Bessent readies Trump $250 bill as one big hurdle stands between Treasury and making it reality

The Treasury Department is preparing a $250 note bearing President Donald Trump’s portrait for the nation’s 250th anniversary, but the bill can only move forward only if Congress changes federal law barring living people from U.S. currency.
«It’s all up on Capitol Hill. At Treasury, we prepare things in advance. So we have prepared, in advance, that if the legislation is passed, but we will stick to the law,» explained Bessent.
Trump’s portrait would be placed on $250 paper currency for the first time if lawmakers succeed in changing a key federal law that bars living people from appearing on the currency. Democratic lawmakers and leaders, meanwhile, are decrying the proposal as they escalate their opposition to Trump and the GOP.
«In response to active legislation sponsored by Representative Joe Wilson, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence. Should this legislative mandate be signed into law, the BEP is moving proactively to produce a $250 commemorative note which will appropriately recognize the 250th Anniversary of our great nation,» a Treasury spokesperson told Fox News Digital when asked about the bills.

Staunch Trump supporter, Republican South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson, introduced the bill in February 2025.
Wilson introduced the bill not only to coincide with America’s birthday in July, but also as a rebuke of the Biden administration and its economic policies. The bill was referred to the House Financial Services Committee when it was introduced and has remained with the committee.
The Federal Reserve currently issues only seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. Kentucky Republican Rep. Andy Barr posted an image to X in January of the reported mock-up of the bill, which showed red, white and blue colors behind Trump’s image.
«I have two mandates for U.S. currency at present. That no living person can be on U.S. currency. And the currency must say, ‘In God we trust,’» said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent while hosting the White House press briefing Thursday.

Democrats quickly took to social media to criticize the proposal, arguing it centered on Trump’s personal legacy rather than the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration.
«By the end of Trump’s term, it’ll be just enough to buy one gallon of gas and a carton of eggs,» said former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in an X post.
«Hard No on a Trump $250 bill. Get over yourself. The upcoming July 4 anniversary is not about a wannabe King. It’s about celebrating the American journey,» wrote Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on X.
«While Americans are being crushed by rising prices, Trump is brainstorming new ways to stoke his ego. Maybe if he were more focused on lowering costs for working families, they wouldn’t need a new $250 bill to afford necessities,» said Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner.

ARLINGTON, Texas — During his whirlwind trip to Texas to rally Republican voters ahead of November’s elections, President Donald Trump on Thursday made a pit stop to honor America’s bravest warriors the day before the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The intimate gathering was held at the National Medal of Honor Museum, where Trump also met privately with the Medal of Honor recipients who were present.
Trump also signed legislation clearing the way for a new monument honoring the award’s recipients on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., before addressing roughly 100 guests, including 16 of the nation’s 65 living Medal of Honor recipients.

«It’s very special for all of us,» Trump said. «It’s special for me to be here, and it’s an American treasure devoted to the best and bravest warriors of our country. And, frankly, it’s really the best they’ve ever produced.»
The event was a stark contrast to the tens of thousands to whom Trump had addressed about 13 hours prior at the GOP midterm convention, a half hour away in Dallas.

Charlotte Jones, daughter of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, is the chairman of the museum’s board of directors and served as the event’s emcee. Her father beamed with pride as he sat front and center, which Trump noted from the stage.
High-ranking Republican politicians, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La. and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, were among the high-profile guests who huddled in the room for the event.
Both Jones and Troy Bertram, the CEO of the new center, stressed that the National Medal of Honor Museum (NMOH) is not just a war museum.
«We are not a military history museum,» Bertram told Fox News Digital. «We are storytelling around the humans, about their courage, their sacrifice. Who they were before what they became.»
Trump’s speech struck a tone of admiration for the men and women honored by the museum.

«They stormed into hellfire and crushed America’s enemies,» the president said. «They had bravery like few people could even think of having. They carried the wounded out of battle and on their own backs and carried them back and forth. … They stood in the way of bullets, purposely just standing just like this and taking bullets, and it’s amazing.»
One of those warriors was Army Lt. Col. William Swenson, a man of steely resolve who serves on the museum’s board.

His heroic 2009 actions in Afghanistan, where he fought during Operation Enduring Freedom, earned him the highest military decoration awarded by the U.S. government in 2013, presented by then-President Barack Obama.
Pinned down by the enemy during a seven-hour battle in the Ganjgal Valley of the country’s Kunar Province, Swenson saved lives by making multiple trips into active combat zones, pulling wounded soldiers to safety and loading them onto helicopters for evacuation.
«The president and our commander-in-chief has been a strong supporter of this project,» Swenson told Fox News Digital. «He continues to be a strong supporter of this project, and having him as involved as he is going to be a great contribution to get the monument done to standard, on time and to start signaling the messaging to the American people what’s important about service.»
The 47th president is working with private donors to build the new monument in Washington, D.C., near the Lincoln Memorial, in honor of recipients of the nation’s highest military award for heroism in battle. He previously signed the Hershel «Woody» Williams National Medal of Honor Monument Location Act, officially clearing the path for its construction.

«When he died, Woody was the last surviving recipient from World War II. [He] had one of the most dangerous jobs of war, and that’s operating a flamethrower,» Trump said, speaking of the man for whom the bill was named.
«In the Battle of Iwo Jima, he carved a path to American victory — literally carved a path so soldiers could get in and win through a deadly gauntlet of enemy strongholds. And back and forth he went. He just kept going back and forth.»
Williams was one of about 300 flamethrowers in Iwo Jima, a famed and defining battle in the war’s Pacific theater. The late soldier’s family members were in the audience and were fondly acknowledged by the president.
«America will never, ever forget what they did and what they risked and how much they risked [and] what they meant to their families and what they’ve meant to our country,» Trump concluded. «I want to thank you all once again.»
Swenson described the importance of remembrance.
«What we do to ensure that we have common history, common beliefs, is we have monuments, and we have museums. We have our mythology that tells us who we are as Americans and what we will continue to be in the future,» he said. «Without this mythology, we don’t have that narrative.

The fact that the event was held the day before the 25th anniversary of 9/11 wasn’t lost on him, either.
He described the tragedy as a «seminal event» for him, which happened just as he was finishing college, that shaped his entire future. Swenson spent 22 years in the Army after the attack.
«The United States is forged in fire,» he said. «We’ve had revolutions, we’ve had civil wars, we’ve had global conflicts, we’ve had civil strife. There will always be challenges to our freedom and to our country, and it’s up to us to move forward from those events and create that more perfect union.

«That said, we must always learn from these events to help better prevent them and also to honor the sacrifice of the service members who fought in these conflicts, and also understand how we as citizens can create a better country that does not have these problems — that does not have these challenges. It’s our responsibility to future generations to prevent that.»

León XIV recibió a los obispos de El Salvador en Roma y un gesto inesperado marcó el cierre
León XIV recibió a los obispos de El Salvador el 11 de septiembre en una audiencia privada que cerró su visita ad limina Apostolorum en Roma, dedicada a la oración, el diálogo y las reuniones con organismos de la Curia Romana. Los prelados entregaron al Pontífice una reliquia de primer grado de San Óscar Arnulfo Romero, informó Vatican News.
La delegación salvadoreña llegó a Roma el 7 de septiembre y también mantuvo un encuentro con el Dicasterio para la Comunicación. Allí presentó la realidad de la Iglesia y de la sociedad del país, sus desafíos y esperanzas, además de la labor comunicativa eclesial.
El futuro del país estuvo entre los asuntos planteados por los obispos. El cardenal Gregorio Rosa Chávez, obispo auxiliar emérito de San Salvador, pidió que los salvadoreños sean parte de un proyecto colectivo. “Ser todos parte de un proyecto de futuro para el país. Ser protagonistas. Y que los pueblos sean protagonistas”, dijo.
A juicio del purpurado, el pueblo salvadoreño posee una energía capaz de impulsar un futuro nuevo si encuentra espacios adecuados para expresarse. Su planteamiento apunta a una cultura del encuentro y del diálogo, en la que la población participe de las decisiones sobre el porvenir nacional.
Los obispos llevaron a Roma la preocupación por contemplar la realidad salvadoreña desde la dignidad de cada persona. Rosa Chávez vinculó esa perspectiva con Magnifica humanitas, la primera encíclica de León XIV, centrada en la custodia de la persona humana ante los desafíos de la inteligencia artificial.
El cardenal afirmó que la Iglesia local leyó el documento para observar el presente y el futuro del país desde la mirada propuesta por el Papa. “La persona humana en el centro, plenamente realizada, con futuro, con esperanza”, destacó.
La encíclica, según explicó, comunica esperanza aun en un tiempo definido por cambios tecnológicos rápidos. “Yo una vez, durante dos días, palabra por palabra, quedé sorprendido de cómo comunica esperanza”, relató sobre su lectura del texto pontificio.
La centralidad de la persona también se enlaza, para Rosa Chávez, con el mensaje de paz que León XIV transmite desde el comienzo de su pontificado.
“La paz que nace en el corazón de Jesucristo y un corazón también transformado por su ternura, su misericordia, hace posible un mundo nuevo. No hay otro camino”, sostuvo.
El cardenal describió a la Iglesia de El Salvador como una comunidad marcada por el amor al Papa, a la Virgen y a la Eucaristía, además de una esperanza que persiste pese al sufrimiento. También señaló la cercanía del Pontífice con el país. “Él conoce a nuestra tierra increíblemente bien. Es hijo de nuestra tierra, en cierto modo”, aseguró.
San Óscar Arnulfo Romero en los encuentros vaticanos
La figura de San Óscar Arnulfo Romero estuvo presente en las reuniones de los obispos con los distintos organismos de la Curia. Rosa Chávez dijo haber percibido en Roma un afecto extendido hacia el arzobispo mártir de San Salvador.“Ciertamente es un santo de toda la Iglesia. Aquí se le ama tanto en Roma”, indicó.
Ese reconocimiento anima a la Iglesia salvadoreña a valorar el legado pastoral de Romero y su entrega al pueblo. “Hemos dado al mundo un santo pastor y mártir realmente extraordinario”, afirmó el cardenal.
Los encuentros con los responsables vaticanos fueron definidos por Rosa Chávez como una experiencia “muy intensa, muy inspiradora, muy estimulante, muy cordial”. El purpurado destacó que el intercambio estuvo atravesado por un diálogo “muy intenso, muy vivo, muy fraterno” y por el afecto hacia la Iglesia salvadoreña.
Al dirigirse a los habitantes del país, el cardenal pidió sostener la esperanza. “Que no decaiga la esperanza. Que sigamos esperando con esperanza y soñando el futuro que Dios quiere”, agregó.
Rosa Chávez recordó además una frase que escuchó durante un encuentro con San Juan Pablo II: “El Salvador salvará al mundo”. Para él, esa expresión llama al país a ser luz y esperanza para otros pueblos y a asumir una misión evangelizadora.

Una propuesta para que un niño, niña o adolescente sea reasignado a otra familia en un plazo máximo de 15 días, cuando los solicitantes decidan terminar la convivencia, fue incorporada a las consultas del proyecto de ley 570, que reforma el régimen de adopciones en Panamá.
La iniciativa fue presentada por Roderick Burgos, de la Fundación Pro-Familia, durante una mesa técnica de la Comisión de la Mujer, la Niñez, la Juventud y la Familia, presidida por la diputada Olga Paulette Thomas. El planteamiento busca evitar que el menor permanezca sin una alternativa familiar definida.
La modificación propone considerar como “devolución” la decisión voluntaria de los solicitantes de poner fin a la convivencia con el menor que les fue entregado, tanto durante el acogimiento preadoptivo como después de constituida la adopción. Ante esa situación, la reasignación deberá efectuarse dentro del plazo establecido.
El término no supone que el cambio de familia pueda ejecutarse de manera automática. La propuesta deberá precisar desde cuándo comienzan a contarse los 15 días, qué autoridad determinará la nueva asignación y cuáles evaluaciones acompañarán al menor.
También deberá establecer cómo operará el procedimiento cuando la adopción ya sea definitiva.
El proyecto 570, presentado por los diputados Manuel Cheng Peñalba y Janine Prado, se encuentra en la etapa final de consultas con los sectores involucrados. Una vez concluida esta fase, el equipo asesor revisará las modificaciones y preparará un informe para la discusión en primer debate, según la Asamblea Nacional.
La propuesta de reasignación introduce un plazo concreto ante una situación que puede provocar una nueva ruptura emocional en menores previamente separados de su entorno familiar. Su aplicación requeriría combinar la rapidez administrativa con evaluaciones que garanticen la seguridad, compatibilidad y estabilidad de la siguiente familia seleccionada.
El objetivo es impedir que la interrupción de una convivencia derive en una permanencia prolongada dentro del sistema de protección. Sin embargo, una segunda asignación también exige acompañamiento psicológico y seguimiento institucional, debido a que el menor puede enfrentar sentimientos de rechazo, pérdida de confianza o temor a otro abandono.
La reforma contempla, además, que antes de avanzar hacia una adopción se priorice la permanencia o el retorno del menor con familiares aptos. Solamente después de agotar las alternativas dentro de su entorno familiar correspondería aplicar otras medidas de protección, incluida su integración a una familia adoptiva.
Entre los cambios discutidos figura la activación de la atención psicosocial durante las primeras 24 horas posteriores al ingreso del menor al sistema y la apertura del expediente dentro de las siguientes 72 horas. El procedimiento incluiría la identificación de familiares que puedan asumir responsablemente su cuidado.
La investigación psicosocial inicial tendría un plazo máximo de 30 días hábiles e incluiría la elaboración del árbol familiar, apoyada con información del Registro Civil. Si aparece un pariente apto, las instituciones deberán valorar programas de reunificación o fortalecimiento, siempre que esa alternativa proteja el interés superior del menor.
Cuando no exista una opción familiar viable, la autoridad dispondría de tres días hábiles para presentar la solicitud correspondiente ante el tribunal competente. Las extensiones de la investigación solamente podrían concederse de forma justificada, con el propósito de evitar que la búsqueda familiar se convierta en una demora indefinida.
La propuesta también establece periodos para la evaluación de los aspirantes y la asignación. La valoración preadoptiva tendría una duración máxima de dos meses, mientras la decisión sobre la idoneidad debería emitirse en cinco días hábiles. Posteriormente, el acogimiento preadoptivo se desarrollaría durante 30 días calendario.
La selección correspondería al Comité de Asignación Familiar, que se reuniría cada 15 días y deberá tomar sus decisiones con base en las necesidades y características particulares de cada menor, no en las preferencias de los adultos. La reforma también procura preservar el vínculo entre hermanos durante el proceso de adopción.
Las familias acogentes que hayan cuidado a un menor durante más de un año podrían postularse como adoptantes y recibir consideración prioritaria, siempre que cumplan los requisitos legales y exista una declaratoria de adoptabilidad. Esta posibilidad busca reconocer relaciones estables sin convertir el acogimiento temporal en un acceso automático a la adopción definitiva.
El debate sobre los 15 días incorpora ahora uno de los momentos más delicados del proceso: qué ocurre cuando fracasa la convivencia con la familia seleccionada. La versión definitiva deberá equilibrar la necesidad de una respuesta rápida con garantías suficientes para que la nueva asignación no produzca otra separación perjudicial para el menor.
