House Republicans aim to turn Democratic civil war into midterm weapon

NEW CITY, N.Y. – The battle for the House majority will be won or lost in congressional districts like New York-17, NY-3, and NY-4, three crucial swing seats in suburban New York City.
And as Republicans work to hold onto their razor-thin House majority in this autumn’s midterm elections, they view the ongoing battle between the left-wing and the center-left establishment for the future of the Democratic Party as political ammunition as they portray Democrats as radicals.
«Democrats have gone further and further and further to the left with no end in sight,» Republican Rep. Mike Lawler argued in a Fox News Digital interview.
Lawler, a two-term lawmaker who represents NY-17, which covers much of New York City’s northern suburbs, spoke soon after three far-left Democrats backed by socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani defeated more moderate, establishment-backed rivals in showdowns that drew outsized national attention.

Two of primary winners were aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and two of the defeated candidates were congressional incumbents.
«My district is impacted significantly by what happens in New York City. Many of my constituents work in the city, they’re cops, firefighters, nurses, teachers,» Lawler said.
He charged that «these radical socialists are taking over the Democratic Party, not just for Congress, but the state legislature. And as I said last year, Zohran Mamdani would become the face of the Democratic Party and its leader, and that is precisely what he is doing.»
Lawler’s Democratic challenger in the midterms is not backed by either the DSA or two other far-left groups, the Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party.

But Lawler, pointing to Democratic nominee Cait Conley’s stance on key issues, argued, «The fact is that she agrees with them from a policy standpoint, even if she doesn’t couch herself in the same title of socialist.»
«My opponent would be a rubber stamp for the radical socialists who are coming, and she wouldn’t have the ability to stand up to these people and push back, and the fact is the Democrats have gone further and further and further to the left with no end in sight,» he charged.
But Rep. Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said that any GOP push to paint Democrats as far left radicals are «desperate attacks.»
«The midterms will ultimately be a referendum on who is going to lower costs and help improve the lives of everyday Americans – which House Republicans have failed spectacularly to do. In the purple, majority making districts, » DelBene argued in a statement to Fox News Digital.
She charged that «Republicans already know they’ve lost the American people, and that’s why they are resorting to desperate attacks that aren’t actually about the pocketbook issues, but just baseless spin that falls flat with voters who are eager to reject Republicans.»
Conley, a West Point graduate and military combat veteran who was awarded three Bronze Stars during six deployments to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, pushed back on Lawler’s criticism.

«Voters are sick of political insiders, politicians, political operatives who care more about their next reelection than they do solving the actual problems with the time they are given to represent their people,» Conley told Fox News Digital, indicating Lawler, a political strategist before serving as a state lawmaker and then winning election to Congress.
Conley emphasized that «we need new leaders, not people who are part of the political insider network.»
The race in NY-17 is among two to three dozen across the country that will determine if the GOP holds its razor-thin House majority.
So are the showdowns in NY-3 and NY-4, which are located in New York City’s eastern suburbs on Long Island.
«I think it will definitely affect us in Nassau County since we’re a border county,» Jeanine Driscoll, the GOP nominee in NY-4 told Fox News Digital, as she referred to the far-left Democratic victories in neighboring New York City. «Bringing in three ultra left wing people who are proclaiming themselves to be socialists, really communists, is going to wake people up.»

Driscoll, the receiver of taxes in the town of Hempstead, America’s largest township by population, is challenging Democratic Rep. Laura Gillen, who flipped the district two years ago.
Just to the north, in NY-3, Republican nominee Mike LePetri is facing off against veteran Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who narrowly topped LePetri in 2024.
«Frankly, the people of Long Island and northeast Queens are scared. They’re concerned about the future of America if you have the Democrat Party take over the House of Representatives,» LePetri told Fox News Digital.
Gillen and Suozzi are among a group of moderate House Democrats who earlier this year launched the «Promise to America,» a centrist political pledge that rejects socialism, supports secure borders, and promotes fiscal responsibility and economic growth.
«I call myself a new kind of old-fashioned Democrat. Someone who believes in the traditional values,» Suozzi said in a recent «Fox and Friends» interview.
Suozzi emphasized, «We’re for capitalism, not socialism. We’re for safety, not lawlessness. We’re proud of America. Not ashamed of America. And we need to be promoting those things.»
«There are people in the Democratic Party that are left of center that don’t agree with the far left. And we just need to do a better job organizing because you’ll see big rallies for people who are extremists, far right, far left, but if I show up and say ‘hey lets work together to solve the problems that we face in our country,’ you’re not going to get a big rally for that,» Suozzi said.
But LePetri charged that Suozzi «is two faced. He says one thing, but votes exactly with his conference.»
And Driscoll, speaking of Gillam, argued, «they claim they’re moderate. If you look at her voting record, her voting record is not moderate.»
Top Republicans are using the recent victories by the far-left as a cudgel to bash Democrats in competitive races.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of a «communist» threat.
Vice President JD Vance argued recently on Fox News’ «The Ingraham Angle» that Democrats have «a view that the United States is an evil country that must be dismantled from the ground and then built back up. That’s communism at its core, and you see more and more momentum in that direction from the Democrat Party.»
But CJ Warnke, communications director at the Democrat-aligned House Majority PAC, told of Fox News Digital that «Republicans are grasping for straws because they have no record of success to run on. They’ve spent the last year supporting tariffs, health care cuts, and the Iran War — all of which have caused prices to skyrocket. Their poll numbers are sinking and this is a desperate ploy to save their campaigns — and it will fail.»

El empleo cae sorpresivamente en EE.UU. y aumenta la incertidumbre económica en un año electoral clave
Estados Unidos perdió 23.000 puestos de trabajo en julio, bastante más de lo que habían vaticinado los expertos, y mostró así que el mercado laboral continúa complicado e inestable, mientras los estadounidenses siguen peleando con un repunte de inflación provocado por la guerra de Irán y la política arancelaria del gobierno de Donald Trump.
La cifra fue revelada este viernes en el informe mensual de empleo del gobierno federal, que supuso una disminución respecto a los 57.000 empleos añadidos en junio. Es un golpe a las afirmaciones del presidente Trump, que asegura liderar una recuperación económica, y surge a menos de tres meses de unas cruciales elecciones legislativas en noviembre, en las que la máxima preocupación de los ciudadanos es la economía y la inflación, según las encuestas.
La creación de empleo cayó en el sector de los gobiernos locales, la educación y el comercio minorista, mientras que siguió avanzando en la atención en salud.
A pesar de esos números, el desempleo disminuyó de 4,2% a un 4,1% en julio y sigue siendo bajo según los estándares históricos, según informó la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales. La caída, explicaron los expertos, se debe a la constante disminución del índice de participación en la población activa de los estadounidenses en edad de trabajar, con una población envejecida y menos inmigrantes.
La cifra de pérdida de puestos de trabajo registrada en julio comienza a mostrar grietas en el que mercado laboral que hasta ahora parecía bastante resiliente y que no había sido profundamente afectado este año por la suba de combustibles causada por la guerra en Irán y los costos de la cadena de suministros por ese conflicto y también por la política arancelaria del gobierno republicano.
Sin embargo, un informe gubernamental emitido la semana pasada mostró una desaceleración más pronunciada del producto interior bruto durante los tres meses que terminaron en junio, lo que sugiere tensión en la economía subyacente durante los primeros meses de la guerra.
Estados Unidos añadió una media de 92.000 empleos al mes durante la primera mitad de 2026, según datos de la Oficina de Estadísticas Laborales de EE.UU. Ese ritmo supone una mejora respecto a una media de unos 7.000 empleos perdidos al mes en la segunda mitad de 2025.
La Reserva Federal optó por mantener los tipos de interés estables en su reunión de la semana pasada, pero los banqueros centrales parecían divididos ante la medida. Tres de los 12 miembros de la junta de formulación de políticas de la Fed votaron a favor de una subida de tipos, lo que supone el mayor número de disidentes que votan en la misma dirección desde 2016.
La tasa de referencia se sitúa en un nivel entre el 3,5% y el 3,75%. Esa cifra supone una caída significativa respecto al pico reciente alcanzado en 2023, pero los costos de préstamo siguen muy por encima de la tasa del 0% establecida al inicio de la pandemia de COVID-19.
El presidente de la Fed, Kevin Warsh, que asumió la dirección del banco central este verano, ha prometido repetidamente reducir la inflación. «El comité sigue firme -ya lo han oído antes- en que lograremos estabilidad de precios», dijo Warsh a periodistas en Washington D.C. la semana pasada.
La guerra contra Irán hizo que los precios del combustible subieran y catapultaran la inflación a un máximo de tres años en mayo. Un acuerdo preliminar de paz en junio ofreció cierto alivio, pero una oleada de combates intermitentes en las últimas semanas hizo que los precios del crudo subieran de nuevo.
La combinación de una inflación elevada y un mercado laboral resiliente ha aumentado las posibilidades de una subida de los tipos de interés, según muestran los mercados de futuros. Los inversores sitúan las probabilidades de una subida de un cuarto de punto el próximo mes en alrededor del 56%, según la FedWatch del CMEGroup.
Sin embargo, el lento rendimiento de julio podría complicar un posible aumento de tasas el mes que viene, dijo Diane Swonk, economista jefe de KPMG, a ABC.
«Esto no elimina una subida de tipos en el mes de septiembre, pero hace que ahora sea mucho más riesgoso para el mercado laboral si la inflación sigue siendo persistente», dijo Swonk.
Pero ahora hay dudas. Chris Zaccarelli, de Northlight Asset Management, señaló que «el informe de esta mañana cambia las reglas de juego en el sentido de que toda la atención reciente se había centrado en la inflación y este informe también resalta los riesgos que están presentes en el mercado laboral», afirmó.

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing pushback online over a resurfaced clip in which he says he «hates» arguably the most treasured location in the state.
In the documentary clip from 2020, which resurfaced in a story by The Midwesterner Friday, El-Sayed walks through Michigan’s Mackinac Island during his failed run for governor.
«I hate Mackinac so much,» El-Sayed said of one of the state’s most recognizable vacation spots, which sits on an island in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsula’s.
«It’s funny cause, like, if we win, this is gonna be, like, the summer home,» El-Sayed added, referencing the governor’s summer residence on the island.

Some, including journalist Brad LaPlante, defended El-Sayed’s comments as being taken «out of context.»
«El-Sayed was talking about the Mackinac Policy Conference, an annual gathering of policy pros and insiders that he argues brings together well-connected and powerful people and shuts most voters out of politics,» LaPlante wrote.
Others weren’t so sure, including Michigan Young Republicans board member James Asher, who responded in a post on X, «Brad, are you dizzy from the way you’re spinning this?»
Mackinac Island is beloved in large part because it has retained a character increasingly rare in American tourist destinations. Motor vehicles have been largely prohibited since the 1890s, leaving visitors to travel by foot, bicycle or the island’s famous horse-drawn carriages.
The island has Victorian homes, historic hotels, waterfront streets, natural scenery and celebrated fudge shops which draw more than a million visitors from around the world each summer, while landmarks such as the Grand Hotel and Fort Mackinac have helped make the island an enduring symbol of Michigan history and culture.
Fox News Digital reached out to El-Sayed’s campaign for comment but did not receive a response.
El-Sayed responded to the post from End Wokeness on Friday afternoon saying, «Not sure about ‘End Wokeness,’ but I don’t think the most ‘American place in MI’ can be a place that…bans cars.»

DNPA decomisa 103 paquetes de supuesta marihuana ocultos en un vehículo durante operativo en Colón
Agentes de la Dirección Nacional Policial Antidrogas (DNPA) decomisaron 103 paquetes de supuesta marihuana ocultos en un compartimiento secreto de un vehículo durante un operativo realizado en el municipio de Sabá, departamento de Colón, como parte de las acciones para combatir el tráfico de drogas en la zona.
El decomiso fue ejecutado por equipos de la DNPA, con apoyo de la Dirección Nacional de Prevención y Seguridad Comunitaria (DNPSC), luego de desarrollar labores de vigilancia e inteligencia que permitieron ubicar un vehículo presuntamente utilizado para el transporte de sustancias ilícitas.
Durante la operación, los agentes realizaron una inspección minuciosa al automotor, detectando un compartimiento oculto en la parte inferior de la cabina, donde se encontraba la presunta droga.
De acuerdo con el informe policial, la revisión permitió descubrir un espacio acondicionado para ocultar la carga y dificultar su detección durante controles de seguridad.
En el interior del compartimiento fueron encontrados 103 paquetes de supuesta marihuana, distribuidos en 51 paquetes dobles y un paquete sencillo.
Las autoridades detallaron que todos los envoltorios estaban cubiertos con plástico transparente, una modalidad utilizada para proteger la sustancia y facilitar su transporte.
El hallazgo fue documentado por los agentes antidrogas como parte de las diligencias investigativas correspondientes.
Tras el decomiso de la presunta droga, las autoridades también aseguraron el vehículo utilizado para su transporte.
El automotor quedó bajo custodia de la Dirección Nacional Policial Antidrogas, mientras continúan las investigaciones para determinar la procedencia de la carga y establecer quiénes estarían involucrados en el caso.
La evidencia será incorporada al expediente que será remitido al Ministerio Público, encargado de continuar con el proceso legal correspondiente.
La DNPA informó que este tipo de acciones forman parte de la estrategia permanente que ejecuta la institución para combatir el tráfico ilícito de drogas en diferentes sectores del país.
Las autoridades señalaron que el departamento de Colón continúa siendo una de las zonas donde se desarrollan operativos constantes de vigilancia, inspección y seguimiento para detectar rutas utilizadas por organizaciones dedicadas al narcotráfico.
Asimismo, indicaron que los controles en carreteras y puntos estratégicos seguirán fortaleciéndose como parte de los esfuerzos para impedir el traslado de sustancias ilícitas.
La Policía Nacional confirmó que las investigaciones continúan con el objetivo de identificar a las personas responsables del transporte de la supuesta droga y determinar si existen vínculos con estructuras criminales dedicadas al narcotráfico.
Las autoridades no brindaron detalles sobre capturas relacionadas con este caso, pero señalaron que las diligencias continúan en coordinación con las instancias competentes.
La DNPA reiteró que mantendrá los operativos antidrogas en diferentes regiones del país como parte de las acciones para reducir el tráfico de estupefacientes y fortalecer la seguridad.
El decomiso realizado en Sabá se suma a otras operaciones ejecutadas recientemente por la institución en el marco de la estrategia nacional contra el crimen organizado.
La Dirección Nacional Policial Antidrogas (DNPA) indicó que los paquetes decomisados serán remitidos a las autoridades competentes para realizar los análisis correspondientes y confirmar oficialmente el tipo y la cantidad de la sustancia incautada.
Asimismo, toda la evidencia será puesta a disposición del Ministerio Público, que continuará con el proceso investigativo y las acciones legales derivadas del caso.
Las autoridades reiteraron que este tipo de operativos forman parte de la estrategia permanente para combatir el tráfico ilícito de drogas y desarticular las rutas utilizadas por organizaciones criminales para movilizar estupefacientes dentro del territorio nacional.
La DNPA aseguró que continuará fortaleciendo los controles en carreteras y puntos estratégicos del país para impedir el transporte de sustancias ilegales y llevar ante la justicia a los responsables.
