‘Can I finish?’: Sotomayor spars with Alito during LGBTQ classroom books case
Justices Samuel Alito and Sonia Sotomayor snapped at each other during Tuesday’s arguments over parental rights in LGBTQ curriculum after the liberal justice attempted to jump back into the questioning as Alito was speaking.
The short quarrel happened as the high court listened to arguments in Mahmoud v. Taylor, in which a coalition of parents sought to solidify the right to be informed about and opt their children out of reading LGBTQ-related material in elementary schools — which they argue conflicts with their faith.
Sotomayor initially asked Mahmoud attorney Eric Baxter about a particular book titled «Uncle Bobby’s Wedding» that included a same-sex relationship storyline and whether exposure to same-sex relationships in children’s books could be considered coercion.

«Our parents would object to that,» Baxter responded.
Sotomayor continued with her line of questioning to further clarify Baxter’s objection to the books. Baxter stated, «Our objections would be even to reading books that violate our client’s religious beliefs.»
Alito then jumped in with additional questions related to the book.
«I’ve read that book as well as a lot of these other books,» Alito began. «Do you think it’s fair to say that all that is done in ‘Uncle Bobby’s Wedding’ is to expose children to the fact that there are men who marry other men?»
Baxter objected to Alito’s question. Alito then said that while the book «has a clear message and a lot of people think it’s a good message,» some with «traditional religious beliefs don’t agree with» it.
As Alito continued with his explanation, Sotomayor jumped in.
«What a minute. The reservation is—» Sotomayor began.

«Can I finish?» Alito said.
«It has a clear moral message, and it may be a good message. It’s just a message that a lot of religious people disagree with,» Alito finished.
As arguments wrapped, the Supreme Court appeared inclined to agree with the parents.

A coalition of Jewish, Christian and Muslim parents with elementary school children in Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland brought suit against the school board after it introduced new LGBTQ books into the curriculum as part of the district’s «inclusivity» initiative.
The curriculum change came after the state of Maryland enacted regulations seeking to promote «educational equity,» according to the petitioner’s brief filed with the high court.

The parents lost both at the district court and the appellate level. The Fourth Circuit held that the parents had not shown how the policy violated the First Amendment.
The case comes at a time when President Donald Trump and his administration have prioritized educational and DEI-related reform upon starting his second term. The Supreme Court has notably also heard oral arguments this past term in other religious liberty and gender-related suits.

The high court heard oral arguments earlier this month in a suit brought by a Wisconsin-based Catholic charity group’s bid for tax relief. The decision could alter the current eligibility requirements for religious tax exemptions.

Top Trump officials file charges against illegal immigrant after Fox News exposes early release plans
The Trump administration is filing federal charges after hearing that an illegal immigrant convicted of manslaughter is set to be released over six years early by the California state government.
Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano was driving drunk, high, and speeding at nearly 100mph on the 405 freeway in Orange County in November 2021, when he crashed into a car being driven by a young couple, 19-year-old’s Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin, which killed them both as they burned alive. In spring 2022, he was convicted of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
Fox News reported on Wednesday morning that Ortega-Anguiano will be released by California state government on July 19 after serving just 3.5 years of his 10-year sentence, and the families of the victims were informed of the early release on Easter Sunday.

«My office has filed a felony immigration charge against this defendant. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted for 8 USC 1326. If the State of California will not seek the full measure of justice against this individual, the [DOJ] will,» Bill Essayli, United States Attorney for the Central District of California, tweeted.
Attorney General Pam Bondi also weighed in following the exclusive Fox News report.
«This is absolutely unconscionable. What about Justice for these teens? What about the rights of their parents? [The DOJ] will work with ICE to make sure this illegal alien receives full punishment for his crimes,» Bondi tweeted.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has put out a detainer for his arrest following his likely release by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. However, California’s sanctuary policies led to questions about whether the state will end up complying with the detainer.

CDCR does typically cooperate with ICE detainers, but border czar Tom Homan swiftly said federal authorities would step in after his release.
«I will work with [Homeland Security] Secretary Noem on this case, and I guarantee you, if they don’t honor the detainer, we’ll have ICE agents outside that facility to take custody of this individual and deport him,» Homan said Wednesday on «America’s Newsroom.»

According to a notice reviewed by Fox News, he is set to be released to Garden Grove, a suburb in Orange County just south of Los Angeles.
«For safety and security reasons, CDCR cannot provide information on an incarcerated person’s release date or location in advance of their release. Incarcerated persons may earn credits for participating in rehabilitative programming, which may move their parole dates to an earlier date,» the department stated.

The families of the teens killed said they’re writing to the state to keep him locked up.
«It’s disgusting. You have two young, unbelievable future, productive American citizens killed for nothing and that illegal immigrant who already has been deported twice is going to be released again? For what? If even he is deported, he will come back,» Anatoly Varfolomeev, the father of Anya, told Fox News in an interview.
«I hope he’s going to stay in prison. I hope that he’s gonna get old in prison and I hope he’s getting kicked out from our country in the end,» Pavel Osokin, Nicholay’s father, said.
«Three years for killing two kids! It’s confusing to me. Why you give them 10 if they’re gonna spend five, and then three? Give them three in the beginning, at least we know what to expect. It’s sort of spitting in my face,» he said.

El funeral del papa Francisco: Roma se prepara con una gigantesca movilización de fuerzas de seguridad para recibir a una multitud y 170 mandatarios extranjeros
Roma se prepara a una populosa celebración y al más numeroso encuentro que se recuerda y que podría llegar a 170 gobernantes de los países del mundo, según dijo el ministro del Interior italiano, Matteo Piantedosi. El objetivo es rendir homenaje al Papa argentino Jorge Bergoglio de 88 años, que murió el lunes de un ACV tras doce años de pontificado por el que recibe tantas muestras de dolor y afecto que superan todas las expectativas.
Miles de personas se juntaron hoy en la Basílica de San Pedro y desfilaron frente al féretro abierto frente al Altar de la Confesión para dar el último saludo al Papa Francisco. Los fieles desfilaron rápidamente y se les indicó la salid. Algunos prefirieron dirigirse a los rincones para llorar y rezar en silencio.
Por la mañana una procesión que partió desde la Casa de Santa Marta, donde residía el Papa, recorrió por las callejuelas vaticanas unos 500 metros. Alrededor de cincuenta cardenales formaron parte del cortejo en el que participaron amigos y los principales colaboradores de Francisco. El grupo entró en la plaza de San Pedro por el Arco de las Campanas y se dirigió al ingreso de la basílica.
Se estima que entre 200 y 300 mil fieles, entre ellos muchos argentinos venidos de otros países europeos y desde nuestro país, estarán presentes el sábado cuando después de cerrar el féretro parta la caravana fúnebre hacia la basílica de Santa María la Mayor, donde el pontífice nacido en Flores será sepultado. Algunos especialistas creen que le cifra será superada.
El gobierno italiano ha puesto en marcha un Comité de Operaciones que coordina las operaciones de seguridad “más arduas que nunca” por la cantidad de gente en movimiento, sin que hasta ahora se haya registrado ningún hecho de violencia.
El jefe de la Protección Civil, Fabio Ciciliana dijo que “estamos analizando los flujos de gente por carretera, en tren, en barco y en tren, especialmente desde Argentina y otros países sudamericanos”.
Cientos de voluntarios de la muy bien organizada Protección Civil Italiana, especializados en los casos de catástrofes naturales, han sido convocados a Roma para que ayuden a mantener el orden, porque no bastan los miles de policías que están actuando.
El comisario Ciciliana dijo que “para encontrar otros casos así hay que remontarse al pasado y con números más bajos” de los que se esperan.
Según los especialistas de seguridad, el momento más delicado será el traslado el sábado del féretro del Papa desde la San Pedro a la basílica de San Pedro, donde será sepultado. “Hay que organizar bien el cortejo fúnebre porque serán muchos miles las personas que querrán el último adiós al Papa tan querido”.
Se están fortaleciendo las redes telefónicas y de datos, además del despliegue de seguridad que será necesario para la recepción de las delegaciones extranjeras.
El operativo militar que se despliega en estos casos sobre todo para garantizar los espacios aéreos de Roma, está también siendo reforzado. Incluso habrá drones para ser utilizados en las emergencias.

El maestro de las Celebraciones litúrgicas, Diego Ravelli, informó que el viernes a las 20 (las 15 en Argentina) el cardenal Kevin Farreell, Camarlengo de la Santa Iglesia Romana y administrador de ella durante la sede vacante, presidirá el rito de cierre del féretro del Papa en presencia de otros dignatarios.

El ministro del Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, dijo que ya está preparada la infraestructura para acoger a un máximo de 170 delegaciones extranjeras.
El ministro explicó que el cuadro de seguridad ha sido activado con mecanismos de nueva generación que incluyen un sistema de Tercera Dimensión para garantizar una visión de 360 grados de las áreas que rodean a la plaza de San Pedro.
El ministro del Interior dijo que “dada la gran participación que esperamos hemos decidido hacer público el recorrido del cortejo que irá el sábado desde San Pedro a la Basílicta de Santa María la Mayor, donde el Papa será sepultado.
También el río Tiber, cercano al Vaticano, será patrullado intensamente en estos días . Además habrá vigilancia especial en los barrios donde se alojarán las embajadas extranjeras. Especialmente el barrio Parioli, donde se encuentra Villa Taverna, residencia del embajador de EE.UU. en Italia, donde se alojará el presidente norteamericano Donald Trump.
