Chinese officials cover up sinking of country’s newest nuclear-powered submarine tied to pier
The Chinese government reportedly covered up the sinking of its newest nuclear-powered submarine as it sat tied to a pier, and U.S. officials say it is no surprise.
«It’s not surprising that the PLA Navy would try to conceal the fact that their new first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank pierside,» a senior U.S. Defense official said. «In addition to the obvious questions about training standards and equipment quality, the incident raises deeper questions about the PLA’s internal accountability and oversight of China’s defense industry, which has long been plagued by corruption.»
China’s first Zhou-class submarine likely sank between May and June, The Associated Press reported based on information from an official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Satellite images showed cranes in the area that would have been necessary to salvage the vessel from the bottom of the river.
The incident reportedly forced Chinese authorities to rush to cover up the matter, which had not been previously disclosed.

China has previously said it is building a world-class military so it can deter aggression and protect its overseas interests.
Last year, the Pentagon announced it had discovered in a little-known report that China’s military adopted a policy of keeping at least one nuclear-capable submarine at sea at all times.
China maintains a fleet of six nuclear-capable submarines, carrying missiles that could hit the continental U.S. from the South China Sea.

The report on China’s new submarine activity came just as the U.S., U.K. and Australia entered an agreement for the production and sale of nuclear-powered attack submarines. Australia was also expected to purchase the vessels to modernize its fleet.

The attack submarines are prime candidates for tracking missile submarines like those China has deployed, and increasing Australia’s capabilities will take some pressure off U.S. and U.K. forces in the region.

French Parliament member wants US to return Statue of Liberty: ‘Apparently you despise it’
A French Parliament member is demanding that the U.S. return the Statue of Liberty to France, who gifted it to the Americans in the 1880s.
Center-left politician Raphaël Glucksmann made the comments at a recent convention of his political party, Place Publique.
«We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty,’» he told supporters, according to Le Monde, a French newspaper.
«We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So, it will be just fine here at home,» he added.

France presented the Statue of Liberty to America on July 4, 1884, before it was later unveiled in New York City on Oct. 28, 1886, by then-President Grover Cleveland for the centennial of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
The statue was designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and weighs about 450,000 pounds and stands at 305 feet tall.
A much smaller copy of the statue is displayed on Allée des Cygnes, a small island on the Seine River in Paris. The Lady Liberty replica was gifted to France by the U.S. in 1889 to mark 100 years since the French Revolution.

Glucksmann, a staunch supporter of Ukraine in its war against Russia, has panned President Donald Trump for pulling back support for the country in its fight against Moscow’s invasion since February 2022.
He also criticized Trump for cutting federal funding to U.S. colleges and research institutions, a move that led to a French government initiative aiming to bring some of them to France.

«The second thing we’re going to say to the Americans is: if you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world’s leading power, then we’re going to welcome them,» Glucksmann said.
Glucksmann also criticized right-wing members of the French Parliament for being a «fan club» for Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, a senior advisor to Trump who also leads the Department of Government Efficiency.

De momento no está claro cuántas personas iban a bordo del avión de la empresa Lanhsa, aunque el subdirector de Aeronáutica Civil, Jorge Corrales, dijo escuetamente a periodistas que según el informe preliminar que se tiene, en la aeronave viajaban quince pasajeros y dos pilotos. Luego, los Bomberos y la Policía amplió la cifra a 18.
El incidente ocurrió en las inmediaciones del Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Manuel Gálvez, de la isla de Roatán, en el Caribe de Honduras.

Corrales manifestó que solamente se sabe que hay varios lesionados y que el aparato se dirigía hacia el Aeropuerto Internacional Guillermo Anderson, ubicado en la ciudad de La Ceiba, en tierra firme, siempre en el Caribe, donde debió aterrizar en el Aeropuerto Internacional Guillermo Anderson.
Por otro lado, la comisionada presidenta del Sistema Nacional de Emergencias 911 de Honduras, Miroslava Cerpas, detalló que la aeronave perdió fuerza en sus motores al momento del despegue, lo que habría provocado su caída al mar.
Por su parte, Carlos Padilla, un responsable de Aeronáutica Civil, señaló que el avión «al momento del despegue sufrió un viraje brusco hacia el lado derecho de la pista, cayendo al agua», mientras que la Policía sostuvo que el avión Jetstream 41 «sufrió una aparente falla mecánica al momento del despegue» y perdió su rumbo.
Según informaron fuentes oficiales, el avión, que cayó a aproximadamente un kilómetro de la pista, se incendió al impactar.
La Policía Nacional y la Fuerza Naval Hondureña, junto a cuerpos de bomberos, participan en las tareas de búsqueda y rescate.

La presidenta hondureña, Xiomara Castro de Zelaya, informó que en el rescate interviene el Comité de Operaciones de Emergencia (COE) «conformado por las FF. AA., los Bomberos de Honduras, COPECO, Policía Nacional, 911, Cruz Roja, la Secretaría de Salud, SAN, quienes de manera inmediata han llegado a la zona de accidente».
Los socorristas comenzaron a trasladar a los lesionados a un hospital de Roatán, tras un rescate dificultado porque el accidente se registró cuando ya no había luz de día. Fuentes oficiales informan que hay 8 cuerpos que aún no pudieron ser retirados de la aeronave.

The U.S. military recently launched fighter jets with the intent of targeting Houthi forces in Yemen, new video shows.
Fox News obtained the dramatic video that shows the jets taking off towards the terrorist targets. It comes soon after President Donald Trump launched «decisive and powerful» airstrikes against the Iran-backed organization, which has targeted commercial merchant vessels and U.S. military ships for several months.
«It has been over a year since a U.S.-flagged commercial ship safely sailed through the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, or the Gulf of Aden,» Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Saturday. «The last American Warship to go through the Red Sea, four months ago, was attacked by the Houthis over a dozen times.»
«Funded by Iran, the Houthi thugs have fired missiles at U.S. aircraft, and targeted our Troops and Allies,» the president continued. «These relentless assaults have cost the U.S. and World Economy many BILLIONS of Dollars while, at the same time, putting innocent lives at risk.»

Since the strikes began on Saturday, Houthi drone, missile and air defense systems have been targeted by American forces. A senior defense official told Fox News on Sunday that at least a dozen Houthi drones have been shot down by U.S. forces so far.
On Monday, Joint Staff Director for Operations Lt. Gen. Alexus Grynkewich told reporters that «dozens of military casualties» had so far been counted.
The Houthis claimed 53 people had been killed as of Monday, including five children, but that has not been confirmed by the U.S. military.
