‘Get a job’: Medicaid work requirements included in Trump’s megabill sparks partisan debate on Capitol Hill

Democrats have railed against potential Medicaid cuts since President Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election. Now that his «big, beautiful bill» has passed through Congress, they are making Medicaid a top talking point ahead of competitive midterm elections expected in 2026.
Republicans, meanwhile, are doubling down on Medicaid reform included in Trump’s megabill, which also includes sweeping legislation on taxes, immigration and energy.
«My policy is if you’re an able-bodied worker, get a damn job,» Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., told Fox News Digital. «If you want government benefits, go to work and get a job.»
A provision in the megabill requires able-bodied, childless adults between the ages of 18 and 64 to work at least 80 hours a month to be eligible to receive Medicaid benefits. Individuals can also meet the requirement by participating in community service, going to school or engaging in a work program.

Fox News Digital asked lawmakers on Capitol Hill if taxpayers should have to pay for Medicaid bills for able-bodied workers who are under 65 and unemployed.

Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine, said in both Arkansas and Georgia, where work requirements have already been imposed, it ended up costing taxpayers more money to administer the work requirements.
«We’re talking about a very small population, and in the two cases where they tried it, it ended up, number one, disqualifying people who met all the requirements but gave up on the paperwork. These aren’t people that are used to filling out a lot of paperwork every month. And it also cost the state a lot to administer,» King said.
The New England Journal of Medicine found that Arkansas’ Medicaid work requirement from 2018 to 2019 «found no evidence of increased employment … and a significant loss of Medicaid coverage among low-income adults.»

Similarly, the Georgia Budget & Policy Institute (GBPI) reported that 80% of the $58 million spent in the first year of Georgia’s Pathways to Coverage program went toward administrative costs.
But Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., emphasized that Republicans «want these programs to be around for the people who need them.» She said Medicaid reform is about «strengthening and preserving these programs at the rate that they’re growing.»
«These programs were intended to be safety nets, not hammocks that people stay in, and the success of these programs should be measured by how many people we get off of them,» Britt said.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., agreed, telling Fox News Digital, «What you don’t want is for somebody to become dependent. I’d tell people: safety nets should bounce you to your feet. They shouldn’t be like flypaper in which you stick and can never get off.»

«We’re not saying, ‘Hey, we’re not throwing you out.’ All right, but you gotta go get a job. You either get a job, or actually you can even volunteer, all right? And that will satisfy the requirements for work,» Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., explained.
But Democrats who spoke to Fox News Digital continued to push back against the work requirements included in the «big, beautiful bill.»
«I think people [who] are able to work, trust me, they’d rather work than to get the piddling dollars that they get from Medicaid. It’s insulting to suggest that a person would rather sit at home rather than work and get this meager amount of money. All of this has just been totally expanded to fit a narrative that allows them to cut into those people who really deserve Medicaid,» Rep. Troy Carter, D-La., said.

And Rep. Lateefah Simon, D-Calif., said, «We need to be able to have an infrastructure in this country that supports the elderly and the sick and the widows and the child. This bill, it violates all those basic principles.»

Rusia triplicó la letalidad de sus ataques con drones, son cada vez más masivos y Ucrania busca defensas que le permitan resistir
Las defensas antiaéreas ucranianas enfrentan su mayor desafío desde el inicio de la invasión rusa, ya que los ataques masivos con drones logran penetrar las líneas defensivas a un ritmo sin precedentes, según datos oficiales analizados por el Financial Times.
Los ataques coordinados con drones Shahed, de diseño iraní pero ahora fabricados en territorio ruso, están saturando los sistemas defensivos ucranianos mediante tácticas de “enjambre” que han triplicado la tasa de impactos exitosos en los últimos meses.
Según información de la fuerza aérea ucraniana citada por el Financial Times, aproximadamente el 15% de los drones lograron penetrar las defensas entre abril y junio de este año, un aumento significativo respecto al 5% registrado en los tres meses anteriores.
El volumen de ataques también se ha intensificado considerablemente. Un ejemplo notable ocurrió durante el fin de semana, cuando Rusia lanzó 426 drones de ataque tipo Shahed en una sola operación nocturna que se extendió hasta las primeras horas del lunes, según reportes de las fuerzas aéreas ucranianas.
“El problema no es que las defensas aéreas ucranianas estén empeorando. Lo que vemos es que las nuevas tácticas de enjambre y los drones ahora vuelan a mayor altitud, lo que los hace más efectivos”, explicó Yasir Atalan, del Centro de Estudios Estratégicos e Internacionales, al diario británico.
Moscú ha demostrado una notable capacidad de adaptación en sus técnicas de combate, implementando modificaciones que han incrementado significativamente la efectividad de los drones Shahed, relativamente lentos en comparación con otros proyectiles.
Las innovaciones incluyen ajustes que permiten a los drones volar a velocidades superiores y operar más allá del alcance de las ametralladoras montadas en camiones que Ucrania utiliza tradicionalmente para derribarlos.
Rusia ha denominado “Geran” (geranio) a sus versiones adaptadas y producidas domésticamente de los Shahed, siguiendo la práctica soviética de nombrar armamento con nombres de flores. La variante Geran-3, equipada con motor turbo y capaz de alcanzar hasta 800 kilómetros por hora en picada, ha sido empleada contra Kiev en las últimas semanas, según analistas citados por el FT.
El aumento en la producción doméstica de estos drones ha permitido a Rusia ejecutar ataques de saturación masiva. El 9 de julio se registró un ataque récord cuando las fuerzas rusas desplegaron 728 drones Shahed y señuelos, además de siete misiles de crucero Iskander y seis misiles balísticos Kinzhal lanzados desde aeronaves.
“El incremento en el tamaño de los lanzamientos satura los sistemas defensivos, lo que aumenta la tasa de impacto”, agregó Atalan al Financial Times.
“En lugar de desplegar 500 drones por todo el país como solían hacer, las fuerzas rusas ahora atacan una o dos ciudades a la vez”, afirmó Oleksandr Matviienko, experto en drones de Counteroffensive Pro, una publicación especializada en tecnología de defensa ucraniana.
Las defensas actuales de Ucrania contra los Shahed incluyen guerra electrónica para interferir con sus sistemas de guía GPS, ametralladoras y cañones antiaéreos, incluyendo el avanzado Oerlikon Skynex, un cañón de defensa aérea producido por la empresa alemana Rheinmetall.

Según Oleksandr Matviienko, para ser efectivos, estos nuevos drones anti-drones necesitarían alcanzar altitudes de 6 kilómetros y velocidades de 200 kilómetros por hora para interceptar los Shahed.
Andrew Turner, director ejecutivo de Saibre Capital y ex mariscal del aire de la Real Fuerza Aérea británica, describió al Financial Times la evolución de las defensas de drones y misiles de Ucrania como típica de la competencia constante entre nuevas innovaciones en la guerra aérea.

New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has remained silent almost two days after an off-duty Border Patrol officer was shot in the face, allegedly by a previously deported illegal immigrant in his city.
Mamdani’s social media posts and website show no public statement on the matter, which has become national news and sparked a broader discussion of President Joe Biden’s border policies and criticism of sanctuary cities.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comment but did not immediately hear back.
According to police, the suspect, Dominican national Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, was seen on video getting off a scooter before approaching the officer while he was sitting and speaking to someone near a body of water. The officer has not yet been identified.

The officer, who was not in uniform, pulled out a gun to protect himself, and a shootout ensued.
The agent was hit in the face and forearm and transported to a hospital, where he is currently in stable condition. He is expected to survive.
Nunez was shot in the leg and groin during the shootout, police said. He was dropped off at a hospital in the Bronx, according to authorities.
«Sanctuary politicians must condemn this violence and put the safety and security of our citizens first. Make no mistake: these criminal illegal aliens pulled the trigger, but Zohran Mamdani, and other sanctuary politicians in this country have blood on their hands,» Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News Digital in a statement.
«Secretary Noem is calling on every politician at every level of government to abandon these reckless, lawless policies and stop playing Russian roulette with American lives. DHS will continue to flood the zone in sanctuary cities and remove these criminals one by one,» she added.

DHS also told Fox News that Nunez has an active warrant for kidnapping in the state of Massachusetts, in addition to prior felony arrests.
«We were able to bring the second individual in and have detained him as well, and he will face consequences and hopefully strong prosecution for his crimes and his involvement on Saturday night,» Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters Monday.

President Donald Trump weighed in on the shooting Sunday afternoon, writing that «an incredible CBP Officer was shot in the face by an Illegal Alien Monster freed into the Country under Joe Biden.»
Mamdani has been widely criticized for his previous calls to defund the police and his stated opposition to working with Trump to deport illegal immigrants if he is elected mayor in November.
Mamdani said in June after winning the primary race that he would halt «masked» U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials from «deporting our neighbors.»

The mayoral hopeful announced on Sunday that he was headed to Uganda «in a personal capacity» to celebrate his marriage to his wife, Rama, with their family and friends.
«I do want to apologize to the haters, because I will be coming back,» he said, adding he would return to New York City «by the end of the month.»
Federal immigration authorities have faced an increase in public scrutiny from Democrats and left-wing activist groups, even to the point of violence. Border Patrol was targeted in an ambush earlier this month at an annex facility in McAllen, Texas, in which a local police officer was hit in the leg, and two Border Patrol personnel were injured. The gunman was killed.

In addition, 12 individuals are facing charges, including 10 for attempted murder of federal officers, in an Independence Day attack outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, intended to target ICE agents. A police officer was shot in the neck but is expected to recover, and cars were vandalized.
Overall, ICE agents have faced an 830% increase in assaults since this time last year as the Trump administration continues to ramp up deportation and immigration enforcement efforts, according to DHS.
«Rocks, Molotov cocktails, and even gunfire. Our brave ICE agents are facing attacks at a level never seen before in America – an 830% increase. Stand for the homeland. Stand for law and order. Stand with ICE,» Homeland Security posted to X last week.
Fox News Digital reached out to ICE and CBP for comment but did not immediately hear back.
