French-drafted UNIFIL resolution could shield Hezbollah as US stays silent

FIRST ON FOX — The U.S. may allow a controversial draft United Nations Security Council resolution to pass that some critics say would help Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror organization.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon’s (UNIFIL) mandate is up for renewal at the end of August, and the French-authored text would buy the mission another year while also not giving a firm termination date, according to a draft obtained by Fox News Digital. However, it states that the ultimate goal is to have «the Lebanese government [be] the sole provider of security in southern Lebanon» as long as it «fully controls all Lebanese territory.»

While applauding the end of hostilities, it also takes aim at Israel for its moves against Hezbollah terrorists operating across its border, noting in the draft that it, «Welcomes the cessation of hostilities arrangement between Israel and Lebanon of 26 November 2024 (S/2024/870), as a critical step towards full implementation of Resolution 1701, while noting with grave concerns the continuous violations of this arrangement, notably air and drone strikes on Lebanese territory, and requests the parties to faithfully implement its provisions, with the support of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in line with their respective mandates.»
The draft also urges Israel to withdraw from its five remaining positions inside Lebanon, which Israel maintains are meant to counter Hezbollah. Israel would also be encouraged to take part in «diplomatic efforts» to delineate a border between itself and Lebanon. If the resolution were to pass in its current form, Lebanon would be responsible for manning the posts with the help of UNIFIL.
As part of its goal of clearing southern Lebanon of unauthorized armed personnel — primarily Hezbollah operatives — the resolution encourages the international community to back the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) so it can ensure the absence of armed factions between the Blue Line and the Litani River.
Following the Second Lebanon War in 2006, the U.N. Security Council passed Resolution 1701, which outlined that UNIFIL and LAF would work to block Hezbollah’s activity in southern Lebanon. However, this has not been the case and critics fear that French draft would only bolster a system that has already failed.

DECISION DAY APPROACHES FOR TRUMP ADMIN ON CONTROVERSIAL UN FORCE THAT FAILED TO DISARM HEZBOLLAH
A senior policy analyst for the Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) has voiced concern about renewing UNIFIL’s mandate and called on the U.S. to veto it.
«UNIFIL has proven, over the course of decades, its failure to achieve any semblance of its stated purpose. UNIFIL was created in 1978, during the chaotic Lebanese Civil War, to try to stabilize Lebanon and prevent broader spillover,» Yoni Tobin pointed out in an op-ed originally published by the Algemeiner. He also noted that UNIFIL has not acted against Hezbollah’s building up its arsenal despite being given the green light to do so.
In the years since the resolution’s passing, the terror organization has been active, with Israel uncovering networks of tunnels similar to those used by Hamas. Additionally, Hezbollah quickly joined in Hamas’ war against Israel after the Oct. 7 massacre.

UNIFIL IGNORED HEZBOLLAH TERROR BUILDUP FOR 18 YEARS, ISRAEL’S UN AMBASSADOR SAYS
«Among countless failures by the United Nations in the Middle East, UNIFIL may be the most spectacular. Tasked with ensuring that Hezbollah would not rearm after the 2006 war, it patiently watched as Hezbollah became the largest non-state terrorist and military organization in the world,» the former U.S. Ambassador during the first Trump administration, David Friedman, told Fox News Digital in June. «Stability in Lebanon — within reach only now that Israel has decapitated Hezbollah’s leadership — will not be achieved through UNIFIL.»
In October 2024, Fox News Digital reported that UNIFIL had failed to prevent Hezbollah’s rapid rocket and weapons buildup since the mandate was implemented in 2006.
Pro-Hezbollah officials and soldiers within Lebanon’s Army also remain a core problem, according to experts and media reports. In late January, a LAF chief reportedly sent a classified document to Hezbollah. The LAF‘s Suhil Bahij Gharb, who oversees military intelligence for southern Lebanon, secured the confidential material from a military facility run by the U.S., France and UNIFIL.

It remains unclear how the U.S. will vote on the resolution or whether it will seek revisions to the French-authored text.
The U.S. mission declined to comment, while the U.N. missions of Israel and France did not respond to Fox News Digital requests.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — As Republicans aim to hold their fragile House and Senate majorities in the 2026 midterm elections, they’ve got an ally in the politically potent and deep-pocketed fiscally conservative group Club for Growth.
Framing the midterms, Club for Growth President David McIntosh emphasized in an exclusive Fox News Digital interview on the sidelines of the group’s annual economic conference «what’s at stake» in the midterms.
«It’s the difference between all the great progress, the jobs, the good economy, turning America around,» that McIntosh said President Donald Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill have accomplished over the past year, «versus letting the socialists back in, they’ll shut it all down.»
For a quarter-century, the club has been one of the biggest backers of Republican candidates and causes, as it pushes its pro-growth and limited-government conservative agenda.
SENATE REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN CHIEF REMAINS OPTIMISTIC DESPITE ROUGHER MIDTERM CLIMATE

McIntosh, in a presentation to major donors to the group, highlighted that the club spent more than $160 million in the GOP primaries and general election during the 2024 election cycle, «and won nearly 80%» of its races.
In 2026, the group aims to raise and spend $175 million in the midterms, and says it’s already brought in $65 million from donors.
The club plans to spend $75 million on Senate races, $55 million on House showdowns, $20 million in ballot box battles for governors, and $20 million — mostly already spent — on issue advocacy in support of Trump’s tax cuts, school choice efforts and the push for congressional redistricting.

«I think the House is the most vulnerable,» McIntosh said as he pointed to the GOP’s fragile 218–214 majority.
«So we’ve already started raising money for the general. I’ve got a House fund, an ambitious goal of $40 million to help our guys win,» he added as he spotlighted a fund for vulnerable House Republican incumbents.
As the party in power, Republicans are facing traditional political headwinds which usually result in the loss of congressional seats in the midterms. And Democrats are energized, thanks to a slew of ballot box victories and overperformances in off-year and special elections in the 14 months since Trump returned to the White House, as they stay laser focused on affordability amid persistent inflation.
But the GOP also is dealing with a low propensity midterms issue that it didn’t have to worry about before Trump upended the political order: MAGA voters who don’t always go to the polls when Trump’s name isn’t on the ballot.
«We’ve got to get the folks who voted for President Trump,» McIntosh said. «They don’t necessarily come out in the midterms. We have to share with them what’s at stake.»
«We’re going to work with President Trump on that so they know he wants them to vote,» he said. «He wants them to come out. He needs them so he can keep going.»

McIntosh said the Club will highlight that «Republicans have a plan that will help make things more affordable. It will keep cutting taxes. They will see the benefits.»
«But the bigger message is going to be, you can’t let the Democrats back in, because they’ll shut everything down,» he claimed. «It’ll be back to the Biden days, high inflation, higher taxes, fewer jobs. That’s what’s at stake, and our job is to tell the voters, we need you to vote because it makes all the difference.»
The economy, and specifically inflation, was a key issue that boosted Trump and Republicans to sweeping victories in 2024. But affordability boosted Democrats at the ballot box in 2025 and so far in 2026.

And with oil and gas prices surging since the start of the U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran a week and a half ago, Republicans face more potential political headaches.
But McIntosh predicted that «by the end of the year, we’re going to be back to a robust economy because the Trump tax cuts are going to kick in. People will keep more of their money. There’s a huge incentive for companies to build factories back here in America again, and that will kick in. People will say, ‘Yeah, I like the direction we’re going. Things are turned around. We can’t let the Democrats ruin that.’»
Most Democrats obviously disagree with the political narrative coming from the club.
And the Democratic National Committee has long criticized the group for its «extreme positions on banning abortion and cutting Social Security and Medicare.»
While the club is ramping up for the general election showdowns, it’s already playing in this year’s GOP primaries.

In the battle for the Senate, the club recently made a major endorsement, backing Rep. Mike Collins of Georgia, who’s involved in an ugly three-way fist fight for the Republican nomination in the race to take on Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in the southeastern swing state.
«We’re definitely going to be there in Georgia to help Mike Collins win,» McIntosh pledged.
FORMER NAVY SEAL TOPPLED IN REPUBLICAN HOUSE PRIMARY IN TEXAS
The club enjoyed a major victory March 3, as the candidate it was backing, Texas state Rep. Steve Toth, toppled high-profile incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a former Navy SEAL officer, in the GOP primary for a Houston-area congressional seat.

But in this case, the club kept quiet its efforts to support Toth, as it put its funding in an aligned startup PAC.

McIntosh said he «knew if Club for Growth came in guns blazing, then the Washington money would come in to help Crenshaw.»
«We don’t need the glory. We don’t need to take credit for it,» McIntosh said. And pointing to Tosh, he added, «He did the job, but we were able to bring the funds in that let the voters know what their choice was.»

José Antonio Kast se convertirá este miércoles en el primer presidente abiertamente pinochetista de Chile, a 36 años de la recuperación de la democracia, en un giro de 180 grados después de cuatro años de gobierno izquierdista de Gabriel Boric.
Kast, de 60 años, asumirá el poder en un contexto global complejo dominado por la guerra de Medio Oriente y en un país cuya mayor preocupación pasa hoy por la inseguridad y la inmigración.

Chile se ha caracterizado por pacíficas alternancias de poder entre la izquierda moderada y la derecha tradicional no pinochetista en las últimas tres décadas.
Este será el primer gobierno de un presidente que, a lo largo de su extensa carrera política, reivindicó en varias ocasiones la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet (1973-90) y que prometió en campaña “mano dura” contra la violencia y la migración irregular.
“Un cambio de expectativas”
Javier Milei será uno de los presidentes de la región que asistirán a la jura de Kast, que se realizará en la sede del Congreso Nacional, en la ciudad de Valparaíso, 121 kilómetros al norte de Santiago. Entre ambos hay una gran sintonía ideológica y personal.
Además, se espera la presencia de sus pares de Ecuador, Daniel Noboa; de Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves; de Honduras, Nasry Asfura; de Paraguay, Santiago Peña, y de Bolivia, Rodrigo Paz, todos ubicados en el arco ideológico de la centroderecha, entre otros. También estará la líder opositora venezolana, María Corina Machado. Sin embargo, no asistirán tres presidentes identificados con el progresismo en la región: el brasileño Luiz Lula da Silva, la mexicana Claudia Sheinbaum y el colombiano Gustavo Petro. En cambio estará el uruguayo Yamandú Orsi.
Kast gobernará hasta el año 2030 después de imponerse en el balotaje del pasado 14 de diciembre, con más del 58% de los votos, a la candidata oficialista Jeannette Jara, afiliada al Partido Comunista (PC).

La analista chilena Marta Lagos, fundadora de la consultora Latinobarómetro y la encuestadora MORI Chile, dijo a TN que la asunción de Kast abre un escenario caracterizado “sobre todo por un cambio de expectativas”.
La economía chilena creció alrededor del 2,5% el año pasado. El Banco Central estima un alza del PBI de entre 1,75% y 2,75% para 2026.
“Los empresarios empezarán a invertir porque confían en el (nuevo) gobierno. Pero dada la situación económica mundial debido a las guerras, las inversiones, la bolsa y las monedas que están volátiles, el efecto positivo en la economía tendrá que esperar a que se calme la situación mundial”, dijo Lagos.
En campaña, Kast prometió recortar 6000 millones de dólares de gasto en los próximos 18 meses.
La inflación en Chile cerró en 2025 con 3,5% anual, el nivel más bajo en cinco años, según el Instituto Nacional de Estadísticas (INE). El desempleo se ubica en 8%.
Inseguridad y migración
La inseguridad es el gran problema que enfrentan los chilenos. Esta preocupación está presente en todas las encuestas. El país pasó de ser el más seguro del Cono Sur a presentar un creciente índice de violencia vinculada al narcotráfico.
Si bien Boric logró bajar un 11,5% los asesinatos el año pasado, la tasa de homicidios se ubicó en 5,4 por cada 100.000 habitantes frente al 6,1 de 2024. En Argentina, ese índice se situó en 3,7, el más bajo de Sudamérica.
Un sondeo reciente del Centro de Estudios Fundación Paz Ciudadana reveló que el 23,8% de los chilenos consultados consideraba “bastante o muy probable” ser víctima de asesinato en los próximos 12 meses.

“La gente esperará que el gobierno mande militares a las calles a eliminar la violencia, los homicidios y los asaltos. Pero no creo que Chile pueda lograr más que lo que han logrado otros países con los militares, a menos que sigan a (el presidente de El Salvador Nayib) Bukele”, dijo Lagos.
Los expertos achacan las causas de la violencia a la entrada de bandas internacionales del narcotráfico, como la venezolana Tren de Aragua, lo que derivó en una ola de xenofobia contra la emigración de ese origen estimada en alrededor de 700.000 personas.
Kast prometió en campaña expulsar a todos los inmigrantes sin papeles. Se estima que 300.000 migrantes, sobre un total de 1,6 millones, carecen de documentos. La mayoría de ellos son venezolanos.

El régimen de Corea del Norte se sumó a Rusia y respaldó la elección del nuevo líder supremo de Irán, Mojtaba Khamenei
Las autoridades de la dictadura norcoreana expresaron este miércoles su apoyo a la elección del nuevo líder supremo de Irán, Mojtaba Khamenei, tras la muerte de su padre, Ali Khamenei, durante el primer día de los bombardeos de Estados Unidos e Israel a Teherán.
Un portavoz del Ministerio de Exteriores de Corea del Norte afirmó que, “ante el reciente anuncio oficial de la Asamblea de Expertos iraní”, Pyongyang respalda “el derecho y la libertad del pueblo iraní de elegir a su propio líder supremo”, según recogió la agencia estatal KCNA.
El portavoz manifestó además su “profunda preocupación” y condenó enérgicamente lo que calificó como agresión “ilegal” por parte de las fuerzas estadounidenses e israelíes, a quienes acusó de “socavar los cimientos de la paz y la seguridad regionales, y aumentar la inestabilidad en el panorama internacional”.
En ese sentido, el funcionario del régimen liderado por Kim Jong-Un señaló que “todas las formas de amenazas retóricas y acciones militares que socaven el sistema político y la integridad territorial del país en cuestión, interfieran en sus asuntos internos y aboguen abiertamente por el derrocamiento son inaceptables bajo cualquier circunstancia y deben ser condenadas y rechazadas”.
La semana pasada, Corea del Norte calificó los ataques militares de Estados Unidos e Israel contra Irán como “un acto de agresión totalmente ilegal” y “la forma más despreciable de violación de la soberanía”, en medio del estancamiento de las conversaciones nucleares indirectas entre Washington y Teherán.
Pyongyang y Teherán mantienen una relación histórica de cooperación en materia de defensa y tecnología militar, y el conflicto en Medio Oriente podría reforzar la postura norcoreana de que su arsenal nuclear es fundamental para garantizar la supervivencia del régimen.
Entre otras personalidades internacionales que apoyaron la asunción política de Mojtaba Khamenei se encontró el líder del movimiento hutí de Yemen, Abdelmalek al Hutí, quien calificó el lunes el nombramiento como “una bofetada enorme” para Estados Unidos e Israel.
En una carta de felicitación publicada por medios hutíes, Al Hutí elogió la transición de liderazgo en Irán como una victoria para la Revolución Islámica. “Esta exitosa elección fortalece los cimientos del sistema islámico y asesta una bofetada a los tiranos de esta era: Estados Unidos e Israel”, expresó el líder hutí.
A su vez, enmarcó la resiliencia de Irán como parte de una lucha más amplia contra “el plan sionista para cambiar Medio Oriente” y añadió que “la firmeza y la resistencia eficaz de Irán contra la agresión conducirán a la victoria”. El politburó hutí elogió el nombramiento como “una nueva victoria para la Revolución Islámica” y celebró la sucesión como “un golpe rotundo” para los adversarios de Irán.
El comunicado subrayó “la fe, la sabiduría y el coraje” de Mojtaba Khamenei y expresó confianza en que su liderazgo fortalecerá el papel de Irán en la lucha contra la “agresión estadounidense-israelí” y la “arrogancia global”. La transición marca la primera sucesión hereditaria en la historia de la República Islámica.
El presidente de Rusia, Vladimir Putin, también expresó el apoyo “inquebrantable” de su país a Irán tras la elección de Mojtaba como sucesor en el liderazgo supremo iraní.
“Rusia ha sido y seguirá siendo un socio fiable de la República Islámica. Le deseo éxito en las tareas difíciles que enfrenta”, señaló Putin en su mensaje de felicitación difundido por la Presidencia rusa. El mandatario reafirmó la solidaridad de Moscú con Teherán y sus “amigos iraníes”.
Putin subrayó que el nuevo mandato requiere “gran coraje y dedicación” en un contexto de agresión armada. “Confío en que continuará con honor la labor de su padre y que unirá al pueblo iraní durante estas duras pruebas”, concluyó el presidente ruso.
La Asamblea de Expertos, compuesta por 88 miembros, eligió a Khamenei como sucesor, respaldado por autoridades políticas, parlamentarias y militares de Irán, que defendieron la designación como una medida para garantizar la estabilidad del país en el contexto de la guerra con Estados Unidos e Israel.
