Johnson shutters House again in bid to keep shutdown heat on Schumer

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has once again instructed House lawmakers to remain in their home districts next week, keeping attention — and heat — in Washington on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., for over a month.
A clerk in the House of Representatives announced on Friday that Johnson is designating Oct. 20 through Oct. 23 as a «district work period,» meaning no votes or House hearings are expected to be held for that time.
It’s part of the pressure strategy Johnson has implemented against Democrats amid the ongoing government shutdown, which is barreling into a fourth week with the GOP’s federal funding plan stalled in the Senate.
The House GOP passed its federal funding plan on Sept. 19, a seven-week extension of fiscal year (FY) 2025 government spending levels, called a continuing resolution (CR).

It was aimed at giving congressional negotiators more time to strike a longer-term deal on FY 2026 spending.
But Democrats, infuriated by being sidelined in the talks, are threatening to reject any deal that does not include an extension of COVID-19 pandemic-era Obamacare subsidies that are set to expire at the end of December.
Democrats reason that millions of Americans are expected to see their healthcare premiums skyrocket even before the subsidies themselves expire at the end of this year, and with no plan in place.
Republican leaders have signaled openness to having those discussions at a later date — albeit not without reforming the system — but are holding firm to their demand that the CR be passed without any partisan policy riders attached.
Johnson told reporters earlier on Friday that he would give House members 48 hours’ notice before they had to return for any votes, something he’s stated both publicly and privately for weeks.

But while his House GOP conference is holding largely united behind him, there are several Republicans growing uncomfortable with the lengthy recess period.
Both Reps. Jay Obernolte, R-Calif., and Julie Fedorchak, R-N.D., expressed concern about the extended time at home during a private call among House Republicans earlier this month.
Rep. Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., has been more public with his pushback. He told MSNBC live on television Wednesday, «It is absolutely unacceptable to me and I think only serves further distrust.»
And Rep. Dave Valadao, while not explicitly pushing back on Johnson’s decision, told Fox News Digital that he was «kind of torn on that» before blaming Senate Democrats for putting the GOP in this situation.
Meanwhile, Rep. Johnny Olszewski, D-Md., the lone House Democrat who was in the chamber when the district work period was declared, criticized Johnson for keeping the chamber out of session.

«Congress has been absent here in the House for almost a month when there are critical conversations that need to be happening about reopening the government, lowering the cost of healthcare for millions of Americans, and also moving forward on critical issues,» Olszewski said.
In a sign of a likely lengthy shutdown, the Senate is preparing to hold a standalone vote next week on paying government workers who are forced to work during the shutdown, including active-duty military members.
Asked by reporters if the House would come back to vote on the measure if it passed the Senate, Johnson said Friday, «If we have a viable path, yes, but I suspect the Democrats are going to bat it down again.»

State Department warns Hamas may violate ceasefire with attack on Palestinian civilians

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
The U.S. Department of State on Saturday warned there are «credible reports» that Hamas may break the peace agreement with a «planned attack» on Palestinian civilians.
«This planned attack against Palestinian civilians would constitute a direct and grave violation of the ceasefire agreement and undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts,» the department said in a statement on social media. «The guarantors demand Hamas uphold its obligations under the ceasefire terms.
«The United States and the other guarantors remain resolute in our commitment to ensuring the safety of civilians, maintaining calm on the ground and advancing peace and prosperity for the people of Gaza and the region as a whole.»
A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas went into effect last weekend after two years of war in the region following the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel.

On Monday, the 20 remaining surviving Israeli hostages were returned to Israel per the agreement, but more than a dozen remains of hostages who were killed are still under Hamas control.
The State Department added that «measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire» if Hamas proceeds with the attack.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump issued a warning on Truth Social after footage circulated online showing Hamas fighters executing Palestinians in Gaza City’s main square.
«If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,» he wrote.

According to Reuters, at least 33 people were executed by Hamas in recent days in what officials described as a campaign to «show strength» after the ceasefire. Israeli sources say most of those killed belonged to families accused of collaborating with Israel or supporting rival militias.
Trump later clarified that U.S. troops would not go into Gaza.

«It’s not going to be us,» he told reporters. «We won’t have to. There are people very close, very nearby that will go in, and they’ll do the trick very easily, but under our auspices.»

Newsom clashes with White House over Marine Corps anniversary celebration highway closure

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
The 250th anniversary celebration of the U.S. Marine Corps at San Diego County’s Camp Pendleton Saturday sparked a heated social media exchange between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and the White House.
The event, America’s Marines 250: From Sea to Shore: A Review of Amphibious Strength, featured a range of festivities at the Marine Corps base, including a large-scale live-fire demonstration attended by Vice President JD Vance.
Newsom blasted the display of military power as «dangerous» and «an absurd show of force,» announcing Saturday that a section of Interstate 5 near the base would be temporarily closed during the celebration.
«Because of the Trump Admin’s plans, drivers should expect delays on Interstate 5 and other state routes throughout Southern California before, during and after the event,» Newsom posted to X.

The Democrat doubled down later in the day, accusing the White House of denying earlier in the week that any freeway closures would be needed despite the use of live munitions.

However, the White House quickly fired back, accusing Newsom of distorting the facts.
«Newscum is lying,» the White House’s Rapid Response account posted to X. «He closed the highway — not only did nobody at the White House or the Marines ask him to do so, the Marines repeatedly said there are no public safety concerns with today’s exercises. Newscum lies and tries to make it about himself? Day ending in ‘y.’»
The White House account also reposted an X post from Trump advisor Alex Bruesewitz, who wrote, «Gavin Newscum is shutting down a major CA highway just because JD Vance is in the state. Inconveniencing tens of thousands of Americans. What a petty little man.»

Newsom then rebutted, «The [California Highway Patrol] and highway safety experts are saying what any person with common sense knows: It is not safe for people to drive on a major freeway at high speeds directly under LIVE MUNITIONS.
«White House not communicating, endangering the public, and then trying to blame the Governor for doing the right thing — keeping people out of harm’s way — yet another day living in Trump’s authoritarian America.»
TRUMP VS. NEWSOM SHOWDOWN LANDS IN COURT WITH FAMILY TIES TO THE NATION’S HIGHEST BENCH
The exchange followed days of tension between Newsom and the Trump administration over the Camp Pendleton event.
Earlier in the week, the California governor called the anniversary celebration a «vanity parade.»
«Donald Trump and JD Vance think that shutting down the I-5 to shoot out missiles from ships is how you respect the military,» Newsom posted to X Wednesday, while reposting an X post from left-leaning outlet MeidasTouch that claimed the White House planned to close parts of the I-5 during the event. «PUT ASIDE YOUR VANITY PARADE AND PAY OUR TROOPS INSTEAD.»
However, William Martin, special assistant to the president and communications director to the vice president, quickly pushed back against Newsom.

«This is complete fake news,» Martin declared in a post on X, which was reposted by the @VP X account. «The Marine Corps said they are NOT shutting down the I-5 highway and that the event at Camp Pendleton is a training exercise. Also, President Trump IS paying the troops despite Chuck Schumer’s efforts to hold their salaries hostage.»
A Marine Corps press release Wednesday about the festivities said that «no public highways or transportation routes will be closed.»

Extensive safety measures were implemented at the celebration, which was expected to draw more than 15,000 attendees, including detailed risk assessments, emergency crews on site and fully scripted air, surface and ground movements, FOX 11 Los Angeles reported earlier in the week, citing event organizers.
Newsom and the White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
