Democrats who ‘never voted Republican’ back Rogers over El-Sayed in razor-close race

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
EXCLUSIVE – DETROIT, MI – Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers has a message for Democrats who are far from happy with their party’s nominee in battleground Michigan: «You have a home with us.»
Rogers, a former congressman and former FBI agent who is running a second straight time for the Senate after losing by a slim margin two years ago, on Thursday stood alongside a group of voters as he unveiled his «Democrats for Mike Rogers» coalition during a campaign event at a residence in a western Detroit neighborhood.
After a combustible and divisive Democratic Senate primary, where Abdul El-Sayed narrowly edged more moderate Rep. Haley Stevens for the nomination, Rogers is heavily courting Democrats disaffected with their left-wing nominee, as he works to flip a crucial Democrat-held Senate seat in the midterm elections.
«To Democrat voters who feel their nominee doesn’t represent them and their values, all hope is not lost. I’m not asking you to be a Republican. I’m asking you for the opportunity to earn your trust. .. our door is open,» Rogers said as he referred to Democratic voters uncomfortable with some of El-Sayed’s controversial past comments and far-left policy positions.

A new public opinion survey from AARP indicated El-Sayed and Rogers locked in a margin-of-error race. And in a Fox News poll conducted Aug. 6-10 and released last week, Rogers held a slight four-point edge.
Rogers’ advantage in the Fox News poll was fueled largely by stronger party unity among Republicans. Nearly all Republicans (96%), including both MAGA (99%) and non-MAGA Republicans (89%), backed Rogers, the poll indicates.
El-Sayed’s support among Democrats was slightly lower, at 91%. While 98% of self-described Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) supporters backed El-Sayed, that number dropped to 69% of non-DSA Democrats and independents.
«We definitely think it’s an opening. This is going to be a tight race. It’s Michigan,» Rogers said in an exclusive Fox News Digital interview following the campaign event. «We’re going to take advantage of the fact that people are pausing to think if he [El-Sayed] represents their values.»
Rogers highlighted that Democrats «who have never voted for a Republican in their life, they’re going to vote for me. We take encouragement in that. It’s inspiring. It’s going to show that…values do matter in this election, and we’re going to be talking to a lot of people that would not normally have…an opening with a Republican.»
One of those Democrats who stood alongside Rogers identified herself as Chelsea from West Bloomfield, Michigan.
«I’m a lifelong Democrat. I voted for Obama. I voted for Hillary. I voted for Biden. I voted for Slotkin. I heavily supported Haley Stevens throughout her race and now I’m voting for Mike Rogers because sometimes the election calls for us to look at something bigger than our party lines,» Chelsea explained.

Pointing to El-Sayed, she emphasized «the Democratic nominee that we’ve been given does not share my values and he does not agree with a world that I want my children to grow up in.»
Responding to the event, the El-Sayed campaign highlighted Rogers’ ties to President Donald Trump, who is supporting the GOP nominee.
«Mike Rogers will put Donald Trump ahead of Michigan every single time. Just like he carried water for Trump’s dangerous election lies, he’ll rubber-stamp Trump’s reckless agenda—driving up gas prices and sending your tax dollars to fight foreign wars,» El-Sayed campaign spokesperson Cole Wozniak charged in a statement to Fox News.
Wozniak added, «Abdul’s the only candidate with a coalition that can win this November and will get right to work in the US Senate getting money out of politics and putting money in your pockets.»
A former Wayne County Health Department director, El-Sayed, if elected in November, would make history as the nation’s first Muslim senator. He is an epidemiologist who unsuccessfully ran for governor as an insurgent candidate in 2018. He has made support for Medicare for all a major component of his campaign.
El-Sayed, who was endorsed and joined on the primary campaign trail by progressive champions Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, has also called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is a vocal critic of Israel during its war with Hamas —characterizing Israel’s actions in Gaza as «genocide» against Palestinians.
WHAT THE LATEST FOX NEWS POWER RANKINGS IN THE MIDTERM RACES SHOW

Rabbi Asher Lopatin speaks at a campaign event spotlighting Democrats supporting Republican Senate nominee in Michigan, former Rep. Mike Rogers, on Aug. 20, 2026, in Detroit, Michigan (Paul Steinhauser/Fox News)
Rabbi Asher Lopatin of Huntington Woods, Michigan, who also joined Rogers at the campaign roll out, told Fox News Digital, «I do have a lot of issues with a lot of policies of the Trump administration. I do have concerns about the Supreme Court. But it’s more important to make a statement that we cannot let someone like Abdul El-Sayed get into the Senate.»
Lopatin said that Jewish voters who «normally vote Democrat are going to vote for Mike Rogers, and I’m hearing that. And there’s a growing movement like that. And I think the more they meet him…the more they’re going to feel comfortable voting for a Republican, sometimes the first time in their lives.»
The rabbi also pointed to a state Democratic Party convention in April, where there was hostility towards anyone who openly supported Israel. Stevens, a strong Israel supporter, was booed at the convention.
«Many people I talked to, many super progressive people, are really traumatized by the way they were treated, and the way Haley Stevens was booed, and the way other candidates were treated. It’s a violent, uncivil kind of setup for politics, and that’s the biggest danger: taking away civility from politics,» Lopatin said.

Asked about concerns from Jewish voters, Rogers told Fox News Digital, «I’ve talked to two young women who were at University of Michigan, who were afraid to walk to class. They couldn’t display their Star of David. To say that they’re afraid is probably an understatement.»
He said «the violent rhetoric [is] going to make a difference» in the general election.
El-Sayed’s sharp criticism towards Israel and AIPAC, a powerful Israel-aligned political group that has long been a major player in American elections, were a central part of his primary campaign.
But two weeks ago, after winning the nomination, El-Sayed emphasized, «My commitment to Jewish safety is the same as my commitment to the safety of my own kids. We have a responsibility to take on antisemitism in all of its forms, wherever we see it.»

9/11 hero’s memory preserved through massive effort to ‘do good’ for vets, first responders: ‘His legacy’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
On one of the darkest days in America’s history, New York City firefighter Stephen Siller strapped on his gear and ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the collapsing Twin Towers, ultimately giving his life to save those caught in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Two and a half decades later, Tunnel to Towers, founded by Siller’s family, has continued his legacy through its commitment to «do good» for veterans and first responders and their families across the country.
Since its founding, inspired by Siller and his favorite quote, «While we have time, let us do good,» Tunnel to Towers has provided more than 1,700 mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to disabled veterans and first responders. The organization has also delivered housing assistance and support services to more than 20,000 homeless veterans and holds hundreds of events nationwide to honor America’s heroes and preserve the memory of those who lost their lives for future generations.
Tunnel to Towers CEO Frank Siller, the brother of the 34-year-old firefighter who gave his life on Sept. 11, previously warned in 2020 that America was «very close to forgetting the impact 9/11 had on our nation.» Now, with anti-American sentiment on the rise and some online commentators belittling the Sept. 11 attacks or even justifying them, many worry the legacy of those who lost their lives, including the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department who made the ultimate sacrifice, will be forgotten.
Siller, however, has vowed that «Tunnel to Towers will never let that happen.»
9/11 IS BECOMING HISTORY. MY GENERATION MUST MAKE SURE AMERICA NEVER FORGETS

The Tunnel to Towers 9/11 Institute has helped to educate students from kindergarten through 12th grade on the «extraordinary heroism and goodness of everyday people» on Sept. 11, «while demonstrating the strength and resilience of America’s spirit.» Its mobile 9/11 exhibit has traveled to nearly all 50 states as well as Canada.
This year, Tunnel to Towers launched its «Steel Across America» display, in which a 16,000-pound steel beam pulled from the wreckage of the World Trade Center traveled more than 10,500 miles to 35 stops across 21 states and the District of Columbia, culminating in New York City.

To mark the 25th anniversary, Tunnel to Towers also launched its 343 Homes Initiative this year to honor the 343 New York firefighters who died on Sept. 11. According to the group, this initiative will deliver 343 mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen service members and fallen first responders as well as to catastrophically injured service members across the country.
This initiative builds on Tunnel to Towers’ «In the Line of Duty Programs,» which have provided more than 1,700 mortgage-free homes to the families of fallen service members and first responders, as well as to catastrophically injured veterans and first responders. More than 220 of those homes have been custom «Smart Homes,» modified to be fully accessible to catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

Republican convention attendees share heartfelt tributes to late Charlie Kirk on assassination anniversary

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
DALLAS, Texas – A year after the shocking assassination of conservative titan and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, Republicans gathered at the GOP’s midterm convention shared the profound ways in which the young leader and family man impacted their lives.
«Charlie Kirk is a wonderful man, and he is very much missed,» Marsha Landry of Texas told Fox News Digital during an interview at the American Airlines Center, where the Republican Party is rallying to try to keep control of the House and Senate in November. «He was making a lot of progress in this country, especially among the youth. I know personally some of our children have really started paying attention.»
Jacquez Jones, a young convention attendee, said Kirk’s legacy lives on.

«It’s a daily reminder that we have to have courage to go out there and spread the message, not only of just conservatism, but our faith as well,» he said. «And so on this anniversary, I look back at not only what Charlie Kirk was able to accomplish, but the things that even in his passing he’s still able to do.»
On this day last year, Kirk, 31, was speaking at Turning Point’s «American Comeback Tour» event at the Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, Utah, just after noon, when he was shot in the neck. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly thereafter.
The suspect in the killing, then-22-year-old Tyler Robinson, is accused of firing one shot from a rooftop overlooking the quad where Kirk was speaking. A shocked crowd scattered as Kirk was rushed away from the scene.
Kirk, who was a father, left behind his wife Erika and two young children.

«I think it’s an extremely somber reminder of what we have in this country, that free speech is not free, that somebody died for that right, and Charlie Kirk [was] somebody who was brave enough to go out there on the college campuses and talk about conservatism and prove to the American people and the young generation that the conservative policies still work,» Jones said.
Another Republican convention-goer, Mike Hurst of Mississippi, described what he remembers after first hearing the news that Kirk had been killed.
«It was one of the most gut-wrenching feelings I’ve ever seen, and of course, I went online, I saw the video, and to this day I’m still shocked that that could happen in our country,» Hurst said, adding that we need more people like Kirk who encourage civil dialogue instead of political violence.

Robinson allegedly fled the rooftop, ditched his rifle in a wooded area across the street from the UVU campus, and fled the scene. A statewide manhunt persisted until the following night at around 10 p.m. when Robinson surrendered to authorities in St. George, Utah, about four hours south of the UVU campus.

His parents reportedly convinced him to turn himself in.
Pre-trial proceedings in Robinson’s case are ongoing after a protracted battle regarding media access to the courtroom, and motions attempting to remove the death penalty as a possible sentence should Robinson be convicted.
Alex Stone of Missouri said young people are looking for a leader to fill Kirk’s shoes, though his memory remains.
«Since Charlie’s assassination, people have been lost,» he said. «People have been looking for a voice or a leader to lead them in the right direction, and so we need people who are going to stand up and rise up and say, ‘this is what is good, this is what is true, this what is beautiful.’ And ‘this is wrong, and here’s what we should do in the face of it.’»
