‘Baby steps’: Leader Thune details his work to corral Republicans behind Trump’s legislative vision

FIRST ON FOX: Senate Majority Leader John Thune is weathering headwinds in his own conference over outstanding concerns in President Donald Trump’s «big, beautiful bill» that threaten to derail the legislation, but he’s taking it in stride and standing firm that the megabill will make it to the president’s desk by July 4.
«We have to hit it, and you know whether that means it’s the end of next week, or whether we roll into that Fourth of July week,» the South Dakota Republican told Fox News Digital during an interview from his leadership suite.
«But if we have to go into that week, we will,» he continued. «I think it’s that important. And you know what I’ve seen around here, at least in the past, my experience, if there’s no deadline, things tend to drag on endlessly.»

Senate Republicans have been working on their version of Trump’s mammoth bill, which includes priorities to make his 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent, sweeping changes to healthcare, Biden-era energy credits and deep spending cuts, among others, since the beginning of June.
Now that each portion of the bill has been released, Thune is eyeing having the bill on the floor by the middle of next week. But, he still has to wrangle disparate factions within the Senate GOP to get on board with the bill.
«It is a work in progress,» Thune said. «It’s, you know, sometimes it’s kind of incremental baby steps.»
A cohort of fiscal hawks, led by Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., are unhappy with the level of spending cuts in the bill. Some Senate Republicans want to achieve at least $2 trillion in spending cuts over the next decade, but Johnson has remained firm in his belief that the bill should go deeper and return to pre-COVID-19 pandemic spending levels.
Others, including Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, are upset with tweaks to Medicaid, and the impact those changes could have on rural hospitals and working people on the healthcare program’s benefit rolls.

Thune has to strike a precarious balancing act to sate the concerns of his conference, given that he can only afford to lose three votes. It’s a reality he acknowledged and described as trying to find «the sweet spot» where he can advance the bill back to the House.
He’s been meeting with the factions individually, communicating with the White House and working to «make sure everybody’s rolling in the same direction.»
«Everybody has different views about how to do that, but in the end, it’s cobbling together the necessary 51 votes, so we’re working with anybody who is offering feedback,» he said.
Collins and others are working on the side to create a provider relief fund that could offer a salve to the lingering issues about the crackdown on the Medicaid provider rate tax in the bill.
The Senate Finance Committee went further than the House’s freeze of the provider tax rate, or the amount that state Medicaid programs pay to healthcare providers on behalf of Medicaid beneficiaries, for non-Affordable Care Act expansion states, and included a provision that lowers the rate in expansion states annually until it hits 3.5%.
«We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that, for example, rural hospitals have some additional assistance to sort of smooth that transition,» Thune said.

Thune, who is a member of the Finance panel, noted that «we all agree that the provider tax has been gamed» and «abused» by blue states like New York and California, and argued that the changes were done to help «right the ship» in the program.
«I think that’s why the sort of off-ramp, soft-landing approach [from] the Finance committee makes sense, but these are substantial changes,» he said. «But on the other hand, if we don’t start doing some things to reform and strengthen these programs, these programs aren’t going to be around forever, because we’re not going to be able to afford them.»
The Senate’s product won’t be the end of the reconciliation process, however. The changes in the bill will have to be green-lit by the House, and one change in particular to the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap already has a cohort of blue state House Republicans furious and threatening to kill the bill.
The Senate’s bill, for now, left the cap unchanged at $10,000 from the policy ushered in by Trump’s first-term tax cuts, a figure that Senate Republicans view as a placeholder while negotiations continue.
Indeed, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., is working with members of the SALT caucus in the House to find a compromise on the cap. But the appetite to keep the House-passed $40,000 cap isn’t strong in the Senate.
«The passion in the Senate is as strong as it is in the House against changing the current policy and law in a way that… favors high-tax states to the detriment and disadvantage of low tax states,» he said. «And so it’s the emotion that you see in the House side on that particular issue is matched in the Senate in a different direction.»
Meanwhile, as negotiations continue behind the scenes on ways to address issues among Senate Republicans, the Senate Parliamentarian is currently chunking through each section of the greater «big, beautiful bill.»
The parliamentarian’s role is to determine whether policies within each section of the bill comport with the Byrd Rule, which is the arcane set of parameters that govern the budget reconciliation process.
Thune has made clear that he would not overrule that parliamentarian on Trump’s megabill, and re-upped that position once more. The reconciliation process gives either party in power the opportunity to pass legislation on party lines and skirt the Senate filibuster, but it has to adhere to the Byrd Rule’s requirements that policy deals with spending and revenue.

However, he countered that Senate Republicans planned to take a page from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., when Democrats rammed former President Joe Biden’s agenda through Congress.
«The Democrats with the [Inflation Reduction Act] and [American Rescue Plan Act], for that matter, they dramatically expanded the scope of reconciliation and what’s eligible for consideration,» he said.
«So, we’ve used that template, and we’re pushing as hard as we can to make sure that it allows us to accomplish our agenda, or at least as much of our agenda as possible, and fit within the parameters of what’s allowed,» he continued.

El Ministerio Público de San Pablo acusó formalmente a las gemelas Roberta Cristina Veloso Fernandes y Ana Paula Veloso Fernandes de ser “asesinas seriales”. Ambas están presas por una serie de envenenamientos cometidos entre enero y mayo en los estados de San Pablo y Río de Janeiro.
Los fiscales sostienen que Roberta “instigó” y “alentó” a Ana Paula a cometer los crímenes, llegando incluso a participar en la planificación de los ataques.

“Estamos ante otra ‘serial killer’”, escribieron los fiscales Rodrigo Merli Antunes y Vania Caceres Stefanoni en la denuncia contra Roberta. “Demuestra ser una asesina en serie, igual que su hermana”, apuntaron.
Cómo operaban las gemelas: veneno y móviles económicos
Las investigaciones revelaron que las hermanas usaban veneno en bebidas y alimentos para eliminar a sus víctimas, casi siempre por motivos económicos. Un informe pericial confirmó la presencia de insecticida en los frascos encontrados en la vivienda de Ana Paula, en Guarulhos, en la región metropolitana de San Pablo.

Según la causa, Ana Paula también “sentía placer al matar”. Además, no actuó sola: Michelle Paiva da Silva, de 43 años e hija de una de las víctimas, está acusada de haber pagado 4 mil reales a las gemelas para que envenenaran y mataran a su propio padre, de 65 años.
Ana Paula fue detenida en julio, Roberta en agosto y Michelle en octubre. El Ministerio Público pidió que la prisión de Roberta pase de temporaria a preventiva y que pague 80 mil reales como reparación mínima a las familias de las cuatro víctimas. Quiénes son las víctimas de las gemelas
- Marcelo Hari Fonseca: dueño de la casa que alquilaba Ana Paula en Guarulhos. Murió el 31 de enero tras comer un sándwich que posiblemente estaba envenenado. Tras su muerte, la estudiante universitaria comenzó a exigir a la familia del hombre que le permitiera permanecer en la residencia. La mujer afirmó tener una relación romántica con él, lo cual es falso, según la policía.
- Maria Aparecida Rodrigues: conoció a Ana Paula a través de una app de citas. Luego fue a la casa de la estudiante, donde comió una torta presuntamente envenenada. Regresó a su casa en Guarulhos, se sintió mal y murió el 11 de abril.
- Neil Corrêa da Silva: padre de Michelle, amigo de Ana Paula y excompañero de la universidad. Según la policía, su hija pagó a la asesina en serie R$4.000 para viajar a Duque de Caxias, Río de Janeiro, donde vivía el hombre de 65 años. La mujer le puso veneno en sus porotos. El hombre murió el 26 de abril.
- Hayder Mhazres: un joven tunecino de 21 años que conoció Ana Paula a través de una aplicación de citas. Según la policía, tras iniciar una relación con ella, quiso terminarla, lo que llevó a la estudiante a matarlo. La mujer le habría servido un licuado envenenado. Tras su muerte, la familia de la víctima declaró que Ana Paula afirmó estar embarazada de su hijo y les había pedido dinero. Según la investigación, mintió sobre el embarazo.
En un interrogatorio grabado, Ana Paula admitió haber matado animales con veneno. Según el diario Estadao, la estudiante también habría matado a 14 perros para probar la eficacia del veneno.
Si se confirman las muertes, la sospechosa también podría ser acusada de crueldad animal.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that the U.S. military has carried out another strike in the Eastern Pacific targeting alleged terrorists he says were engaged in narco-trafficking.
Three suspected narco-terrorists were killed, according to Hegseth. The strikes were ordered at the direction of President Donald Trump.
Hegseth said the Pentagon conducted «yet another lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization (DTO). Yet again, the now-deceased terrorists were engaged in narco-trafficking in the Eastern Pacific.»

«The vessel was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and was carrying narcotics,» he continued. «Three male narco-terrorists were aboard the vessel during the strike, which was conducted in international waters. All three terrorists were killed and no U.S. forces were harmed in this strike.»
This is the ninth vessel strike since September and the second strike reported in the Eastern Pacific. A total of 37 have reportedly been killed while two survived and were later repatriated to their home countries.

«These strikes will continue, day after day,» Hegseth said on Wednesday. «These are not simply drug runners—these are narco-terrorists bringing death and destruction to our cities. These DTOs are the ‘Al Qaeda’ of our hemisphere and will not escape justice. We will find them and kill them, until the threat to the American people is extinguished.»
The Pentagon has refused to release the identities of those killed or evidence of drugs on board.
The Trump administration has been scrutinized in recent weeks over the strikes, including by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who raised concerns about killing people without due process and the possibility of killing innocent people.

In a recent interview, Paul cited Coast Guard statistics that show a significant percentage of boats boarded for suspicion of drug trafficking are innocent.
The senator has also argued that if the administration plans to engage in a war with Venezuela, as it has targeted boats in recent weeks it claims are transporting drugs for the Venezuela-linked Tren de Aragua gang, it must seek a declaration of war from Congress.

El Festival de Cine de Mar del Plata anunció su programación con el estreno en inglés de Pablo Trapero y el debut como director de Diego Peretti
La edición número 40 del Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar del Plata , que se celebrará del 6 al 16 de noviembre, presentó el listado completo de competencias y jurados para su programación 2025.
La sección Competencia Internacional congregará a una amplia variedad de producciones provenientes de múltiples países. Por Argentina participarán La casa, de Gustavo Triviño, y Muña Muña, de Paula Morel Kristof. Entre los representantes internacionales se encuentran Leo & Lou, de Carlos Solano por España, La gioia, de Nicolangelo Gelormini por Italia, y The Sea, de Shai Carmelli-Pollak, que representará a Israel y ha sido seleccionada como su candidata para los premios Oscar.
También competirán Calle Málaga, de Maryam Touzan por Marruecos, Oca de Karla Badillo por México, 18 Holes to Paradiso, de Joao Nuno Pinto, por Portugal, la nueva película de Pablo Trapero titulada & Sons, por Reino Unido, Ungrateful Beings, de Olmo Omerzu por República Checa, Flood, de Martin Gonda por Eslovaquia, y Vache Folle, de Hugo Diego García y Lorenzo Ventivoglio, por Suiza.
El jurado para la Competencia Internacional estará integrado por el periodista Juan Carlos Arciniegas, de Colombia, el productor Paul Zaentz, de Estados Unidos, el director Juan Baldana, de Argentina, la directora de festival Helher Escribano, y la actriz Nashla Bogaert.
En la Competencia Latinoamericana se destacó la inclusión de La muerte de un comediante, ópera prima como codirector de Diego Peretti, junto al documental 3000 kilómetros en bicicleta, de Iván Vescovo, ambos por Argentina. Desde México participarán Dreams, de Michel Franco, y La vida es, de Lorena Villarreal. Otras producciones representativas son Rey del ring, de Rodrigo Sepúlveda, por Chile, Cordillera de fuego, de Jayro Bustamante, por Guatemala, Perros, de Gerardo Minutti, por Uruguay, Night Shift, de Filipe Matzembacher, y Marcio Reolon, por Brasil, El corazón del lobo, de Francisco J. Lombardi, por Perú, Extranjera, de Michelle Malley Campos, por Puerto Rico, Malecón, de Carlos Larrazabal, por Cuba, y Espina, de Daniel Poler, por Panamá. El jurado estará compuesto por la directora Gabriela Tagliavini, la productora María Gowland y el sonidista Víctor Tendler.
En la Competencia Argentina, Risa y la cabina del viento, de Juan Cabral suma la participación de Diego Peretti y el debut cinematográfico de Cazzu. El hombre de la luna, de Rodrigo Pérez Green incluye en su elenco a Rodrigo de la Serna y su hermano Manuel. Además, The Letter, de Rodrigo H. Vila presenta un elenco internacional encabezado por Harvey Keitel y Britt Robertson.
Sobresalen también Pensamiento lateral, de Mariano Hueter, protagonizada por Itziar Ituño, y Desbarrancada, de Guadalupe Yepes. Entre los documentales seleccionados figuran Criollos, de Matías Tamborenea, Recen por mí: la historia de Francisco, de Facundo Bartucci y Vlasta, el recuerdo no es eterno, de Candela Vey y Tino Pereira. El jurado está integrado por el periodista Carlos Morelli, el director Alberto Gieco y la directora de arte Coca Oderigo.
La Competencia En Tránsito está conformada por seis películas, entre ellas Fan de Mariela di Naro y Olivera & Corman: Hollywood en Argentina, de José Tripodero y Martin Capaldi. El jurado encargado está compuesto por la periodista Catalina Dlugi, la productora Ana Aizemberg y el director de arte Federico Mayol.
Por primera vez, el festival organizará una Competencia Internacional de Cortometrajes, que tendrá propuestas de España (Sexo a los 70, Every Light in Between), Austria (The Cycle of Life, junto a Alemania en The Swimsuit), China (Ayi, We Will Follow the Wind), Israel (In Another Day) e India (Moti). El jurado estará conformado por Larry Laboe, el periodista Pablo de Vita y la directora Claudia Pino Saravia.
Entre los cortometrajes latinoamericanos en competencia se listan Presépio, por Brasil, Entre tormentas, por Puerto Rico, Época de plagas, por Ecuador, Domingo familiar y Hasta pronto, por México, y Kusi sonríe, por Perú. Los mismos jurados designados para la competencia latinoamericana de largometrajes evaluarán estos títulos.
La Competencia Argentina de Cortos seleccionó obras como Testarossa, de Ignacio Sesma, Mientras tanto, de Flor Berthold y Carla Scatarelli, Gymbro, de Estefanía Maisterra y Tomás Canepa, y El borde de las cosas, de Justo Dell Acqua Árbol. El jurado encargado será el mismo asignado a la competencia nacional de largometrajes.
El festival, uno de los eventos culturales más relevantes de la agenda local, abrirá el 6 de noviembre con la proyección de El beso de la mujer araña, dirigida por Bill Condon, quien asistirá junto al protagonista Tonatiuh. En el acto inaugural, la actriz y cantante Marilina Ross recibirá uno de los Astor de Plata a la Trayectoria.
