Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadorian migrant who was erroneously deported to El Salvador before being returned to the U.S. to face federal prosecution last week, pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of human trafficking and conspiracy charges.

Garcia’s legal team told U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes on Friday that they have had time to review the indictment, and Garcia understands what he is accused of, before he formally entered the plea, which stems from a 2022 traffic stop.

Abrego Garcia is charged with the trafficking of undocumented migrants, and conspiring with others to do so.

The criminal case against Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 member, comes after a high-profile, protracted legal fight over his deportation and the Trump administration’s efforts to delay his return to the U.S., even after the Supreme Court ordered the administration to «facilitate» his release earlier this year.

Special Agent Peter T. Joseph told prosecutors on Friday that he was first assigned to Abrego Garcia’s case in April 2025, when he was still detained in El Salvador.

Since then, Joseph said, he has reviewed footage from Abrego Garcia’s 2022 traffic stop, which has emerged as the basis of the human smuggling charges.

At the time, Joseph told prosecutors, Abrego Garcia had been driving a vehicle with nine passengers and was pulled over while driving from St. Louis to Maryland with an expired license.

Six of the nine passengers in the vehicle have since been identified as being in the U.S. illegally, Joseph said, adding that one passenger in the van told officers that he was born in 2007, which would have made him just 15 at the time.

Abrego Garcia’s legal team has vehemently disputed his alleged status as an MS-13 member, and are expected to contest the effort by U.S. prosecutors to have him detained pending trial.

His case has become a national flashpoint in the broader fight over Trump’s hard-line immigration policies in his second White House term.

In a court filing Wednesday night, lawyers for Abrego Garcia urged U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes in Tennessee to release their client from custody while awaiting trial, arguing that the government’s grounds for a detention hearing – and his alleged status as an MS-13 gang member – are meritless.

«Mr. Abrego Garcia asks the Court for what he has been denied the past several months – due process,» his lawyers said, adding that there is no evidence their client is a flight risk, or that he has «systematically engaged in international travel in the recent past.»

Abrego Garcia’s attorneys have also disputed his status as a member of MS-13, which was based on allegations made by a confidential informant, according to court documents. The informant had alleged Abrego Garcia belonged to an MS-13 chapter in New York, where he had never lived.

Speaking at a press conference in Nashville before the arraignment, Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, told reporters that yesterday marked three months since her husband was «abducted and disappeared» by the Trump administration.

She said the two were able to speak for the first time on Thursday.

«Kilmar wants you to have faith,» Sura said. «He says to continue fighting, and I will be victorious because God is with us.’»

Sura noted that their son, Kilmar Jr., was currently attending his kindergarten graduation ceremony in Maryland. «My heart is in Maryland with my kids,» she said, her voice breaking with emotion. «But I’m here fighting for my husband, for his dad to come back home.»

Federal prosecutors disputed that and have urged the judge to keep him in custody, saying in a filing of their own that Abrego Garcia «would have enormous reason to flee» if he were not immediately detained by ICE.

Court documents show the Justice Department filed the charges against Abrego Garcia on May 21– prompting a flurry of questions as to when the investigation and impaneling of a grand jury would have taken place.

Abrego Garcia’s family sued the Trump administration in March after the Salvadoran man, who entered the country illegally around 2012 and was living in Maryland, was abruptly deported to El Salvador in March. An immigration judge had ruled in 2019 that he could be deported, just not to El Salvador.

Upon being returned to the U.S. last week, Abrego Garcia was immediately sent to Tennessee to face federal charges related to transporting undocumented immigrants.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday said the U.S. had «nothing to do with» Israel’s attack against Iran but warned that any attack against the U.S. would be met with the «full strength and might» of the U.S. military.

«The U.S. had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight,» Trump wrote on Truth Social in the early morning hours of Sunday.

«If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before,» he continued. «However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!»

Trump’s comments came hours after the Israel Defense Forces claimed responsibility for a series of strikes on the headquarters of the Iranian Defense Ministry and a nuclear project, while Tehran unleashed a fresh barrage of deadly strikes.

«The IDF completed an extensive series of strikes on targets in Tehran related to the Iranian regime’s nuclear weapons project,» the IDF wrote on X. «The targets included the Iranian Ministry of Defense headquarters, the headquarters of the SPND nuclear project, and additional targets, which advanced the Iranian regime’s efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon and where the Iranian regime hid its nuclear archive.»

Despite Trump’s statement, Iran says it has evidence that the U.S. was involved in the attack.

«We have solid proof of the support of the American forces and American bases in the region for the attacks of the Zionist regime military forces,» Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told foreign diplomats in a meeting broadcast on state TV.

The attacks traded by Israel and Iran represented the latest violence since a surprise offensive by Israel two days earlier seeking to decimate Tehran’s nuclear program.

At least 10 Israeli victims were killed and at least 180 were injured in Iranian missile strikes overnight, while casualty figures were not immediately available in Iran, where Israel targeted Tehran’s Defense Ministry headquarters as well as locations it alleged were associated with the country’s nuclear program.

The Israeli military alleged the locations were «related to the Iranian regime’s nuclear weapons project.»

U.S. intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency have repeatedly said Iran was not pursuing a nuclear weapon before Israel unleashed its offensive targeting Iran starting on Friday.

El dilema de Israel: la autocracia del gobierno o la bomba atómica iraní

Published

on

Tim Walz lets loose in rant-filled talk with liberal think tank

Published

Former Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has built a reputation for his off-the-cuff comments.

The Democratic Minnesota governor made no exception during a Center for American Progress (CAP) event on Friday morning called, «What’s Next: Conversations on the Path Forward.»

Walz said China might be the voice of «moral authority» following Israel’s strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and military leaders.

«Now, who is the voice in the world that can negotiate some type of agreement in this? Who holds the moral authority? Who holds the ability to do that? Because we are not seen as a neutral actor, and we maybe never were,» Walz said of the U.S.’ role in de-escalating tensions in the Middle East.

According to Walz, the U.S. once attempted «to be somewhat of the arbitrator» in those negotiations during the Iran Nuclear Deal, but he said Americans must face the reality that the «neutral actor» with the «moral authority» to lead negotiations in the Middle East «might be the Chinese.»

Walz didn’t elaborate on why China would be that world leader.

The Minnesota Democrat also admitted he is hoping for rain during President Donald Trump’s military parade.

«I have never so hoped for rain in my life,» Walz said.

Trump is hosting a massive Flag Day military parade on Saturday to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are expected to gather in the nation’s capital to witness the historic parade, which also coincides with the president’s 79th birthday.

«This is not Pyongyang on a Saturday,» Walz said, referring to the capital of North Korea, which is a communist, totalitarian dictatorship. Walz has joined many Democrats, including those planning to protest on Saturday, in criticizing Trump’s military parade by drawing comparisons to China and North Korea’s military parades.

Trump’s military parade on Saturday comes amid escalated conflict in the Middle East, after Israel launched air strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and military leaders, and Iran responded by launching missiles toward Israeli territory.

Walz was ridiculed earlier this year for celebrating Tesla’s stock drop as protests raged on, rejecting Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

«On the iPhone, they’ve got that little stock app. I added Tesla to it to give me a little boost during the day — $225 and dropping,» Walz said at the time.

Walz on Friday said that speaking out against Musk and Tesla «worked» because it started to hurt the billionaire personally.

The Democrat, who rose to the national stage as former Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate during her brief 2024 presidential campaign, criticized Trump along his usual attack lines on Friday.

Walz said Trump is «incompetent at governing,» and America is in a «dangerous time» under Trump’s leadership, which he said is «marching towards authoritarianism» following the chaotic incident in which authorities forcibly removed Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., at a Department of Homeland Security press conference on Thursday.

The former vice presidential candidate also said he was successful in labeling Trump «weird» during the 2024 presidential campaign.

«I thought instead of making him a scary authoritarian wannabe who is incredibly dangerous, which I believe he is, I just thought, what a weird dude doing some of this stuff,» Walz said.

Walz added he «got a bunch of heat» for «inciting violence because I said we should bully the c— out of Donald Trump.»

Earlier this year, the Minnesota governor said Harris chose him as her running mate, in part, because, «I could code talk to White guys watching football, fixing their truck» and «put them at ease,» describing himself as the «permission structure» for White men from rural America to vote for Democrats.

«I think I’ll give you pretty good stuff, but I’ll also give you 10% problematic,» he added.

Walz laughed off criticism over inconsistencies in his background on the 2024 campaign trail, describing himself as a «knucklehead.»
