La fila de buques en el Canal de Panamá cae de 127 a 56 en un mes
El Canal de Panamá registraba 56 buques pendientes de tránsito a las 9:47 a. m. del 24 de septiembre: 55 con reserva y uno sin cupo confirmado. El 25 de agosto, la cifra había llegado a 127 embarcaciones, de las cuales 109 tenían reserva y 18 no la habían obtenido, según los reportes de ambas fechas.
En un mes, el número total disminuyó en 71 barcos, equivalente a una reducción cercana al 56%. Entre quienes contaban con una fecha asignada, la cifra pasó de 109 a 55. La caída fue mayor entre las naves sin reserva, que bajaron de 18 a una en el tablero de la Autoridad del Canal de Panamá (ACP).
El desglose del 24 de septiembre muestra 15 buques con reserva para las esclusas neopanamax. En las esclusas panamax había otros 40 con cupo confirmado y una embarcación sin reserva. De esa forma, el grupo panamax sumaba 41 barcos y concentraba al único que esperaba sin una fecha de tránsito previamente asegurada.
Ese buque figuraba en la categoría Super, con rumbo hacia el norte, y acumulaba un día de espera. La tabla de embarcaciones sin reserva no registraba naves en dirección sur. A finales de agosto, en cambio, 14 barcos panamax y cuatro neopanamax carecían de cupo, según el balance publicado entonces.
También se redujo el tiempo de espera de los buques sin reserva. A comienzos de septiembre, el indicador para las embarcaciones que navegaban hacia el norte se acercó a 13 días. Para el 24 de septiembre había bajado a 1.3 días, casi 12 días menos. En dirección sur, el registro cerró en 0.0 días.
La diferencia entre ambos grupos es relevante para entender la fila. Los barcos con reserva tienen una fecha de tránsito asignada y pueden llegar a las entradas del Canal antes de ese momento. Los que arriban sin cupo dependen de los espacios que queden disponibles o de las subastas para asegurar su paso por la vía.
La congestión de agosto llevó a las navieras a competir con ofertas extraordinarias. Una empresa surcoreana ofreció $5.3 millones en una subasta para asegurar el tránsito de un buque gasero a comienzos de septiembre. Esos pagos surgieron de la puja por una fecha de cruce; no representaron un aumento del peaje establecido por el Canal.
La disminución de la fila podría reflejar también cambios en las rutas elegidas por las navieras tras la congestión de agosto y el anuncio de menos cupos diarios. S&P Global reportó que algunos graneleros ya estaban rodeando Sudamérica por el estrecho de Magallanes para evitar la espera.
Ese posible cambio de itinerarios coincide con una previsión de menos actividad para el año fiscal 2027. La Autoridad del Canal estima 10,750 tránsitos de alto calado, 1,265 menos que en 2025, año que utilizó como referencia porque 2026 aún no había cerrado. Su contralor financiero, David Seda, advirtió que las navieras pueden reorganizar sus servicios con anticipación si prevén restricciones prolongadas.
La reducción de la fila ocurrió mientras mejoraron las lluvias sobre la cuenca canalera. Después de cuatro meses consecutivos con precipitaciones inferiores al promedio histórico, los registros de los primeros 21 días de septiembre superaron esa referencia, explicó Ayax Murillo, gerente de Hidrología de la ACP.
El cambio comenzó durante la última semana de agosto y favoreció una recuperación progresiva de los embalses. Al 22 de septiembre, Gatún marcaba 84.53 pies y Alhajuela alcanzaba 241.17 pies. La disponibilidad de agua sigue siendo decisiva tanto para el consumo de la población como para programar los tránsitos.
Para conservarla, el Canal redujo primero su oferta a 34 cupos diarios y, desde el 15 de septiembre, estableció 32. La distribución vigente contempla nueve espacios neopanamax y 23 panamax. Tras evaluar las lluvias recientes, la ACP indicó que mantendría esos 32 cupos y que no preveía otra reducción inmediata.
Entre las prácticas de ahorro figura el esclusaje simultáneo de dos embarcaciones pequeñas, siempre que sus dimensiones permitan utilizar una misma cámara. Esa operación aprovecha el agua necesaria para el paso de más de un buque. La ACP también aplica otras medidas de conservación en las esclusas mientras sigue la evolución de la cuenca.
La situación de septiembre combina así una fila menor, menos barcos sin reserva y esperas más cortas para ese último grupo. La ACP continuará evaluando las precipitaciones de octubre y noviembre para acumular agua antes de la próxima estación seca, periodo que determinará cuántos tránsitos podrá sostener durante 2027.

Lluvias provocan inundaciones y deslizamientos y afectan a más de 30 familias en varios sectores de Honduras
Las lluvias intensas registradas durante la tarde y noche del miércoles provocaron inundaciones, desbordamientos y deslizamientos en diferentes sectores de los departamentos de Santa Bárbara y Yoro, dejando a más de 30 familias afectadas y obligando a las autoridades a desplegar equipos de emergencia.
El subcomisionado noroccidental de la Secretaría de Gestión de Riesgos y Contingencias Nacionales (Copeco), Alex Estévez, informó que las precipitaciones generaron diferentes incidentes, principalmente en el municipio de Quimistán, Santa Bárbara, donde varias zonas quedaron inundadas debido al incremento de las escorrentías provenientes de sectores montañosos.
De acuerdo con el reporte preliminar, en Quimistán el desbordamiento de una quebrada afectó directamente a 18 familias, mientras que en la zona urbana de Pinalejo alrededor de 10 barrios registraron acumulaciones de aguas lluvias, con al menos 15 viviendas afectadas.
Ante el incremento del nivel del agua, los Comités de Emergencia Municipal (CODEM) realizaron evacuaciones preventivas durante la noche y la madrugada para trasladar a las familias que se encontraban en las zonas de mayor riesgo.
Las autoridades habilitaron de manera provisional el mercado municipal de Quimistán como albergue, donde fueron trasladadas varias familias que tuvieron que abandonar sus viviendas debido a las inundaciones.
Hasta el momento, las instituciones de respuesta no cuentan con un consolidado actualizado de personas afectadas, debido a que continúan las labores de evaluación en las comunidades.
Se espera que durante las próximas horas se pueda establecer con mayor precisión el número de damnificados y los daños ocasionados por las lluvias.
El alcalde de Quimistán, Darío Pacheco, explicó que el Comité de Emergencia Municipal permaneció activo durante toda la noche y madrugada para coordinar las labores de respuesta y atender a las familias afectadas por el incremento del caudal y las inundaciones.
En las labores de atención participaron elementos del Tercer Batallón de Artillería, el Batallón Ambiental, el Cuerpo de Bomberos y personal de la municipalidad, quienes se desplazaron hacia los sectores donde se reportaron mayores acumulaciones de agua.
Los equipos realizaron trabajos de limpieza de drenajes, cunetas, calles y tragantes, además del retiro de escombros y otras labores destinadas a facilitar la circulación de las aguas lluvias.
Para estas tareas también se utilizó maquinaria pesada de la municipalidad y del Batallón de Ingenieros, lo que permitió despejar algunos puntos obstruidos y mejorar parcialmente el flujo del agua.
Las labores se extendieron durante la noche y la madrugada debido a que las precipitaciones provocaron nuevas acumulaciones en diferentes sectores del municipio.
El alcalde Darío Pacheco calificó el episodio como una inundación inusual, debido a la magnitud de las escorrentías generadas por las fuertes precipitaciones.
Según explicó el funcionario, la cantidad de agua que llegó desde las zonas montañosas superó la capacidad de los sistemas de drenaje existentes, provocando que varias calles y sectores urbanos quedaran bajo el agua.
El incremento de las corrientes también dificultó la capacidad de respuesta de los equipos locales, que tuvieron que concentrar sus esfuerzos en despejar los puntos donde los sistemas de evacuación de aguas lluvias quedaron sobrepasados.
Pacheco señaló además que el crecimiento urbano de Quimistán durante los últimos años representa un desafío para la infraestructura municipal, debido a que el aumento de las construcciones ha reducido las áreas naturales de absorción.
El alcalde explicó que los sistemas de drenaje pluvial no se han ampliado al mismo ritmo que el crecimiento de la población y las nuevas construcciones, una situación que puede incrementar las acumulaciones de agua durante episodios de precipitaciones intensas.
Uno de los principales incidentes se produjo por el desbordamiento de una quebrada, que afectó directamente a 18 familias en el municipio de Quimistán.
La fuerza y el volumen del agua provocaron acumulaciones en sectores habitados, lo que llevó a las autoridades a realizar evacuaciones preventivas para evitar que las familias permanecieran expuestas mientras se mantenían las lluvias.
En Pinalejo, aproximadamente 10 barrios también reportaron inundaciones ocasionadas por las aguas lluvias. Al menos 15 viviendas resultaron afectadas, según el informe preliminar proporcionado por las autoridades.
Los equipos de emergencia continuaron con las labores de limpieza y evaluación para determinar si existen daños adicionales en viviendas, calles, sistemas de drenaje y otras estructuras públicas.
La emergencia también alcanzó al departamento de Yoro, donde se reportó un deslizamiento en el sector de Chancaya.
Copeco coordina acciones para determinar si el paso permanece habilitado o si el movimiento de tierra provocó una obstrucción total o parcial de la vía.
Estévez explicó que todavía no se puede confirmar el nivel de afectación en ese punto debido a que las autoridades no cuentan con información suficiente ni fotografías actualizadas que permitan establecer la magnitud del deslizamiento.
Las autoridades también mantienen vigilancia sobre los sectores donde se registraron desbordamientos y acumulaciones de agua, particularmente en comunidades cercanas a quebradas y zonas montañosas.

Iranian president blames US for Middle East conflict while denying nuclear ambitions, offers to dilute uranium

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian flatly denied Thursday that Tehran wants a nuclear bomb while claiming Iran is willing to submit its nuclear program for international inspection, blaming Washington for the nearly seven-month war in the Middle East and accusing it of blocking diplomacy.
Asked point-blank during an exclusive interview on Fox News’ «Special Report,» «Do you want a nuclear bomb or not?» Pezeshkian firmly rejected the premise.
«Not at all. Not at all. Our martyred, esteemed supreme leader had announced several times that, from a religious decree, it is unholy. It is illegal,» he told Bret Baier, referencing religious edicts issued against weapons of mass destruction.

The Iranian leader’s public denial came amid long-term international scrutiny of Iran’s nuclear program and its enrichment of uranium to levels well beyond those typically used for civilian nuclear power.
This became President Donald Trump’s central rationale for launching Operation Epic Fury in February.
On Thursday, however, Pezeshkian indicated Tehran would be open to lowering its enrichment levels and allowing outside verification as part of an effort to ease nuclear tensions.
«So, that weapon’s mass destruction. We said we’re willing to dilute them. It’s not a big deal. We are willing to submit ourselves to verification,» he said.
Pezeshkian also pointed to the failed memorandum of understanding, or MOU, signed by him and President Donald Trump in June intended to halt hostilities and establish a framework for a broader U.S.-Iran agreement.
The process was intended by Washington to lead to an end to Iran’s nuclear ambitions and included a 60-day process toward that final agreement.
«We have no problems. We did reach an agreement with your president,» Pezeshkian said of Trump, who signed the agreement.
«That agreement was signed, and, based on that, we are willing and still wish to move forward.

«And the framework was agreed upon. We had not closed the Strait of Hormuz; it was open without any legal justification or framework,» he said.
«They attacked us. They assassinated and martyred our esteemed supreme leader, our scientists, our military commanders and government.»
Pezeshkian then criticized Washington for the subsequent breakdown in diplomacy but insisted Tehran remains prepared to reach an agreement.
«The problem is that America, instead of conducting dialog, they descend into the arena by bombing us first, by blocking every pathway. We are ready,» he said.
«This is not the way to conduct yourself on the world stage. They can have free access to see whatever we have, but not to put us under such pressure, under blockades, deny us access.»
Pezeshkian also placed broader blame on Washington for the war.
«We do not seek to kill Americans, as shown by actions, demonstrable actions. America has sought to kill Iranians,» Pezeshkian said. «What we know is that if we’re attacked, we must defend ourselves.»

Addressing U.S. military strikes — including Operation Outcast — and increasing secondary sanctions, Pezeshkian said Iran would continue resisting Washington’s campaign.
«This is something that has been the doing of the United States,» he said. «We will keep resisting. We will find ways, and the life of our country will continue. We will remain.
«Yes, we do have economic issues, certainly. But in order to remain, we will go through any hardship and endure.
«If America thinks that they can keep sanctioning us, we have nothing to do, nor do we consider any type of American elections. If the current American government, within international legal frameworks, wishes to reach an agreement, fine. If not, before the elections or after the elections, what difference does it make for us?»
Pezeshkian repeated that Iran does not want the war to continue, while blaming Israel for helping provoke the conflict and putting responsibility on Washington to bring it to an end.

«We will stand resolutely to defend ourselves. We never sought war. We do not seek war,» he said.
«I deeply believe that humans should not cause the death of another human. But with the instigations conducted by Israel, they have imposed this war on us.
«But we do not wish to continue. It’s America that must choose whether it wants to end this or not.»
The Iranian president also addressed reports that Iranian forces used Chinese satellite imagery to carry out a deadly strike on a U.S. base in Jordan. The attack resulted in the deaths of three U.S. service members.
When questioned about the reports, Pezeshkian denied direct knowledge.
«I’m specifically unaware of these purported images that you talk about,» Pezeshkian said.
«Now, what do militaries do with one another between two countries? It is their own business within their own guidelines.»

James Copenhaver, of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, who was wounded in a failed assassination attempt on President Donald Trump in 2024, has died, according to several reports.
Copenhaver, in his mid-70s, was one of several people who attempted assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at the Butler Farm Show complex outside Butler, Pennsylvania, after Crooks scaled the roof of a nearby glass manufacturing building and took aim at the then-presidential candidate.
A statement from the Copenhaver family provided to Digital confirmed his death Thursday afternoon, and noted the veteran’s «dedication to this great country.»
«It is with profound sadness that the Copenhaver family confirms that James Copenhaver passed away on September 23, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones,» the statement said.
«Above all else, James was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. James shared a lifetime of commitment to his wife, instilled the values of hard work, integrity, and the service of others in his children, and found some of his greatest joy in life in his grandchildren. His family was the center of his world, and he was the center of theirs.

The House Republican Conference posted an obituary for Copenhaver on social media, saying he had died Thursday and that lawmakers were «deeply saddened.»
«Jim endured unimaginable hardship with strength and perseverance. We join his family and loved ones in mourning his loss and praying for them during this difficult time. May he rest in peace,» the caucus said in a statement.
Ken Silva, a journalist who wrote a book about the assassination attempt, wrote on his website that a person close to Copenhaver’s family also confirmed Copenhaver had died and had been dealing with permanent injuries, including bullet fragments still lodged in his body.
David Dutch was also wounded in the shooting but survived. Butler County firefighter Corey Comperatore was shot and killed in the bleachers behind Trump’s dais that day.
Speaking to Pittsburgh’s KDKA in 2025, Copenhaver said he stood to look at the jumbotron behind him as Trump spoke.

«Next thing I know, my sleeve has been yanked,» he said. «I could see a portion of it going by pretty fast, and I heard ‘pew.’ I heard it, and I didn’t realize at the time that I had gotten shot.»
He said he was then shot a second time but that the bullets both «went into soft material.»
«It was like a jolt. It didn’t knock me over, but I didn’t want to stand anymore,» he told the station.
A lawsuit Copenhaver filed against the United States earlier this year alleged he was also required to undergo multiple surgeries.
Mayor Jondavid Longo of nearby Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania — who spoke at the Butler rally — mourned Copenhaver’s reported death Thursday.

«[Copenhaver] survived that day, but he never fully recovered from the wounds. For two years he lived with surgeries, remaining fragments, and pain that never left him. Those of us who were there that day have never forgotten Corey Comperatore, David Dutch, or Jim,» Longo said in a statement on X.
«Butler County still carries that afternoon. May he rest in peace. Prayers for Marianne and the Copenhaver family.»
The attack triggered intense scrutiny of the Secret Service after investigations uncovered breakdowns in planning, communication and security around the rally site. Then-Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned less than two weeks later, taking responsibility for the security lapse. A subsequent bipartisan House task force concluded the Butler attack was preventable and identified failures in planning, execution and leadership.

One of the Republican lawmakers on that task force, Rep. Carlos Gimenez of Florida, climbed onto the roof Crooks used to take aim at Trump and later told Digital he was incredulous at how easy it was to scale after Cheatle had cited the roof’s slope in explaining why it was not secured.

Six Secret Service agents were later suspended without pay in connection with the failures.
Trump returned to Butler in October 2024, less than three months after the assassination attempt, to hold another rally at the same site and honor Comperatore.
Trump’s raised fist and mouthing of the word «fight» became a lasting image of the assassination attempt that he used throughout his successful campaign to become the first president since Grover Cleveland to serve two nonconsecutive terms.
