Robert F. Kennedy assassin, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, denied parole by California governor

Published

on

California Gov. Gavin Newsom denied parole Thursday for Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s assassin, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan.

Sirhan was found suitable for parole in August by a two-person panel. However, the California Parole Board’s staff had 120 days to review the decision, and the governor had another 30 days to approve, deny or modify it.

Newsom explained his decision to overrule the parole board’s recommendation in an editorial published by the Los Angeles Times.

«After carefully reviewing the case, including records in the California State Archives, I have determined that Sirhan has not developed the accountability and insight required to support his safe release into the community,» Newsom wrote. «I must reverse Sirhan’s parole grant.»

He went on to say that though Sirhan is now 77 and decades have passed, he «remains a potent symbol of political violence.»

«He does not understand, let alone have the skills to manage, the complex risks of his self-created notoriety,» Newsom said. «He cannot be safely released from prison because he has not mitigated his risk of fomenting further political violence.»

It was the 16th time Sirhan sought parole following his conviction for assassinating Kennedy, 42, in the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968.

The presidential hopeful had been celebrating his victory in the state’s Democratic primary and died a day after the shooting.

The Kennedy family released a statement following Newsom’s denial of Sirhan’s parole, thanking the governor for his decision. While they said they support parole for inmates who have shown genuine remorse and reform, Kennedy’s widow and children do not believe that applies to Sirhan.

«Instead of contrition, this inmate points to what he sees on the clock rather than to what he knows in his heart, believing somehow that the passage of time is expiation enough,» their statement said. «It is not enough, and no time-served is long enough to justify paroling a man entirely lacking insight into his premeditated political assassination.»

They added that the pain of reliving the murder, in some part due to Sirhan’s repeated attempts at parole, «is simply unbearable.»

Sirhan, a Palestinian-born Christian from Jordan who opposed Kennedy’s support for Israel, was caught with a gun in his hand but has maintained for years that he doesn’t remember shooting the senator. He was initially sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to life in prison after California banned the death penalty.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, for the first time, did not oppose Sirhan’s latest attempt for freedom.

But Kennedy’s widow, Ethel Kennedy, and other family members argued against him being released.

«Bobby believed we should work to ‘tame the savageness of man and make gentle the life of the world.’ He wanted to end the war in Vietnam and bring people together to build a better, stronger country. More than anything, he wanted to be a good father and loving husband,” Ethel Kennedy said in September via a statement to NBC News.

“Our family and our country suffered an unspeakable loss due to the inhumanity of one man. We believe in the gentleness that spared his life, but in taming his act of violence, he should not have the opportunity to terrorize again,” she said, ending her statement with: «He should not be paroled.»

In a separate statement, Kennedy’s children urged the parole board staff, the full board and the governor “to reverse» the recommendation for parole.

Biden caught on hot mic calling Fox reporter ‘a stupid son of a bitch’

Published

on

Fox White House Correspondent Peter Doocy asked Biden, «Would you take a question on inflation … ? Do you think inflation is a political liability in the midterms?»

«It’s a great asset — more inflation,» Biden deadpanned. «What a stupid son of a bitch.»

Doocy said on Fox late Monday evening that Biden called his phone shortly after their exchange to apologize for his remark. «Within about an hour of that exchange, he called my cell phone and he said, ‘It’s nothing personal, pal,'» Doocy said.

«He cleared the air, and I appreciated it. We had a nice call,» he added. Doocy said he told Biden he plans to continue asking him unexpected questions, and that the President responded positively to the comment.

Doocy had said on Fox earlier Monday that he had asked Biden about inflation because the President, when asked about Russia and Ukraine, said he wouldn’t take any questions that were off-topic.

Doocy also said other reporters «had to tell me that he said it because I couldn’t hear anything over the shouting from (White House staff telling press to leave the room).»

The President has grown increasingly frustrated when facing tough questions publicly in recent days.

When another Fox White House correspondent, Jacqui Heinrich, asked Biden why he was waiting for Russian President Vladimir Putin to make the first move with Ukraine, he responded under his breath, «What a stupid question.»

Earlier Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters during a press briefing that «the President has shown that he respects the value of the freedom of the press.»

Psaki, who was being asked about 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s court case against The New York Times, said the President «obviously took a step earlier this year to ensure there couldn’t be a replication of actions that had been taken over prior administrations as it related to journalists. So I think that speaks to his commitment, but I don’t have any more comments on the case.»
Psaki appeared to be referring to the Biden Justice Department’s policy shift, vowing to no longer seize reporters’ records in leak investigations.

At the root of the frustrations toward the reporters are two major crises the Biden administration continues to deal with: addressing inflation and the prospect of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Just ahead of the President’s Monday meeting on lowering prices, Biden held a video conference with European leaders to discuss concerns over Russia’s troop build-up at Ukraine’s border.

Biden discussed options for bolstering US troop levels in the Baltics and Eastern Europe with his top military officials during a briefing at Camp David Saturday, according to a senior official. And earlier Monday, the Pentagon announced that as many as 8,500 US troops have been put on heightened alert for a possible deployment to Eastern Europe.
The State Department reduced staff levels at the US Embassy in Ukraine, ordering some family members to leave. And on Monday, the White House said American citizens inside Ukraine should leave now, and that there are no plans for a military evacuation should the situation deteriorate further.
Inflation continues to hound the administration as well — consumer prices rose in 2021 at the fastest pace in 39 years, a concerning marker the White House has attempted to address in the limited ways it can, including through events like the one held on Monday to lower prices.
During a news conference marking one year since taking office, Biden said, «We need to get inflation under control,» throwing weight behind the Federal Reserve’s efforts to combat inflation.

The administration’s inflation problem has already had political consequences.

In December, West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, a key moderate in the Senate, declined to support Biden’s sweeping social safety net and climate legislation, in part, over what the bill would do to the nation’s rising debt and soaring inflation.

This story has been updated with additional developments Monday.

CNN’s Aaron Pellish, Kaitlan Collins and DJ Judd contributed to this report.

Brady: Family will play big role in deciding future

Published

on

TAMPA, Fla. — Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady indicated Monday that family will play a substantial role in determining whether he will return to play next season. He also said that if this is it, he could walk away «proud and satisfied,» even though the Bucs lost 30-27 when they were eliminated in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday by the Los Angeles Rams.

«I think as I’ve gotten older, I think the best part is, is football is extremely important in my life, and it means a lot to me, and I care a lot about what we’re trying to accomplish as a team and I care a lot about my teammates,» Brady said on his «Let’s Go!» podcast with Jim Gray. «The biggest difference now that I’m older is I have kids now, too, you know, and I care about them a lot as well. They’ve been my biggest supporters. My wife is my biggest supporter. It pains her to see me get hit out there. And she deserves what she needs from me as a husband, and my kids deserve what they need from me as a dad.

«I’m gonna spend some time with them and give them what they need, ‘cause they’ve really been giving me what I need the last six months to do what I love to do. I said this a few years ago, it’s what relationships are all about. It’s not always what I want. It’s what we want as a family. And I’m gonna spend a lot of time with them and figure out in the future what’s next.»

Brady has three children. His oldest, Jack, is 14 years old and lives with his mother, actress Bridget Moynahan, in New York, and Brady sees him as much as he can. Brady’s son Benjamin, 12, and daughter Vivian, 9, live with him and his wife, supermodel and philanthropist Gisele Bundchen.

While Brady expressed disappointment in being eliminated from the postseason, he said it meant getting to eat waffles with his children Monday morning, something he cannot do in-season.

He said there is no rush to make a decision on his future, and coach Bruce Arians said Monday that no timetable has been set. The team expressed a strong desire for Brady to return but has encouraged him to take all the time he needs and will look at contingency plans in the event he decides not to come back.

Some have questioned how Brady could consider walking away after a loss. He has won seven Super Bowl rings, and owns a 243-73 record during the regular season and a 35-12 record in the postseason. And because of his competitiveness, he said, he felt he couldn’t take everything in Sunday, in the event it was his last game.

«I would say I’m proud and satisfied of everything we accomplished this year, so I know when I give it my all, that’s something to be proud of,» Brady said. «And I’ve literally given everything I had this year, last year, the year before that, the year before that. Like, I don’t leave anything half-ass, you know? I think I leave it with everything that I have. My physical being, I work really hard on that. I feel like I give everything I can to my teammates. Although, it is divided attention as you get older, ‘cause there’s different priorities and responsibilities in life. And, you know, I have things happening outside of football that require some time and energy.

«Every year I just have to make sure that I have the ability to commit to what the team really needs, and that’s really important to me. The team doesn’t deserve anything less than my best. And if I feel like I’m not committed to that, or I can’t play at a championship level, then you gotta give someone else a chance to play. And, you know, we’ll see. There’s a long time between now and the start of next football season. I’ve gotta really figure those things out, which is probably natural for anyone. And at the same time, I would say this, we never know what’s gonna happen in the future. We really don’t. I mean, Kobe Bryant, a friend of ours, God rest his soul. You think you’re gonna live forever. We’re not. We think we’re gonna play forever. We’re not. What can we do? We can enjoy the moments that we have.

«As challenging as the season was, I was glad I played and glad I participated, ‘cause I’m living my life and I’m not just counting the days. So my days are meaningful to me. I’m gonna try to keep ‘em meaningful to me. And, you know, in the meantime I’m gonna do as best I can to enjoy, you know, the time that I have not playing football. ‘Cause that’s equally important. Playing football I get so much joy from. I love it. But not playing football, there’s a lot of joy in that for me also now, too, with my kids getting older and seeing them develop and grow. So all these things need to be considered and they will be. And, you know, the funny part is always that most guys retire and then move to Florida. I’m already in Florida. So it’s really confusing, even to me.»

Brady also said he wouldn’t want a farewell tour with all the fanfare that accompanies it. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was acknowledged by fans and players as this past season wound down, even taking a final lap around Heinz Field. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he didn’t want one either, though many felt there was a strong possibility 2021 might have been his last season, at least with the Packers.

«I think that would be distracting for me. … My enjoyment comes from not a recognition of kind of what I’ve accomplished as a player in the league — my enjoyment comes from the competition,» Brady said. «More so than anything, even yesterday, I was thinking about competing. I was thinking about, this whole year, about competing. I wasn’t thinking about anything other than that.

«So when the time comes to think about post-career and second career, I’ll think about those things. It’s just when you’re 44, I guess you get asked about that a lot. And a lot of people thought I was done playing football in 2015. A lot of people in 2016 said, ‘You’re done.’ A lot of people in 2018, and when I left the Patriots, they said, ‘You’re done.'»

Instead, Brady signed with the Bucs in 2020, took them to the postseason for the first time in 13 years and led the franchise to its second Super Bowl 18 years after its first. The Bucs came up short this season, though, as Brady’s team failed to advance in the divisional round for just the fourth time in his career.

A cruise ship had an arrest warrant waiting in Miami. So it took passengers to the Bahamas

If the Crystal Symphony had continued course to Miami, it would have been seized by authorities. So it headed to Bimini instead, as USA Today first reported. The ship is still docked at the Bahama port, according to a cruise ship tracker.

The saga began Wednesday, when Peninsula Petroleum Far East filed a lawsuit in a South Florida federal court against Crystal Cruises, alleging it owed unpaid fuel bills totaling more than $4.6 million — of which $1.2 million is for Crystal Symphony specifically.

On Thursday, a US judge issued an arrest warrant ahead of the ship’s scheduled Saturday arrival in Miami, meaning the ship would be seized by a US Marshal and court-appointed custodian.

Crystal Cruises said about 300 passengers were transferred by ferry on Sunday from Bimini, Bahamas, to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In a statement to the Associated Press, a spokesperson said that the ferry ride to Fort Lauderdale was «uncomfortable due to inclement weather.»

«This end to the cruise was not the conclusion to our guests’ vacation we originally planned for,» the cruise line said in a statement.

The cruise ship can hold up to 848 guests, though the total number of passengers on the ship is unknown.

Also on Wednesday, the day the lawsuit was filed, Crystal Cruises announced it was suspending operations for its ocean voyages through late April and its river cruises through May.

«Suspending operations will provide Crystal’s management team with an opportunity to evaluate the current state of business and examine various options moving forward,» the cruise line said in a statement.

The company’s two cruises currently in operation — one heading to Aruba and one bound for Argentina — will complete their voyages. Guests who have booked future trips will receive a full refund.

«This was an extremely difficult decision but a prudent one given the current business environment and recent developments with our parent company, Genting Hong Kong,» said Jack Anderson, Crystal’s president.

Genting Hong Kong, which is one of Asia’s largest cruise operators, is about to enter liquidation as the pandemic has decimated the cruise industry worldwide.
