Counterterrorism police are leading an investigation after four Jewish community ambulances were set on fire outside a synagogue in London early Monday in what authorities are treating as an antisemitic hate crime. 

The attack took place around 1:45 a.m. in the Golders Green neighborhood, where Hatzola ambulances, a volunteer emergency service run by the Jewish community, were deliberately set ablaze in a synagogue parking lot, according to a statement by Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams of the Metropolitan Police.

«This arson attack is being treated as an antisemitic hate crime. This is a devastating incident for our Jewish communities,» Williams said. He added that while the incident has not yet been formally declared terrorism, «the investigation is now being led by Counterterrorism Policing… and all lines of enquiry remain open.»

A video circulating online purports to show Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiyya, an Iran-linked group that has claimed responsibility for recent attacks on Jewish sites in Belgium and the Netherlands, taking credit for the London attack, according to the Jewish Chronicle.

Authorities are examining a potential link to a newly emerged group with suspected ties to Iran. «We are aware of an online claim from a group taking responsibility for this attack,» Williams said. «Establishing the authenticity and accuracy of this claim will be a priority… but it is not something we can confirm at this point.»

Alan Mendoza, executive director of the Henry Jackson Society, told Fox News Digital that the attack reflects years of policy failures in confronting Iranian activity on British soil. «Successive U.K. Governments have completely failed in their primary duty of keeping the home front safe. Iranian terrorist activity has been known about in the U.K. for years yet no significant moves have been made to ban the IRGC or restrict the ability of regime-linked entities to function within British society. We have created the conditions for terrorism to flourish,» he said. 

He argued that Britain’s broader approach to the conflict with Iran — attempting to maintain distance while avoiding direct confrontation — has further emboldened Tehran. «The current policy on the war in Iran is delusional. The Government is pretending Britain is not involved. The Iranian regime does not, however, believe in neutrality and has decided its position for us: ripe for targeting.»

Joe Truzman, a senior research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said in a post on X that «My initial assessment is that the attack could potentially be linked to Ashab al-Yamin, an Iran-linked group that has carried out multiple attacks against Jewish institutions across Europe since the war began… Hopefully this is something different, but the possibility that the group is involved should be examined.»

Police said they are searching for three suspects seen on CCTV pouring an accelerant onto the vehicles before igniting them. No injuries were reported, though nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. 

The attack comes amid a broader wave of violence targeting Jewish communities across Europe in recent weeks.

Scott Saunders, CEO of the International March of the Living, said the incident represents a dangerous escalation. «The arson attack in Golders Green… marks a dangerous escalation in the targeting of Jewish communities,» Saunders said. «Emergency vehicles operated by Jewish volunteer first responders were deliberately attacked… in direct proximity to a place of worship — a space that should represent safety.»

«These ambulances do not only serve Jewish communities… Targeting them is an attack not only on Jewish life, but on the shared fabric of the community they serve,» he added. «Since the war with Iran began, antisemitic attacks have become more frequent, more brazen, and more direct. Jewish institutions are being singled out; synagogues, community spaces, and now even the emergency services that exist to protect Jewish lives, with a growing sense that these are legitimate targets. Following the deadly shooting in and around a synagogue in Manchester last October, where this escalation already resulted in loss of life, the attack in Golders Green makes clear that this trajectory is continuing.»

Dr. Charles Asher Small, founder of the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism and Policy, said the attack reflects a broader trend.

«The attack against a visible Jewish target is not an isolated act of vandalism; it is the violent fruition of a climate where Jew-hatred has been normalized and institutionalized,» Small said.

«At the center of this malignancy sits the Iranian regime… which actively funds and directs the networks that view British Jewish institutions as legitimate targets,» he added.

British officials also condemned the attack.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, «An attack on our Jewish community is an attack on us all. We will fight the poison that is antisemitism.»

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis called the incident on X «a particularly sickening assault — not only on the Jewish community, but on the values we share as a society.»

«The targeting of Hatzola… is a most painful illustration of the ongoing battle between those who sanctify life and those who seek to destroy it,» he added in a statement posted March 23, 2026.

Police said there have been no arrests and urged anyone with information to come forward.

Nadie se imaginaba que, detrás de la puerta cerrada y de una pantalla de computadora, se estaba gestando una tragedia que marcaría un antes y un después en la forma de entender el acoso digital.

Horas más tarde, Megan Meier fue encontrada colgada dentro del placard de su cuarto. Si bien sus padres alertaron la situación y lograron trasladarla a un hospital cuando aún tenía signos vitales, la joven murió al día siguiente.

Su familia no entendía por qué Megan había tomado esa drástica decisión, hasta que su padre, Ron Meier, entró a su habitación y leyó un chat que sería la primera pista de una trama mucho más oscura y dramática.

Un amigo virtual

Megan Taylor Meier nació el 6 de noviembre de 1992 y era una adolescente como tantas otras. Sin embargo, desde muy temprana edad manifestó síntomas relacionados con problemas de salud mental, como un trastorno alimenticio, déficit de atención y depresión.

Cuando estaba cursando tercer grado, la joven habló sobre suicidarse y, a partir de ese momento, arrancó a hacer terapia. Desde ahí, su vida comenzó a mejorar: se cambió de escuela, empezó a jugar al voley en un equipo estudiantil y usaba My Space, la red social más popular de ese momento, donde buscaba hacer amigos y conectar con otros chicos de su edad.

Fue allí donde conoció a Josh Evans, un supuesto joven de 16 años que rápidamente comenzó a escribirle y del cual ella se terminó enamorando.

La relación pasó a ser de amistosa a algo más en poco tiempo: Josh le decía que era linda, que le gustaba su personalidad, y que quería conocerla mejor. Para Megan, que atravesaba inseguridades con su cuerpo y dificultades para relacionarse con otros chicos de su edad, esos mensajes eran significativos. Durante seis semanas, intercambiaron conversaciones que parecían propias de dos adolescentes que empezaban a gustarse.

Pero de un día para el otro, el tono de Josh se volvió frío y distante. Luego, directamente agresivo. Los mensajes pasaron de la admiración al rechazo. “No sé si quiero seguir siendo tu amigo, porque escuché que no sos muy amable con tus amigos”, le escribió en uno de los chats.

La situación escaló rápidamente cuando el supuesto joven comenzó a difundir comentarios crueles y a incentivar a que otros usuarios también se sumaran al hostigamiento.

Uno de los últimos mensajes que recibió Megan fue devastador: “Sos una mala persona y todos te odian. Que tengas una vida miserable. El mundo sería un mejor lugar sin vos”. Esas palabras son las que leyó el papá de la adolescente después de la tragedia.

La verdad detrás del perfil falso

La muerte de Megan generó conmoción en su comunidad, ya que estaba a punto de cumplir tan solo 14 años. Pero lo más impactante aún estaba por descubrirse.

A medida que avanzó la investigación, las autoridades comenzaron a rastrear el origen del perfil de “Josh Evans” y lo que encontraron fue tan inesperado como perturbador: el supuesto adolescente no existía.

Detrás de la cuenta había en realidad una mujer adulta, identificada como Lori Drew, de 48 años, que era la madre de una examiga de Megan. Según se reconstruyó en el expediente, ella había creado el perfil falso -con la ayuda de otro hombre- con el objetivo inicial de obtener información sobre Megan y saber qué decía de su hija.

Sin embargo, lo que comenzó como una especie de maniobra de vigilancia terminó en algo mucho más grave, ya que los mensajes se volvieron cada vez más hostiles. La investigación estableció entonces que la relación ficticia que había construido Drew fue utilizada como una herramienta para manipular emocionalmente a la adolescente.

Uno de los puntos más controvertidos del caso fue determinar quién había escrito exactamente los mensajes más crueles, incluido el último.

Según declaró la acusada ante la Justicia, tanto ella como su hija escribieron, leyeron y monitorearon la comunicación entre el perfil de “Josh” y Megan.

Una investigación con vacíos legales

El caso planteó un desafío inédito para la Justicia, ya que en 2006 el concepto de “ciberacoso” aún no estaba definido en muchas legislaciones, y no existían herramientas legales específicas para abordar situaciones como esta.

En un primer momento, las autoridades locales decidieron no presentar una denuncia contra Lori Drew, lo que provocó una ola de críticas. En paralelo, la familia de Megan consideraba que había responsabilidad directa en la muerte de la adolescente.

Ante la presión, el caso fue retomado a nivel federal. Los fiscales encontraron una vía alternativa para avanzar: acusaron a Drew de violar los términos de servicio de MySpace, y argumentaron que había creado una cuenta con información engañosa.

El juicio, que se desarrolló en 2008, fue seguida de cerca por los medios de todo el país. Finalmente, Lori Drew fue declarada culpable de algunos cargos menores relacionados con el uso indebido de sistemas informáticos. Sin embargo, al año siguiente, un juez la absolvió al considerar que la interpretación de la ley era demasiado amplia y que no se podía criminalizar una violación de términos de servicio de esa manera.

Si bien la Justicia no logró dar una respuesta contundente, el impacto social del caso fue enorme. Después del juicio, en varios estados de Estados Unidos comenzaron a revisar y endurecer sus leyes sobre ciberbullying. Por este motivo, se impulsaron campañas de concientización en escuelas y se promovió un mayor control por parte de los adultos sobre la actividad digital de los jóvenes.

Para la familia de la víctima, la tragedia se transformó en una causa. Sus padres crearon una fundación -llamada Megan Meier Foundation– para prevenir el bullying y trabajar de manera activa en la difusión de su historia, con el objetivo de evitar que algo similar vuelva a ocurrir.

The following day, Trump said the meeting would instead take place in «about five or six weeks,» adding, «We’re working with China — they were fine with it.»

«The president has some things here at home in May that he has to attend to,» White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters March 16, adding that the two sides would set a date «as soon as we can.»

At the same time, U.S. strikes on Iran — and earlier pressure on Venezuela — have been affecting countries central to China’s energy supply, disrupting shipping and raising costs without fully cutting off flows. 

China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil, and shipments are still moving despite the conflict. But increased risk, higher prices and logistical disruptions are squeezing one of Beijing’s most important energy lifelines — raising the prospect of Washington gaining leverage by driving up the cost and risk of the oil China depends on.

Pressure on China’s energy and influence

In recent months, U.S. actions have hit two countries where China has built deep economic ties — Venezuela and Iran, both tied to Beijing through oil and investment.

In 2023, China helped broker a deal restoring relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, a move widely seen as a sign of Beijing’s growing influence in the Middle East. That détente is now under strain as the conflict escalates, exposing the limits of China’s ability to sustain stability once fighting begins.

Those developments point to China’s position more clearly: a global power with significant economic reach, but limited willingness — and potentially limited ability — to shield its partners when conflict escalates.

«It is very much connected,» said Brent Sadler of the conservative Heritage Foundation Washington think tank. «It’s all connected to China at the end of it.»

For Beijing, the stakes are primarily economic. China is the world’s largest oil importer, and disruptions to Iranian supply can raise costs, complicate logistics and reduce access to discounted crude that has helped fuel its economy.

At the same time, the conflict itself is rooted in long-running tensions with Iran, including its nuclear program, missile capabilities and support for regional proxy groups.

«It’s not all about China,» said Piero Tozzi of the America First Policy Institute. «It’s primarily about Iran.»

That distinction — between what is driving the conflict and what it affects — has shaped the debate in Washington over how much the fallout could influence broader U.S.-China dynamics.

The delay adds another layer to that dynamic, coming as energy markets tighten and U.S.-China discussions continue.

Oil flows disrupted — but still moving

China’s dependence on Iranian oil remains a central vulnerability, even as the conflict disrupts shipping lanes and raises risks in the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly half of China’s seaborne oil imports pass.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped sharply and become far more volatile, with only limited oil shipments still getting through under heightened risk.

Iran accounts for roughly 13% of China’s crude imports, while China remains Tehran’s largest customer, purchasing an estimated 80–90% of its exports.

Much of that oil is sold at a discount — often $8 per barrel to $10 per barrel — giving Chinese refiners access to cheaper crude that is difficult to replace elsewhere.

Much of the trade is handled by smaller independent «teapot» refineries, allowing Beijing to maintain imports while limiting exposure of its state-owned energy companies to U.S. sanctions.

In many cases, those transactions are conducted in yuan rather than dollars, with proceeds often recycled into Chinese goods and infrastructure projects.

«One of China’s long-term objectives is challenging the supremacy of the dollar,» Tozzi said.

«It’s going to be hard to turn off the supplier side of this,» Sadler said, pointing to the entrenched networks that keep crude moving despite sanctions and conflict.

Those networks — built over years of sanctions — allow Iranian oil to be rerouted through indirect channels, often using tankers that operate outside traditional tracking systems.

For China, that means continued access to supply, but at higher cost and greater risk, as shipments become more difficult to move and insure.

The result is sustained pressure rather than a cutoff: fewer shipments, higher prices and increased uncertainty around a supply line Beijing has come to rely on.

The Trump administration also has taken an unusual step to stabilize energy markets, temporarily easing sanctions on Iranian oil already loaded on tankers to allow those barrels to be sold. The short-term waiver, covering an estimated 140 million barrels, is aimed at easing supply disruptions caused by the conflict.

But it also widens access to oil that had largely been flowing to China, increasing competition for those barrels rather than allowing Beijing to remain the dominant buyer.

The U.S. also has eased some restrictions on Russian oil in recent weeks, allowing additional supply to flow to Asia. Taken together, the moves are reshaping global oil flows — forcing China to compete more directly for supply rather than relying as heavily on discounted crude.

U.S. intelligence assessments reflect similar limits, describing the China-Iran relationship as economically significant but largely transactional rather than a coordinated strategic bloc.

Combat experience — and a strain on stockpiles

The Iran conflict is giving U.S. forces real-world experience that cannot be replicated in training environments, allowing different branches of the military to operate together under live conditions and test how their systems perform.

«There’s a lot of real-world experience getting gained,» Sadler said. «We are refining our capabilities in a massive way.» 

But those gains come with costs. 

«We’re also wearing down our sailors, as well as the material, the aircraft and the ships.»

The same stockpiles being used in the Middle East would be needed to deter any conflict in the Indo-Pacific.

«We don’t produce munitions at the speed and capacity that we should be. It’s not a new problem,» Sadler said. «We’re going to go through a lot of our interceptor missiles very quickly.»

He warned that at current production rates, inventories could last only «maybe a week or two,» assuming they are used judiciously.

As of late 2025, the U.S. had roughly 414 SM-3 interceptors and 534 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THADD) interceptors, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. THAAD is one of the U.S. military’s primary systems for intercepting ballistic missiles in their final phase of flight.

Those systems have been used heavily in recent Middle East operations, and they also would be central in any potential conflict with China, particularly in defending U.S. forces and allies in the Indo-Pacific from missile attacks.

Drawing down those stockpiles now raises a practical concern: the more the U.S. uses these interceptors in the Middle East, the fewer are immediately available for a high-end conflict with Beijing.

China keeps its distance

Beijing has avoided direct involvement in the U.S.–Israel conflict in Iran, focusing on diplomacy, with its deep oil reserves as a fallback. 

«They’re all very opportunistic,» Sadler said. «They don’t want to take any undue risk.»

«The more diplomatic noise they make, the more it draws attention from their incapacity to stand up for their partners,» he said.

The conflict’s effects extend beyond the region, testing China’s role as a global power while forcing the United States to weigh immediate military demands against its longer-term competition with Beijing.

Chinese officials said they were «highly concerned» by the escalation and urged an immediate halt to military operations, while Foreign Minister Wang Yi described the strikes as «unacceptable.»

The Chinese embassy could not immediately be reached for comment.
