorist organizations with benefits under the auspices of his «total peace» plan, among other policies, which officials said have led to record highs in coca cultivation and cocaine production.
The Treasury also alleged Petro has allied himself with Maduro, who is also under U.S. sanction, and the Cartel de Los Soles.

«Gustavo Petro’s erratic behavior has also driven Colombia further apart from its partners in additional ways,» officials wrote. «In 2024, he shared confidential information obtained via secure anti-money laundering communication channels, threatening the integrity of the international financial system and leading to the suspension of Colombia’s Financial Intelligence Unit from The Egmont Group.»
Petro’s son and political heir, Nicolás, was charged in 2023 with money laundering and illicit enrichment over allegations that he funneled money received from drug traffickers into his father’s «total peace» efforts and election campaign.

He later admitted to receiving dirty money from a person formerly involved in narcotics trafficking and son of a contractor on trial for financing paramilitaries, according to officials.
President Donald Trump determined Columbia was a major drug transit or major illicit drug producing country on Sept. 15, finding it is «failing demonstrably» to uphold its drug control responsibilities.

Property and assets belonging to those sanctioned, that are in the U.S. or controlled by people in the U.S., are frozen and must be reported to OFAC. Entities owned 50% or more by those sanctioned are also frozen, and U.S. citizens are generally prohibited from related transactions.
Violations can result in civil or criminal penalties, with OFAC able to impose civil penalties on a strict liability basis.
Principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott added Secretary of State Marco Rubio will not certify Colombia under the criteria of the Department of State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2024, as carried forward by the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2025.
«The United States will not turn a blind eye to Petro’s appeasement and emboldening of narco-terrorists,» Pigott wrote in a statement. «We are committed to bringing terrorists and drug traffickers to justice and preventing deadly illegal drugs from entering our country. There must be no impunity for drug traffickers or acts of terrorism or violence by criminal armed groups.»

«We remain steadfast in our support for Colombian security forces, its justice sector, and departmental and municipal officials, and we will continue to partner with them in our joint efforts to combat drug trafficking,» he added. «Today’s decision is not a reflection on these institutions but rather the failures and incompetence of Gustavo Petro and his inner circle.»
Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, reacted to the announcement on X, saying «FAFO,» an acronym which stands for f— around and find out.

Estados Unidos envía al portaaviones más grande del mundo al Caribe y crece la tensión con Venezuela
El Pentágono anunció este viernes el despliegue de un portaaviones y su flotilla acompañante para “contrarrestar el narcoterrorismo” en América Latina.
Estados Unidos movilizó en agosto destructores, un submarino y barcos con fuerzas especiales en aguas internacionales del Caribe sur, cerca de las costas de Venezuela, con el supuesto propósito de combatir el tráfico de drogas.

Aunque ha habido regularmente presencia de portaaviones para ejercicios de entrenamiento con fuerzas de países vecinos, es la primera vez que Estados Unidos despliega una fuerza de esta magnitud en América Latina contra el narcotráfico.
El despliegue del grupo de ataque del portaaviones USS Gerald R. Ford se produce “en apoyo a la directiva del presidente de desmantelar las Organizaciones Criminales Transnacionales (TCOs) y contrarrestar el narcoterrorismo en defensa de la Patria”, dijo en X el portavoz del Pentágono, Sean Parnell.

En tanto, el comunicado del Pentágono no indica la fecha en que llegará el portaaviones a la región. El USS Ford, que tiene cinco destructores en su grupo de ataque, está desplegado actualmente en el mar Mediterráneo.
Una persona familiarizada con la operación dijo a la agencia AP que uno de esos destructores está en el mar Arábigo y otro en el mar Rojo. En el momento del anuncio, el portaaviones estaba en un puerto de Croacia, en el mar Adriático.
La persona, que declaró bajo condición de anonimato para hablar de operaciones militares sensibles, no quiso decir cuánto tiempo tomaría para que el grupo de ataque llegue a las aguas frente a Venezuela o si los cinco destructores harían el viaje.
Horas antes de este anuncio, el secretario de Guerra, Pete Hegseth, informó vía X el décimo ataque contra una presunta narcolancha, con un balance de seis muertos.

Al menos 43 personas han muerto en el Caribe y en el Pacífico desde que Estados Unidos inició su actual campaña sin precedentes de ataques letales mediante misiles en la región, el 2 de septiembre.
La embarcación destruida en la noche del jueves al viernes operaba para el cártel Tren de Aragua, aseguró el secretario en la red X. “Nuestros servicios de inteligencia sabían que la embarcación estaba involucrada en el contrabando de narcóticos”, agregó, y dijo que el ataque tuvo lugar en “aguas internacionales”.

Este fue el primer ataque nocturno en la zona, explicó Hegseth, que acompañó su mensaje con un video en blanco y negro en el que se ve una lancha que circula a velocidad normal, hasta que explota.
El jefe del Pentágono advirtió que Estados Unidos tratará a los “narcoterroristas” como ha tratado a la organización terrorista “Al Qaeda” de Osama bin Laden.
Petro acusó a EE.UU. de cometer “ejecuciones extrajudiciales”
Estados Unidos está cometiendo “ejecuciones extrajudiciales”, afirmó el jueves el presidente colombiano, Gustavo Petro, que mantiene un pulso particular con el inquilino de la Casa Blanca, Donald Trump.
El líder republicano avisó al inicio de su actual mandato que estaba dispuesto a utilizar todo el potencial militar estadounidense para acabar con las rutas del narcotráfico y con los cárteles.

Esto permitiría a Washington, según el gobierno, utilizar las mismas herramientas que usó durante dos décadas en todo el mundo tras los ataques del 11 de septiembre de 2001 de Al Qaeda.
Estados Unidos está en “conflicto armado” con los cárteles de la droga, explicó Trump en una carta enviada al Congreso. Además, asegura que el tráfico marítimo de droga prácticamente ha sido erradicado. Sin embargo, el ritmo de los ataques con misiles contra las embarcaciones se ha incrementado.

El jueves, Washington anunció junto a Trinidad y Tobago ejercicios militares conjuntos frente a las costas de Venezuela con el buque de guerra USS Gravely. El gobierno del país caribeño decidió brindar “categóricamente su claro apoyo a la intervención militar en curso”.
“Incendiar” América del Sur
Venezuela movilizó tropas y milicias ante la amenaza estadounidense.
Nicolás Maduro, acusado por el gobierno estadounidense y encausado oficialmente ante un tribunal en Nueva York por supuestamente encabezar el denominado cártel de los Soles, sostiene que la verdadera intención de Washington es promover un cambio de régimen en su país.
En este contexto, Celso Amorim -asesor especial del presidente brasileño, Lula da Silva- sentenció que una “intervención externa” en Venezuela “puede incendiar” América del Sur, durante una entrevista con la AFP.

“No podemos aceptar una intervención externa porque eso va a crear un resentimiento inmenso”, agregó Amorim.
Trump llegó a confirmar que la CIA podría llevar a cabo operaciones encubiertas dentro de Venezuela.
La oposición demócrata en el Congreso estadounidense también exigió explicaciones, ya que la Constitución establece que el Congreso debe autorizar expresamente una declaración de guerra.
Ante esta situación, Trump declaró que está dispuesto a enviar a Hegseth ante el Congreso para dar explicaciones antes de pasar a una nueva fase en tierra.
