Científicos entrenan algoritmos para descifrar las expresiones faciales de los animales
En 1872, Charles Darwin aseguró que los mamíferos comparten un lenguaje de emociones expresado a través de músculos faciales. Investigaciones posteriores confirmaron similitudes anatómicas entre humanos y otras especies, como perros, gatos y caballos. Y ahora, un grupo de investigadores del Reino Unido y de otros países comenzaron con el desarrollo de sistemas de inteligencia artificial capaces de identificar expresiones en animales y relacionarlas con estados de dolor, estrés o emociones básicas. Esta tecnología, aún en etapa experimental, busca mejorar el bienestar animal mediante diagnósticos más rápidos y precisos que los que logran los observadores humanos.
En campos del sureste de Inglaterra se prueba un sistema diseñado por científicos de la Universidad del Oeste de Inglaterra y del Colegio Rural de Escocia. La herramienta funciona con cámaras que registran el rostro de cada cerdo al acercarse al comedero. El programa reconoce al individuo, ajusta su ración de alimento y envía alertas al encargado de cuidar al animal, en caso de detectar signos de dolor o malestar.
Según sus creadores, este procedimiento permite un cuidado individual en ambientes de producción intensiva, donde el seguimiento manual de cada especie es difícil de sostener.
Según precisó Science, en las últimas décadas se desarrollaron escalas de muecas específicas para especies como caballos, ovejas o gatos, que asocian movimientos musculares con niveles de dolor o estrés. Aunque útiles, requieren observadores entrenados quienes dedican largos períodos a registrar cada gesto, un proceso lento y poco viable en situaciones prácticas.
La inteligencia artificial ofrece una alternativa más veloz y precisa: algoritmos entrenados con miles de imágenes aprenden a detectar variaciones faciales invisibles para el ojo humano. Conforme detalló la revista científica, en pruebas recientes, sistemas de este tipo lograron identificar dolor en ovejas con un nivel de acierto superior al de veterinarios especializados.
Asimismo, el sistema alcanza una tasa de reconocimiento del 97 por ciento en la identificación de cerdos individuales y además distingue signos de estrés en sus rostros.
El desarrollo de estas herramientas no se limita al Reino Unido. En Israel, la informática Anna Zamansky encabeza un equipo que aplica inteligencia artificial al estudio de perros y gatos. Primero creó un software de reconocimiento facial para ayudar a reunir animales perdidos con sus dueños. Más tarde, orientó su trabajo hacia el análisis de incomodidad o frustración en expresiones faciales de mascotas.
Su equipo también colabora con investigadores que documentan cientos de gestos en gatos y buscan entrenar algoritmos para diferenciar estados de felicidad, serenidad o enfado.
En Brasil, el veterinario Gabriel Lencioni entrenó un sistema con más de tres mil imágenes de caballos antes y después de cirugías. La inteligencia artificial diagnosticó dolor en un 88 por ciento de los casos, superando a especialistas humanos.
Asimismo, en Suecia, investigadores crearon una herramienta capaz de evaluar caballos mediante video, con la que identificaron tanto signos de dolor que habían pasado inadvertidos como falsos positivos en los que los expertos se habían equivocado.
A pesar de estos avances, persisten dudas sobre la fiabilidad de los algoritmos. Muchos investigadores señalan el problema de la “caja negra”: los sistemas ofrecen resultados sin explicar con claridad qué parámetros tomaron en cuenta. Un algoritmo puede centrarse en detalles irrelevantes, como un objeto del entorno, y producir diagnósticos erróneos.
Para reducir esa incertidumbre, algunos grupos emplean mapas de calor que muestran qué áreas del rostro analiza la máquina. En la mayoría de las especies los ojos son el rasgo más informativo, aunque en gatos destacan la nariz y la boca.
Otro límite es la dependencia de bases de datos extensas. Mientras el entrenamiento de modelos de lenguaje como ChatGPT contó con millones de documentos, las imágenes de animales en contextos claramente definidos son escasas. Los investigadores trabajan en la creación de repositorios con rostros de perros, gatos, caballos y primates en distintos estados emocionales. El objetivo es contar con un volumen de información suficiente para que la inteligencia artificial aprenda patrones confiables.
El interés creciente también se relaciona con el debate ético sobre el bienestar animal. Campos inteligentes podrían ofrecer a cada cerdo o vaca una dieta adaptada a su estado de salud y a sus emociones; clínicas veterinarias y refugios tendrían acceso a herramientas que evalúan dolor en tiempo real; en deportes ecuestres, sistemas de este tipo podrían determinar si un caballo compite en condiciones adecuadas.
Los investigadores insisten, sin embargo, en que la tecnología debe complementar y no reemplazar el criterio humano. El bienestar animal incluye factores que van más allá del rostro, como la postura, la temperatura corporal o la interacción social. La inteligencia artificial puede acelerar el diagnóstico y ampliar la cobertura, pero las decisiones finales deben quedar bajo supervisión de expertos.
Las perspectivas de futuro son ambiciosas. En la práctica inmediata, varias aplicaciones ya están listas para su lanzamiento. Una de ellas permitirá a dueños de gatos escanear el rostro de su mascota durante medio minuto y recibir un mensaje con un nivel estimado de dolor. Según precisó National Library of Medicine, investigadores en los Países Bajos desarrollaron una herramienta similar para caballos, mientras que en Canadá un sistema analiza emisiones de calor corporal de pollos para detectar malestar.
El desarrollo de estos sistemas refleja una tendencia más amplia: el uso de inteligencia artificial en áreas vinculadas con la salud y el bienestar. En este caso, la promesa no se dirige a los humanos sino a los animales.
Para los investigadores, el potencial de la tecnología es claro. Si una cámara puede detectar con precisión el dolor de una oveja, la frustración de un perro o el estrés de un cerdo, el camino hacia una relación más consciente con los animales está abierto. La inteligencia artificial no reemplazará la observación humana, pero puede convertirse en una herramienta decisiva para mejorar la vida de quienes dependen de ella.

«It’s not just my record Trump’s trying to erase,» Biden told South Carolina Democrats, while talking about the president’s efforts to get rid of the Affordable Care Act.
«He’s trying to erase fairness, equity, history, the truth,» he continued, citing incidents in which information about slavery has been removed or altered from museums and national parks since Trump took office.
«Great nations don’t bury the truth, Biden balked. «They face it. This is a great nation.»

Last summer, Trump wrote that «The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.»
He also ordered a review of the Smithsonian to make sure its exhibits align with celebrating «American exceptionalism.»

Biden also predicted that Democrats would take back both the Senate and House of Representatives in November.
Biden boasted that he knew more heads of state than any other president in history, adding, «Americans knew they had a president who believed in, respected and followed the Constitution.»
Citing a Pew Research Poll that he said showed a «dramatic drop in our reputation around the world,» he claimed, «We’re no longer the way we were.»
He added if the U.S. doesn’t lead the world, it could be Russia or China that does.

Biden also blasted Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday for what he left out.
«The guy talks for almost two hours but never mentioned the anniversary of Putin invading Ukraine,» Biden admonished. «Never once.»
He also noted that the president didn’t mention Renee Good or Alex Pretti, the Americans who were killed by ICE agents earlier this year in Minneapolis, «or offer even a word of solace to their families.»

«He doesn’t offer a word of support, even recognition to Epstein’s victims sitting in front of him during the entire time,» Biden said, mentioning the Jeffrey Epstein survivors who were in the audience for the speech. «He never acknowledged them.»
The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) accused Everett, Washington, Mayor Cassie Franklin of escalating tensions with federal authorities after she issued a directive limiting immigration enforcement in the city.
Franklin issued a mayoral directive this week establishing citywide protocols for staff, including law enforcement, that restrict federal immigration agents from entering non-public areas of city buildings without a judicial warrant.
«We’ve heard directly from residents who are afraid to leave their houses because of the concerning immigration activity happening locally and across our country. It’s heartbreaking to see the impacts on Everett families and businesses,» Franklin said in a statement.
«With this directive, we are setting clear protocols, protecting access to services and reinforcing our commitment to serving the entire community.»
ICE blasted the directive Friday, writing on X it «escalates tension and directs city law enforcement to intervene with ICE operations at their own discretion,» thereby «putting everyone at greater risk.»

ICE said Franklin was directing city workers to «impede ICE operations and expose the location of ICE officers and agents.»

During a city council meeting where she announced the policy, Franklin said «federal immigration enforcement is causing real fear for Everett residents.»
«It’s been heartbreaking to see the racial profiling that’s having an impact on Everett families and businesses,» she said. «We know there are kids staying home from school, people not going to work or people not going about their day, dining out or shopping for essentials.»
The mayor’s directive covers four main areas, including restricting federal immigration agents from accessing non-public areas of city buildings without a warrant, requiring immediate reporting of enforcement activity on city property and mandating clear signage to enforce access limits.

It also calls for an internal policy review and staff training, including the creation of an Interdepartmental Response Team and updated immigration enforcement protocols to ensure compliance with state law.
Franklin directed city staff to expand partnerships with community leaders, advocacy groups and regional governments to coordinate responses to immigration enforcement, while promoting immigrant-owned businesses and providing workplace protections and «know your rights» resources.
The mayor also reaffirmed a commitment to «constitutional policing and best practices,» stating that the police department will comply with state law barring participation in civil immigration enforcement. The directive outlines protocols for documenting interactions with federal officials, reviewing records requests and strengthening privacy safeguards and technology audits.

«We want everyone in the city of Everett to feel safe calling 911 when they need help and to know that Everett Police will not ask about your immigration status,» Franklin said during the council meeting. »I also expect our officers to intervene if it’s safe to do so to protect our residents when they witness federal officers using unnecessary force.»
