Le dijeron que su hija había muerto en un incendio, pero años después descubrió la verdad
Luz Cuevas vivió uno de los momentos que le cambiarían la vida para siempre. Su casa en Filadelfia, Estados Unidos, se incendió el 15 de diciembre de 1997 y, a pesar del humo y el caos, lo único que importaba era que su hija de apenas 10 días de vida estaba adentro.
Si bien intentó entrar a la habitación donde estaba la beba, se quemó las manos al tratar de abrir la puerta y se dio cuenta de que era demasiado tarde. Cuando los bomberos lograron controlar el fuego, no había rastros del cuerpo de la nena y la dieron por muerta.

La beba era Delimar Vera. Así la habían nombrado sus padres biológicos, Cuevas y su esposo, Pedro Vera. Sin embargo, nadie la llamó así durante los siguientes seis años por una escalofriante razón.
Un incendio misterioso y una sospecha
Luego del incendio que destruyó su casa, Cuevas nunca creyó en la versión oficial de las autoridades, ya que en la escena no había cenizas, restos humanos ni pruebas concretas de que su hija hubiera muerto. Solo era la hipótesis de que “no pudo haberse salvado”.
La trataron de negadora y como “una madre que no aceptaba la pérdida” al principio. Pero ella tenía la certeza de que su hija estaba viva.
Así vivió por mucho tiempo, hasta que seis años después, en enero de 2004, cuando Cuevas fue invitada a un cumpleaños en la casa de su excuñada. Poco antes de ese evento, ella se había separado de su esposo, pero aún mantenía una buena relación con la familia.
Sin embargo, en medio de la reunión, ocurrió algo inesperado, ya que entre juegos, música y comida, vio a una nena de seis años. Y algo en su interior se alarmó porque tenía un rasgo que era inevitable ignorar: sus hoyuelos. “Esa es mi hija”, pensó.
La niña era Aaliyah Hernández y estaba al cuidado de Carolyn Correa, quien afirmaba ser su madre. Por eso, en un momento de distracción, se acercó a la menor y le dijo que tenía un chicle en el pelo. “Sacámelo”, le respondió ella, y Cuevas le arrancó un mechón.

La búsqueda de la verdad
Cuevas movió cielo y tierra en busca de que alguien la ayudara a resolver su duda. Fue así cómo un legislador la escuchó y le facilitó el contacto de un fiscal que se involucró en el caso.
De esta manera, en febrero de 2004, Aaliyah fue sometida a un análisis de ADN y su resultado fue concluyente: durante seis años había vivido una mentira, ya que no había dudas de que era Delimar Vera.
Los investigadores reconstruyeron una historia que parece salida de una película (incluso lo fue en 2008, cuando el canal estadounidense Lifetime adaptó el caso para la pantalla chica). Correa, una prima lejana del padre de Delimar, se había presentado en la casa de la familia el día del incendio con la excusa de conocer a la recién nacida.
En ese momento, ella dijo que había estado embarazada, pero nadie sabía que eso no era real. Por eso, ese día, secuestró a la beba de 10 días y provocó el incendio para ocultarlo.
Después de la apropiación, Correa se mudó a poco más de 20 kilómetros, falsificó documentos, inscribió a Delimar como si fuera su hija biológica y la crió durante seis años. Correa fue detenida y acusada de secuestro. Un tribunal la declaró culpable y la condenó entre 9 y 30 años de prisión luego de llegar a un acuerdo con la fiscalía. La mujer ya cumplió con su condena y está en libertad.
Dos madres
El descubrimiento de la verdad no fue algo fácil de procesar para Delimar. No le gustaba su verdadero nombre, tenía nuevos hermanos y era difícil conectar con una familia desconocida. Delimar ahora tiene 27 años, está casada y vive junto a su familia en Filadelfia. (Foto: Instagram/@delimar_vera).
Incluso, en un momento, decidió vivir con su padre, pero -luego de una pelea con él- terminó en un hogar comunitario con tan solo 15 años. “Intenté adaptarme a los gestos de mi nueva familia para que pareciera que nunca me habían secuestrado, pero también estaba de luto por mi antigua familia. De chica sentía que tenía dos madres“, dijo en una entrevista.

Delimar fue a visitar a Correa a la cárcel y la cuestionó sobre lo que le había hecho: “Fue duro. Estaba muy enojada con ella. Pero no me pidió disculpas, solo dijo que nos volveríamos a ver. Eso fue todo, y sentí que era mi adiós”. A partir de ese día, nunca más la vio.
Hoy, Delimar tiene 27 años, está casada y vive junto a su esposo, Isaiah, y su hijastro de 11 años en Filadelfia.

Ex-Planned Parenthood director celebrates closure of Houston facilities: ‘Not shocking’

EXCLUSIVE: Former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned pro-life activist Abby Johnson said the organization’s announcement that two of its facilities in Houston, Texas, will be shutting down this fall represents a «symbolic victory» for the pro-life movement.
Johnson, who resigned in 2009, told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview that she believes the pro-life movement secured a key win with the facility closures, which includes a 78,000-square-foot clinic that was once the largest abortion facility in the Western Hemisphere before Texas’ abortion ban.
«I think it’s a victory, I think more than anything it’s certainly taking ground for the pro-life movement,» Johnson said. «As far as being a victory in saving babies, it’s more of a symbolic victory in that way, because women aren’t walking into that building to get abortions anymore. Abortions in the state of Texas are happening online.»
Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast — which runs six clinics in the Houston area and two in Louisiana — will close its Prevention Park and Southwest centers on Sept. 30, while the other Houston facilities will be acquired by the organization’s largest Texas affiliate.

Facilities in GOP-led states with abortion restrictions, including Texas, have been forced to cease procedures following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe V. Wade and returned power to make laws regarding abortion back to the states.
Johnson, who worked for eight years at a clinic in Bryan, Texas, that was run by Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, recalled the celebration among her former colleagues when plans for the Houston mega-facility were unveiled, although she resigned from the organization before it was opened in 2010.
«I was in the room on the day that they unveiled the plans. I was in the room on the day that they unveiled the model of that building. Everyone was so excited that we were going to have this 78,000-square-foot abortion facility,» Johnson said. «I remember the capacity that they were going to be able to see, the capacity of patients, the excitement of being able to perform 75 abortions every day, six days a week.»
«So the fact that this facility is no longer even going to be an option, even if surgical abortion was reinstated here in the state of Texas, that facility is no longer going to be operational,» she continued. «It’s no longer going to be able to be used as an abortion facility. That in itself is a victory.»
The company cited rising costs, staffing shortages and low reimbursement rates as the reasons for closing the two Houston facilities. State GOP officials in recent years have made repeated attempts to shut down Planned Parenthood even after nearly all abortions were banned under Texas law.
The closings in Houston come amid several closures of Planned Parenthood facilities in various states, including New York, where the organization is selling its only Manhattan health center building for $39 million.
Johnson, who now runs a pro-life ministry, said mergers were already happening when she worked for Planned Parenthood, including with the facility she worked for, and she expects mergers to continue as more facilities close across the country.
«When I first began working for Planned Parenthood, there were almost 100 affiliates. That number has more than halved since I left Planned Parenthood. Affiliates are merging, clinics are closing and they are losing staff. They’re having to lay off staff because of clinic closures and mergers,» she said, adding that «morale is low» and the work environment is not happy.

She said Planned Parenthood wanted to be the «big guy» and essentially close down independent abortion providers to create a monopoly, which she said seems like it will not end up happening.
«Many of the independent providers are closing as well. Planned Parenthood facilities are also closing at a very rapid rate,» she said.
Johnson also said she believes the shuttering of the facility is «incredibly demoralizing» and likely «humiliating» for Planned Parenthood and the pro-choice lobby.
«That was a trophy for Planned Parenthood to operate the largest Planned Parenthood in the country,» she said. «And for the largest Planned Parenthood to have to close, I think it’s incredibly demoralizing and probably humiliating for them as well.»
Addressing Planned Parenthood’s claim that abortions make up only 3% of its services, Johnson said that has been proven false given that facilities in states with abortion bans have had to close.
«Now we’re being proven right because all of these facilities that don’t provide abortions are being forced to shut down,» Johnson said. «Because abortion is an overwhelming part of what they do, so all of these clinics that do not do abortions are being forced to close.»
She said she was not shocked to see that the mega-facility was closing since it can no longer bring in money from performing abortions and can now only offer its other services.
«You’ve got a seven-story, 78,000-square-foot building that’s only doing birth control and STD testing. It’s not shocking that it closed down because you don’t have any significant revenue coming into the facility. There are no abortions going on. That’s their primary source of revenue,» she said.
Large facilities in some Democrat-led states are not experiencing the same setbacks because they are able to continue performing abortions and have money flowing in because of it, Johnson said.

«I think Texas, Louisiana, the southern states, we could have a unique opportunity here because we don’t have abortion,» she said. «We don’t have legal abortion here in the state and we don’t have state and federal money pouring into these facilities.»
She also noted that places, like California, allowing access to surgical abortion are completely overrun with patients who travel for the procedure since it is banned in GOP-led states.
Johnson emphasized that despite the victory in Houston, the pro-life movement still has a lot of work to do, pointing to data showing that abortion numbers in Texas have remained about the same since the state banned surgical abortions.
«Even though abortion is technically illegal in the state of Texas, women are having abortions at the same exact rate as it was when it was legal,» she said. «These women are going online, they’re getting abortions from online abortion providers.»
Abortion pills are «very easy to obtain,» she highlighted.

As New York City reels from a deadly mass shooting in midtown Manhattan that killed four, including an NYPD officer, the Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani is getting renewed attention for a recent pledge to eliminate a key police department responsible for riots, civil disorder and shootings.
Mamdani, who is currently in Uganda celebrating his wedding, has previously called to defund the police, though as a mayoral candidate, he has taken a much more subdued tone regarding policing.
However, while already a candidate for mayor, Mamdani pledged on X in December 2024 to «disband» the New York Police Department’s Strategic Response Group (SRG).
The SRG is one of the NYPD’s special operations units, which, according to the force’s official website, specializes in disorder response, crime suppression and crowd control and «responds to citywide mobilizations, civil disorders, and major events with highly trained personnel and specialized equipment.»

The website also says that SRG personnel are «also deployed to areas requiring an increased police presence due to increased crime or other conditions» and «mobilizes for shootings, bank robberies, missing persons, demonstrations, or other significant incidents.»
In December, Mamdani claimed that the NYPD had deployed the SRG to «harass + arrest striking @teamsters.»
Mamdani pledged: «As Mayor, I will disband the SRG, which has cost taxpayers millions in lawsuit settlements + brutalized countless New Yorkers exercising their first amendment rights.»
In response to the shooting, Mamdani has said, «I’m heartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting in midtown and I am holding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts.»

He also noted he is «grateful for all of our first responders on the ground.»
On Monday, a lone gunman, later identified as Shane Tamura, walked into a midtown Manhattan office building and opened fire, killing four people before turning the gun on himself.
The four people killed in the shooting were identified as NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner, security guard Aland Etienne and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but the gunman reportedly had a grievance with the NFL, blaming the sport of football for apparent issues with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a side effect from repeated hits to the head.

In response to the tragedy, Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for re-election as an independent, announced Tuesday that «as a mark of respect for the memory of NYPD Officer Didarul Islam who died in the line of duty and the multiple victims of the mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan at 345 Park Avenue yesterday, I’ve ordered all flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs throughout the five boroughs to be lowered to half-staff until further notice.»

«Officer Didarul Islam died as he lived, a hero and protector of New York City. We will never forget you,» Adams wrote in another post on X.
Fox News Digital reached out to Mamdani’s campaign for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
