With federal election looming, Liberal Canadian PM accused of plagiarism while studying at Oxford: report

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is facing allegations that he copied parts of his 1995 doctoral thesis at Oxford University without proper credit. The report comes as he’s seeking election to remain the country’s PM next month, when Canadian voters head to the polls on April 28.
The National Post reviewed Carney’s thesis, «The Dynamic Advantage of Competition,» with three university experts, who found at least 10 instances of apparent plagiarism.
The experts told the National Post that Carney copied full quotes, paraphrased ideas, and slightly modified sentences from four different sources without giving proper credit.
CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER MARK CARNEY SAYS ‘OLD RELATIONSHIP’ WITH US ‘IS OVER’ AMID TENSION OVER TRUMP TARIFFS
«He’s just directly repeating without quotations. That’s plagiarism,» said Geoffrey Sigalet, a professor at the University of British Columbia who helps handle academic misconduct cases, told the National Post.
Carney’s campaign responded to the National Post with a statement from his former Oxford supervisor, Margaret Meyer, who dismissed the allegations. «I see no evidence of plagiarism in the thesis,» she said. «Mark’s work was thoroughly researched and approved by a faculty committee.»

Meyer also told the National Post that «it is typical that overlapping language appears» if sources are regularly referenced.
Oxford University defines plagiarism as «presenting work or ideas from another source as your own without full acknowledgment.» Another professor, speaking anonymously to the National Post, said Carney’s thesis appears to meet that definition.
Carney’s campaign spokesperson, Isabella Orozco-Madison, called the accusations an «irresponsible mischaracterization» of his work.
CANADA’S NEW PM AND TRUMP CRITIC MARK CARNEY ACCUSED OF BEING OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE ‘COMMON MAN’
One of the key examples from the National Post’s report shows Carney closely copying a passage from economist Michael E. Porter’s 1990 book, «The Competitive Advantage of Nations.» On page 206 of his thesis, Carney wrote: «First, government intervention can impede international competition and artificially support domestic profits.» This is nearly identical to Porter’s original wording.

Carney also reportedly copied sections from Jeremy C. Stein’s 1989 article in The Quarterly Journal of Economics and H.S. Shin’s 1994 article in The RAND Journal of Economics, with only minor wording changes.
The possible plagiarism appears throughout the thesis. «It’s all over the dissertation, not just one part,» said Sigalet. Even small wording changes without proper citation are still considered plagiarism.
Oxford University warns that plagiarism is a serious offense that can lead to penalties, including expulsion. «Even when you reword something, you still need to cite the source,» Sigalet added.
Carney, a former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor, has had a high-profile career, including top roles at Goldman Sachs and Brookfield Asset Management. He has faced criticism for his elite background and globalist tendencies.

However, plagiarism allegations have led to resignations and revoked degrees for politicians and academics in the past.
Last year, Harvard University’s president Claudine Gay stepped down amid plagiarism claims, though she denied wrongdoing.

Harris literally threw ‘JOE BIDEN WON’ talking points on table after disastrous debate: ‘Are you kidding me?’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Kamala Harris, when she was serving as vice president, rejected the Biden campaign’s pressure to celebrate the then-president as the winner of his disastrous debate against Donald Trump, saying she didn’t want to be fed «bulsh–t,» she reported in her new memoir.
«‘JOE BIDEN WON»—all caps, highlighted. ‘He fought through his cold as he is fighting for the American people,’» a sheet of paper containing favorable talking points after then-President Joe Biden’s poor performance on the debate stage, according to Harris’ latest memoir, «107 Days.»
Biden’s poor debate performance against Trump in June 2024 served as the death knell to the campaign that already was coping with mounting public concern that Biden’s mental acuity had cratered and he was unable to serve a second term. Despite the abject failure of a debate performance, Biden’s campaign wanted Harris to deliver favorable assessments of the debate to the American people, according to her book.
«Are you kidding me?» she said ran through her mind as she read the sheet of paper declaring Biden the winner of the night.

She threw the paper back on the table before fielding a call from Biden’s team outlining she was expected to say more of the same as the talking points when joining media interviews.
«No. Don’t feed me bulls–t. Everyone saw what they saw,» Harris continued in the book of what she thought during the call.
The then-vice president said the disastrous debate was littered with Biden missing opportunities to attack Trump, stumbling over his words and losing his train of thought.
KAMALA HARRIS HAD PROFANE MESSAGE FOR GOVERNORS UNEASY ABOUT SUPPORTING BIDEN
«Trump, meanwhile, was using his words like a weapon, but shooting before he aimed, spouting lies, unburdened by the truth,» she wrote. «Biden, striving for accuracy, often stopped midsentence to correct himself, which left him sounding hesitant and garbled. I knew the important policy points he was struggling to convey, and I knew he knew them. He is a master of this material, but that was not coming across at all.»

The Biden campaign suffered a devastating gut punch when Biden delivered a bizarre line on Medicare.
«And then, at the end of a string of convoluted sentences in which he twice confused millions and billions, Joe lost his train of thought entirely, looked disoriented, and blurted out, ‘We finally beat Medicare,’» Harris wrote in her scathing critique of the debate.
«Trump’s reply: ‘Well, he’s right. He did beat Medicare. He beat it to death,’» Harris continued.
FLASHBACK: THE DEBATE NIGHT AGAINST TRUMP THAT THREW BIDEN’S REELECTION CAMPAIGN INTO A FREE FALL
The former vice president described that campaign staffers were tracking reactions to the debate online, with the vast majority describing Biden’s performance as «disaster,» «train wreck» and «embarrassment,» she wrote.
Harris’ husband, attorney Doug Emhoff, faced his own outrage over Biden’s debate performance when left-wing Hollywood director Rob Reiner «screamed» at him during a watch party that democracy was about to be squandered over Biden’s performance.

«Doug, at a watch party with Hollywood donors, was getting an earful. Rob Reiner had screamed at him: ‘We’re going to lose our f—ing democracy and it’s your fault!’» Harris wrote.
As Harris prepared to join CNN in a post-debate interview that was all but guaranteed to focus on Biden’s disastrous performance, she reflected on a joke about a cheating husband, she wrote.
ONE YEAR LATER: HOW JOE BIDEN’S DISASTROUS DEBATE PERFORMANCE FORCED HIS MEDIA ALLIES TO TURN ON HIM
«I couldn’t help but think of the Richard Pryor joke where his wife catches him in bed with another woman. ‘You gonna believe me or your lyin’ eyes?’ he says,» Harris wrote.
Harris said she would not tell voters «that their eyes had lied,» and instead pivoted her talking points to «Trump’s numerous lies.»

«Listen, people can debate on style points, but ultimately this election and who is the president of the United States has to be about substance,» she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper in the post-debate interview. «Donald Trump lied over and over and over again, as he is wont to do. He would not disavow what happened on January 6. He would not give a clear answer on whether he would stand by the election results this November. He went back and forth about where he stands on one of the most critical issues of freedom in America, which is the right of women to make decisions about their own body.»

Trump: Erdogan could be ‘influential’ in ending Putin’s war by ending oil sales ‘if he wants’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
President Donald Trump on Thursday said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan could prove hugely influential in ending Russia’s war in Ukraine «if he wants to.»
Trump, who in recent weeks has increasingly demanded that NATO allies cease all Russian oil purchases to block funding for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war chest, set his sights on Erdoğan while speaking to reporters from the Oval Office.
«I think he could have a big influence if he wants to,» Trump said while sitting next to Erdoğan. «Right now, he’s very neutral. He likes being neutral. So do I, like being neutral.»

«But he’s somebody that if he got involved, the best thing he could do is not buy oil and gas from Russia,» Trump added.
The president told reporters the two main issues he planned to discuss with the Turkish leader were «war» and «trade.»
«I’d like to have him stop buying any oil from Russia. While Russia continues this rampage against Ukraine,» Trump said. «Disgraceful.»
«Putin ought to stop,» he added.

Erdoğan said he plans to discuss the sale of U.S. F-35s to Turkey, which during Trump’s first term, the U.S. barred Ankara from obtaining after it also purchased a Russian air defense system over concerns that Moscow could get its hands on the U.S. technology.
Trump on Thursday did not say if he would agree to lift the ban or use it to negotiate an end to Turkish imports of Russian oil. Ankara is Russia’s third-largest importer, behind India and China.
But while India has already had secondary tariffs slapped on it, and negotiations with China remain ongoing, Turkey has so far escaped Trump’s secondary tariff threats — though Trump said tariffs would also be on the day’s agenda.

Trump on Thursday said the U.S. and Turkey are «in great shape» when it comes to securing a possible deal on F-16 fighter jets, but did not indicate if that extended to F-35s as well.
«We’re talking about that very seriously,» Trump said. «He needs certain things, and we need certain things, and we’re going to come to a conclusion by the end of the day.»
