Salen a la luz grabaciones caseras de Woody Guthrie que permanecieron ocultas durante décadas
En 1951, cuando su salud empeoraba, Woody Guthrie encendió su nueva grabadora T-100 de cinta abierta para registrar varias canciones destinadas a su editor. Su etapa como artista de grabación había terminado. Esto solo tenía un objetivo comercial.
La enfermedad de Huntington, que al año siguiente obligaría a Guthrie a permanecer en el hospital, disminuía su voz. A veces su habla resultaba tan poco clara que quienes desconocían su condición especulaban que bebía demasiado. Howie Richmond, editor musical, conocía la verdadera causa. Firmó con el legendario compositor de “This Land Is Your Land” y le envió la grabadora. Así comenzó una tarea en la que Guthrie, en su modesto apartamento de Brooklyn, rodeado de su esposa y sus hijos pequeños, grabó decenas de demos de canciones para establecer su autoría intelectual.
“Dios sabe que pienso que eres el mejor en tu campo”, dice Guthrie en un comentario a Richmond capturado en la cinta. “Si no pensara eso, nunca habría firmado mi nombre y el tuyo en la misma hoja de contratos”.
El jueves 14 de agosto, Shamus Records lanzará Woody at Home, Vol. 1 and 2. La colección incluye 20 canciones y dos piezas habladas, con la aprobación y participación de la Fundación Woody Guthrie, lo que no es poca cosa. Durante años, la familia conocía la existencia de estas cintas, pero Nora Guthrie, hija de Woody y durante mucho tiempo curadora de su obra, se resistió a publicarlas. Incluso hoy, afirma que probablemente no lo habría permitido de haber seguido al frente de la fundación.
Sin embargo, se retiró de ese cargo el año pasado y su hija asumió el rol. Anna Canoni, nacida en 1978, nunca conoció a su abuelo, fallecido a los 55 años en 1967. No obstante, confiaba en el productor Steve Rosenthal, especializado en grabaciones históricas con desafíos sonoros. Si bien Canoni mantiene un fuerte vínculo con la obra de su abuelo, no carga el trauma y la carga emocional de haber presenciado su deterioro físico como sí le ocurrió a su madre. (Nora tenía 17 años cuando falleció Guthrie). “Lo que más me gusta de esta grabación es la suavidad en la voz de Woody”, dice Canoni. “Hay una delicadeza. Y me siento en la habitación con él”.
Nora Guthrie, ahora con 75 años y testigo de aquellas escenas, asegura que apoya la publicación tras décadas de dudas. Los trabajos de limpieza de Rosenthal y la ingeniera de masterización Jessica Thompson lograron eliminar distracciones, como ruidos de la calle, voces de fondo y un zumbido que quedó en la grabación original.
“Las escuché por primera vez hace unos 20 o 25 años: los niños gritaban, los autos sonaban la bocina, yo lloraba”, cuenta Nora. “Yo tenía un año. Arlo tenía 3 años y medio y no dejaba de interrumpir. ‘Papi, papi, bla bla’. La idea de restaurar esas cintas y que tuvieran algún valor, sobre eso he cambiado de opinión”.
La nueva colección tiene relevancia histórica. Woody at Home comienza con una versión de “This Land Is Your Land” que incluye versos adicionales. También se puede escuchar “Plane Wreck at Los Gatos”, un blues hablado que el maestro Martin Hoffman musicalizó en 1958. Esa versión, conocida como “Deportee”, fue grabada por artistas como Dolly Parton y Bruce Springsteen. La original de Guthrie, un poema acompañado solo de guitarra, no se había publicado hasta ahora.
La familia promocionó “Deportee” como adelanto el pasado 14 de julio, referencia directa a las políticas de deportación masiva de la administración Trump. Canoni destaca que la versión hablada de su abuelo introduce preguntas sobre el accidente de 1948 en que murieron 28 trabajadores agrícolas migrantes mexicanos, un hecho que Guthrie retrató porque la prensa solo los nombraba como “deportados”.

Roger McGuinn, quien grabó la canción con The Byrds en 1969, contó que la escuchó por primera vez en la voz de Joan Baez. Sintió tristeza al escuchar por primera vez a Guthrie cantarla y notar su estado de salud, pero celebra que ahora pueda conocerse. “No es el Woody completo, no es el que todos pensábamos conocer”, comenta McGuinn. “Pero siempre es valioso escucharlo”.
Para la familia Guthrie, la publicación recuerda que, pese al declive físico, el cantante se mantuvo intelectualmente lúcido. Sus últimos años se retrataron en la reciente película biográfica de Bob Dylan, Un completo desconocido.
Entre las grabaciones hay canciones que sorprenderán a los admiradores de Guthrie. Además de sus baladas del Dust Bowl y canciones para niños, en los años 50 reflexionaba sobre las limitaciones de la ciencia (“One Little Thing an Atom Can’t Do”) y sobre eventos contemporáneos. “Es como un gran rompecabezas de mil piezas, y con cada publicación agregamos otra más”, dice Canoni. “Eso nos da una visión más precisa y completa de quién fue Woody y sobre qué temas escribía”.
No todos comparten su entusiasmo.
Jeff Place, experto en Guthrie y destacado archivista del Centro Smithsonian de Folklore, se sorprendió al enterarse del lanzamiento. Recordó que cuando producía Woody at 100 en 2012, pidió a Nora acceder a las cintas y no le permitió siquiera escucharlas. Tras oír Woody at Home comprendió la decisión original, asegura. “La mayoría del contenido suena mal, resulta algo embarazoso para Woody”, comenta Place, ganador de tres Grammy por su trabajo en recopilaciones históricas. “Ya la enfermedad de Huntington lo había afectado mucho y hablaba con dificultad. No es el mejor Woody Guthrie”.
El escritor y músico Elijah Wald, quien inspiró el filme Un completo desconocido, compara este lanzamiento con la publicación póstuma de obras de Ernest Hemingway. “Si estuviera escribiendo un libro sobre Guthrie, me alegra que exista este material”, comenta. “Como oyente, me queda claro que no pensaba publicarlo. No creo que mejore ni perjudique su legado”.
Otros ven el valor del lanzamiento.
Tim Hernandez, escritor que investigó a las víctimas de Los Gatos, sostiene que ese poema justifica el álbum. “El hecho de que este hombre, un hombre blanco del Este, se preocupara lo suficiente para escribir esta canción es importante”, agrega. “Es para todos los que nos consideramos ciudadanos estadounidenses”.
Tony Seeger, musicólogo sobrino de Pete Seeger, amigo cercano de Guthrie, reflexionó sobre la tragedia causada por la enfermedad, pero también sobre su fuerza para proteger sus derechos de autor y asegurar regalías para los suyos. También le impacto la lucidez de Guthrie pese al deterioro físico. “Este Woody es diferente a todo lo que había escuchado antes”, apunta Seeger. “No debería ser la única grabación de Guthrie que uno escuche, pero sin duda es muy interesante”.
Nora Guthrie elogió a su hija y a Rosenthal por el trabajo técnico que permitió la publicación. Su madre, Marjorie, apenas se escucha entre las grabaciones limpias, y lograron eliminar los gritos de los niños y otros ruidos. “Me acosté en el sofá y escuché todo con calma, sin nadie cerca”, cuenta. “Fue hermoso escuchar la voz de mi padre. Al oírlo, accedes al alma de Woody. No a todos les interesará, pero para quien lo escuche, esa humildad y delicadeza lo conmoverá.”

A group of six criminal illegal aliens have been arrested by ICE in Houston after having collectively illegally entered the country a staggering 42 times.
The six criminal aliens were finally arrested by ICE in the final days of July after two decades’ worth of illegal reentries and after racking up an equally astounding 48 criminal convictions, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
Criminal convictions among the group include cocaine trafficking, grand theft auto, assault, domestic violence and multiple DWIs. One of the illegals is a documented member of a cartel-connected gang.
According to ICE, one illegal, Oscar Moran Valle, a 43-year-old Mexican national and documented Paisas gang member, illegally entered the U.S. 12 times. He has been convicted of 11 criminal offenses, including three convictions for illegal entry, two for DWI, and one each for drug possession, larceny, giving a false ID to law enforcement, illegal reentry and driving without a license. He was arrested by ICE on July 29.

Another, Alex Salomon Reyes-Chavez, a 46-year-old from Honduras, illegally entered the U.S. five times. Reyes-Chavez has been convicted of seven criminal offenses, including two convictions for burglary and heroin possession, as well as convictions for grand theft auto and cocaine trafficking. He was arrested by ICE on July 30.
Another Honduran national, Angel Bonilla Barahona, 38, was arrested by ICE after illegally entering the U.S. seven times and being convicted of seven criminal offenses, including three convictions for assault as well as convictions for resisting arrest, criminal mischief and flight to avoid arrest.
Marvin Javier Marquez Celaya, a 38-year-old criminal alien from Honduras, arrested by ICE July 30. He illegally entered the U.S. five times and has been convicted of eight criminal offenses, including three convictions for burglary, two for cocaine possession, and one each for larceny, domestic violence and illegal reentry.
Thanh Van Nguyen, a 53-year-old from Vietnam, illegally entered the U.S. and has criminal convictions for burglary, larceny, assault and obstructing police and damaging private property.

The last of the six, Jose Angel Munoz Saucedo, a 40-year-old from Mexico, illegally entered the U.S. 12 times and has been convicted of eight criminal offenses, including four convictions for DWI, two for illegal entry, and one for fleeing from a police officer.
ICE said the six were arrested by multiagency targeting teams established under the Trump administration to target the «worst of the worst» criminal illegal aliens for removal.
Commenting on the arrests, Gabriel Martinez, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston acting field office director, thanked the administration for making immigration enforcement a priority so that such criminal illegals «will no longer be able to prey on innocent Americans.»

Brother of Israeli hostage urges UN to act after video shows Hamas starving and torturing captives

Ilay David, the brother of 22-year-old hostage Evyatar David, delivered an emotional plea to the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, calling for urgent international action after a horrific new video showed his emaciated brother being forced to dig his own grave inside a Hamas tunnel.
The Security Council session was requested by Israel and comes as the country stands on the verge of a full annexation of Gaza — a move prompted by the collapse of ceasefire talks and the release of disturbing images of starving hostages.
Evyatar David was abducted from the Nova music festival on Oct. 7, 2024. In the newly received footage, he appears frail — reduced to just 90 pounds — and is seen struggling to speak.

Holding up a still from the video, Ilay David described a haunting visual: «As my younger brother, a living skeleton, was forced to speak and dig his grave, the chubby and well-fed hand of a Hamas terrorist entered the frame. Suddenly, Hamas confirmed what we have known for months — the terrorists have plenty of food. The only ones starving in Hamas’ tunnels are the hostages: my brother, Guy, and the [49] others.»
«My mother and I could not bring ourselves to watch it,» he said, speaking remotely via Zoom, «But my father and sister did. And now the images haunt them.»
Citing testimony from former hostages — including Tal Shoham, whose account was first published by Fox News Digital — David said the terrorists remain in nearby rooms while deliberately starving captives as part of a «sick and twisted propaganda campaign.»
«This is a humanitarian crisis — the crisis of the hostages — that is not being discussed here,» he said. «Not in the Security Council, and not in other U.N. forums. The very soul of humanity is being scarred by Hamas’s barbaric actions.»

The meeting of the U.N. Security Council was convened following the release of the latest hostage video. Israel believes that as few as 20 hostages remain alive in Hamas captivity — many in critical condition, with only days left to live.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who attended the session in New York, emphasized ahead of the meeting that while Israel continues to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza, Hamas is deliberately starving the hostages.
«Evyatar was forced to dig his own grave. This is satanic,» he said. «These are evil crimes — like those committed by the Nazis and ISIS.»

Sa’ar also warned that recent moves by several nations to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state have emboldened Hamas and undermined negotiations.
«They gave Hamas free gifts and an incentive to continue this war,» he said. «They directly assassinated the hostage deal and ceasefire. These countries prolonged the war.»
Ilay David ended his address with a desperate appeal: «We, the family of Evyatar, refuse to give up hope. We are weeping, we are suffering, but we are also fighting with every fiber of our being. We will not give up until we see him back home — until my mother and father can hug him again.»
