Death toll in Burma, Thailand earthquake rises to more than 1,600 victims
The death toll from the devastating earthquake that rocked Burma and Thailand on Friday has risen sharply to more than 1,650 victims.
The earthquake’s epicenter was in central Burma, where 1,644 have been confirmed dead with nearly 140 people still missing, the nation’s ruling military said Saturday.
The 7.7 magnitude quake knocked down scores of buildings as well as destroyed bridges and highways in what was the deadliest natural disaster to hit the impoverished, war-torn country in years. Burma is also known as Myanmar.
Survivors in Mandalay, Burma’s second-biggest city, dug with their bare hands on Friday in desperate attempts to save those still trapped, lacking heavy machinery and with authorities absent. Burma’s military rulers let in hundreds of foreign rescue personnel on Saturday.

AMERICA’S MOST EXPENSIVE NATURAL DISASTERS IN RECENT DECADES
The quake struck during Friday prayers across the country, causing the collapse of at least 50 mosques across the country, killing nearly 300 people, the Yangon Khit Thit News Agency reported.
An initial assessment by Burma’s opposition National Unity Government said at least 2,900 buildings, 30 roads and seven bridges had been damaged by the quake.
The quake comes amid a raging civil war that has wrecked the economy and displaced millions. It makes movement around the country both difficult and dangerous, complicating relief efforts and raising fears that the death toll could still rise precipitously.

Airports too have been damaged, further hindering rescue efforts. For instance, satellite photos from Planet Labs PBC show the earthquake toppled the air traffic control tower at Naypyitaw International Airport as if sheered from its base, according to The Associated Press.
The country sits on the Sagaing Fault, a major north-south fault that separates the India plate and the Sunda plate.

President Donald Trump said the earthquake was «terrible» on Friday and assured that the United States would assist in relief efforts.
«It’s a real bad one, and we will be helping. We’ve already spoken with the country,» Trump said.
In neighboring Thailand, where the quake shook buildings and brought down a skyscraper under construction in the capital Bangkok, at least ten people were killed.
Dramatic footage captured in Bangkok midday Friday showed a 33-story apartment building that was under construction falling down, scattering dust and debris throughout the city’s streets. Bangkok city authorities said earlier Friday that 10 people were killed, 16 were injured.
Water from a separate high-rise building with rooftop pools in Bangkok spilled over the side as they shook and debris fell from many buildings.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said the country has now «returned to normalcy.»
Aftershocks were reportedly felt in India and China.

Photos and video from Burma showed two hard-hit cities with extensive damage.
In Mandalay, Burma’s second-largest city and close to the epicenter, the earthquake damaged part of the former royal palace and buildings, according to videos and photos released on Facebook social media.
In the Sagaing region just southwest of Mandalay, a 90-year-old bridge collapsed, and some sections of the highway connecting Mandalay and the city of Yangon were also damaged.
In the capital Naypyitaw, the quake damaged religious shrines, sending parts toppling to the ground and some homes.

Durante años, el perfil de TikTok de un hombre llamado José Jurado Montilla mostraba escenas aparentemente inofensivas: viajes en varios puntos de España, caminatas por el campo y reflexiones sobre la vida en general. Tenía miles de seguidores y se presentaba a sí mismo como un “aventurero” que recorría el país sin rumbo fijo.
La atención sobre él se multiplicó cuando contó en uno de sus videos que “una amiga” había desaparecido de manera misteriosa y que había decidido investigar por su cuenta para encontrarla y ayudar a la familia.

En cada publicación, Jurado Montilla daba actualizaciones de su búsqueda y mostraba los lugares en los que había estado junto a Ester Estepa, una mujer de 42 años a quien se le perdió el rastro a mediados de agosto de 2023, en la ciudad de Gandía, en la provincia de Valencia.
Sin embargo, la percepción de su comunidad digital cambió cuando salió a la luz que “Dinamita” Montilla, como lo apodaban, era un asesino en serie conocido por la policía desde hacía décadas.
Una muerte violenta
El 29 de agosto de 2022, un joven de 21 años, identificado como David H., fue encontrado muerto en una zona rural conocida como Los Cientos, en los Montes de Málaga.

La fiscalía reconstruyó que el agresor entabló una breve conversación con el joven y luego lo siguió hasta un lugar apartado. Allí sacó una escopeta y le disparó dos veces a corta distancia. Cuando David cayó al piso, remató el ataque con un balazo en la cabeza.
El asesinato conmocionó a la comunidad local, pero el caso resultó difícil de resolver ya que ocurrió en un área rural, sin cámaras ni testigos.
La única pista que tenían los investigadores surgió de un mensaje de WhatsApp que el joven había enviado poco antes de morir. En él mencionaba que le había dado agua a un hombre “con muy mala pinta”.
La desaparición de Ester Estepa
Mientras avanzaba la investigación por el asesinato del joven, otro caso comenzó a hacer ruido en España. Se trataba de la desaparición de Ester Estepa, una mujer de 42 años que había sido vista por última vez el 23 de agosto de 2023 en la ciudad valenciana de Gandía.
Estepa había estado viajando por distintas localidades de la costa mediterránea cuando conoció a José Jurado Montilla. Según reconstruyeron luego los investigadores, ambos coincidieron en un albergue y comenzaron a recorrer juntos varios puntos de la región. Durante algunos días caminaron por pueblos cercanos al mar, durmieron en alojamientos económicos y se movieron principalmente a pie.
El 21 de agosto llegaron a Gandía y, al día siguiente, Estepa acudió a un centro de salud porque tenía fuertes dolores en las piernas después de varios días de caminata. Allí fue atendida y fue una de las últimas veces que se la vio con vida.
En los días posteriores, su madre comenzó a recibir mensajes desde el celular de Estepa en los que aseguraba que estaba pasando un mal momento y que pensaba irse a vivir a Buenos Aires con amigas. Ante la falta de contacto directo y la creciente preocupación, sus familiares denunciaron la desaparición el 26 de agosto. Durante meses no hubo pistas claras sobre lo que había ocurrido y la desesperación crecía día tras día.
La incertidumbre se prolongó hasta junio de 2024, cuando unos senderistas encontraron restos humanos en un cañaveral cercano a la carretera N-332, también en Gandía.
Las pruebas de ADN confirmaron lo que la familia temía: el cuerpo pertenecía a Ester Estepa y presentaba signos de abuso sexual. A partir de ese momento, el caso pasó a investigarse como un homicidio y la figura de José Jurado Montilla comenzó a ocupar el centro de la investigación.

La pista que lo cambió todo y un historial criminal
Antes del hallazgo de los restos de Ester Estepa, los peritos que trabajaron en el caso de David H. encontraron un rastro biológico en el cierre de la mochila de la víctima y realizaron comparaciones genéticas en bases de datos policiales.
El resultado fue contundente: el perfil coincidía con el de José Jurado Montilla, un hombre que ya figuraba en los registros por una serie de asesinatos cometidos en los años 80.

Paradójicamente, la pista que permitió ubicarlo surgió de su propia actividad en sus redes sociales. Para ese momento, sus seguidores ya habían alertado que se trataba de un criminal y se lo cuestionaban una y otra vez en los comentarios.
Montilla publicaba con frecuencia videos en TikTok en los que mostraba los lugares que visitaba durante sus viajes. En uno de esos clips apareció dentro de un bar en Valdebótoa, una pequeña localidad ubicada en la provincia de Badajoz.
El operativo se llevó a cabo el 4 de mayo de 2024. Los investigadores revisaron el video, identificaron el local y se trasladaron hasta el lugar. Cuando los agentes llegaron, Montilla todavía estaba ahí y fue detenido sin oponer resistencia.
“Dinamita” Montilla es originario de la provincia de Málaga, en el sur de España. Su historial criminal comenzó a mediados de la década de 1980, cuando una serie de asesinatos conmocionó la región.
Entre 1985 y 1987 fue el autor de cuatro homicidios cometidos en distintos puntos de la provincia. Dos de las víctimas eran turistas -uno inglés y otro alemán- que acampaban en la zona de El Chorro cuando fueron atacados con disparos y armas blancas. Otro de los asesinatos fue el de Antonio Paniagua, un hombre que apareció semicalcinado en una casa de Campo en la localidad de Campanillas. La cuarta víctima fue un hombre de Málaga que lo conocía previamente.
Jurado Montilla fue detenido en 1987 y tras el juicio, fue condenado a 123 años de prisión por la totalidad de los crímenes.
Sin embargo, el sistema penitenciario español establecía límites al tiempo efectivo de cumplimiento de condena. Jurado Montilla terminó pasando 28 años en la cárcel y recuperó la libertad en 2013, después de que una sentencia europea anulara la conocida “doctrina Parot”, que prolongaba el tiempo de prisión para criminales con múltiples delitos.

José Jurado Montilla continúa detenido en Málaga bajo prisión preventiva, mientras espera los juicios de las causas judiciales en su contra.
Por su parte, la Fiscalía de Málaga ya solicitó una condena de 26 años de cárcel por el homicidio de David H.

In the all-caps post on Monday morning, the president said in the last two days the U.S. and Iran had engaged in discussions about resolving the conflict. He said the talks would continue during the week and that he had ordered the War Department to postpone attacks against energy infrastructure in Iran for five days.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry denied that it is engaging in discussions with America, according to state media, indicating there was «no dialogue» with Tehran and D.C., the Wall Street Journal has reported.
«Yes, there are initiatives from regional countries to reduce tensions, and our response to all of them is clear: we are not the party that started this war, and all these requests should be referred to Washington,» the ministry indicated, according to state broadcaster IRIB, the Journal reported.

Ignored ICE detainers ‘put lives at risk,’ DHS says, targeting Newsom, Pritzker, Healey

As congressional Democrats continue to vote to defund the Department of Homeland Security, the agency is calling out the «dangerous derangement» of sanctuary state leaders who it says are «putting American lives at risk» by releasing illegal immigrant pedophiles, murderers and gang members.
A spokesperson for DHS slammed Democratic governors Gavin Newsom of California and JB Pritzker of Illinois, both rumored 2028 Democratic presidential candidates, and also Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey.
«Governor Newsom and his fellow sanctuary politicians—including Pritzker and Healey—are releasing murderers, pedophiles, and drug traffickers back into our neighborhoods and putting American lives at risk,» the spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
The spokesperson cited statistics showing that seven out of 10 of the safest cities in the U.S. cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They issued a personal appeal to the Democratic governors, saying, «If we work together, we can make America safe again.»

«Criminal illegal aliens should not be released from jails back onto our streets to terrorize more innocent Americans,» the spokesperson continued, adding that the agency is «calling on sanctuary politicians to stop this dangerous derangement and commit to honoring ICE arrest detainers.»
Most of the 10 safest cities on U.S. News & World Report’s list are located either in states or counties that have laws directing municipal authorities to cooperate or coordinate directly with federal immigration enforcement. That cooperation often occurs through 287(g) agreements, which allow local law enforcement agencies to work directly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The cities also share other traits, such as high median incomes and a lack of mixed-use zoning or transient rental housing, underscoring the ongoing debate over whether immigration enforcement cooperation plays a meaningful role in public safety.
According to the DHS, there are over 33,000 criminal illegal aliens in California’s custody.
The spokesperson cited several illegal immigrants with criminal records arrested by ICE in the last year who were released in California despite ICE detainers, including child predators and gang members.
One of these individuals, Hector Grijalba-Sernas, from Mexico, was previously arrested for lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old. DHS said that despite ICE lodging a detainer against Grijalba-Sernas, he was released last year. He is currently in federal custody.
Another, Xujin An, from China, who was arrested for sexual penetration with force and sexual battery in Westminster, California, was arrested by ICE after its detainer was not honored, according to DHS. An is currently in ICE custody pending judicial proceedings.

A third, Angel Navarro Camarillo, who DHS said is a member of the La Familia street gang, was arrested by ICE following an arrest by local authorities for a sex offender violation. Likewise, the detainer against Navarro Camarillo was not honored, according to DHS. He has since been removed from the United States.
Carmelo Corado Hurtado, from Guatemala, was arrested by ICE following an unheeded detainer request and his conviction of first-degree murder, driving under the influence and second-degree robbery. ICE removed Corado Hurtado from the U.S. last year.
In Illinois, DHS said that ICE arrested illegal immigrant Jose Manuel Fuentes-Vargas, from Mexico, after its detainer against him was not honored and following his conviction of sexual assault of a victim less than 13 years of age. Fuentes-Vargas is currently in ICE custody.
Another, Leonardo Ignot-Osto, a Mexican national who illegally entered the U.S. at least four times and was convicted of child abduction of a victim less than 17 years old, was arrested by ICE last year after its detainer was not honored. He was removed from the U.S.
A third, Jaime Mandujano-Nunez, from Mexico, was arrested by ICE late last year after he was released by authorities on an unknown date following his conviction of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. He has also since been removed from the U.S.

This comes amid mass outrage over the killing of Loyola University Chicago student Sheridan Gorman, allegedly by an illegal immigrant, Venezuelan national Jose Medina-Medina.

According to DHS, Medina-Medina, 25, entered the U.S. during the Biden administration and had been previously arrested for shoplifting in Chicago, marking a prior criminal incident before the alleged murder.
On Sunday, the Chicago Police Department formally charged Medina-Medina with murder in the shooting of Gorman. In a statement, the department said Medina-Medina was currently facing six felony charges, including a count of first-degree murder.
A spokesperson for Pritzker’s office told Fox News Digital, «Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and Loyola University community grieving the senseless murder of Sheridan Gorman.»
Pritzker’s spokesperson said that «violent crime has no place in our streets, and we expect the alleged perpetrator to be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.»
They added that the Trump administration «needs to stop politicizing heinous tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like reinstating federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts.»
