Estados Unidos responsabilizó al régimen de Daniel Ortega por la desaparición del médico Yerri Estrada en Nicaragua
Las autoridades de Estados Unidos denunciaron este miércoles la desaparición del médico Yerri Estrada, de 30 años y con nacionalidad costarricense-nicaragüense, detenido en Nicaragua hace más de tres semanas. Según la Oficina de Asuntos para el Hemisferio Occidental del Departamento de Estado estadounidense, el hecho ocurrió después de que el profesional fuera arrestado y torturado por fuerzas gubernamentales, quienes lo habrían hecho desaparecer luego de prestar servicios de salud en una comunidad local. La oficina apuntó directamente como responsables a los copresidentes y esposos Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo, señalando el caso como una “desaparición forzada”.
La desaparición fue informada por primera vez ante el plenario del Congreso de Costa Rica por la diputada izquierdista Priscilla Vindas la semana pasada. Durante su intervención, Vindas subrayó que la represión en Nicaragua afecta no solo a la población nicaragüense, sino también a personas con nacionalidad costarricense, haciendo referencia al caso de Estrada.
El Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos, a través de su cuenta de X, destacó que el “delito” de Estrada había sido defender la libertad en manifestaciones cívicas pacíficas. El mensaje exhortó al régimen de Ortega y Murillo a demostrar que Estrada se encuentra con vida. “¿Está Murillo tan insegura de sí misma que no puede proporcionar evidencias de que esté vivo?”, publicó la instancia oficial estadounidense. Estas declaraciones llegan en el contexto de una creciente presión internacional sobre la dictadura sandinista por violaciones a los derechos humanos.
La desaparición del médico se produce poco después de la muerte de dos opositores presos en Nicaragua, fallecimientos que exiliados políticos y defensores de derechos humanos han atribuido al inicio de una “nueva era represiva” por la anticipada transición de poder de Ortega, aquejado de problemas de salud, a su esposa Murillo. En los últimos meses, Ortega ha aparecido en actos públicos con dificultades para caminar y un aspecto visiblemente pálido, según ha informado el diario nicaragüense La Prensa, que se edita en el exilio. El mandatario, de 79 años y ex guerrillero, padece lupus e insuficiencia renal, lo que ha incrementado especulaciones sobre una inminente sucesión en el poder.
Rosa Ruiz, madre del médico desaparecido, publicó el martes un video en su perfil de Facebook donde suplicó por la liberación de su hijo. Ruiz relató entre lágrimas que llevaba 21 días sin noticias sobre el paradero de Estrada desde que fuera reportado como detenido el pasado 13 de agosto. En su mensaje, la madre pidió “una intervención divina y ayuda internacional” para lograr la liberación del joven médico. “Mamá necesita que seas fuerte como ella”, le expresó Ruiz a su hijo en el video, recordando además enseñanzas familiares de recurrir a la oración en situaciones de dificultad y manifestando su esperanza de recibir pronto noticias sobre él.
En su petición dirigida a las autoridades y organismos internacionales, Ruiz rogó por apoyo a Costa Rica, a la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU), la Unión Europea, la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) y la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH). Pidió que se exija al régimen nicaragüense una prueba de vida de su hijo y la liberación de todos los detenidos en lo que denominó “tenebrosas cárceles” de Nicaragua. La situación se enmarca en los llamados de familiares de otros disidentes bajo custodia en el país, que en la última semana han lanzado un SOS global tras la muerte bajo custodia de los opositores Mauricio Alonso y Carlos Cárdenas Zepeda. Los activistas han comparado sus muertes con los asesinatos perpetrados por la extinta Guardia Nacional durante la dictadura de Anastasio Somoza Debayle.
El Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Costa Rica comunicó que su consulado en Managua se encuentra en contacto con la madre del médico y con las autoridades nicaragüenses, aunque evitó divulgar detalles alegando motivos de confidencialidad. En tanto, el régimen nicaragüense no se ha pronunciado públicamente sobre la desaparición del médico ni sobre las reiteradas exigencias de organismos internacionales para que garantice la seguridad de sus opositores detenidos.
Nicaragua atraviesa una crisis política y social desde abril de 2018, marcada por la represión de las manifestaciones opositoras. El régimen de Ortega ha sido acusado reiteradamente de persecución contra la disidencia, especialmente después de las protestas de 2018, que Managua consideró un intento de golpe de Estado impulsado por Estados Unidos y que, según la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU), dejaron más de 300 muertos. Ortega, en el poder de manera continua desde 2007 y electo en 2021 para un quinto mandato consecutivo, ha gobernado junto a Rosario Murillo bajo señalamientos de haber instaurado una “dictadura familiar”. Las elecciones de 2021 se realizaron con sus principales contendientes presos, quienes posteriormente fueron expulsados del país y despojados de su nacionalidad y derechos políticos tras ser acusados de “golpistas” y “traición a la patria”.

The Ukrainian leader, who has been pleading with the international community to do more to counter Russian President Vladimir Putin amid his more than three-and-a-half-year-long war, once again cautioned that Ukraine may have been the first European nation to bear Moscow’s affront to international order, but it will not be the last.
«Putin will keep driving the war forward wider and deeper. And we told you before, Ukraine is only the first. And now Russian drones are already flying across Europe,» Zelenskyy said. «Russian operations are already spreading across countries, and Putin wants to continue this war by expanding it.

«No one can feel safe right now,» he added.
A general tone of dissatisfaction with the effectiveness of the rules-based system has repeatedly rung out during the UNGA as world leaders condemned a growing disregard of international law and human rights amid rising security threats and geopolitical conflicts.
Zelenskyy again argued it is cheaper to stop Putin now than attempt to catch up in an arms race, build underground bunkers across cities and under kindergartens, and to try and «protect every port and every ship from terrorists with sea drones.»
«Stopping Russia now is cheaper than wondering who will be the first to create a simple drone carrying a nuclear warhead,» he said.

But it wasn’t only the international community’s failure to stop Putin that Zelenskyy addressed.
He pointed to the Israeli hostages who are still held in Gaza and the horrific conditions Palestinians live in.
«There is simply no other way left [that] nations can speak about the pain from stages like this,» Zelenskyy said. «But even during bloodshed, there isn’t a single international institution that can truly stop it. That’s how weak these institutions have become.
«What can Sudan or Somalia or Palestine or any other people living through war really expect from the UN or the global system? Just statements,» he said.

NJ governor’s race escalates as GOP contender threatens legal action amid Dem leak claims

New Jersey Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli said Democrats are trying to distract voters from Democrat nominee Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s involvement in the 1994 U.S. Naval Academy cheating scandal by pointing the finger at the Trump administration for a National Archives breach that unsealed her entire military record.
While Democrats railed against the Trump administration following the National Archives data breach, Republicans have raised questions about a New Jersey Globe report revealing Sherrill was barred from walking at her U.S. Naval Academy class graduation for refusing to report classmates involved in a massive cheating scandal.
«This is an illegal and dangerous weaponization of the federal government,» Sherrill said in a statement Thursday as she criticized Ciattarelli and the Trump administration for «breaking the law and exposing private records for political gain.»
But the Ciattarelli campaign told Fox News Digital that documents detailing Sherrill’s involvement in the cheating scandal were not included in the National Archives breach and that Sherrill implicated herself in the cheating scandal when she confirmed the New Jersey Globe’s report.

The Ciattarelli campaign said Nicholas De Gregorio, a friend who is not directly involved in the campaign, «submitted a lawful FOIA request» about Sherrill’s military background of his own accord.
A spokesperson for the National Archives and Records Administration said the technician who responded to De Gregorio’s request about Sherrill’s military record «should NOT have released the entire record,» which included private information like her Social Security number.
The Ciattarelli campaign is refusing to destroy those documents that were inadvertently sent to De Gregorio and later shared with the campaign.
The National Archives apologized for the breach of privacy and has committed to holding their staff accountable for the blunder.

While investigating Sherrill’s suspected involvement in the 1994 cheating scandal, Ciattarelli’s campaign also submitted its own FOIA request, which confirmed her name was not on the U.S. Naval Academy graduation program that year.
«I didn’t turn in some of my classmates, so I didn’t walk but graduated and was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy, serving for nearly ten years with the highest level of distinction and honor,» Sherrill told The Globe when confronted with the commencement program, as she defended not releasing any disciplinary records from her time at the academy.

«Contrary to your client’s baseless claims, no one leaked anything to the campaign to try to smear [Sherrill],» a lawyer representing the Ciattarelli campaign said in the letter. «Had they done so, we would not be waiting for her to release the records of her involvement in the cheating scandal at the United States Naval Academy that resulted in her being barred from walking at her graduation.»
The letter sent to Sherrill’s lawyers said that any claim that Ciattarelli for Governor (CFG) was «part of a conspiracy to smear [Sherrill] with ill-gotten documents is completely false. In fact, it is defamatory and if [Sherrill] and her campaign continue to push this false narrative and allege that CFG and/or [campaign strategist Chris] Russell acted illegally, we will pursue defamation claims.»
Sherrill’s campaign did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the letter.
Democrats, however, were quick to blame the data breach on President Donald Trump.
«The Trump administration’s breach of privacy is a slap in the face to our nation’s brave servicemembers. It’s shameful,» former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, Virginia’s Democratic gubernatorial nominee, said Thursday.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has condemned the Trump administration for what they claimed was a «decision» to release the documents, despite a National Archives official confirming it was a low-level St. Louis branch employee responsible for «failing to follow proper administrative procedures.»
«The Trump administration’s decision to release her unredacted military personnel files to her opponent’s campaign, including her Social Security number, is yet another example of Donald Trump and the Republicans illegally weaponizing the federal government for political purposes,» DNC Chair Ken Martin said, while calling the breach a «shameful scandal that shows how little Donald Trump and Jack Ciattarelli think of the American military.»

House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries said he would «support a criminal investigation into the unauthorized and illegal release of Mikie Sherrill’s records.»
California Rep. Robert Garcia, ranking member on the House Oversight Committee, and House Democrats from New Jersey’s congressional delegation have also called for a formal investigation.
«This illegal doxxing of Mikie Sherrill is yet another case of the blatant corruption all too common in this s— show of an administration,» DNC vice chair and Pennsylvania state Rep. Malcom Kenyatta said on X.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., accused Trump of «illegally releasing veterans’ personal records from government files for partisan reasons.»
Navy combat veteran Rep. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., agreed the administration is «corrupt and incompetent.»
«The Trump administration has ILLEGALLY released the private military records,» Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., who is widely considered to harbor presidential aspirations and has emerged as one of Trump’s staunchest critics, charged.

Sherrill campaign communications director Sean Higgins on Thursday accused the Trump administration of «targeting political opponents with an absolute disregard for the law, this time in concert with the Ciattarelli campaign.»
The White House did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request to comment on the Democrat’s accusations.
