5 quotes from Cardinal Robert Sarah, a favorite among conservatives to succeed Pope Francis

Cardinal Robert Sarah – championed by conservatives as reflecting the doctrinaire and liturgically minded papacies of Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI – is among those being considered to replace Pope Francis.
An African cardinal from Guinea, Sarah, 79, is viewed as a spiritual and theological standard-bearer for conservative Catholics, as critics of Francis have argued the late pope was too heavily influenced by modern secularism.
Sarah previously headed the Vatican’s charity office Cor Unum and clashed with Francis on many occasions.
Their ideological divide most seriously came to a head when Sarah and Benedict – who retired as acting pope in 2013 – co-authored a book titled «From the Depths of Our Hearts: Priesthood, Celibacy and the Crisis of the Catholic Church.» The 2020 book advocated the «necessity» of continued celibacy for Latin Rite priests and came out as Francis was weighing whether to allow married priests in the Amazon to address a priest shortage there.

As a result, Francis dismissed Benedict’s secretary, Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, from his papal household job, and several months later retired Sarah after he turned 75. The prospect of a retired pope trying to influence a reigning one created the scenario that canon lawyers and theologians had warned of when Benedict decided to retain the white cassock of the papacy in retirement as «pope emeritus.» The scandal died down after Benedict removed himself as a co-author.
It’s actually Sarah’s 2019 book that’s causing more of a stir with conservative Christians in the wake of Francis’ passing.
Sarah has described «The Day Is Now Far Spent» as his most significant book. In it, the cardinal decries how Europe and Western civilization have turned away from Christianity and suffer from ideological challenges brought by mass migration.
By contrast, Francis had openly contradicted the Trump administration and Vice President JD Vance – a Catholic convert – over their crackdown on illegal immigration.
Vance, one of the last dignitaries to meet with Francis on Easter Sunday before his passing, has referenced Pope John Paul II – ideologically more similar to Sarah – in recent public addresses. At the Munich Security Conference, Vance praised John Paul II as «one of the most extraordinary champions of democracy» when emphasizing the importance of Western values. The vice president also celebrated John Paul II’s call for new evangelization at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.
Sarah co-authored two other books – «God or Nothing: A Conversation on Faith» in 2015 and The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise in 2017 – both with French journalist Nicolas Diat.
Here are some key quotes by Sarah being highlighted ahead of Francis’ funeral later this week. The papal conclave will convene in the coming weeks to choose a new leader of the Catholic Church.
1. The West cut itself off from its ‘Christian roots’
Sarah argued that the West has cut itself off from its Christian heritage in «The Day is Now Far Spent.»

«The West no longer knows who it is, because it no longer knows and does not want to know who made it, who established it, as it was and as it is. The West refuses to acknowledge its Christian roots.»
«By losing its faith, Europe has also lost its reason to be. It is experiencing a lethal decline and is becoming a new civilization, one that is cut off from its Christian roots.»

2. Gender ideology is ‘Luciferian’
Sarah argued that gender ideology is an affront to God’s creation and cannot fundamentally change whether a person is male or female in «The Day is Now Far Spent.»
«Gender ideology is a Luciferian refusal to receive a sexual nature from God.»
3. Called mass migration a ‘new form of slavery’
In a March 2019 interview with the French publication «Valeurs Actuelles,» Sarah reportedly criticized the role of the Catholic Church in supporting mass migration policies in Europe, noting the harm caused to the migrants themselves.
«All migrants who arrive in Europe are penniless, without work, without dignity,» Sarah reportedly said. «This is what the Church wants? The Church cannot cooperate with this new form of slavery that has become mass migration.»

4. Calls modern distractions ‘the devil’s tool’
In «The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise,» Sarah argues that modern distractions separate humankind from God.
«Distraction is the devil’s tool for cutting man off from God.»
5. Calls Christians to refuse loyalty to popularity or politics
In «God or Nothing: A Conversation on Faith,» Sarah asserts that one’s loyalty must be to Christ – rather than to popularity or politics – and repeatedly argues against moral relativism in family and societal norms.
«The Church is not a human organization. She is not subject to the fashions of the day or the winds of doctrine. She must be faithful to Christ.»
«God or nothing: there is no other choice. Those who choose God have everything. Those who choose nothing are lost.»

Hunter Biden moves to dismiss contempt motion saying he ‘ghosted’ daughter, calls child’s feelings irrelevant

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Hunter Biden said it is irrelevant that he suddenly «ghosted» his 7-year-old daughter, whom he shares with ex-stripper Lunden Robert, arguing in a new legal filing that he was never legally obligated to have a relationship with her.
His lawyer made the statement Tuesday in response to Roberts reopening a 2019 paternity suit in Arkansas, alleging that the 55-year-old former first son did not honor the obligations he agreed to in 2023 and should be held in contempt of court, as well as increase child support payments.
In a motion filed on Jan. 13, Roberts claimed that Biden’s indifference caused their daughter, Navy Joan Roberts, «emotional trauma,» and that he failed to deliver the artwork he had promised, which reportedly lost significant value after his father left office.
Biden’s legal team moved to dismiss the motion and all of Roberts’ demands, first arguing that the child’s feelings and relationship with Biden are «immaterial» since the court never required personal communication.

«Specifically, the averments regarding the Child’s emotional state, her relationship with Defendant, and their communications and bonding … are not relevant to contempt or modification of child support,» his lawyer Davis Langdon said.
The son of former President Joe Biden has five children, including three from ex-wife Kathleen Buhle and one with his current wife, Melissa Cohen.
Roberts previously noted that the child and Biden had shared a brief period of bonding, speaking several times during a series of scheduled calls until «suddenly and without warning or explanation, Mr. Biden ghosted (Navy),» and caused Navy to experience «emotional trauma,» according to the motion.
«This has caused issues for (Navy), who recently experienced emotional trauma at a family member’s wedding when she realized that her dad would not walk her down the aisle or dance with her at her own wedding reception,» she said.

Biden, a self-taught painter whose works have been valued in the six-figure range while his father was in office, also stated that no specific legal timeline was established for delivering his artwork.
«Even if no paintings had been given to the Child to date, such would not violate the Order, because as long as thirty paintings are assigned to the Child by Defendant will have complied with the Order,» Langdon wrote.
Biden’s lawyer added that Navy will be able to choose the paintings she wants by a specific, though undisclosed, deadline.

He added that he does not need to provide additional child support Robert is further seeking, despite her citing his recently improved «lavish lifestyle» and the disparity between Navy’s life and that of his other children, because she has not proven that his financial situation has in fact changed.
During the 2023 settlement, Roberts consented to reducing monthly child support payments from $20,000 to $5,000, according to the New York Post. The agreement also provided for some of the payments to be made with Biden’s paintings.

Biden’s legal team further added that Robert’s allegations over the years were all made «merely for the purpose of embarrassing Defendant and making a national spectacle of Defendant’s personal life.»

EU to list Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as terrorists; Germany warns of rapid action

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
The European Union (EU) moved Thursday to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organization, and Germany pledged to make the decision legally binding as soon as possible.
The move also came alongside a new round of EU sanctions targeting Iranian officials and entities amid the violent crackdown on protests and mass killings that have swept across the country since Dec. 28.
Tehran’s military support for Russia was also included in the measures.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the designation and the sanctions package Thursday.

«I welcome the political agreement on new sanctions against the murderous Iranian regime,» von der Leyen wrote in a post on X. «And on the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. This was long overdue.
«‘Terrorist’ is indeed how you call a regime that crushes its own people’s protests in blood. Europe stands with the people of Iran in their brave fight for freedom.»
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said the EU would move quickly to implement the designation, calling it a strong political signal that reflected the scale of repression inside Iran.
«The next step will be the rapid implementation towards a legally binding listing,» Wadephul warned, adding that the EU stood «side by side with the Iranian people» against repression.
Wadephul accused the IRGC and its auxiliary forces of meeting protesters with extreme violence, carrying out executions and having a destabilizing role across the Middle East.
As of Thursday, the Human Rights Activists News Agency reported 6,373 confirmed fatalities, with an additional 17,091 deaths under review.

The organization also cited continued communication restrictions, limited internet restoration and ongoing economic and social fallout, saying arrests and security pressure had entered what it described as a «post-crackdown phase.»
According to Reuters, EU foreign ministers also approved new human rights sanctions targeting Iranian «individuals and entities» linked to the suppression of protests.
Those sanctioned include Iran’s interior minister, senior IRGC commanders, police chiefs, judges from revolutionary courts and cyber officials involved in censorship and surveillance.
Some will also be sanctioned for «providing support» to Russia, Reuters noted.

The U.S. designated the IRGC a Foreign Terrorist Organization in April 2019. Canada followed in June 2024. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have also designated the IRGC a terrorist group.
Advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) welcomed the EU’s move and urged swift implementation, calling on the U.K. to follow suit.
«UANI applauds the EU for announcing its intention to designate the IRGC, the Islamic Republic’s ideological army, as the terrorists that they are,» the group said in a statement.
«We now urge the United Kingdom to proscribe the IRGC, following the lead of the EU, the United States, Canada, and Australia. The IRGC must be denied the ability to operate with impunity abroad.»

Reacting to the news, Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, criticized the EU’s designation.
«The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is one of the strongest and most effective anti-terrorism forces in the world; only those who stand on the side of the terrorists themselves could deny the IRGC’s record in the fight against ISIS terrorism,» he said in a post on X.
