New York City socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s past stances on policing are a legitimate reason for New Yorkers to be concerned, despite his recent walkbacks, according to a New York City crime expert who spoke to Fox News Digital. 

«I think what scares a lot of New Yorkers about the policy positions taken by Zohran Mamdani over the years is that he has exhibited not just a lack of appreciation for the men and women that stand on that [police] line, but a visceral disdain for them, which has led him to push for things like defunding and dismantling the police,» Rafael A. Mangual, senior fellow and head of research for policing and public safety at the Manhattan Institute, told Fox News Digital, shortly after a gunman killed four people in midtown Manhattan, including a NYPD police officer.

New Zealand’s air force carried out a nearly 20-hour medical evacuation to rescue three Americans from Antarctica, calling it a high-risk mission conducted in freezing temperatures and total darkness.

The U.S. National Science Foundation requested the evacuation after three staff members at McMurdo Station were unable to receive adequate medical treatment on-site.

One of the individuals required urgent care, while the other two also needed medical attention and were transported as a precaution, according to New Zealand’s air force.

Air Commodore Andy Scott, head of New Zealand’s air component, said mid-winter flights to Antarctica are among the most difficult missions due to shifting weather, extreme cold and ice landings in total darkness.

«The crew can only attempt the flight after detailed analysis of the weather and airfield state,» Scott said. «The United States Antarctic Program Winter Team must physically create the runway before we can depart by ensuring the ice is groomed and suitable for landing.

«Although they determine it is safe, it’s still an extremely challenging environment to fly in on Night Vision Goggles due to the extreme weather conditions, which are highly changeable at this time of year and makes accurate forecasting a challenge,» he added. «This, coupled with there being no airfields available to divert to once the aircraft is past a certain point south adds to the risk, so these missions are not taken lightly.»

A medical team, including a physician, accompanied the crew to provide in-flight care during the return to Christchurch.

The aircraft was pre-positioned from Auckland to Christchurch on Sunday, with a crew on standby for a weather window.

The crew made the decision on Tuesday to fly to Antarctica, working through the night to complete the mission.

After landing on the ice runway, the aircraft’s engines remained running to prevent freezing during refueling, the air force said.

The round-trip mission lasted 19.5 hours, with the aircraft touching down in Christchurch on Wednesday morning.

Temperatures at McMurdo Station dropped to -11°F during the operation, adding to the already dangerous conditions.

Melissa Sweeney, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to New Zealand, praised the operation as «flawless.»

La Asamblea Nacional (Parlamento) de Nicaragua aprobó este miércoles una reforma parcial a la Constitución para crear la Procuraduría General de Justicia con el fin de “combatir la corrupción”.

La iniciativa, propuesta por los dictadores Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo, fue aprobada de forma expedita por los 91 diputados que integran el Parlamento, controlado por los sandinistas y sus aliados.

“Con la consigna de ‘Todos contra la corrupción, la Copresidencia de la República ha orientado la creación de una Procuraduría General de Justicia que, en conjunto con las instituciones correspondientes, identifique, persiga, procese y penalice, castigando firmemente, sin ninguna consideración que pretenda disminuir el vicio evidente de los corruptos, de manera que todos estos actos sean implacablemente, y cotidianamente, perseguidos, identificados, procesados y penados”, indicó la dictadura en su exposición de motivos.

La Procuraduría General de Justicia, que ejercerá la representación legal y de defensa de los intereses supremos del Estado y del pueblo nicaragüense, estará integrada por todos los órganos de la actual Procuraduría General de la República, incorpora el Ministerio Público “y otros organismos que cumplan funciones similares para garantizar el resguardo del patrimonio nacional del Estado y el pueblo nicaragüenses”, según la norma.

Será la instancia encargada de resguardar el patrimonio público “y combatir con contundencia, todas las formas de despojo de las conquistas de la revolución; ejerciendo la función acusadora con rigurosidad y en representación de las víctimas del delito, incluyendo las que aquejan a toda la humanidad, como el lavado de activos, narcotráfico y el crimen organizado”.

Además, identificará, perseguirá y procesará a todo responsable de actos lesivos al patrimonio económico, natural, cultural, material, político y jurídico del pueblo nicaragüense, “no permitiendo de ninguna manera el encubrimiento de intereses ajenos a nuestro pueblo, para cometer o seguir cometiendo infames actos de robo y saqueo”.

En su exposición de motivos, la dictadura sandinista aseguró que ha instruido a las instituciones pertinentes “a desatar acciones contundentes para perseguir, procesar y castigar cualquier forma de corrupción que atente contra los intereses de las familias y el pueblo nicaragüense”.

La Procuraduría General de Justicia no permitirá, “de ninguna manera, disfrazar o encubrir intereses ajenos a nuestro pueblo para cometer o seguir cometiendo infames actos de robo y saqueo del erario y los patrimonios del pueblo nicaragüense”, sostuvo la Copresidencia.

“Todo acto que vulnere nuestras leyes de probidad y atente contra los intereses supremos de la patria y el pueblo, será sancionado con las máximas penas establecidas en nuestros Códigos”, añadió.

Esa reforma parcial constitucional que crea la Procuraduría General de Justicia tendrá que ser aprobada en segunda legislatura el próximo año para que entre en vigor.

Desde 2018, la dictadura sandinista ha desplegado un aparato represivo sistemático que incluye detenciones arbitrarias, desapariciones forzadas, censura a la prensa y persecución a defensores de derechos humanos e indígenas. Organizaciones como Amnistía Internacional y Human Rights Watch han documentado el uso de la fuerza letal contra manifestantes, la cancelación de más de 3.000 ONG, el cierre forzoso de universidades y la revocación masiva de nacionalidades. La reforma constitucional de 2025 consolidó esta represión al legalizar la confiscación de bienes, las deportaciones y el silenciamiento de cualquier voz disidente, mientras una red de vigilancia estatal identifica y neutraliza a opositores reales o percibidos.

Además, los pueblos indígenas enfrentan una violencia sistemática vinculada a la expansión minera y al avance de grupos armados en sus territorios, con más de 70 asesinatos reportados entre 2020 y 2024. Lejos de protegerlos, el Estado ha contribuido a su despojo mediante leyes represivas y omisión deliberada. La represión también ha alcanzado a periodistas, líderes religiosos y ciudadanos comunes, generando un exilio forzado de miles de nicaragüenses. Según expertos de la ONU, estas prácticas podrían constituir crímenes de lesa humanidad, enmarcadas en una estrategia de control total del poder político, social y cultural en el país.
