Europe’s left courts Muslim voters as anti-Israel politics reshape continent

It’s known as the «Red-Green Alliance» — a political coalition between Europe’s far-left parties and Islamist groups that is increasingly shaping policy, particularly regarding Israel as the continent experiences a worrying rise in antisemitism that critics are linking to this partnership.

With the rise of Muslim voters across Europe, many on the left and extreme-left are being influenced by this increasingly important voting bloc.

Just last week in the U.K., critics accused the left-wing Labour government of sanctioning Israel as a ploy to win back Muslim voters from the far-left, anti-Israel Green and Independent parties. Conservative lawmaker Tom Tugendhat called the sanctions’ announcement «performative politics.»

In Sunday’s parliamentary elections in Sweden, exit polling from the state broadcaster shows that votes from non-European Swedes are giving an alliance of left-wing parties a narrow three-seat lead over a right-leaning coalition led by current Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

One Swedish political researcher, Tobias Hübinette, pointed to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s win in New York City and said that the numbers in the Swedish election show that this «election meant a ‘Mamdanification’ of urban Sweden, and the gap between city and country is now larger than ever before,» he wrote on X.

«They should be in disagreement,» Simone Rodan-Benzaquen, the senior envoy to Europe at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies told Fox News Digital, «but the Islamists are very capable of covering that up for political purposes… The antisemitism that we have today, in particular in Western Europe, is definitely fed far more (by) the far left’s discourse.»

Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society in the U.K. said that, «For a decade, Europe has trained its anxieties almost exclusively on the far-right, and while that vigilance is warranted, it has left a blind spot on the other flank… Antisemitism is not less dangerous because it arrives waving a progressive banner.»

Germany-based Dresden University of Technology research fellow Janek Treiber said that, «There is indeed an intriguing alliance between the supposedly progressive Left and regressive forces within Islamism.» He told Fox News Digital that, «The unifying factor is a kind of victimization narrative. For the Left that supports the Palestinian cause, Muslims are the oppressed and the West – including Israel – are the oppressors… Whether Muslims hold conservative-religious views in this context is irrelevant.»

ANTI-MIGRANT AFD SEEKS TO BREAK GERMANY’S POLITICAL ‘FIREWALL’ IN HISTORIC STATE ELECTION

Voters in Berlin head to the ballot box this coming Sunday, with polls showing the far-left Die Linke party, literally translated as the «The Left», leading the center-right Christian Democratic Union by two points.

«In Berlin, a party polling at the top of the field has factions that share platforms, demonstrations and slogans with networks the German security services themselves link to Hamas and the PFLP,» Mendoza claimed. «When ‘Death to the IDF’ and ‘Intifada’ are chanted at an election event, and the response from parts of the party is to defend the man who led them, the red line has been erased, not crossed.»

Rodan-Benzaquen says that while Germany’s political «firewall» against far-right parties like the AfD «seems to work more or less on the right, it doesn’t on the left,» because, «there is a perception that whatever comes from the left, even the far-left, is not morally as repugnant as anything that comes from the right.»

ANTISEMITIC VIOLENCE REACHES DEADLIEST LEVEL SINCE 1994, NEW GLOBAL REPORT FINDS

Germany and the U.K. are not alone. The far-left Sumar party in Spain is part of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s ruling coalition. Their support in the last election was strongest in areas with high Muslim populations, with party members attending demonstrations with Muslim Brotherhood-adjacent groups and Gaza protests organized by Islamist-leaning networks. Members have also pushed for Spain to recognize a Palestinian state while also referring to Israel as an «apartheid state.» Spain recognized a Palestinian state in 2024.

The far-left La France Insoumise (LFI) party in France has been accused by academics and ministers of «Islamo‑leftism» after their de facto leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, refused to call Hamas a terrorist organization and party members marched with Islamist-linked NGOs during Gaza protests. The LFI’s popularity has been on the rise in polling ahead of next year’s presidential election and, according to French newspaper Le Monde, the LFI’s electoral strength lies in Muslim-majority suburban districts.

The Israeli Ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, recently told Fox News Digital that, «The way [LFI leader] Jean-Luc Mélenchon speaks in front of a crowd reminds me of Hitler. The way he uses the idea of uniting against one enemy by speaking of Israel is similar to the way Hitler used to speak about the Jews.»

Commenting on the sanctions imposed by the U.K. government on Israel, Britain’s Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis called the announcement on X «a truly dark day for British Jews.» His statement continued in part, «Gesture politics of this kind feeds into an increasingly hostile discourse about Israel,» he wrote, warning that the cumulative effect of such policies could «further embolden those, at home and abroad, who use hatred as a weapon against Jews.»

Pointing to the U.K., Rodan-Benzaquen said the alliance grew while Jeremy Corbyn was the Labour Party leader. «You have this far left anti-imperialist, anti-colonialist, opposition to American power and, of course, to Israel itself. An alliance with Islamist organizations and movements that sort of adopt a common language, despite the fact that on many topics they are in certain disagreement… They have basically turned themselves from a party that cared about class, that cared about improving (lives), social rights, etcetera, into a party that is basically looking at identity politics and is trying to appeal to certain voters.»

She said the red-green alliance is nothing new. «We’ve seen it for a long time. We’ve actually seen it in the Islamic Republic of Iran when the Islamic Revolution happened.»

Europe’s Muslim population is estimated to be 45–46 million, up by 15.9% from 2010, based on Pew Research Center projections. That same study revealed the population of European Jewry had fallen to under 1.3 million — down 8% from 2010.

Rodan-Benzaquen says of European Jews, «electorally, we don’t weigh,» so they have again become a political football. She says when left and far-left parties say, «Oh, we want to fight against antisemitism. The only reason why they’re saying it is because it’s a tool to attack the far-right.»

Supreme Court begins new term with high-profile look at clean air and federal authority

Published

on

The Supreme Court launched its new term Monday with a blockbuster oral argument over whether federal or state laws and courts should handle civil lawsuits against energy companies for alleged climate change harms.

Eight justices debated for nearly two hours on a key gateway over environmental liability — who decides and where. It was unclear after the public session how the court might rule.

Absent was Justice Samuel Alito, who recused last week after calls to step aside because he owns stock in oil companies, but not the two at the center of Monday’s appeal.

Local and state governments seek civil damages totaling billions of dollars, arguing it is necessary to help pay for rebuilding after wildfires, rising sea levels, and severe storms worsened by fossil fuel pollution.

SUPREME COURT CAN RESTORE SANITY AND STOP THE LEFT’S RADICAL CLIMATE AGENDA

Colorado’s highest court let the case brought by Boulder County proceed.

SUPREME COURT SIDES WITH CHEVRON, OIL COMPANIES IN LOUISIANA ENVIRONMENTAL LAWSUITS

The companies — backed by the Trump administration — counter emissions are a national issue that should be heard in federal court, where similar suits have been tossed out.

The justices will also decide whether they have jurisdiction to hear this dispute, or whether it belongs in state courts.

SUPREME COURT CLIMATE SHOWDOWN JOLTED BY ALITO’S LAST-MINUTE DECISION

Chief Justice John Roberts could be the deciding vote. He asked tough questions of both sides and his vote could produce a 4-4 tie with Alito not participating.

That would mean the specific lawsuit moves ahead in state courts. He said the court in the past has allowed similar claims to be decided outside the federal venue.

WAVE OF OVERLOOKED ‘LEFT-WING’ LAWSUITS COULD COME WITH AN UNEXPECTED PRICE TAG FOR AMERICANS

«There are a lot of familiar situations where conduct outside of the state has broad effects among other states, and yet we allow state courts in a particular state to bring litigation,» said Roberts. «I guess I’m not quite sure what makes this situation different from all those other ones, where we’ve allowed them to proceed in state court.»

Justice Elena Kagan compared the climate change lawsuits to previous claims against tobacco and opioid companies brought by states on behalf of their citizens.

THE SUPREME COURT IS BACK. THESE FIVE CASES COULD RESHAPE AMERICAN LIFE

«This is the same kind of lawsuit against the same kind of actors for the same kind of harm,» said Kagan. «Where does this principle come from, that states can’t regulate in the air and water space?»

But Justice Brett Kavanaugh seemed to speak for many of his conservative colleagues, on the implications for multi-jurisdictional lawsuits to play out, potentially for decades.

» It is going to bankrupt – if there are enough of these [lawsuits] — bankrupt these various defendants and certainly other defendants out there. Anyone is a potential defendant for a suit like this. Any manufacturer, any business,» suggested Kavanaugh.

«We don’t have to reinvent the wheel because we’ve said this multiple times,» he added, «and Congress, presumably, when doing the Clean Air Act and doing the Clean Air Act amendments, has relied on this Court’s precedents establishing that this kind of pollution is a federal law matter unless Congress speaks otherwise.»

The current litigation is part of dozens of lawsuits brought by states and municipalities across the country.

Boulder County, located north-west of Denver, sued in 2018.

Among the defendants is Suncor, a Canadian-based energy giant that operates the only major oil refinery in Colorado. ExxonMobil, the largest oil company in the U.S., is also a defendant.

Local officials claim the energy firms have misled the public about their role in climate change, and say financial penalties are necessary to mitigate ongoing harms in their communities, including recent forest fires and worsening air pollution.

Some states also accuse the current administration of rolling back mandated protections in the Clean Air Act and thereby abdicating their regulatory authority.

But the companies and the Trump Justice Department argue climate change should be addressed by the national government in federal court, and that the Clean Air Act limits what individual states and counties can do.

They say this global problem is not limited to any one energy sector or country, and cannot be resolved by what they call local «power grabs.»

Some litigators believe the companies could fare better in federal court since they would not have to juggle dozens of ongoing lawsuits in multiple jurisdictions.

«Interstate air pollution is an inherently federal area,» Sarah Harris, a Justice Department lawyer, told the court. «This suit egregiously exceeds constitutional limits on state authority,» Harris told the justices.

With the possibility of an evenly divided court, the eight justices may not have to reach the merits of the federalism question.

The Supreme Court specifically asked both parties to address at argument whether it should even hear the case, at least at this stage. That procedural «exit ramp» could put the larger issues off for another day.

«I understand that you have several other federal issues that you have raised that are still pending in the state court,» Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson asked the oil companies lawyer Kannon Shanmugam. «So why shouldn’t we wait and hear all of these claims once the state courts are done with their federal considerations?»

The case is Suncor Energy Inc. v. Commissioners of Boulder County, CO (25-170).

A decision is expected by next spring.

Published

on

Published

on
