Ex-Israeli official offers bold 2-pronged strategy as ‘the only way’ to free hostages from Hamas

A former Israeli official has offered a two-pronged strategy as «the only way» to free the remaining hostages captured by Hamas terrorists during the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks.
«Today, in my estimation, Israel must declare that it is no longer willing to negotiate as it has been. Then, it must do two things simultaneously,» Yossi Amrusi, a former senior Shin Bet official, told Israeli outlet Maariv, a sister publication to The Jerusalem Post.
«First, push as much as it can for separating Gazans from Hamas through designated humanitarian zones,» he said. «That will also lead to control over humanitarian aid, so that it doesn’t reach Hamas. And second, since it is estimated that hostage locations are known – we must conduct local negotiations with those holding the hostages. Offer money and their lives in exchange for the hostages.»
Amrusi argued that Hamas benefits from the prolonged negotiations and questioned whether anyone remaining in Gaza has the authority to make decisions.

«A clever Persian trader once told me in the market: ‘You’ll win the deal when you’re willing to lose it.’ And why? For several reasons,» he reportedly said. «One, Hamas benefits from dragging things out. It continues to hold the key to its survival, and in the meantime, who knows what could happen? European pressure, a false starvation campaign, Trump might flip on Israel, internal pressure on the government. All of these, and each on its own, are good for them.»
He also voiced skepticism about Qatar’s effectiveness as a negotiating party.
«I’m not sure that Qatar, the mediator, even has the ability to decide anything. And it’s not even certain they have communication with Hamas’s internal leadership for consultations and decision-making,» Amrusi said. «It’s important to ask: is there anyone in Hamas’ Gaza who can make decisions? Who has control over those holding the hostages? Do they even know where they are, and what condition they’re in? After all, some of the hostages aren’t even in their hands.»
«I’ve always said Hamas will release the hostages when we force them to release them,» he continued, «but we don’t know how to do that. Military pressure isn’t being applied to its full extent, and our soldiers’ hands are pretty tied. We’re bringing in humanitarian aid that gives Hamas life – oxygen, fuel, and money.»

«Government constraints and fears are holding back the opening of immigration offices and the establishment of humanitarian zones. We simply don’t know how to win,» Amrusi added.
The U.S. and Israel pulled their negotiating teams from Doha, Qatar, on Thursday.
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said Friday that the decision came after Hamas’ latest response «clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.»

«While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,» Witkoff wrote on X. «We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza. It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way. We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza.»
In a statement released by his office, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed Witkoff, saying, «Hamas is the obstacle to a hostage release deal.»
«Together with our U.S. allies, we are now considering alternative options to bring our hostages home, end Hamas’s terror rule, and secure lasting peace for Israel and our region,» he said.
Egypt and Qatar, which are mediating the talks alongside the United States, said the pause was only temporary and that talks would resume, though they did not say when.

Meeting with President Donald Trump at his golf course in Scotland on Monday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer came determined to press the U.S. to take a larger role in helping quell what he called a «desperate situation» amid increasing reports of starvation in Gaza as the Israel-Hamas war rages.
Trump at first lamented that the U.S. had not gotten enough credit for previously providing food aid. He shifted his tone when reporters questioned him about images of emaciated children from Gaza.
When asked if he agreed with Netanyahu’s recent remarks about concerns of mass starvation in Gaza being overstated, he replied, «I don’t know. I mean, based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry.»
Starmer added, «I think people in Britain are revolted at seeing what they are seeing on their screens.»
Trump said Israel «has a lot of responsibility» for what’s happening but is hampered by what its actions might mean for the prospects of Israeli hostages Hamas has been holding since it attacked Israel in 2023.
«I think Israel can do a lot,» Trump said, adding of Netanyahu, «I want him to make sure they get the food.»

Israel, meanwhile, has maintained that it is doing what it can to get humanitarian aid to Gazans. The country’s foreign ministry shared a video on Tuesday of what it says is Hamas «violently looting» aid, keeping it from civilians.
The foreign ministry also called out major media outlets for sharing an image of an emaciated Palestinian child, implying that the boy’s condition is the result of starvation. Israel identified the boy as Osama al-Raqab, who suffers from cystic fibrosis. The ministry said Israel enabled him to go to Italy for treatment, while the media used his appearance to demonize the Jewish state.
«This is what a modern blood libel looks like,» the ministry said.

Trump anunció que su primera pregunta a Xi Jinping en su próximo encuentro la próxima semana se centrará precisamente en el fentanilo, por el cual su administración ha impuesto aranceles a Beijing.
Hasta ahora, Estados Unidos ha llevado a cabo operaciones marítimas contra supuestas embarcaciones de narcotraficantes en aguas internacionales.
En tanto, al menos un bombardero B-1B estadounidense sobrevoló el mar Caribe frente a la costa de Venezuela, según datos de seguimiento de vuelos. Se trata de la segunda demostración de fuerza de aeronaves militares estadounidenses en una semana.
El vuelo del bombardero —que el presidente Trump posteriormente afirmó falsamente que nunca ocurrió— se produce mientras Washington continúa una campaña militar contra presuntos narcotraficantes en la región, desplegando fuerzas que han suscitado temores en Caracas de que el objetivo final sea un cambio de régimen.
Datos del sitio web de seguimiento Flightradar24 mostraron un B-1B volando hacia la costa venezolana el miércoles por la tarde antes de revertir su rumbo y dirigirse al norte, tras lo cual desapareció de la vista.

Esto llevó a una dura reacción desde Bogotá. El presidente colombiano Gustavo Petro acusó a Estados Unidos de cometer «ejecuciones extrajudiciales» como parte de sus operaciones militares en el Caribe y en el Pacífico para frenar el narcotráfico en estas rutas.
«Este tipo de maniobras violan el derecho internacional y constituyen ejecuciones extrajudiciales, ya sean traficantes o desconocidos», declaró Petro en rueda de prensa. «En ambos casos, esto representa un uso desproporcionado de la fuerza, prohibido por el derecho internacional humanitario», añadió.
El presidente Nicolás Maduro reveló que Venezuela cuenta con 5.000 misiles tierra-aire portátiles rusos para contrarrestar el despliegue de las fuerzas estadounidenses en el Caribe.
Washington ha desplegado aviones de combate furtivos y buques de la Armada en el Caribe como parte de lo que denomina esfuerzos antinarcóticos, y ha destruido al menos ocho embarcaciones que, según afirma, contrabandeaban drogas desde Venezuela hacia Estados Unidos
El ministro de Defensa de Venezuela dijo que cualquier operación de la CIA contra su país «fracasará», luego que Trump autorizara operaciones de inteligencia contra objetivos del chavismo.
Estados Unidos desplegó en el Caribe una flotilla de destructores, un submarino y barcos con fuerzas especiales para operaciones militares que llevaron al bombardeo de lanchas «narcoterroristas» procedentes de Venezuela.
Venezuela asegura no obstante que se trata de un plan para derrocar al presidente Nicolás Maduro. Trump autorizó la semana pasada las operaciones encubiertas.
«Sabemos que la CIA está presente no solamente en Venezuela, sino en todas partes del mundo», dijo el ministro Vladimir Padrino. «Podrán meter no sé cuantos cuerpos adscritos a la CIA en operaciones encubiertas desde cualquier flanco de la nación y cualquier intento fracasará».
Padrino supervisó una nueva ronda de ejercicios militares en estados costeros de Venezuela.

Grassley releases memo showing DOJ ‘unleashed unchecked government power’ on Trump associates

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, on Thursday released an April 2022 Justice Department memo showing then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, then-Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, and then-FBI Director Christopher Wray personally approved an FBI investigation into alleged efforts by Trump campaign associates to obstruct Congress’ certification of the 2020 election.
Grassley posted the four-page memorandum on X, saying it proves top Biden administration officials «personally approved» the case — which he referred to as «Arctic Frost» — and that it «unleashed unchecked government power at the highest levels.»
The Iowa Republican added, «My oversight will continue.»
The April 2022 memo, signed by Garland, Monaco, and Wray, authorized the FBI’s Washington Field Office to open what the bureau designated a «Sensitive Investigative Matter.» The document details the FBI’s request to examine whether individuals connected to Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign conspired to obstruct Congress’ certification of the Electoral College on Jan. 6, 2021.

«Because this investigation involves a SIM as set forth in the Department of Justice memorandum dated February 5, 2020, entitled ‘Additional Requirements for Opening of Certain Sensitive Investigations’ (DOJ Memo), your authorization is required before WFO may initiate this full investigation,» the document continued.
Monaco wrote at the bottom of the document, «Merrick- I recommend you approve,» before initialing and dating it 4/5/22. Garland ultimately signed off on the investigation on the same day.

The authorization came more than a year after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and months before now-former Special Counsel Jack Smith was appointed to oversee related investigations. The memo appears to document an early stage of the Justice Department’s examination of the so-called «fake electors» effort that became a focus of Smith’s probe.
In 2023, Smith subpoenaed phone records belonging to eight Republican senators and one House member, covering a four-day period — Jan. 4 to Jan. 7, 2021 — to examine call activity around the Capitol riot. The subpoenas did not seek call content but instead listed numbers, dates and durations.
The targeted senators included Republican Sens. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Josh Hawley of Missouri and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

In addition to the eight senators, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, told Fox News’ Sean Hannity Tuesday that he recently discovered Smith also attempted to subpoena his toll records but that his phone company, AT&T, did not hand them over.
Smith said the records were narrowly tailored and «entirely proper,» adding they were meant to support his investigation into Trump’s alleged efforts to subvert the 2020 election results.

His lawyers wrote to Grassley, saying the subpoenas complied with Justice Department policy and were routine.
Republicans have broadly claimed they were inappropriately spied on and compared Arctic Frost to the Watergate scandal. Smith’s lawyers emphasized the normalcy of seeking phone records and said public officials are not immune from investigation.

Smith’s attorneys also disputed accusations from FBI Director Kash Patel that the subpoenas were hidden, noting the requests were referenced in a footnote of Smith’s final report and shared with Trump’s defense team in discovery.

Nuevas imágenes del robo del Louvre: así huyeron los ladrones con el botín millonario en un montacargas
Francia sigue en shock tras el impactante robo en el museo del Louvre, ocurrido el domingo por la mañana. Un grupo de ladrones, vestidos como trabajadores y con la cara cubierta, se llevó ocho objetos valuados en más de 100 millones de dólares pertenecientes a la colección de Napoleón y de los antiguos reyes franceses.
Las nuevas imágenes de las cámaras de seguridad muestran cómo dos de los delincuentes descendieron por la fachada sur del museo, a orillas del Sena, usando un montacargas. Uno de ellos llevaba puesto un chaleco amarillo, simulando ser un operario. En cuestión de segundos, ambos bajaron de la grúa, se subieron a una moto —presuntamente una T-Max— y desaparecieron del lugar.

Un golpe relámpago en plena apertura del museo
El robo se produjo minutos después de las 9.30 de la mañana, justo cuando el Louvre abría sus puertas al público. En los videos se observa cómo, mientras los primeros visitantes ingresaban a la Galería de Apolo —una de las salas más espectaculares del museo, donde se exhiben las joyas reales y los diamantes de la corona—, los ladrones actuaban a sus espaldas.
Uno de los delincuentes, oculto detrás de una vitrina y vestido con el chaleco amarillo, utilizó una amoladora angular para romper el cristal blindado. Así, lograron sustraer las piezas y salir sin levantar sospechas.

El Louvre reconoció que faltan cámaras de seguridad tras el robo
La directora del Louvre, Laurence des Cars, aseguró el miércoles que las alarmas del museo funcionaron durante el espectacular robo de joyas, pero admitió que el sistema de videovigilancia en el exterior es “muy insuficiente”, en su comparecencia ante una comisión en el Senado.
“Hay algunas cámaras perimetrales, pero están obsoletas […] Es muy insuficiente y no cubre claramente todas las fachadas del Louvre. Desgraciadamente, en el lado de la galería de Apolo, la única cámara instalada está orientada hacia el oeste”, y por lo tanto, no cubría el balcón por donde accedieron los ladrones, añadió, en sus primeras declaraciones públicas desde el hurto.
La responsable, que en 2021 se convirtió en la primera mujer en dirigir la pinacoteca, también pidió que se instalara “una comisaría de policía” dentro del establecimiento y sugirió otras medidas “a corto plazo” como “la seguridad de las inmediaciones del Louvre, especialmente en la calzada».
Este robo es “una inmensa herida que nos han infligido”, dijo Des Cars, que presentó su renuncia al gobierno, aunque fue rechazada.
“Una supuesta mudanza”
La investigación “avanza”, aseguró el ministro del Interior, Laurent Nuñez, quien precisó que “más de un centenar de investigadores” están movilizados.

La fiscal también precisó que el servicio de conservación del Louvre estimó los daños en 88 millones de euros (102 millones de dólares), una suma “extremadamente espectacular” pero que “no es en absoluto paralela ni comparable a los daños históricos”, lamentó.
Los ladrones “no ganarán” ese monto “si tienen la pésima idea de fundir esas joyas”, advirtió.
