Fue un criminal nazi, escapó a Sudamérica y se convirtió en socio de Pablo Escobar: Klaus Barbie, el “Carnicero de Lyon”
Persiguió y asesinó a los judíos holandeses: a muchos les tiró encima perros salvajes mientras él disfrutaba del espectáculo macabro. Después se convirtió en el jefe de la Gestapo de Lyon durante la ocupación nazi a Francia. Muy rápido se ganó el apodo de El Carnicero de Lyon: torturó y asesinó a miles; entre ellos los 44 niños del Hogar de Izieu que envió a morir a los campos de concentración. Asesinó a Jean Moulin, líder de la Resistencia Francesa. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial logró escapar a través de la Ruta de las Ratas. Pasó por la Argentina y se radicó en Bolivia. Allí, con nombre falso, como Klaus Alltman dirigió empresas, mutó en importante traficante de armas, diseñó golpes de estado y fue clave en el establecimiento del narcotráfico en Bolivia; uno de sus socios comerciales fue Pablo Escobar Gaviria. Durante cuarenta años cometió atrocidades y se mantuvo olímpicamente impune hasta que la resistencia de un matrimonio de cazadores de nazis logró que fuera deportado y juzgado en Francia.
Klaus Barbie fue, en la escala jerárquica, un nazi de segundo orden. No era uno de los que diseñaron las políticas de exterminio o que las coordinaron. Sin embargo su ferocidad y sadismo lo hizo distinguirse del resto. Fue responsable de mucho daño y dolor. Fue un criminal de guerra.
Tras un paso por Ámsterdam donde sembró el horror y provocó deportaciones y asesinatos, se corrió la voz de su sadismo e impiedad, jalones indispensables para ascender en la pirámide de poder nazi.
En 1942 lo nombraron jefe de la Gestapo de Lyon. Desde el primer momento instaló el terror en la ciudad. Persiguió a los miembros de la Resistencia y deportó y asesinó miles de judíos. No sólo daba órdenes. Predicaba con el ejemplo, disfrutaba de la acción. Concurría a los operativos para mostrarle a sus subalternos la dureza con la que debían desempeñarse. Torturó y mató a Jean Moulin, el jefe de la Resistencia. Fue el responsable de más de 4000 asesinatos y de 7000 deportaciones. Y también de la muerte de 44 niños judíos de entre cuatro y 16 años que estaban en el asilo de Izieu, dónde los habían enviado clandestinamente para tratar de alejarlos de las garras del horror nazi. Con Barbie a la cabeza, un batallón de la Gestapo ingresó a sangre y fuego al lugar, mató a los siete adultos que los cuidaban y envió a los lagers a los 44 chicos. Ninguno sobrevivió.
Los hermanos de Simone Lagrange pertenecían a la Resistencia Francesa. Un día una patrulla alemana irrumpió en su casa de Lyon. Patearon la puerta, dieron vuelta los muebles, golpearon a las tres personas que vivían allí: al matrimonio Lagrange y a Simone que tenía 13 años. A la cabeza del grupo estaba el jefe de la Gestapo local, Klaus Barbie. Le gustaba estar presente en estos operativos, desatar su sadismo sobre las víctimas; disfrutaba también de que se corriera la voz en toda la ciudad y de que el miedo hacia su persona se acrecentara. Deseaba ser temido.
Al padre lo golpearon brutalmente. No buscaban una confesión de él. Sólo querían que las mujeres aflojaran, que ellas dieran el paradero de los buscados. Pero ni la madre ni la hermana hablaron. Barbie alejó a sus subordinados y quedó a cargo del interrogatorio. Tomó a Simone y la golpeó varias veces en la cara. Los ojos de la nena de 13 años se cerraron, la sangre caía por su cara y manchaba el vestido. Después Barbie la tomó del pelo, y la acercó a la madre que no podía ocultar su espanto. “Mirá, mirá lo que le estás haciendo a tu hija”, le dijo el nazi a la señora que siguió sin delatar a sus hijos. Los tres fueron deportados a un campo de concentración. Al padre lo mataron delante de su hija; la madre murió de tifus. Solo la hija regresó. Y se juró no descansar hasta hacer justicia, hasta que Klaus Barbie, el Carnicero de Lyon, fuera condenado. Tardó más de cuarenta años pero finalmente lo consiguió.
En los momentos en los que la suerte nazi en Francia ya estaba echada, sin embargo sólo por el placer de asesinar, por su antisemitismo rampante, pergeñó el Último Tren, una deportación final, con los vagones atestados de judíos horas antes de que las fuerzas aliadas ingresaran a liberar Lyon.
A pesar de esos antecedentes, tras la guerra consiguió quedar impune en base a su falta de escrúpulos, astucia, frialdad y la complicidad de muchos poderosos.
Apenas se produjo la rendición alemana, Barbie fue detenido. Pero se escapó del tren que lo llevaba al campo de prisioneros. Desde ese momento siempre consiguió que alguien lo refugiara.
Utilizó como tantos otros la Ratline, la Ruta de las Ratas. Cruz Roja, Génova, salvoconducto firmado por un obispo relevante y barco hacia Buenos Aires.
Allí comenzó su destino sudamericano. Las siguientes cuatro décadas las pasó entre Argentina, Bolivia y Perú.
El continente le ofrecía protección por la lejanía y por la permeabilidad de los gobernantes de esos tiempos hacia los nazis escapados. Muchos están seguros de que también encontró cobijo en la CIA, con la excusa de la Guerra Fría fue reclutado. Ese fue el escudo final que necesitaba para vivir sin preocuparse. Barbie entendió cómo se disputaba la Guerra Fría y utilizó el enfrentamiento de los vencedores en beneficio propio. Estados Unidos, con la excusa de la lucha contra el comunismo, no dudó en esas décadas en aliarse, prohijar y encubrir a dictadores latinoamericanos, tiranos africanos y hasta nazis. No importaron las sentencias que pesaban sobre él: en Francia había sido juzgado dos veces en ausencia y condenado a muerte por sus delitos en ambas oportunidades.
En Buenos Aires, según contó él mismo tiempo después, vivió en un hotel de la calle Maipú durante diez días. Después partió hacia Bolivia. Allí se asentó. Trabajó en un aserradero hasta que consiguió hacer contacto con el dictador de turno. Lo nombraron director de una compañía de comercio marítimo.
Se supo también que colaboró en varias operaciones de inteligencia y en el contrabando de armas en favor de los gobernantes de facto de la región. En Bolivia se hacía llamar Klaus Altman y tenía una activa vida pública con negocios con personajes conocidos y funcionarios. Visitaba oficialmente los despachos del poder, era hombre de consulta de los gobiernos de facto. Muchos sostienen que fue uno de los que diseñó la persecución del Che Guevara.
No parecía un hombre con dos condenas a muerte sobre sus espaldas. Se sentía seguro. Muy seguro. Rápidamente obtuvo la ciudadanía boliviana. Pero, como sucedía siempre en las dictaduras latinoamericanas, un cambio de mando, una puja militar lo dejó sin protección. Debió mudarse, modificar su lugar de residencia. En 1968 se desplazó hacia Perú. Allí le agregó una N al apellido que usaba. Pasó a ser Altmann.
En Lima, muy velozmente, como en Bolivia, se sintió muy cómodo. Proliferaban los negocios en las altas esferas. Su perfil era alto. Se sentía impune y protegido. No creía que debía esconderse de nadie. Seguía dándose el lujo de salir en la tapa de los diarios. Una mujer, una de sus tantas víctimas, lo reconoció en la portada del periódico limeño de mayor tirada, una nota que describía el encuentro entre algunos ministros peruanos y varios importantes hombres de negocios.
La víctima miró y miró la imagen. No podía creer que ese supuesto empresario fuera el oficial nazi que la había torturado un cuarto de siglo antes en Francia. Estaba convencida que era Barbie por más que el epígrafe de la foto dijera que su apellido era Altmann. La mujer envió el recorte a Beate y Serge Klarsfeld, un matrimonio que se dedicaba a perseguir y a cazar nazis. Ellos sólo podían comparar esa imagen poco nítida, algo borrosa, granulosa, con dos fotografías de Barbie sacadas en 1943 que tenían en su archivo. Con ayuda de expertos determinaron que las coincidencias fisonómicas eran múltiples. Era una pista que valía la pena seguir.
Era 1971. Empezaba un trabajo para los Klarsfeld que recién terminaría dieciséis años después. Se convirtieron en la sombra de Barbie. Serge Klarsfeld, casi en simultáneo, recibió en su pequeña oficina unas fotocopias. Era el dictamen de una fiscalía alemana archivando la causa con Klaus Barbie por crímenes contra la humanidad.
En ese momento podrían haber tirado la toalla, pero los Klarsfeld no se resignaron. Comenzaron una campaña en varios frentes. Sabían que necesitaban esfuerzo, paciencia e imaginación. Hicieron presentaciones judiciales en Alemania y en Francia. Sabían, también, que esto no se dirimía sólo en el plano legal. Debían alertar a la opinión pública.
La primera tarea fue movilizar al pueblo de Lyon. Si la gente que había sufrido las atrocidades perpetradas por el jefe de la Gestapo local no se quejaba e indignaba, difícilmente le hicieran caso los tribunales alemanes. Necesitaban que los franceses los acompañaran. Además todavía había allí varios que podían reconocerlo y que podían testimoniar en su contra. Montaron una campaña similar en Munich.
Beate Klarsfeld luego viajó a Perú. Alertado por sus amigos poderosos, Barbie huyó y volvió a Bolivia. Sentía al país del Altiplano como su refugio. La protección era doble: la que le brindaban sus amigos poderosos y la de la ley. Al ser ciudadano boliviano no podían enviarlo a Francia pese a sus condenas previas en ausencia: no había tratado de extradición entre los dos países.
Los militares bolivianos le recordaron a la señora Klarsfeld que tenía visa de turista y que por lo tanto, no podía movilizar a nadie ni utilizar la prensa. De todas maneras ella se las ingenió para hacer saber que esa persona a la que todas llamaban Altmann era en realidad Klaus Barbie. Los diarios publicaron la noticia. El ambiente se enrareció para Barbie, muchos de sus protectores se hicieron a un lado por temor a perder sus negocios y terminó preso por una denuncia añeja por defraudación y estafas varias. A pesar de eso, los pedidos de extradición siguieron siendo denegados.

Adina Flores, an activist and a self-proclaimed «civil rights» advocate with a colorful social media presence, is endorsing Eric Jones, the Democratic candidate for Congress in California’s 4th Congressional District.
The endorsement itself, which focuses on Jones’ promises to combat women’s sexual exploitation, is nothing out of the ordinary. But Flores’ Facebook, Instagram and Substack pages are full of eccentric content that frames political issues as a conflict between race, sexual orientation and secretive sources of influence. The endorsement raises questions for Jones, who has met with Flores multiple times according to social media clips, about whether he agrees with Flores’ views.
In one video, posted to Facebook, Flores stated she believed part of California, Sonoma County, was run by Jews.
«But we’re literally run by the gay Jewish mafia — the Zionists in Sonoma County. The Jews still run the world. That’s where we’re at,» Flores said. «All our money gets sent to Israel, but nobody wants to talk about that.»

«Santa Rosa City Schools is always recruiting for little gay communists. Help save public school enrollment decline by sending your child off to liberal prison indoctrination centers,» she said in another post earlier this year.
When asked about Flores’ comments online, Jones’ campaign said he condemns prejudice towards the Jewish community.
«I firmly condemn any and all hate toward our Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities. It has no place in our district. My wife is Jewish, we are raising our kids in a Jewish household, I’m a fierce advocate for our public schools and educators, and I have zero tolerance for hateful commentary toward my neighbors or my family,» a campaign spokesperson said in a comment to Digital.
Beyond her comment about Jews, in much of her content, Flores bashes what she sees as efforts to indoctrinate kids in LGBTQ+ ideology through control over institutions like schools and local government.
«I wasn’t doing any of the wokeness. I stood up for conservative parents. So right now, look at this pride indoctrination. I’m not trying to be mean, but who made this logo? They got all the rainbow mafia colors, and it looks like a p-nis,» Flores said, holding up a design made by a local school.

«Like literally that’s where we’re at. So, I’m sorry that’s f—ing cracked out. If your child is in public school, please remove them because they’re going to be gay and r-tarded. Thank you, Santa Rosa schools,» Flores said.
Flores’ criticisms, usually couched in similar language, cut across both parties.
«Every day my Instagram algorithm is filled with reels of Democrats and Republicans arguing back and forth deciding who is more gay and r-tarded even though they are two sides of the same bird [sic],» Flores said.

Flores recounted that she was once a government employee but was forced out of the role and is banned from serving in public roles again.
«I got started in my activism because I am a former government employee. I’m a whistleblower who was forced out of the government.»
Flores said she was removed over COVID-19 mask mandates and the information that was being shared with parents.
For his own part, Jones has centered his campaign around issues like affordability, government transparency and protecting government-run programs.
On his website, Jones has listed three main priorities: ending corruption, lowering the cost of living and resource sustainability in government. His stances have attracted endorsements from progressive groups like Indivisible and Our Revolution, organizations with ties to progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Throughout his campaign, Jones has highlighted his family’s struggle with financial stability. He grew up in a military family and had a disabled father. According to Jones, the family also struggled to overcome medical debt, relying on Medicaid and food stamps.
In her endorsement of Jones, which she made shortly after the resignation of Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., Flores praised Jones’ promise to be a voice for survivors of sexual misconduct. Swalwell, a prominent California Democrat, surrendered his office after several women accused him of unwanted sexual advances, allegations that he denied.

After Digital reached out to Flores, who has over 144,000 followers on Instagram, for comment, she posted a video response on Instagram dismissing the inquiry and saying she was a «private citizen» and that her social media accounts are «not monetized.»

President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington this week, one day after signing a Greenland security agreement that, once in force, would bar non-NATO states such as China from establishing a military presence there, sharpening the Arctic-security backdrop to their face-to-face talks.
Xi’s three-day state visit unfolded against that backdrop, with Trump hosting a formal White House arrival ceremony, holding high-stakes talks, joining Xi for a tour of the National Archives and presiding over a state dinner attended by some of America’s most prominent technology executives.

Greenland has emerged as a backdrop to Trump’s two meetings with Xi this year. Negotiations over an expanded U.S. security role there began months before Trump traveled to Beijing in May, while Trump renewed his public pressure over Greenland during the summer as his administration continued negotiations aimed in part at limiting Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic.
Five days before Xi arrived in Washington, Trump announced a Greenland security agreement that was formally signed Sept. 22 and, once in force, would expand the U.S. military position while restricting Chinese military presence and certain sensitive investments in the territory.
China has had its eye on Greenland for years, especially as it looks to expand its role in the Arctic. Beijing has shown interest in Greenland’s infrastructure and natural resources, including its valuable rare earth and critical mineral deposits. U.S. officials have also pointed to past Chinese efforts involving a former U.S. naval base and airport projects as signs of Beijing’s broader ambitions in the region.
Balling is an expert in foreign policy, particularly in the Western hemisphere, and says Trump’s historic deal with Greenland struck a massive blow to China.

WATCH: Black bishop calls voter ID argument ‘deeply insulting’ after explosive noncitizen registration report
EXCLUSIVE: Black bishop and author Earl Walker Jackson blasted Democrats and the left over what he called the «deeply insulting» and «deeply offensive» claim that minorities and African Americans cannot get I.D.s to vote.
Debate erupted this week over voter I.D. requirements after Reuters reported that an investigation found 30,000 noncitizens were «erroneously» registered to vote in 11 states. Jackson, a nondenominational Christian leader and descendant of enslaved ancestors, said the findings underscored what he described as a growing problem of noncitizen voting that disenfranchises American citizens.
In an interview with Digital, Jackson charged, «Why the Democrats are so committed to this can only be explained one way: they think it empowers people who shouldn’t vote to vote, and they believe those people are going to vote for them.»
«This is nothing but a power grab,» he posited, emphasizing that «every vote by a noncitizen does in fact cancel out the vote of an American citizen, or it amplifies it in a way that’s illegal or inappropriate.»

Reuters reported on Wednesday that more than 30,000 self-declared noncitizens were added to U.S. voter rolls since 2000.
The outlet attributed the erroneous registrations to «software glitches and clerical errors» and said its review suggested «inadvertent bureaucratic failures, rather than organized efforts to register immigrants illegally.» Reuters said it was unable to determine how many noncitizens actually cast ballots.
The errors occurred in California, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Virginia.
Don Palmer, the senior legal fellow for election integrity with the Heritage Foundation, told Digital that due to legal loopholes and loose reporting requirements, he believes the 30,000 number «is actually quite low.»
«I think it’s undercounting it. I think those are the identified non-citizens that have been accidentally or erroneously placed on the voter rolls through the mistake of the driver’s license agency. I think it’s much more because we don’t know in a lot of states, either they have not conducted the audits or they’re not using tools to find noncitizens that may have accidentally been placed on the rolls,» he said.
Palmer said «the answer really is that there needs to be more care taken to developing a system of verifying citizenship and you just don’t see that in most states.»

«If they’re going to do voter registration, they need to make sure that there’s a verification in place for identity and for citizenship, just as if you come into an agency and you’re getting a driver’s license or identification card, you’ve got to show that I.D., you’ve got to make sure that your identity is confirmed, similarly, if you’re going to register someone to vote at the driver’s license agency, there needs to be a verification process or a documentation process to ensure that you are a citizen,» he said.
Meanwhile, after hearing the 30,000 figure, Jackson told Digital that «the sad reality is I’m not shocked.»
«I wonder if it’s more,» he said, adding, «We’ve been told, particularly by Democrats, that that’s not happening, that there’s nothing to see here, and yet we hear again and again documentation that it is happening.»
With this in mind, he decried efforts to resist more stringent voter eligibility verification and identification. He took particular issue with those equating voter I.D. requirements as anti-Black and a new form of Jim Crow.
«Forgive me for being personal about this for a moment, but I just find this deeply insulting and deeply offensive because the implication is that somehow if you are black, no matter how wealthy, educated, well-to-do, somehow getting an ID is a problem for you,» he said.
«But on the other hand, if you’re white, no matter how poor, no matter how uneducated, no matter what your circumstances are, somehow you can get an I.D., that’s not a problem, I mean, it’s preposterous.»
