Democrat candidate seen sobbing, praying in patrol car after DUI arrest: Video

Published

on

Washington state Democrat Krista Perez, who is running for a state House seat, was seen on police video admitting to drinking wine, declining field sobriety tests and begging to go home before praying and crying in the back of a patrol car after her DUI arrest.

Perez finished first in last month’s primary in the 29th Legislative District, Position 1, and will face incumbent state Rep. Melanie Morgan, also a Democrat, in November, as the top two candidates advance to the general.

Tacoma Police said Perez’s 2019 Chevrolet Silverado allegedly struck a parked car on South G Street shortly after midnight on August 11, setting off a chain reaction that damaged five vehicles, according to The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red.

Prosecutors charged her with DUI, with a refusal enhancement in connection with the collision and a later encounter with police.

Body camera footage shows police questioning Perez after the crash and her subsequent arrest, while footage from the backseat of the patrol car shows her praying and sobbing, according to video obtained by The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red.

After police arrive at the scene, Perez told an officer she did not understand what was going on and claims she was not involved in an accident, the footage shows.

«Did you get into an accident here?» the officer asks.

«I did not,» Perez responded.

The officer then asked what happened.

«I don’t know. I’ve never been in an accident before,» she replied.

She also said she switched insurers just weeks before the incident when asked for her documents. She was able to tell the officer the name of the insurance company.

Perez told the officer she was driving from a friend’s business on Tacoma Avenue South when the collision happened.

«Did you have anything to drink tonight?» the officer asked.

«I just had some wine while I was there,» Perez replied.

Asked how much wine she had, Perez said she had one glass.

When the officer asked how big the glass was, she told him, «I think you might need to contact the business.»

The officer then asked her to rate her sobriety on a scale of zero to 10, with zero being completely sober.

She first told the officer that she wants to go home. But when asked a second time, she rated herself a four.

The officer then asked her to take standardized field sobriety tests but stated multiple times that the tests are optional.

«So it’s a series of tests that I take you through to make sure to see if you’re impaired by alcohol, or you’re not. Are you okay with doing that? It’s totally voluntary,» he said.

Perez declined the tests, kept saying she wanted to go home and repeatedly said that she was «confused.»

«Not right now. I’d like to go home first,» she said.

«You’re not going to go home first. I’m going to tell you that right now, okay? So your options between the test, yes or no, that’s going to be determined tonight, right now, not when you go home. So would you like to take these tests or no?» the officer asked.

Perez responded by asking if she was allowed to decline the tests.

«You do have a choice. You can either say yes, or you can say no. They’re totally voluntary tests,» the officer answered.

«Yeah, I would like to go home first,» she replied.

The officer asked whether her answer meant she was declining the tests, and she said yes.

She was then told she was under arrest for DUI and to put her hands behind her back.

«Hold on. Hold on. One second. Hold on,» she said.

Perez repeatedly told the officer that she did «not know what any of this means.» He told her it means she is under arrest for DUI.

Under Washington state law, roadside sobriety tests are not required and declining them is separate from the refusal enhancement prosecutors allege in Perez’s case. According to an arrest report cited by The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red, the enhancement stems from what occurred later at Tacoma Police headquarters, where police said she did not provide a usable breath sample after three attempts before the machine timed out.

Inside the patrol car, she can be seen in the footage sobbing, praying and asking God to help her, with her crying lasting several minutes.

«Help me, God. Help me. Help me. Holy Spirit, help me, God,» she said.

State law does not prohibit someone with a DUI charge from serving in the legislature. Other Democrat lawmakers have kept their seats after an alcohol-related incident, including House Majority Leader Joe Fitzgibbon, who apologized after acknowledging he drank alcohol before a House Appropriations Committee hearing in February.

«I made a poor choice last night by drinking alcohol before we had finished our work for the day. I am disappointed in myself and take responsibility for that poor choice. It won’t happen again, and I’m committed to completing my work this session without alcohol,» Fitzgibbon said in a statement at the time to The Jason Rantz Show on Seattle Red.

Panamá necesita recuperar la inversión extranjera para impulsar el empleo, afirma el sector privado

Published

on

Former German spy chief arrested on suspicion of espionage, attempted treason

A former spy chief for Germany’s foreign intelligence service was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of espionage and attempted treason over allegations that he obtained classified documents and used secret information to prepare an analysis for an employee of a foreign intelligence service, prosecutors said.

August Hanning, 80, led Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service, known as the BND, from 1998 to 2005.

According to federal prosecutors, Hanning is «strongly suspected of treasonous espionage, spying out state secrets, attempted treason, and espionage.»

A former aide, identified as Manfred D., was also arrested in western Germany and is accused of aiding and abetting attempted treason and treasonous espionage in connection with the case.

Prosecutors said Manfred D. worked as Hanning’s chief of staff before going on to serve as chief of staff to several of Hanning’s successors at the BND between March 2012 and March 2026, giving him access to confidential information.

Beginning in 2010, the men allegedly reached an agreement under which Manfred D. would routinely transmit intelligence to Hanning in exchange for payment.

The arrangement continued until June 2022, with Manfred D. allegedly providing Hanning with roughly 2,000 documents, many of which contained classified information intended strictly for internal use, according to prosecutors.

Hanning allegedly used the information in his private consulting work.

A spokesperson for the federal prosecutor’s office told German broadcaster RTL that investigators believe Hanning used classified information to prepare an analysis for an employee of a foreign intelligence service.

Prosecutors also said Hanning passed along information following extensive exchanges with an employee of another intelligence service.

German authorities have not publicly identified the foreign intelligence services allegedly involved.

The investigation grew out of an apparently unrelated case involving the 2024 abduction of the children of Hamburg businesswoman Christina Block during a custody dispute.

Prosecutors said Hanning’s arrest stemmed from evidence gathered during that investigation.

Hanning’s arrest marks the first detention of a former head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service, according to Reuters.

Hanning and Manfred D. were expected to appear before a judge at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice following their arrests.

Biden conspicuously absent from campaign trail as Obama, Harris step up for midterm push

Published

on

Former President Joe Biden has been largely absent from the campaign trail as Democrats fight to win back House and Senate majorities in November, even as former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Kamala Harris step up efforts to boost the party’s candidates.

Biden, 83, has kept a limited public schedule while battling advanced, metastatic prostate cancer. He has endorsed candidates and is helping Democrats raise money, according to a source in Biden’s political circle. But the former president has made few political appearances this year.

The contrast is increasingly visible with four weeks to go until Election Day.

Obama is cutting ads for Senate and gubernatorial candidates, helping the party fundraise and preparing to hit the trail during the closing stretch of the midterm campaign. Harris, the Democrats’ 2024 presidential nominee, is also campaigning across key battleground states, including a recent stop in Michigan with Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed.

MIDTERM MATH: THE THREE FORCES THAT COULD STOP A DEMOCRATIC BLUE WAVE

Biden has appeared at just a handful of political events this year. He spoke in February at a reception honoring his 2020 South Carolina primary victory, which propelled him toward the Democratic nomination and eventually the presidency. In June, he addressed a Maryland Democratic Party event.

Longtime Democratic strategist Michael Ceraso told Digital that some in the party’s elite and fundraising class are concerned that «if Biden were to be pushed out there in any sort of way for virtual or in-person opportunities, he could be a liability.»

Veteran Democratic strategist Maria Cardona had a different take, telling Digital, «There are still a ton of Americans who love Joe Biden.»

Biden did weigh in on a handful of Democratic primary showdowns this cycle. The former president endorsed former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms for governor. Bottoms, who served as a senior advisor in the Biden administration, won the Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

The former president also backed Dan Koh, another Biden administration veteran, who captured the Democratic nomination in Massachusetts’ 6th Congressional District.

Biden is also advocating on behalf of efforts to secure democracy.

«American democracy begins and ends at the ballot box. There is no more important civic duty nor fundamental right to be defended,» the former president wrote on social media last month, as he cast his ballot in his home state of Delaware’s primary. «Voting defines our freedom and makes everything possible.»

But mostly, Biden has served as a foil for President Donald Trump, who Biden ousted from the White House in the 2020 election. Four years later, Biden ended his re-election bid after a disastrous debate performance against Trump in their 2024 rematch.

Trump and fellow Republicans are repeatedly blaming Biden for high prices at the gas and diesel pumps, even though public opinion polls indicate most Americans now point fingers at Trump and his administration.

Biden left the presidency with poor approval ratings, as he faced high inflation, foreign policy divides, and lingering questions about his ability to serve in office. He stood at 42% approval and 57% disapproval in January 2025, in the final poll during his White House tenure.

Post-presidency, Biden held a 71% favorable rating among Democrats in a CNN poll conducted in May. But Biden’s favorable rating among Democrats was 25 points lower than Obama’s.

DEMOCRACY ’26: STAY UP TO DATE WITH THE ELECTION HUB

Meanwhile, some Democrats still blame him for Trump’s 2024 re-election, arguing that Biden did not get out of the race in time to allow Harris to mount a successful campaign.

Ceraso, a veteran of two presidential campaigns, pointed to the 2024 election and told Digital that Biden left a «bad taste with some Democrats, especially within the party’s elite and fundraising class.»

He added, «I do not think Biden has the same level of charisma as Vice President Harris and former President Obama, and if I’m organizing an event to get thousands of people to come out, I would not do that around Biden.»

Cardona, a Democratic National Committee member, said Biden’s health is stifling requests for campaign trail appearances.

«I guarantee you no one would try to bother him to come campaign for them while, at 83 years old, he is battling cancer and in the toughest fight of his life,» Cardona emphasized.

Digital reached out to a Biden spokesman for comment, but did not receive a response at the time this story was published.
