Blue-city drug gear exposes hypocrisy as cleanup group faces probe, leader cries foul

The founder of a Seattle nonprofit that cleans up discarded drug paraphernalia distributed through city and county harm reduction programs says she was stunned to learn her organization is now under state investigation over how it handles those same supplies.
Andrea Suarez is the founder of We Heart Seattle. She rallies volunteers to pick up and dispose of needles, smoking supplies such as pipes and foil, and other drug-use items distributed through King County «harm reduction» programs. Critics argue the policies can enable continued drug use rather than moving people toward treatment and recovery.
«One of the biggest advocacy work I have done is that I go to the needle exchange and I get what they call the ‘party kit,’ and I demonstrated that our King County ‘Health’ Department is handing out cookers and tourniquets and glass pipes and paraphernalia to do drugs,» Suarez told Fox News Digital. «I was referring to this ‘party kit’ as a ‘suicide kit’ with very little, if no information on where to get medical detox.»

Suarez has been working on her mission of cleaner streets, parks and playgrounds for seven years, and We Heart Seattle has logged more than 50,000 hours of volunteer service. Founded in 2020 as a solo operation, Suarez has built an army of hundreds of volunteers over the past six-and-a-half years.
The group is now facing a state workplace-safety investigation, which Suarez says is its first government probe.
We Heart Seattle is under investigation by the Washington Department of Labor & Industries following a complaint alleging «improper handling and collection of hypodermic needles and fentanyl paraphernalia,» according to documents sent to Suarez from the Washington Department of Labor & Industries and viewed by Fox News Digital.

Suarez denied wrongdoing and said the group uses gloves, grabbers and sharps-disposal procedures, while pointing to safety guidance posted on We Heart Seattle’s website. That plan includes guiding supporters on what to wear to protect themselves from potential hazards, including wearing long pants and sleeves and closed-toed boots. The website also provides guidance for volunteers to stay safe while picking up debris.
Suarez argued there is a double standard in the state scrutinizing how her group handles discarded drug-use supplies while local harm reduction programs distribute some of the same types of materials.

«We have been out here for… going on seven years every day, every weekend we’re out there picking up needles and trash. And for my ‘thank you’ letter from the government, it was this letter saying, ‘You’re under investigation for allegedly improperly handling this very equipment that they hand out with no instructions.’»
Suarez said that after learning of the investigation, she visited a harm reduction site and asked for specific guidance on handling «fentanyl foil» and other dangerous drug supplies, but said staff did not provide her with such instructions.
The Washington Department of Labor & Industries told Fox News Digital that the investigation stems from a complaint made by someone outside of the organization.

Spokesman Matt Ross said inspections can take up to six months, and that once complete, the results are made available to the public. He said there’s a related probe into a temporary staffing agency, but declined to provide specifics.
«Inspectors may issue violations if an organization isn’t meeting those requirements, and may also issue violations for other safety hazards they observe in the course of an inspection,» he said. «The inspectors also work with the organizations on the best way to address the hazards they find. Potential penalties will depend on the specifics of the violations.»
Suarez criticized state and local harm reduction policies, arguing they contribute to the conditions her volunteers are cleaning up.

«You have to look at the optics of a state, a county, a city level that allows people to openly use lethal and illegal narcotics like methamphetamines and fentanyl, and they give you the paraphernalia to use those drugs on our taxpayer dime, to use in public spaces with no consequences… and then I’m over hear trying to manage the problem, clean up our dog parks, clean up our children’s merry-go-rounds, ensuring our playgrounds don’t have needles and foil sticking up through the grass, and I’m the one under investigation,» said Suarez.
«The optics are egregious,» she said.
She also painted a gruesome picture of life in Seattle’s public spaces.

«I think I’m going to go after the state to say, ‘Why aren’t you training me before I go into our city library when there’s drug addicts slumped over in all of the computer chairs, using our bathrooms, shooting drugs and leaving their paraphernalia all around the perimeter, putting me or my child or dog at risk of picking something up and getting a blood-borne pathogen infection of sorts,’ right?» she said. «So this whole city is a blood-borne pathogen risk for everybody. I think that’s why people don’t go to these public places anymore, and they really frankly have been overtaken by drug users.»

Suarez said she plans to look into whether her group was unfairly targeted. She described herself as relatively apolitical before starting the nonprofit, but said its cleanup work has increasingly drawn the organization into political disputes over Seattle’s drug and homelessness policies.
King County defended its harm reduction approach, saying it is intended to reduce overdoses while connecting people with treatment and other services.
«The influx of fentanyl led to a sharp rise in fatal overdoses across the U.S. and in King County. Our comprehensive approach to overdose response and recovery focuses on getting more people into treatment and preventing more overdoses,» spokesperson Sharon Bogan said, adding that the county saw a «promising overall decline in overdoses» of 32% between 2023 and 2025.
Representatives from the city of Seattle did not return a request for comment.

Cilia Flores solicitó prisión domiciliaria por “problemas de salud” mientras espera el juicio por narcotráfico junto a Maduro
Cilia Flores, esposa del ex dictador venezolano Nicolás Maduro, solicitó a un tribunal federal de Nueva York que se le permita esperar su juicio por narcotráfico bajo arresto domiciliario en lugar de continuar detenida en una prisión de Brooklyn. Sus abogados presentaron el pedido el miércoles ante el juez Alvin K. Hellerstein, con el argumento de que una afección cardíaca que padece desde hace años se agravó desde su ingreso al centro de detención.
Según el escrito judicial, firmado por los defensores Mark Donnelly y Andrés Sánchez, Flores convivía con un “prolapso de la válvula mitral” antes de su arresto y recibía un tratamiento mensual con inyecciones que no ha podido continuar durante su reclusión. En su lugar, el equipo médico del penal le prescribió aspirina infantil, una estatina, diltiazem y nitroglicerina para los episodios de dolor en el pecho.
“Merece la oportunidad de esperar su juicio en confinamiento domiciliario”, escribieron los abogados, quienes detallaron que su clienta perdió más de once kilos, sufrió la pérdida de dos molares y presenta reflujo y gastritis persistentes desde enero. La defensa añadió que médicos recomendaron realizarle un cateterismo cardíaco, procedimiento que podría derivar en intervenciones adicionales y que, según argumentan, requiere un entorno de recuperación distinto al que ofrece una cárcel federal.
El documento también hace referencia a un episodio de salud ocurrido el 29 de julio que, de acuerdo con los propios abogados, “aparentemente” pudo tratarse de un infarto leve, aunque este punto no cuenta con confirmación médica oficial.
La defensa propuso un esquema de detención alternativa: una residencia privada dentro del distrito judicial de Manhattan, custodiada por guardias armados durante las 24 horas, con visitas restringidas a las personas autorizadas por la corte y la fiscalía, líneas telefónicas intervenidas y monitoreo por video. Flores ofreció además asumir los costos del traslado y entregar su pasaporte como garantía adicional para permanecer bajo custodia estadounidense.
Los abogados subrayaron que el personal del centro de detención “ha sido extremadamente respetuoso” con la pareja y que Flores “no cuestiona que ha recibido una atención excelente” por parte de los profesionales médicos que la atendieron tanto en la prisión como en el hospital. Sin embargo, insistieron en que “un centro de detención carece de las condiciones necesarias” para una recuperación adecuada tras eventuales procedimientos cardíacos.
Bajo sello el historial médico de Flores
Paralelamente, el juez Hellerstein aceptó una petición complementaria de la defensa para mantener bajo sello el historial médico de Flores presentado como respaldo del pedido de arresto domiciliario. En su resolución, el magistrado sostuvo que “los tribunales de este circuito autorizan regularmente la presentación de historiales médicos bajo sello”, al considerar que prevalece el interés de la acusada en proteger la privacidad de esa información sobre la presunción de acceso público a los expedientes judiciales.
La fiscalía federal de Manhattan no ha presentado aún una respuesta formal a la solicitud y un portavoz de esa oficina declinó hacer comentarios. El juez tampoco se ha pronunciado sobre el pedido.
Flores, de 69 años, y Maduro, de 63, permanecen detenidos desde el 3 de enero, cuando fuerzas estadounidenses los capturaron en un operativo nocturno en su residencia de Caracas y los trasladaron a Nueva York. Ambos se declararon no culpables de los cargos que los acusan de integrar una conspiración para introducir cocaína en territorio estadounidense.
Las defensas de ambos acusados presentaron además mociones separadas para desestimar la causa, basadas en un reclamo de inmunidad soberana por sus cargos como jefe de Estado y primera dama al momento del arresto. Una audiencia para escuchar los argumentos sobre esas mociones está prevista para el 17 de noviembre, mientras que el inicio del juicio quedó fijado para el 1 de junio de 2027.

Roy Cooper, former North Carolina governor and a Democratic candidate for the Senate, believes his party should incorporate a big-tent approach to an emerging wave of socialist candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
When asked if he would sign the Promise to America, a repudiation of socialist stances put out by moderate Democrats, Cooper said he wouldn’t.
«I don’t see any need to,» Cooper said in video footage obtained by Fox News Digital.
«I think the party needs a wide spectrum, particularly at a time when the Republican Party is shrinking and having all kinds of loyalty tests. I think we need to have all kinds of folks to be a part of our party.»

Cooper’s comment comes as he wages a bid to fill the seat of retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., and win over a historically Republican-leaning state. It also raises questions of whether moderate Democrats believe their platforms can coexist with the aims of the DSA.
The DSA espouses positions like abolishing the U.S. Senate, establishing public ownership of corporations and abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to their website.
The group paints a picture of what those policies could look like in practice on its website.
«You have no debt. You don’t need health insurance. You don’t pay a mortgage or have a landlord, because comfortable housing is a human right. Your retirement is publicly funded. Food, education, energy, medicine and transportation aren’t for-profit businesses; they are common goods and utilities,» the group states.
Cooper is not affiliated with or backed by the DSA and has pitched himself as a candidate with an ability to reach across the aisle. His campaign has highlighted his ability to work with a Republican-controlled legislature during his tenure as governor from 2017 to 2025.

«For the record, no,» he told the New York Times on whether he was a Communist. «I have a record of working across the aisle. The people of North Carolina know that I can be a senator that puts them first. Before power, before party, before politics. I feel confident that at the end of the day, they’ll send me to Washington.»
When asked if Cooper’s platform is at odds with the DSA’s views, Cooper’s campaign declined to comment, noting that his commitments are reserved for his constituents.
«The only pledge Roy makes is to the people of North Carolina. Roy is not a socialist and he will work with anyone, including Republicans, as he has done his entire career to lower costs for hardworking families and fight for North Carolina,» his campaign told Fox News Digital.
Some Republicans are skeptical of that reasoning.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, believes moderates are afraid to challenge their progressive flank as candidates championing the far left have surged in the 2026 midterm primaries.
«That dynamic is dangerous right now because they are terrified of the extreme left. Finding a middle ground on ideological issues right now is … the prospects for success, particularly between now and election day, are not high,» Cruz said at an energy summit hosted by Club for Growth and Arnold Ventures on Thursday.
«Schumer is truly terrified right now,» he added, referring to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
In the video interview, Cooper said he believes the party will only weaken itself in its resistance to the administration if it doesn’t band together.

«Particularly now when we’re in such difficult straits and we’re in a foxhole right now. We’ve all got to be together to take our government back,» Cooper said.
«We could fall to the autocracy, anytime we don’t stick together. So, I don’t see the need signing something,» Cooper said.
Having secured the Democratic nomination, Cooper now heads to the Nov. 3 general election where he faces off against Republican nominee Michael Whatley, the former chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC).

La policía brasileña realizó este jueves un vasto operativo por el presunto desvío de recursos públicos hacia la productora de un biopic sobre el exmandatario Jair Bolsonaro. El filme está envuelto en investigaciones que afectan la campaña presidencial de su hijo Flávio.
La operación puso el foco en el campo conservador de cara a las elecciones de octubre, mientras una crisis inédita entre jueces en la corte suprema preocupa al gobierno del izquierdista Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, que busca la reelección.
Lula y Flávio Bolsonaro están empatados en las encuestas para una probable segunda vuelta, por lo que se prevé una lucha ajustadísima.
Las elecciones se celebrarán el 4 de octubre.
Por qué investigan un filme sobre Jair Bolsonaro
El diputado bolsonarista Mario Frias, del Partido Liberal, y la productora audiovisual Karina Gama están entre los blancos de la operación de este jueves.
Gama es titular de Go Up Entertainment, productora de “Dark Horse”, protagonizada por el actor estadounidense Jim Caviezel en la piel del ultraderechista Jair Bolsonaro. Frias es productor ejecutivo de la película que aún no se estrena.
A ambos se les prohibió salir del país y la policía incautó siete armas de fuego a Frías, dijo una fuente de la Policía Federal (PF).
La operación indaga sobre un “supuesto desvío de recursos públicos provenientes de enmiendas parlamentarias” por “centenas de millones de reales” (millones de dólares), informó una nota policial.

Las enmiendas son un instrumento para que legisladores destinen discrecionalmente recursos a proyectos de interés público. Go UP Entertainment fue uno de los 49 blancos de allanamiento e incautación ejecutados este jueves.
Se indaga si recursos asociados a contratos públicos con el instituto sin fines de lucro Conhecer Brasil, presidido por Karina Gama, “posteriormente fueron direccionados” a Go Up Entertainment, según la decisión judicial.
Flávio Bolsonaro afirmó en un acto de campaña que la operación es un “intento de interferencia política”.
El juez del supremo que autorizó la operación es Flávio Dino, exministro de Justicia de Lula.
La campaña de Lula “a la defensiva”
“Dark Horse” quedó en la mira luego de que Flávio Bolsonaro reconociera en mayo haber pedido giros millonarios al banquero Daniel Vorcaro – hoy preso – para supuestamente pagar la película.
La policía indaga si aquellos fondos se usaron en realidad para financiar a otro hijo de Bolsonaro, Eduardo, radicado en Estados Unidos y con una condena en Brasil por coacción a la justicia.
La operación de este jueves corre en paralelo a esta otra investigación.
Por su lado, el campo de Lula muestra preocupación por el eventual impacto en la contienda electoral de la crisis desatada en el supremo, a raíz precisamente del caso Vorcaro, detenido por fraude financiero.
Exministro de Jair Bolsonaro, el juez André Mendonça pidió investigar mensajes del banquero a un número atribuido a su colega Alexandre de Moraes, en los que pedía ayuda para eludir la investigación que luego llevó a su arresto y la liquidación de su banco Master.
Moraes condujo en 2025 el juicio que llevó a la cárcel a Jair Bolsonaro por golpismo. La crisis en el supremo puso a la campaña de Lula a la “defensiva”, dijo una fuente del gobierno bajo el anonimato.
Aunque la fuente atribuyó el momento “delicado” a hechos que no tienen “nada que ver” con Lula, señaló que resultan difíciles de explicar a un electorado que asocia a Moraes al antibolsonarismo.
Dijo confiar en que aún falta correr “mucha agua bajo el puente” hasta las elecciones del 4 de octubre.
El Partido de los Trabajadores de Lula mantuvo este jueves una reunión de su dirigencia en la que se trató del impacto electoral de la polémica, dijo una fuente petista.
