Texas honeymooners trapped in Jamaica as Category 5 Hurricane Melissa slams island

What began as a dream honeymoon has turned into a terrifying ordeal for Texas newlyweds Kasydee and Hunter Bishop, who are stranded in Jamaica as Category 5 storm Hurricane Melissa barrels toward the island, according to Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Melissa is forecast to become the strongest hurricane in Jamaica’s history with sustained winds of 175 mph. Officials are warning of life-threatening flash flooding, landslides and widespread damage to nearby regions. Residents and visitors alike are being urged to take emergency precautions as the storm approaches.
The Bishops, who are staying in Montego Bay on the island’s northwest coast, arrived just before evacuation orders were issued, Fox 4 reported. Since then, the airport has been boarded up and all outgoing flights canceled, leaving many tourists stranded as the hurricane bears down, the station added.
«All we are hearing is how intense the storm is going to be, and we just really have no idea what to expect right now,» Hunter said, according to the local station.

Kasydee added that she had been praying for the hurricane to not disrupt the airport and keep them from returning home. However, the couple has since moved to a shelter as the storm moves across the country.
«We feel pretty safe here at least!!» she said in a post on TikTok Monday, adding that she feels very blessed to have a place to stay. «Just praying non stop for the protection of and and everyone here!!!»

As Melissa pushes northeast, Cuba and surrounding nations are bracing for heavy rain, flooding, storm surges and damaging winds. Areas outside the storm’s direct path are also expected to experience severe weather.

The last time Jamaica faced a hurricane of a similar magnitude was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988, a Category 4 storm remembered as the deadliest and most destructive in the nation’s history. The storm left hundreds homeless and forced thousands into overcrowded emergency shelters, according to a report from the National Library of Jamaica. Despite its ferocity, the official death toll remained relatively low with 45 fatalities and few reported injuries, but the storm caused an estimated $800 million in damage across the island, the publication said.

Se derrumbó parte de una torre medieval en Roma durante una restauración y murió un obrero
Una jornada de angustia y desesperación sacudió el corazón de Roma este lunes, cuando parte de la histórica Torre dei Conti colapsó durante trabajos de restauración y dejó a varios obreros atrapados bajo toneladas de escombros.
El operativo de rescate se extendió por más de 11 horas y mantuvo en vilo a toda la ciudad. Finalmente, los bomberos lograron sacar con vida a Octav Stroici, un trabajador rumano que había quedado debajo. Sin embargo, la alegría duró poco: el hombre no resistió las heridas y murió poco después de un paro cardiorrespiratorio en el hospital. “Se hicieron intentos de reanimación durante más de una hora”, informó el hospital Umberto I a la agencia noticiosa italiana Ansa.

Un rescate dramático y una muerte que conmocionó a Italia
La primera ministra italiana, Giorgia Meloni, expresó su “profundo dolor y condolencias” a la familia y compañeros de Stroici. “Estamos cerca de su familia y colegas en este momento de sufrimiento indescriptible”, afirmó en un comunicado difundido pasada la medianoche.
El Ministerio de Exteriores de Rumania confirmó la identidad de la víctima y agradeció la determinación de los rescatistas, que trabajaron sin descanso para liberar al obrero. El rescate fue una verdadera odisea. Los bomberos intentaron acercarse al hombre atrapado a través de una ventana del primer piso, pero debieron retirarse cuando la estructura siguió cediendo y una nube de escombros los obligó a retroceder. Un segundo intento con escaleras también fracasó, y finalmente recurrieron a un dron y a una grúa con tubos gigantes para succionar los restos desde el segundo piso.
Recién entrada la noche, un grupo de rescatistas logró cargar a Stroici en una escalera telescópica y bajarlo en camilla hasta la ambulancia. “La operación duró mucho tiempo porque cada vez que se liberaba una parte del cuerpo, quedaba cubierta por más escombros”, explicó Lamberto Giannini, prefecto de Roma.
El colapso de la Torre dei Conti: qué pasó y cómo fue el operativo
El derrumbe ocurrió al mediodía, cuando la torre —construida en el siglo XIII por orden del papa Inocencio III— sufrió el colapso de su contrafuerte central y parte de la base inclinada. Tres obreros lograron salir ilesos y otro, de 64 años, fue hospitalizado en estado crítico, aunque consciente.
El alcalde de Roma, Roberto Gualtieri, contó que Stroici se comunicaba con los rescatistas y usaba una mascarilla de oxígeno mientras intentaban liberarlo. “Fue una operación muy delicada para evitar nuevos derrumbes”, detalló. Cientos de turistas y curiosos presenciaron la dramática escena desde la calle. “Estaba trabajando cuando escuché algo que caía, y luego vi la torre colapsar de manera diagonal”, relató Queen Paglinawan, empleada de una heladería cercana.

Restauración millonaria y una investigación por posible negligencia
La Torre dei Conti estaba cerrada desde 2007 y atravesaba una restauración valuada en 6,9 millones de euros, que incluía trabajos de conservación, nuevas instalaciones eléctricas y de agua, y la creación de un museo. El tramo de obra donde ocurrió el accidente, presupuestado en 400.000 euros, estaba casi terminado.
Según las autoridades, antes de iniciar la última fase en junio, se realizaron estudios estructurales y pruebas de carga que confirmaron la estabilidad de la torre. Sin embargo, tras el derrumbe, fiscales italianos se presentaron en el lugar y abrieron una investigación por posibles cargos de negligencia y lesiones.
El dolor de la comunidad y el recuerdo de una víctima
El presidente rumano, Nicusor Dan, lamentó la muerte de Stroici y envió sus condolencias a la familia. “Profunda tristeza”, escribió en sus redes sociales.

Hamas hands over another Israeli hostage’s remains as Gaza ceasefire exchanges continue

Hamas handed over another coffin with the remains of an Israeli hostage to the Red Cross, who in turn delivered the body to Israeli officials, the Israeli military said on Tuesday.
The Red Cross brought the coffin to Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed. The remains are set to be transferred into Israel, where a military rabbi will perform a military ceremony, Netanyahu’s office added.
Following the ceremony, the National Center of Forensic Medicine will conduct an identification process, and then the hostage’s family will receive notification.
Hamas earlier said that it found the body of an Israeli soldier who had been held hostage in Gaza, Reuters reported. Hamas said the body was found in Shejaia, an eastern suburb of Gaza City in an area still occupied by Israeli forces, after Israel granted access to the location for teams from Hamas and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Trump says SNAP benefits will only resume when ‘Radical Left Democrats’ open government

The nation’s largest food aid program will only resume in full when «Radical Left Democrats» open the government, President Donald Trump wrote Tuesday on social media.
Trump posted about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on his Truth Social platform, saying that the benefits, meant to be a lifeline for low-income households, were given out too freely under former President Joe Biden, sending costs skyrocketing.
«SNAP BENEFITS, which increased by Billions and Billions of Dollars (MANY FOLD!) during Crooked Joe Biden’s disastrous term in office (Due to the fact that they were haphazardly ‘handed’ to anyone for the asking, as opposed to just those in need, which is the purpose of SNAP!), will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before!» the president’s post read.
Trump’s post comes as funding for the program was set to expire over the weekend as the government shutdown entered its second month.

On Monday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., signaled that the expiration of funding may not be enough to persuade Democrats to end the government shutdown.
When asked if Democrats voting for the GOP federal funding bill would be the most prudent way to fix that, he said, «No.»

The Trump administration told a federal judge on Monday that it will partially resume SNAP benefits for the month of November despite the ongoing government shutdown, though when the payments will be distributed — and how much beneficiaries will receive — remains to be seen.

A senior Trump administration official told the court in a sworn declaration that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will allocate $4.65 billion of its $5 billion contingency fund to keep the SNAP program funded for the month of November.
SNAP supports more than 40 million Americans and has come under recent attention over how expansive the program has become and to the administration’s push to ensure illegal immigrants aren’t among its recipients.

The program was among the first that Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins targeted for review, citing concerns about eligibility and oversight.
Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., recently pushed new legislation seeking special funding for farmers and food assistance programs amid the government shutdown. The legislation would reinstate federal funding for the Farm Service Agency and SNAP.

«We need to start forcing Democrats to make some tough votes. We need to start holding their feet to the fire,» Hawley said in an interview with Fox News Digital last month. «I mean, do they really not want people to be able to eat? This situation is ridiculous.»
