REAL ID renews America’s age-old dread of the DMV
A stricter identity verification requirement for U.S. residents is slated to take force next week after 20 years of delay. And for many, the law will require a visit to one of the nation’s most notorious, time-honored places of dread: the Department of Motor Vehicles.
These facilities can vary slightly both in name and in acronym: Texans, for example, have a Department of Public Safety or DPS; Floridians dub theirs the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles or HSMV. (Add to the mix the DDS, the BMV and the MVD, it’s a veritable alphabet soup.)
Despite the different names, each of these state-run facilities serves the same purpose: to license drivers and issue identification cards to residents living in the state. They share the same wait times and inspire the same feelings of burden and loathing.
But for individuals in some states, things are about to get a lot worse, fast.

On May 7, all U.S. residents will be required to show a «REAL ID-compliant» form of identification to board any flights, including international and domestic travel, or to enter any federal buildings in compliance with a long-stalled federal law passed by Congress in 2005.
A REAL ID is a state-issued driver’s license or state-issued identification card that meets certain federal standards, and it requires individuals to provide additional documentation, such as several documents proving current state residency – a utility agreement and lease, for example – as well as a certified birth certificate, among other things.
REAL IDs are now issued by all state DMVs (or BMVs or HSMVs) in anticipation of the fast-approaching enforcement date. REAL ID-compliant ID cards and licenses are marked with a star or other symbol in the right-hand corner, and some states, including Texas and Florida, have been issuing them for years.
But because DMVs are operated at a state and not federal level, compliance with the tighter verification standards has until recently been optional. That’s prompted a patchwork of compliance across the U.S. and a recent, frenzied panic from residents in states whose DMVs have not met the REAL ID standards.
NEED REAL ID IN A HURRY? HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS OUTSIDE THE DMV

In the final days before the new law takes effect, some U.S. residents are learning for the first time, to their horror, that their IDs are not up to snuff.
That’s prompted a surge of last-minute appointments in some states as drivers frantically look to obtain these new IDs. In others, appointments are nearly impossible to come by.
New Jersey, for example, currently has no appointments available at any of its DMV facilities in the state. That could be a major problem for travelers in the Garden State, whose REAL ID compliance is the lowest in the country at 17% last month, according to data compiled by CBS News.
Other nearby states are reporting similar compliance rates, with Pennsylvania at 26% compliance and New York with 43%, which is less than half of all residents living in the state.
For individuals in these states, the REAL ID compliance standards amount to what could be a travel nightmare, especially ahead of the summer holiday season when airports brace for a sharp uptick in traffic.
As of January 2024, just 56% of state-issued drivers’ licenses and identification cards were compliant with the new REAL ID requirements, according to DHS estimates. It’s unclear how much that percentage has changed in the last year.
«DHS anticipates that a significant number of individuals seeking to use their DL/ID for a REAL ID official purposes on and after May 7, 2025, may not have a compliant DL/ID,» the agency said in a memo last September.

In January, DHS issued a slightly more optimistic projection in the Federal Register, anticipating that by May 7, up to 66% of U.S. ID holders would have the new legally required ID.
But in the final days before the law takes force, it’s hard to ascertain exactly where things stand. Horror stories persist in some states of drivers struggling to obtain the new ID, and in others, state lawmakers are hoping to be granted a delay.
In Kentucky, a group of state lawmakers led by Senate Transportation Committee Chair Jimmy Higdon, R-Lebanon, urged DHS Secretary Kristi Noem to delay the REAL ID enforcement date, citing «growing concerns» from state residents who have been unable to access driver’s licensing services due to «limited appointment availability and long lines for walk-ins.»
«This simple request is to protect Kentuckians from bureaucratic burdens,» Higdon said in the letter. «Rural residents, seniors, and families still have hurdles in front of them, and in a lot of cases, may not be aware of their options. Only about 40 percent of our residents have a REAL ID, but I would also like more time to help Kentuckians understand that they may not need a REAL ID. Kentucky has made a good faith effort, but we just aren’t there yet.»
TSA has warned that individuals who don’t have the right ID before that date could be subject to significantly longer wait times or other disruptions to travel. This could impact travel plans for millions of Americans ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer traveling season.

Others could be barred from accessing certain federal buildings.
And the problem persists in other states as well: CBS News found in its April survey that at least 17 states have compliance rates of 50% or less, with 30 states at less than 70% compliance.

Al ser interrogado por los obstáculos para un acuerdo, Trump ha afirmado que “piden cosas que no se pueden hacer”. “Nos han trasladado lo que opinan del acuerdo y he dicho que sencillamente no es aceptable”, ha explicado.
El anuncio de la reunión ocurre en un momento crítico, dado que el régimen de Irán ha amenazado con tomar represalias en caso de que el Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica (OIEA) apruebe una resolución en su contra. Este posible movimiento por parte del OIEA, impulsado por el apoyo de Reino Unido, Francia, Alemania y Estados Unidos, podría exacerbar aún más las tensiones en torno al programa nuclear iraní.
Teherán ha advertido que reducirá significativamente su cooperación técnica con el organismo de la ONU si la resolución se lleva a cabo.
El portavoz de la Organización de Energía Atómica de Irán, Behrouz Kamalvandi, ha declarado que su país tomará medidas de represalia contra cualquier resolución crítica. En una entrevista con la televisión estatal iraní, Kamalvandi subrayó que el OIEA no debería esperar que Irán continúe con una cooperación considerada “amistosa y amplia”.
Esta postura se produce después de que el último informe técnico de la agencia, publicado el 31 de mayo, indicara que Teherán ha casi duplicado su producción de uranio enriquecido al 60%, acercándose a niveles que podrían ser utilizados con fines militares.
Durante su intervención, Trump no solo se refirió a las negociaciones nucleares sino también a una gama de temas internacionales, incluyendo la captura del buque humanitario ‘Madleen’, en el que viajaba la activista sueca Greta Thunberg. Trump la describió como una “persona enfadada” y le recomendó asistir a una clase de gestión de la ira. Además, destacó que Irán está implicado en las negociaciones para la liberación de rehenes secuestrados en la Franja de Gaza, reiterando su deseo de repatriar a los secuestrados.
Por su parte, la oficina de Netanyahu emitió una declaración oficial tras su conversación con Trump, destacando que Estados Unidos ha presentado una propuesta razonable a Irán y está a la espera de una respuesta. Esta propuesta llega en un periodo en el que las tensiones con Irán han aumentado debido a la falta de transparencia en su programa nuclear, como afirmó el OIEA tras identifying la presencia de material nuclear no declarado en sitios críticos de Irán.
En respuesta a la presión internacional, el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Irán, Abás Araqchí, indicó en la plataforma social X que Irán respondería enérgicamente a cualquier violación de sus derechos y criticó a los países europeos por tomar acciones provocativas. Estas declaraciones tienen lugar justo antes de la reunión de la Junta de Gobernadores del OIEA en Viena, donde se espera discutir el informe reciente que detalla las actividades nucleares de Irán.
En última instancia, el director general del OIEA, Rafael Grossi, ha insistido en que si Irán no coopera plena y efectivamente, el organismo no podrá garantizar que el programa nuclear de Irán sea exclusivamente pacífico. The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Monday that it will look into any organized effort to create chaos in Los Angeles, as anti-ICE riots occurred over the weekend.
«We’re investigating anyone who crosses the line from first-amendment protected activity to violence and are prepared to prosecute anyone who assaults a federal officer or causes damage to government property,» Laura Eimiller, media coordinator for the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, told Fox News Digital in an email.
«LAPD, as you know, is also making arrests for unlawful assembly. Obviously, any evidence of a criminal conspiracy will be investigated,» she continued.

Dozens have been arrested in Los Angeles as cars have been burned and tensions between rioters and law enforcement tended to escalate later in the day over the weekend, and more unrest could occur on Monday night.
President Donald Trump has sent in National Guard troops to reign in the riots, which the state of California is suing over, as Democratic leaders argue it’s only instigating.
Andy Ngo of The Post Millennial reported that Antifa and others are likely playing a role in the riots, as Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., said that she’ll be introducing legislation to «designate ANTIFA as a terrorist organization.»

On Monday during a press conference announcing a lawsuit against the Trump administration for deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles, California Attorney General Rob Bonta told Fox News Digital he acknowledged that «outside folks» will «sometimes embed themselves or use the protest as cover.»
«If you don’t follow the law, we will find you, and we will come for you, and we will hold you accountable,» Bonta said.

As for non-violent protests, many of the demonstrations stem from left-wing groups, including the Service Employees International Union, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, and the Party for Socialism and Liberation.
The SEIU has organized anti-ICE rallies across the country following the arrest of the union’s California president, David Huerta, as he is facing federal charges for allegedly getting in the way of an ICE crackdown. Huerta was released Monday from federal custody.
«ICE’s brutal, military-style tactics have no place in our communities. We demand safety. We demand respect. We demand David’s release,» SEIU posted to X on Monday.

The Post reported that CHIRLA won $450,000 in grants from the Biden-era DHS, but $100,936 of «remaining, unobligated federal funding» for the award given to the group was scrapped by the Trump administration in March, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin posted to X on Sunday.
The organization received millions in grants while President Joe Biden was in office, according to the outlet. The Post further reported that the PSL has ties to the Chinese Communist Party because of its backing from tech billionaire Neville Singham.
Fox News Digital has reached out to SEIU, the PSL, and CHIRLA for comment.

El presidente de Colombia, Gustavo Petro, denunció que el dispositivo de seguridad del senador y aspirante presidencial Miguel Uribe «fue disminuido extrañamente» antes de ser baleado.
El sábado, el dirigente del opositor Centro Democrático, el principal partido de derecha del país, recibió tres impactos de bala durante un evento de campaña en Bogotá. Está en cuidados intensivos con pronóstico reservado.
Petro aseguró que el número de escoltas fue reducido «el día del atentado». Pasó de «7 a 3 personas» previo al ataque, dijo en la red social X.
En Colombia la seguridad de políticos de alto perfil o personas amenazadas está a cargo de una entidad oficial llamada Unidad Nacional de Protección (UNP).
El abogado de Uribe dijo este lunes que presentó una denuncia penal contra el director de la UNP, pues este año hizo más de 20 solicitudes para reforzar el esquema de seguridad de su cliente, pero supuestamente no fueron escuchadas.
El jurista pidió a la fiscalía abrir una investigación que «establezca si por omisión el Estado dejó en indefensión» a Uribe.
Sin embargo, la fiscal general, Luz Adriana Camargo, dijo a periodistas que Uribe tenía un esquema de seguridad igual al de otros congresistas: siete escoltas y dos automóviles blindados.

La fiscal no mencionó que el dispositivo se haya reducido, en una rueda de prensa que ofreció este lunes para brindar avances de la investigación.
Un adolescente de 15 años fue capturado por los guardaespaldas de Uribe como sospechoso de intentar asesinar al aspirante presidencial para las elecciones de 2026.
En videos de cámaras de seguridad se ve que lo persiguen una decena de personas.
Uribe fue impactado por dos proyectiles en la cabeza y otro en la rodilla, según los paramédicos. El político de 39 años pasó por una primera cirugía la madrugada del domingo.
La clínica Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá informó el lunes que Uribe «ha tenido una escasa respuesta a las intervenciones y los manejos médicos realizados».
«Su situación reviste de la máxima gravedad. Por lo tanto, el pronóstico continúa siendo de carácter reservado», agregó en un comunicado.
La fiscal general aseguró este lunes que el menor capturado podría pasar hasta ocho años privado de libertad si es hallado culpable, aunque no en una cárcel común debido a su edad.
Camargo añadió en una rueda de prensa que el adolescente fue operado debido a una herida de bala que recibió en una pierna antes de ser detenido. Será interrogado cuando se recupere totalmente de la herida, dijo la fiscal.
Una de las hipótesis es que fue contratado por una «red sicarial» que busca a menores de edad para ejecutar «conductas tan graves como» el atentado contra Uribe.
Las autoridades aún buscan a los autores intelectuales del hecho.
Uribe no denunció sufrir amenazas de muerte ante la fiscalía, según Camargo.
El director de la policía, general Carlos Triana, informó que el arma modelo Glock aparentemente utilizada para herir a Uribe fue adquirida legalmente en Arizona, Estados Unidos, en 2020. Se desconoce cómo ingresó a Colombia.
El ministro de Defensa, Pedro Sánchez, aseguró el domingo que se manejan varias hipótesis sobre los motivos del atentado al senador: una es que se trató de un mensaje contra el Centro Democrático, que lidera el influyente expresidente Álvaro Uribe.
El ex mandatario, que gobernó entre 2002 y 2010, denunció de su lado otro presunto ataque. «La inteligencia internacional me informa de la preparación de otro atentado en mi contra», afirmó en la red social X.
Según el ministro Sánchez, otra hipótesis de lo ocurrido el sábado es que sea un intento de «desestabilizar» al gobierno del presidente izquierdista Gustavo Petro, a quien sectores de la derecha acusan de incitar el odio contra la oposición.
El atentado contra Miguel Uribe tensa la carrera por la presidencia de Colombia, que recién empieza.
En medio de fuertes disputas entre la izquierda de Petro y la oposición que busca recuperar el poder, un puñado de políticos anunciaron que aspiran a ser mandatarios. Uribe lo hizo en octubre pasado y ya convocaba mitínes.
El general Triana aseguró que el Estado fortalecerá la seguridad de por lo menos 30 precandidatos.
La primera vuelta de los comicios presidenciales será el 31 de mayo de 2026 y un eventual balotaje está programado para el 21 de junio.
