Capitol Police arrest protesters disrupting budget markup as Cory Booker thanks them for defending Medicaid
More than two dozen protesters were arrested for disrupting the House Energy and Commerce’s budget reconciliation markup on Tuesday, as Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., thanked those holding court in the hallway.
«Around 2 p.m., 26 people were arrested for illegally demonstrating in the Rayburn House Office Building. They were arrested for 22-1307 Crowding, Obstructing, and Incommoding. It is against the law to protest inside the Congressional Buildings,» the U.S. Capitol Police Department told Fox News Digital.
Dozens of protesters, many in wheelchairs, filled the halls outside the John D. Dingell Room in the Rayburn House Office Building on Tuesday afternoon, chanting, «No cuts to Medicaid!» Several protesters, who were blocking the entrance to the committee room, were wheeled away and arrested by Capitol police after multiple warnings.
A defiant Booker walked by the budget markup during its first hour and was greeted by the cheers and whistles of those protesting Medicaid cuts. Booker, who spent more than 12 hours protesting President Donald Trump’s agenda on the steps of the U.S. Capitol just two weeks ago, thanked the protesters for showing up to protect Medicaid.

A Capitol police officer confirmed to Fox News Digital that disruptors were arrested for protesting and would be processed and released immediately. Many protesters remained in the hallway during the first few hours of the markup as others were removed for shouting during the representative’s testimonies and subsequently arrested.

«The audience is supportive that you’re all here and participating. We want you here. You’re part of the process. We want you to be here, but we have to proceed. And the rules of the House, and the law is that – if you’re disruptive, you’ll be removed, and you’re subject to arrest. I don’t make that decision, the Capitol Police does,» Kentucky Republican Rep. Brett Guthrie, Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, said following one of several disruptions by protesters.
Inside the budget markup, Democrats and Republicans sparred over rhetoric about Medicaid cuts. Democrats claimed the Republican budget bill would cut vital access to Medicaid, with many representatives sharing stories of their constituents who have benefited from its services. Meanwhile, Republicans accused Democrats of lying to the American people about Medicaid cuts – a word Guthrie deterred his colleagues from using.
«I want to send one very clear message: you’re being lied to. The other side is telling you a lot of things about this legislation. I’m not sure they have read this legislation,» Rep. Richard Hudson, R-N.C., who chairs the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee, said.
Republicans mostly avoided the deep cuts to Medicaid pushed by fiscal conservatives in the House Republican Conference, which could serve to benefit moderate Republicans who have fielded relentless attacks from Democrats over potential Medicaid cuts. House Republicans, however, have vowed to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program.

The committee’s budget markup includes increased regulations and program cuts to Medicaid, including tightened address verification requirements, ensuring deceased individuals are not enrolled, more provider screening requirements, removing excess Medicaid payments, revising home equity limits for determining eligibility, prohibiting illegal immigrants from obtaining Medicaid services, ensuring accurate payments, prohibiting funding for gender transition procedures for minors and requirements for states to establish Medicaid community engagement programs.
«This budget does not cut Medicaid, Medicare or Social Security benefits for the Americans who truly need them. We are strengthening and protecting Medicaid for pregnant women, children, individuals with disabilities, low-income seniors and vulnerable families. These Americans will continue to have access to the care they need and deserve. What we are doing is eliminating waste, fraud and abuse,» Rep. Erin Houchin, R-Indiana, told the committee.
But despite Republicans’ assurances that the proposed budget does not cut Medicaid, Democrats testified, one after the other, about the threats program cuts pose to Americans.

«They are cutting this Medicaid care and these Medicaid dollars to pay for tax cuts for Elon Musk and billionaires, so this money isn’t even going towards funding better care for people who are eligible… We are cutting money and health care from people and families who are suffering, to pay for tax cuts for the rich. It is a crime happening in front of the American public right now,» Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said.
The proposed legislation would put a new 80-hour-per-month work requirement on certain able-bodied adults receiving Medicaid, aged 19 through 64.
It would also put guardrails on states spending funds on their expanded Medicaid populations. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) allowed states to expand Medicaid coverage to adults who make up to 138% of the poverty level.

More specifically, states that provide Medicaid coverage to illegal immigrants could see their federal Medicaid reimbursement dollars diminished, putting more of that cost on the state itself.
The bill would also require states with expanded Medicaid populations to perform eligibility checks every six months to ensure the system is not being abused.

The Energy & Commerce Committee, which has broad jurisdiction, including over federal health programs, telecommunications and energy, was tasked with finding at least $880 billion in spending cuts to pay for other priorities in Trump’s «big, beautiful bill.»
Guthrie told House Republicans on a lawmaker-only call on Sunday night that the panel had found «north of $900 billion» in savings.

La trilogía compuesta por Los tres mosqueteros (1844), Veinte años después (1845) y El vizconde de Bragelonne (1850) se desarrolla en la Francia del siglo XVII, un periodo tumultuoso marcado por las intrigas cortesanas, los conflictos políticos y las guerras.
Alexandre Dumas padre (1802-1870) transforma esta época en un escenario épico en el que los mosqueteros, figuras de lealtad y heroísmo, encarnan valores como la valentía, la amistad y la fidelidad.
Estas obras entretuvieron, pero también alimentaron la percepción de la historia francesa de los lectores y, más tarde, los espectadores, tan pronto como Hollywood se apoderó del tema. Entre la fidelidad histórica y la libertad creativa, las novelas han marcado profundamente el imaginario cultural colectivo.
Dumas utiliza la historia como telón de fondo, un lienzo sobre el que borda tramas a menudo complejas. Esta parcialidad demuestra su ambición: dotar a la historia de una dimensión novelesca en la que la acción, el suspense y la emoción priman sobre la veracidad de los acontecimientos. Por lo tanto, su trilogía no debe considerarse en absoluto un libro de historia.
Personajes reales como Richelieu, Luis XIII o Ana de Austria son los protagonistas de la trilogía. Dumas los adapta a su trama, creando caracteres más grandes que la vida. Richelieu, por ejemplo, se convierte en un símbolo de la manipulación política y las intrigas secretas, mucho más maquiavélico en la novela que lo que fue en realidad. D’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos y Aramis, aunque inspirados en mosqueteros que tal vez existieron, también están construidos como arquetipos del honor, el coraje y la amistad.
Dumas construye sus personajes como mitos, encarnaciones de virtudes o vicios. En este sentido, contribuye a una percepción de la historia en la que el heroísmo prevalece sobre la realidad. Aunque complejos, los antagonistas se reducen a una dimensión casi “monomaníaca” y se convierten en estereotipos como el del villano, el conspirador, el espía…
Los saltos temporales entre Los tres mosqueteros y Veinte años después o El vizconde de Bragelonne permiten a Dumas abordar épocas distintas manteniendo la continuidad narrativa. Las novelas abarcan así varias décadas de la historia francesa y dan al lector una impresión de continuidad lógica. Pero esta libertad narrativa conduce a una visión lineal y simplificada de la historia.
A través de sus mosqueteros, Dumas construye una visión heroica y favorecedora de la historia de Francia. D’Artagnan y sus compañeros representan el espíritu francés, capaz de resistir conspiraciones y conflictos para defender los ideales de justicia y lealtad. Con sus aventuras, Dumas también transmite una forma de patriotismo: muestra personajes que, a pesar de las disputas y las luchas de poder, siguen apegados a su país y a su rey.

El objetivo principal de Dumas seguía siendo entretener y apasionar a sus lectores, no darles una clase de historia. Pero precisamente porque la historia es omnipresente, tanto como marco como fuente de intrigas y personajes, el receptor tiene la impresión de que todo es verdad.

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., is urging Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem to declassify all documents related to the assassination attempt on then-presidential candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024.
Hawley’s request comes a year after 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired off several shots at Trump from a rooftop near the presidential rally grounds. The gunman had a clear shot and grazed the president’s ear.
Even after a year, though, questions still remain about how Crooks was able to get a clear shot.
In his letter to Noem, Hawley mentions the one-year anniversary of the first assassination attempt on Trump.

«This occasion marks a deeply troubling chapter in our nation’s history and serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency in preserving public trust during moments of national crisis,» he wrote. «To that end, I urge you to take the necessary steps to declassify all documents within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) related to the events of July 13, 2024.
«As you know, assassination attempts against current and former presidents are rare but profoundly consequential events in American life,» Hawley continued. «And the American people rightly expect full transparency from their government.»
The senator pointed to investigation stonewalling tactics from the Biden administration’s Secret Service and DHS, which he said ultimately denied basic facts to the American people.

«The public learned far more from whistleblowers than they did from public officials, and I released a report documenting these disclosures, many of which have been corroborated to date,» Hawley wrote. «In October of last year, in a unanimous vote, the Homeland Security Committee passed my legislation requiring the Secret Service release to the public all pertinent documents.
«Now, I am requesting that you immediately declassify and release all documents relating to the first assassination attempt on President Trump within the full extent of your authority, subject only to the narrowest possible redactions necessary to protect ongoing operations or individual safety,» he said. «The public deserves a full and accurate account of this event, the circumstances that allowed it to happen, and the steps the government has taken since to strengthen protective measures.»
Hawley requested a complete inventory of all classified or non-public materials related to the first assassination attempt on Trump, including reports, internal communications, threat assessments, after-action reviews and coordinated records with other agencies.

He also requested a formal explanation for the continued classification of materials Noem believes must remain restricted, as well as a proposed plan and timeline for the immediate declassification and public release of all remaining documents, all by July 30, 2025.
Fox News Digital has reached out to DHS for comment on the matter.
Hawley released a report in September, detailing the failures of the Secret Service in connection with the attempted assassination of Trump in July, which included whistleblower allegations that are «highly damaging to the credibility» of the agency.
The report uncovered a «compounding pattern of negligence, sloppiness, and gross incompetence that goes back years, all of which culminated in an assassination attempt that came inches from succeeding.»

Hawley accused the Secret Service, FBI and DHS of all trying «to evade real accountability.»
«These agencies and their leaders have slow-walked congressional investigations, misled the American people, and shirked responsibility,» the report states.
After the first of two assassination attempts against Trump in just over two months, Hawley visited the Butler rally site to interview whistleblowers and opened up a whistleblower tip line, encouraging those with relevant information to share with officials.
Documents subpoenaed by the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs also show major failures among the six U.S. Secret Service (USSS) agents who were suspended without pay in response to the assassination attempt.
The documents were based on interviews with the agents and their colleagues and revealed that several agents admitted the existence of major security concerns at the Butler rally, but none of them elevated the concerns or helped produce a plan to properly cover the roof that provided Crooks a clear shot of Trump.

The documents show that some agents in charge never even conducted walk-throughs of the site. For example, the lead advance agent, documents show, never did a final security walk-through of the rally site because she was in the hospital for heat exhaustion, the special agent in charge said when questioned.
Some of the agents were suspended without pay for various terms, though none of the agents were fired.
