Descubren en Australia un nuevo estilo de arte rupestre que estuvo oculto durante 6.000 años
En la recóndita península de Kimberley, situada al noroeste de Australia, un reciente descubrimiento arqueológico ha transformado el entendimiento del arte rupestre aborigen. Liderado por Ana Paula Motta y en colaboración con la Balanggarra Aboriginal Corporation, el equipo de investigación ha identificado un nuevo estilo pictórico al que han denominado Figuras naturalistas lineales (LNF). Este estilo tiene una antigüedad que supera los 6.000 años, revelando aspectos inéditos sobre la evolución cultural y artística de las comunidades aborígenes australianas.

A lo largo de una década de intensa labor en el marco del proyecto Kimberley Visions, la investigación liderada por Ana Paula Motta ha revolucionado el panorama del arte rupestre en Australia. El equipo ha documentado 98 motivos del estilo Figuras naturalistas lineales (LNF), dispersos en 22 abrigos rocosos de la región conocida como Balanggarra Country, situada a lo largo de los ríos Drysdale y King George.
Este descubrimiento no solo amplía el repertorio del arte rupestre australiano, sino que también completa la cronología estilística de la región. El equipo utilizó una sofisticada combinación de técnicas de análisis, incluyendo el registro fotogramétrico, calcos digitales y análisis estadístico, abarcando 151 sitios previamente catalogados. Esta metodología permitió identificar grandes figuras animales delineadas que hasta ahora no encajaban en ningún estilo reconocido.
El estilo LNF se caracteriza por una expresiva coherencia formal y una distribución limitada, encontrándose solo en el 2-3% de los enclaves de arte rupestre en Balanggarra Country, aunque un 77% de los sitios poseen algún tipo de pintura. Estas figuras se encuentran generalmente en muros verticales visibles, a menudo sobre repisas elevadas, sugiriendo un propósito comunitario.
El estilo Figuras naturalistas lineales (LNF) se distingue por la representación de animales de gran tamaño, sobresaliendo las imágenes de macrópodos, como canguros y ualabíes. Además, incluye murciélagos frugívoros, peces, reptiles y aves. Las figuras, que superan los 80 centímetros en longitud, se caracterizan por exhibir un perfil estático con un contorno continuo y seguro, empleando ocres rojos oscuros.
A diferencia de otros estilos, las LNF apenas presentan relleno cromático, contrastando con el relleno granulado que caracteriza al periodo IIAP (Irregular Infill Animal Period).
La ausencia de figuras humanas y escenas colectivas refuerza la singularidad de este estilo. Los animales están representados con anatomía simplificada, mostrando extremidades firmes, colas rectas y orejas redondeadas. Algunos ejemplares cuentan con tramados lineales internos que sugieren detalles musculares. Los investigadores han identificado cinco tipologías corporales exclusivas del estilo LNF, llamadas U, AJ, AN, AQ y AR, que indican un código iconográfico propio.
Australian Archaeology destaca que la utilización deliberada de contornos nítidos y la falta de detallado relleno conferían a estas siluetas una cualidad “viva”, susceptible de reactivarse mediante repintados y rituales ceremoniales. Este enfoque subraya la intención artística de crear imágenes que no solo representen, sino que también interactúen simbólicamente con la comunidad aborigen.
El reciente descubrimiento del estilo Figuras naturalistas lineales (LNF) proporciona un eslabón crucial en la secuencia cronológica del arte rupestre en la región de Kimberley. Hasta ahora, esta secuencia incluía los estilos Gwion, que datan de entre 12.000 y 13.000 años, el IIAP y Static Polychrome, y las figuras Wanjina, de hasta 5.000 años de antigüedad.
Las observaciones de superposiciones en los abrigos rocosos han sido esenciales para determinar la antigüedad del estilo LNF. En todos los casos documentados, estas figuras fueron pintadas sobre animales de estilo IIAP, antropomorfos Gwion y figuras Static Polychrome, y posteriormente cubiertas por motivos Wanjina.
Un sitio significativo es KGR 343, donde un macrópodo del estilo LNF, que mide casi dos metros de longitud, está trazado sobre un canguro del estilo IIAP y siete figuras Gwion, mientras que una figura Wanjina lo recubre parcialmente. Basándose en las dataciones existentes, el horizonte Wanjina comenzó hace unos 5.000 años, lo que sitúa a las LNF en el Holoceno medio-tardío, con una antigüedad estimada por encima de los 6.000 años.

El surgimiento del estilo LNF coincide con un periodo de intensos cambios ambientales y sociales. Tras la última glaciación, la subida del nivel del mar redujo considerablemente las tierras habitables en la región de Kimberley, generando tensiones ecológicas y territoriales. Además, la introducción de nuevas tecnologías líticas transformó las dinámicas de las comunidades aborígenes.
En este contexto, el resurgimiento de figuras faunísticas en el arte rupestre podría interpretarse como una reafirmación de los lazos totémicos y de parentesco extendido entre humanos y animales. Los autores del estudio sostienen que las LNF expresan la ascendencia común y las relaciones de cuidado mutuo entre las personas y los seres del entorno. La representación monumental de animales mediante líneas puras habría servido para reactualizar estos vínculos en momentos de crisis, a través de ceremonias y repintados.
La interpretación de las Figuras naturalistas lineales (LNF) trasciende su valor meramente artístico, revelando una rica visión cultural donde la identidad humana se entrelaza con la de los animales y el entorno natural. Según los investigadores, las pinturas servían a propósitos sociales y ceremoniales, reforzando lazos totémicos y facilitando la transmisión de conocimientos sobre la fauna local.
La característica “viva” de estas figuras, destacada en el estudio de Australian Archaeology, sugiere la posibilidad de que fueran objeto de repintados y rituales periódicos. Esta práctica no solo reforzaba su significado cultural, sino que también mantenía su relevancia a través del tiempo, permitiendo a las comunidades aborígenes adaptar simbólicamente las imágenes a los constantes desafíos ambientales y sociales que enfrentaban.

ICJ President Yuji Iwasawa said the Jewish state «is under the obligation to agree to and facilitate relief schemes provided by the United Nations and its entities, including UNRWA.»

Eugene Kontorovich, a professor and director of the Center for International Law in the Middle East at George Mason University Scalia Law School, told Fox News Digital,»The opinion is, most importantly, not a decision of case, or possessing any legal authority whatsoever.»
He warned the ruling is also dangerous to U.S. interests. «The ICJ claims it has ‘moral authority,’ but it must be high on its own supply. The Court concluded that UNRWA is a neutral, legitimate aid agency despite its members having participated in Hamas’s Oct. 7 invasion, and the broad infiltration of its facilities and organization by Hamas, which the U.S. government has acknowledged. It makes up new legal rules from scratch. It is a real danger to the U.S., which has also been repeatedly on the losing end of Advisory Opinions by the politicized Court.»

Kontorovich, who is senior research fellow for the Heritage Foundation, added, «Based on this opinion, the ICJ could conclude that the U.S. must continue to work with U.N. organizations it wishes to quit or boycott – or provide aid to terror groups working to kill Americans. The U.S. should quit any treaty giving the ICJ jurisdiction – and recall its judge on the court.»

Israel’s Foreign Ministry wrote on X Israel that it «categorically rejects the ICJ’s ‘advisory opinion,’ which was entirely predictable from the outset regarding UNRWA. This is yet another political attempt to impose political measures against Israel under the guise of ‘International Law.’ Today’s ICJ advisory opinion should have called out the terrorist activity that UNRWA has been involved in: UNRWA employees directly took part in the October 7th massacre and continue to assist Hamas’s terrorist operations – all under the auspices of the United Nations.»
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged Israel to comply with the ICJ ruling. In response to the Israeli U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon terming the ICJ ruling a «shameful decision,» a spokesperson for Guterres told reporters, «We are counting on the Government of Israel to abide by its legal obligations. I’m not going to respond to the rhetoric by this or that official.»
Anne Bayefsky, Director of the Touro Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust, told Fox News Digital, «The ICJ – pompously called the ‘World Court’ – is a creature of the United Nations, an institution riddled with antisemitism and bias against the Jewish state.»

A pilots association jumped into the government shutdown fray Wednesday, calling on U.S. lawmakers to pass a «clean continuing resolution» and reopen the government, citing the mounting strain the shutdown has placed on airport employees.
«Our air traffic controllers and the broader air traffic system are already operating under immense pressure — a government shutdown only compounds that stress and threatens the efficiency of our skies as we see the impact of reduced controller availability at facilities across the country,» Jody Reven, president of the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association, wrote in a Wednesday statement.
«Likewise, TSA professionals continue to show up every day to safeguard the traveling public, even without pay. These men and women deserve our full support and the certainty of a paycheck,» he continued.
The government shutdown has persisted since Oct. 1, when Senate lawmakers failed to reach a funding agreement before a midnight deadline. The Trump administration and Republicans have since pinned blame for the shutdown on Democrats, claiming they sought taxpayer-funded medical benefits for illegal immigrants.

Democrats, however, have denied the claims and pinned blame for the shutdown on their Republican colleagues.
The shutdown has led to delays at massive travel hubs such as Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas and Newark, New Jersey, as air traffic controllers — who are employed by the Federal Aviation Administration — suffer staffing shortages.
Reven’s statement comes as travelers gear up for holiday flights for Thanksgiving and Christmas, with a White House official telling Fox News Digital that as the shutdown continues, it «threatens to ruin the holidays.» The 2025 holiday season is expected to break travel records as Americans book trips at a higher pace than 2024, travel forecasters reported in October.
«There is no reason the Democrat shutdown should have ever happened, let alone last this long,» the official said. «But the longer it goes on, the more it threatens to ruin the holidays, not only for the Americans missing paychecks but also for every American that travels during the holidays.»
The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association’s press release specifically called on lawmakers to pass a budget as the nation’s entire National Airspace System depends on it.

When approached for comment on the statement, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers demanded Democrats «stop causing chaos.»
«Democrats say that every day of the shut down gets better and that they want to use suffering families as leverage to achieve their radical left-wing agenda — but the people they’re using as ‘leverage’ disagree,» Rogers said. «From pilots to flight attendants and air traffic controllers, their message is simple: the Democrats need to stop causing chaos and end the shutdown.»
The Air Line Pilots Association, the world’s largest airline pilot union, also called on lawmakers to reopen the government earlier in October.
«The job of keeping aviation safe and secure is tough on an easy day, but forcing them to do it without pay undermines the safety and security of our entire system,» Jason Ambrosi, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, said in a statement Oct. 15. «We are at a critical moment in aviation safety, and we need our leaders to be focused on the necessary infrastructure and staffing improvements.»
