Senate lawmakers clash over Trump administration’s approach to speech, censorship

Senate Republicans and Democrats alike are concerned over the Trump administration’s overtures that critics, political enemies and people engaging in hate speech will be targeted.
Last week, President Donald Trump and top officials in his administration sparked a wave of criticism and concern over the fate of free speech in remarks that suggested possibly targeting people for hate speech, revoking broadcasting licenses and prosecuting political enemies.
The sidelining of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel from his show by ABC over comments he made related to slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk further stoked fears on Capitol Hill.

White House allies in the Senate argued that under former President Joe Biden, Democrats engaged in the same behavior. But some in the GOP believe that it may be the return of cancel culture, this time pushed by the Right.
«What I’ve told my Democrat friends, I said, ‘guys, this is act two of cancel culture,’» Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., told Fox News Digital. «I mean, we are here because you made people rightfully very angry by doing the same thing, you just didn’t take it to this level.»
«But if we don’t get it under control, this becomes the floor for how government overreaches, and this just becomes a more empowered, imperial president,» he continued. «And again, as a lifelong conservative, it never occurred to me, even if it was for an end that you agree with, it never occurred to me that any true conservative would consider this a justifiable means.»
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., argued that Democrats had already taken censorship that far.
During his tenure as Missouri attorney general, he filed a lawsuit, Missouri v. Biden, that alleged a «vast censorship enterprise» between the federal government and social media companies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Supreme Court ultimately ruled in the administration’s favor.

He contended that the administration officials were talking directly about violent conduct and not targeting the First Amendment.
«I believe in free speech, people have a right to have their opinion, but I do think the Left has to do some self-reflection, when 85% of Democrats think President Trump is a fascist, and 55% of the Left believe that assassinating Trump would be at least somewhat justified,» he said. «I think it’s time to look in the mirror.»
While Kimmel was reinstated by ABC on Monday, his dismissal still struck a chord on Capitol Hill.
Some of the concern among lawmakers stemmed from Federal Communications Chair Brendan Carr, who said last week: «Frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way.»
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, called his comments «dangerous as hell,» and likened them to tactics ripped from a mob movie.
Carr has since clarified his comments, and panned criticisms as «distortion» and «projection» by Democrats.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., told Fox News Digital that the Trump administration was using FCC «license revocation to pressure broadcast companies to take in effect censoring.»
«What we’re seeing is in effect, the censorship that is the mark of the authoritarian regime, and that’s very different from anything in recent history, maybe in any history of the United States,» he said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi also said last week that the administration would «go after you if you are targeting anyone with hate speech.»
She has since clarified her remarks, too, and instead noted that her remarks were geared toward violent conduct, and that «when you cross the line from First Amendment to a crime … we will prosecute you.»
Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, countered that Democratic lawmakers were being hypocritical and had «zero credibility even having a First Amendment conversation.»
«This has nothing to do with silencing free speech, and the fact that the Democrats are even talking about it is literally the most laughable thing I’ve seen in D.C. since I’ve been here,» he said.

And Trump weighed in on the issue last week, pushing back against the press and suggesting that government-controlled airwaves aren’t free.
«They’ll take a great story, and they’ll make it bad,» he said. «See, I think that’s really illegal.»
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., introduced the «No Political Enemies Act» last week to counter the administration’s overtures. He told Fox News Digital: «Why would we not take the president seriously?»
«He literally is using his communication channels to make clear he’s going to lock up his political enemies.»
White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson fired back directly at Murphy in a statement, where she asked: «Where was Chris Murphy when Joe Biden was demanding Meta censor average Americans for sharing facts about COVID? Or when Joe Biden’s FBI investigated parents for expressing concerns at school board meetings.»
«The Fake News Media has spent years attacking the President and lying about his tremendous record of success,» Jackson said. «As someone who actually knows what it’s like to be censored, President Trump is a strong supporter of free speech, and he is right — FCC licensed stations have long been required to follow basic standards.»

Pritzker joins chorus of Dem governors boycotting White House dinner after snub ignites ‘chaos’

A chorus of Democratic governors are rallying behind their fellow Democratic Governors Jared Polis, from Colorado, and Wes Moore, from Maryland, after they did not receive invites for a traditionally bipartisan White House dinner.
Illinois Democrat Governor J.B. Pritzker was among those who decided they would be boycotting the slate of events hosted at the White House for the National Governors Association’s annual winter gathering held Feb. 19-21.
«No way will I attend the White House dinner with this President,» Gov. Pritzker said Tuesday. «I’m standing with Gov. Wes Moore and Gov. Jared Polis — and standing against Trump’s corruption and hatred. And I’m calling on my Republican colleagues to do the same.»
The boycott is being led by the chair of the Democratic Governors Association, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and its vice chair, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Other Democratic Party governors who have committed to the boycott include California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. A coalition of 18 governors signed a statement Tuesday slamming President Donald Trump for creating «chaos and division» by snubbing the state leaders.

The White House reportedly decided to divert from the traditional path of inviting both Republican and Democratic governors to the events being held at the White House. Although a White House official also reportedly told Politico that «many Democrats were invited to dinner at the White House» while others were not.
The move not to invite all Democrat governors to the winter gathering comes after President Trump got into a public spat with Democrat Governor of Maine, Janet Mills, at a bipartisan «Governors Working Session» last year in February over transgender sports participation. The heated back-and-forth was televised on national stations for all to see and led to the pair exchanging barbs for the subsequent weeks over the matter and over the state’s unwillingness to follow federal orders, such as those related to transgender sports participation.
When reached for comment on the matter, a White House spokesperson referred Fox News Digital to press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s comments Tuesday on the matter from the White House briefing room, during which she defended President Trump’s decision to not invite the Democratic Party governors.
«I just spoke with the president about this. It is a dinner at the White House. It’s the people’s house. It’s also the president’s home, and so he can invite whomever he wants to dinners and events here at the White House,» Leavitt told reporters from the White House briefing room Tuesday.

She added that Gov. Moore had been invited the previous year, but never ended up coming. «Nobody reported on it. But, again, the president has the discretion to invite whomever he wants to the White House, and he welcomes all those who received an invitation to come and if they don’t want to that’s their loss.»
During an appearance on CNN’s «State of the Union,» Moore suggested his lack of an invite was due to race, telling the show it was «not lost» on him that he is the only black governor in the country and the president was trying to deny him attendance at an organization’s event that Moore said his fellow Democrat governors have said they would like to see him lead. Moore also pointed to the fact he led a delegation of governors to the White House several weeks ago.

In a statement, Brandon Tatum, CEO of the National Governors Association, said he was «disappointed in the administration’s decision.»

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, a Republican who is the chairman of the NGA, said in a Monday letter to fellow governors that the association was «no longer serving as the facilitator» for the upcoming event, according to The Associated Press. Stitt said the NGA was meant to represent all governors — those of the 50 states as well as the governors of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Los therians llegaron a Uruguay y un centenar se reunió en Montevideo: “Desde chico me identifico como mono”
Uruguay se sumó a la tendencia de los nuevos personajes conocidos como therians. Son personas que aseguran sentirse animales y adoptan comportamientos en la vida cotidiana. En la tarde del martes, cientos de ellos se dieron cita en Montevideo y colmaron la Plaza Independencia con máscaras de animales que cubrían sus rostros y otros accesorios.
Un centenar de jóvenes, en su mayoría adolescentes, se encontraron en ese punto céntrico de la capital uruguaya, de acuerdo a la crónica del noticiero Telemundo de Canal 12. La idea en Uruguay surgió de una joven llamada Manuela, que vio la tendencia internacional y decidió replicarla en Uruguay. En un video de Tik Tok planteó su curiosidad, propuso reunirse y su posteo se viralizó. Y el encuentro se hizo realidad.
Francesca, una joven que participó del encuentro, contó que su familia se tomó “bastante bien” la decisión porque no es “muy prejuiciosa”. “Yo soy un humano normal, me comporto como humano. Es espiritualmente que yo me siento conectada”.
“En mi caso me identifico solo con el mono. Desde chico siempre me gustó estar abajo de los árboles, comer banana, caminar de esta forma”, relató otro de ellos en la televisión uruguaya.
Uno de los jóvenes detalló que no están todo el tiempo vestidos de esa manera porque se haría imposible la vida en sociedad. Entonces, es una vestimenta que queda para los ratos libres. Aclaró, sin embargo, que no pueden replicar todas las conductas: “No podemos c… en la calle, por ejemplo, ni tener sexo en la calle como haría un gorila salvaje”.
Otra de las jóvenes relató que es un “politherian”: “Es un therian que tiene más de un theritipo, por lo que me identifico con más de un animal. Ser therian no se puede elegir porque es una conexión. He visto muchos therians que dicen: ‘Uh, me gusta ser therian, voy a serlo’. Si querés hacerlo está bien, pero no es lo recomendado”, señaló la adolescente.
“El término therian es sentir una conexión con el animal. Sentís que pertenecés a esa vida”, señaló.
Algunos de los participantes señalaron que durante la mayor parte del día se comportan como seres humanos normales.
Consultada en Telemundo, otra adolescente contó que “desde siempre” fue una therian. “Empecé sintiéndome sola, haciéndome máscaras. Las intentaba vender, pero nadie me las compraba. Nadie sabía lo que era. Entonces, en un momento descubrí lo que era la comunidad therian y ahí empecé a juntarme más, a conocer gente, incluso a enseñar a gente a saltar y caminar. Ahí empezó todo”, describió.
La joven luego remarcó: “¡Los therians no están locos! Los therians sienten alguna conexión con un animal”.
Enzo, uno de los therian que estaba en la juntada, relató a Canal 5 que hay distintas categorías de therian. Una de ellas se denomina “otra pata” y consiste simplemente en utilizar la máscara, la cola y los guantes. Ellos, según el joven, siguen una “moda” y utilizan la máscara por “estética”.
Otro segundo nivel se llama “otro corazón”, pensado para quienes se identifican “espiritualmente” con un animal. El tercer nivel es propiamente ser un therian, para quienes se identifican completamente. Puede ser porque la persona siente que “en otra vida” fue un animal, relató el joven.
“En mi caso, me identifico como un perro. Un perro así nomás. ¿Por qué? Porque considero que tengo la personalidad de un perro. Soy muy leal, muy fiel”, comentó.
Muchos llegaron hasta la Plaza Independencia solo por curiosidad y observaron cómo los jóvenes saltaban y exhibían otras destrezas que los identificaba con un animal.
El senador opositor Sebastián Da Silva se sumó a la tendencia. En la red social X bromeó en una repuesta a un usuario: “Me hice therian así cambiás un poco la obsesión”.

La realización de Morir en guerra ajena, el documental de TN sobre soldados argentinos que combaten en Ucrania contra Rusia, estuvo atravesada desde el inicio por una certeza: cubrir una guerra desde adentro implica asumir riesgos permanentes, incluso cuando se cumplen todos los protocolos.
Meses de preparación, diálogo con los entrevistados, gestiones con autoridades, pedidos de permisos y acreditaciones, consultas sobre hojas de ruta y planes de contingencia no alcanzan para garantizar seguridad plena en un conflicto activo, de alta intensidad y con un uso extendido de drones y misiles.

El equipo de TN viajó a Ucrania en septiembre del año pasado, cuando la invasión rusa a gran escala estaba próxima a cumplir cuatro años. Allí se encontraron con un país de contrastes marcados. Por un lado, la vida cotidiana en la capital y en las ciudades alejadas del frente, donde durante el día se mantiene una relativa normalidad que se interrumpe al caer la noche con el toque de queda y el sonido de las sirenas antiaéreas ante ataques con drones o misiles. Por el otro, la realidad del frente de batalla: pueblos arrasados, destruidos, sin civiles, donde la única presencia humana es la militar. En esas zonas, incluso a 20 o 30 kilómetros de la llamada “línea cero” (la línea de combate), el riesgo es constante. “Uno está a tiro de recibir el impacto o la amenaza de drones”, relatan los propios militares, que instruyen a quienes llegan sobre protocolos básicos de supervivencia. Entre ellos, cómo evacuar ante la aparición de un dron: si un dron kamikaze se dirige a un vehículo, todos los ocupantes deben bajar y correr en direcciones distintas para reducir las probabilidades de impacto. Se trata además de regiones totalmente minadas, donde la ocupación rusa y la posterior recuperación por parte de Ucrania dejaron un escenario devastado: casas destruidas, rutas inexistentes, puentes caídos, tendidos eléctricos rotos.
En ese contexto, la comunicación también se vuelve un problema de seguridad. Los celulares, en la mayoría de los casos, no funcionan, y mucho menos los de origen extranjero. Según explican en el terreno, drones rusos de vigilancia y monitoreo buscan captar señales para tareas de inteligencia y para dirigir ataques más precisos, además de identificar líneas internacionales, como las argentinas. Por ese motivo, los nuevos reclutados deben mantener los teléfonos apagados, retirar los chips con los que llegaron desde la Argentina y conectarse, si es necesario, a antenas Starlink o directamente adquirir equipos nuevos.

La fragilidad de cualquier decisión quedó expuesta durante la propia grabación. El equipo de TN tenía previsto pasar una noche con nuevos soldados en una zona ubicada a unos 40 o 50 kilómetros de la línea de combate, en un campamento donde vivían cientos de militares recién llegados a Ucrania. Por cuestiones logísticas y por el riesgo de movilizarse hacia puntos que eran atacados de manera constante, se decidió adelantar un día la visita.
En ese campamento, las condiciones de vida reflejan la lógica de la guerra. Durante la noche, las casas y los espacios donde duermen los voluntarios están completamente tapiados para evitar que se filtre cualquier línea de luz hacia el exterior. No hay contacto con el mundo de afuera. No se puede orinar en los árboles, ante la falta de baños, porque la acumulación de orina puede ser detectada por drones con sensores infrarrojos que identifican el calor. La rutina se limita a armas, entrenamiento, fusiles AK-47 y la vida mínima de un campamento en el corazón del conflicto.

Esa decisión de adelantar la grabación fue determinante. A la mañana siguiente, pocas horas después de que el equipo de TN se retirara del lugar, un dron de fabricación iraní impactó durante el proceso de formación. Murieron nueve colombianos. Un argentino perdió un ojo y estuvo a punto de perder una pierna. Otros dos argentinos quedaron internados en grave estado, con quemaduras y riesgo de amputaciones. Fue una demostración brutal de que en una guerra de estas características la seguridad absoluta no existe y lo que parece seguro en un instante puede dejar de serlo al siguiente.
El documental también expone el cambio que atraviesan los combatientes. Los nuevos soldados reclutados en la zona del frente no eran los mismos que el equipo había conocido en la Argentina, en la comodidad de sus casas o barrios, en Buenos Aires o en sus provincias de origen. Antes de viajar se sentían confiados, convencidos de estar preparados para enfrentar lo que imaginaban como una guerra. Pero en el frente, cuando se escucha el zumbido de los drones y se empuñan los fusiles de los que depende la supervivencia, los rostros cambian. Aparecen las dudas, aunque la convicción inicial persiste, al menos hasta que llega el ataque.

Después del impacto del dron, muchos de los soldados con los que convivieron los periodistas advirtieron que no estaban preparados para esa situación extrema, para la sensación cotidiana de que la muerte acompaña cada movimiento. La rutina previa (levantarse ordenados, tomar mate, comer lo que ofrece el batallón, entrenar) quedó quebrada. La mayoría comenzó a pedir la baja, a reclamar que no tenían sus pasaportes y que no podían salir de Ucrania. Algunos lograron hacerlo; otros continuaron en servicio.
Morir en guerra ajena muestra así las dos caras de una misma realidad: la conciencia brutal que surge al ser testigo directo de la muerte y la inconsciencia previa con la que, a miles de kilómetros de distancia, desde el living de una casa, se planea ir a poner en juego la vida (o perderla) en un conflicto ajeno.
