Los recorridos de antorchas en Guatemala dejan dos adolescentes fallecidos
Lo que debía ser una jornada de celebración y fiesta en Guatemala, terminó en tragedia, luego de que dos adolescentes fallecieran al ser atropellados cuando participaban en el recorrido de una antorcha patria.
El accidente de tránsito se registró la noche del domingo 13 de septiembre, cuando un grupo de jóvenes corría por la carretera como parte de las celebraciones por las fiestas de Independencia.
Un tercer participante, de 19 años, fue trasladado en estado delicado a un hospital.
El incidente se suscitó cuando los jóvenes corrían en grupo como parte de las antorchas patrias y, por causas que se desconocen, fueron atropellados a la altura del kilómetro 145 de la ruta CA-2 Occidente, jurisdicción de San Antonio, Suchitepéquez.

Los Bomberos Municipales Departamentales fueron alertados sobre un percance vial que afectó a personas que participaban en el recorrido de una antorcha.
Al llegar al lugar, los socorristas localizaron a un menor de edad que ya no presentaba signos vitales. La víctima fue identificada como Cristian Salomón Ponce, de 16 años.
Los rescatistas también atendieron a otro adolescente, quien recibió estabilización en el lugar y fue trasladado al Hospital Nacional de Mazatenango. El joven fue identificado como Gerson Otoniel Toloc Santay, de 17 años.
Murió al ingresar al centro asistencial, según la información difundida por los cuerpos de socorro. La tercera víctima fue Kevin Santay Toloc, de 19 años. Rudy Chaclán, portavoz de Bomberos Municipales Departamentales, indicó que el joven permanecía en condición delicada.
Las autoridades investigan si hubo otro vehículo involucrado
En el lugar del accidente fue localizada una motocicleta. Hasta ahora, no se ha determinado si otro vehículo, de transporte pesado o liviano, tuvo participación en el percance.
Tras confirmar la muerte del primer adolescente, los bomberos notificaron a las autoridades correspondientes para que efectuaran las diligencias legales.
La investigación quedó en manos de las entidades competentes, que deberán esclarecer cómo ocurrió el accidente y establecer posibles responsabilidades.
La tragedia ocurrió en medio de los recorridos de antorchas que realizan estudiantes, familias y otros grupos durante las actividades patrias en Guatemala.
El gobernador pidió circular por el lado derecho de la vía
Luego del hecho, el gobernador departamental de Guatemala, Mauricio Roberto Benard Alvarado, pidió a maestros, estudiantes y participantes de las antorchas que se movilicen por el lado derecho de las calles.
El funcionario solicitó que los grupos permitan el paso de los vehículos y pidió a los automovilistas mantener la consideración y el cuidado necesarios al encontrarse con jóvenes que realizan estos recorridos.
“Queremos que esto, por favor, no se repita”, expresó Benard Alvarado al referirse a la tragedia ocurrida en Suchitepéquez.
El gobernador también recomendó que los participantes se hidraten, se protejan del sol y utilicen bloqueador durante las jornadas previstas para las celebraciones de Independencia.
Además, pidió paciencia a las personas que observan el paso de las antorchas y a los conductores que circulan cerca de los grupos. La recomendación para quienes participan es realizar el trayecto por el costado derecho de la carretera.
El Obelisco cerró para impedir concentraciones de antorchas
El tradicional punto de encendido del fuego patrio en el Obelisco permaneció cerrado este lunes 14 de septiembre para evitar la concentración de personas durante los recorridos.
Un video difundido por Amílcar Montejo, gerente de Comunicación de Emetra, mostró el sector sin acceso para los grupos que acostumbran reunirse en ese lugar durante las actividades patrias.
Las autoridades habilitaron cinco puntos alternativos para encender el fuego patrio entre las 6.00 y las 18.00:
- Centro Comercial Los Álamos,
- En la zona 18;
- Parque Erick Barrondo;
- Campos del Roosevelt;
- Campo Marte y
- Municipalidad de Guatemala.
La medida busca distribuir a los participantes en distintos sectores de la capital y reducir las complicaciones de tránsito que suelen producirse en los alrededores del Obelisco durante los recorridos de antorchas.

Periodista nicaragüense desnacionalizado, arresto del ICE en Orlando y un viaje temido: el caso de Luis Galeano tras la cancelación del TPS
Un periodista nicaragüense desnacionalizado, detenido mientras conducía para Uber en Orlando, enfrenta ahora el riesgo de ser deportado al país que lo declaró “traidor a la patria” hace tres años.
El Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) arrestó este lunes a Luis Galeano, director del programa Café con Voz, en lo que sus colegas y opositores describieron como una situación de peligro extremo, según informó la agencia EFE.
La detención ocurrió en circunstancias cotidianas. La esposa de Galeano, Deykell Santamaría, confirmó que su marido conducía para la plataforma Uber cuando los agentes lo interceptaron. Luego, él mismo la llamó desde una estación de policía en Orlando, Florida.
La cancelación del TPS dejó a miles de nicaragüenses sin protección migratoria
El arresto de Galeano se produce en un contexto de creciente vulnerabilidad para los exiliados nicaragüenses en Estados Unidos.
El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS) del gobierno del presidente Donald Trump anuló el Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) para Nicaragua en julio de 2025, con fecha de expiración efectiva el 8 de septiembre de ese año.
Esa cancelación dejó a opositores, activistas y periodistas nicaragüenses expuestos a detenciones del ICE y al riesgo de deportación hacia el país que los persigue.
El caso de Galeano no es aislado: el 17 de agosto pasado, el exparamilitar nicaragüense Marlon Gerardo Sáenz Cruz, de 65 años y también desnacionalizado, fue detenido por ICE en Los Ángeles durante una presentación rutinaria ante las autoridades migratorias, según consignó The Washington Post, diario estadounidense.
Galeano fue desnacionalizado junto a escritores y un obispo en 2023
La historia de Galeano con el régimen de Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo comenzó mucho antes de su detención en Florida. El periodista abandonó Nicaragua en diciembre de 2018 tras una orden de captura emitida por un juez de Managua, en plena crisis política desatada en abril de ese año.
El 15 de febrero de 2023, las autoridades nicaragüenses lo declararon formalmente “traidor a la patria”, le revocaron la nacionalidad y le confiscaron sus bienes.
La lista incluyó a otras 93 personas: los escritores Sergio Ramírez y Gioconda Belli, el obispo auxiliar de Managua Silvio Báez, la defensora de derechos humanos Vilma Núñez, el periodista Carlos Fernando Chamorro y el excomandante Luis Carrión, entre otros.
Desde Miami, Galeano conducía Café con Voz junto a su esposa. Antes del exilio, trabajó en el desaparecido periódico El Nuevo Diario y fue redactor de la delegación de Nicaragua de EFE entre 2004 y 2006.
Su programa se emitía en el canal 100% Noticias, que la Policía Nacional allanó y cuyas oficinas fueron decomisadas. El ente regulador estatal ordenó además a los operadores de televisión por suscripción que lo retiraran de su programación.
La oposición advierte que una deportación pondría su vida en riesgo
La detención generó una cadena inmediata de pronunciamientos. Juan Sebastián Chamorro, dirigente opositor nicaragüense, envió un audio a los medios en el que advirtió que “su vida correría extremo riesgo de ser deportado hacia Nicaragua”.
“Luis es un perseguido político y merece ser atendido en los Estados Unidos como un asilado político”, sostuvo Chamorro ante EFE, y convocó a las autoridades estadounidenses a considerar “la lucha por la libertad de expresión de Luis Galeano, de su programa, por el bien de Nicaragua y también de su familia”.
La Gran Confederación Opositora Nicaragüense publicó en sus redes sociales un llamado directo al ICE para que evaluara la situación del comunicador. “Es un perseguido político por la dictadura sandinista de Murillo-Ortega en Nicaragua”, escribió la organización.

El arresto de Galeano refleja una tendencia que se agrava. Nicaragua atraviesa una crisis política y social desde abril de 2018, que se profundizó tras las elecciones de noviembre de 2021, en las que Ortega obtuvo su quinto mandato —el cuarto consecutivo— con sus principales rivales en prisión.
Luego los expulsó del país, los privó de la nacionalidad y los acusó de “golpistas” y “traición a la patria”.
La Asociación Memoria y Justicia (AMJ) documentó que 135 personas fueron despojadas de la ciudadanía nicaragüense en septiembre de 2024 y trasladadas a Guatemala, donde muchas aún enfrentan obstáculos para regularizar su situación migratoria, según publicó Infobae el 10 de septiembre de 2026.
Para Galeano, el dilema es ahora el mismo que para decenas de compatriotas: un país de origen que lo persigue y un país de acogida que no garantiza su permanencia.

Longtime Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, announced on Monday that he intends to force a vote on impeaching President Donald Trump, citing federal immigration officers’ killing of two U.S. citizens earlier this year.
Green, who has publicly protested Trump on multiple occasions, introduced what’s called a privileged resolution on the House floor aimed at booting the president out of office. A privileged resolution is a mechanism that allows any lawmaker to force the entire chamber to consider a bill within two legislative days.
That means House GOP leaders will have to hold a vote on the measure by the end of the day on Wednesday.

The vote is all but guaranteed to be a political headache for Democrats who are fighting to take back the House and Senate in the November midterm elections.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., has long demurred on the subject of impeachment, maintaining that Democrats are focused on tackling issues like high living costs that are critical to everyday Americans.

He and 127 other House Democrats voted with Republicans to quash a previous Trump impeachment effort by Green in June 2025.

Green was also notably thrown out of both of Trump’s addresses to a joint session of Congress during this term.
During his first address since returning to the White House, Green repeatedly waved his cane at Trump and shouted while the president spoke. At the beginning of Trump’s State of the Union address earlier this year, Green held up a sign that said, «Black People Aren’t Apes.»
Democratic leaders have signaled they are preparing for a flurry of investigations into the Trump administration and the president’s circle if they win the midterms in November.

Green insisted that Democrats did not need to wait for those probes, however, demanding in a letter to House colleagues that a vote on impeaching Trump is held immediately.
«To those who say, ‘Wait until next year’ and ‘Buckle up’ when the investigations start, I say: How many more lives must we lose, and how many more loved ones of victims have to plead for help before the self-evident evidence from videos and President Trump’s own words compel us to act?» Green wrote. «The available overwhelming evidence sufficiently demonstrates that President Trump is unfit and dangerous to our democracy.»
The latest impeachment resolution calls Trump «a great threat to democracy and the Constitution for current high crimes and misdemeanors.»
It cited federal immigration officers’ killing of two American citizens amid a nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration in U.S. cities.

Iran’s proxy money machine: How the Houthis built a multibillion-dollar network despite US sanctions

The Houthis’ rapid advance toward one of the world’s most important shipping chokepoints is putting fresh scrutiny on the sprawling financial network that has helped transform the Iran-backed group from a Yemeni insurgency into a heavily armed regional power capable of threatening global trade.
The group has seized new territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, including the strategic port city of Mocha, and expanded toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The waterway connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and carries a significant share of global maritime trade and energy shipments.
For the Trump administration, the Houthi advance is becoming as much a financial challenge as a military one. Washington is intensifying efforts to choke off the money sustaining Iran and its proxies, but the Houthis have built a sprawling sanctions-evasion network while controlling ports, trade routes and millions of Yemenis — raising a difficult question for Treasury: how do you cut off the cash fueling the group without cutting off food, fuel and other lifelines to civilians?

The Houthis operate a financial network that extends far beyond Yemen, according to Adam Rousselle, founder of Between the Lines Research.
«We’re dealing with a very well-capitalized group,» Rousselle told Fox News Digital.
In a 2025 investigation for the Global Network on Extremism and Technology, Rousselle traced a financing system spanning Houthi-controlled ports, tariffs, Iranian oil, informal hawala networks, cryptocurrency exchanges and foreign facilitators across Russia, Turkey and Southeast Asia.
Control of ports has historically been central to Houthi revenue because Yemen depends heavily on imports. Rousselle’s GNET report said the Houthis have imposed steep fees at ports they control and tariffs on goods brought into their territory from rival Yemeni ports.

The group’s latest territorial gains could strengthen that economic base even further.
Nadwa Al-Dawsari, a Yemen expert and associate fellow at the Middle East Institute, told lawmakers in Sept. 1 testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee that territory is central to the Houthis’ ability to withstand outside pressure.
«The most important source of that leverage is territory,» Al-Dawsari testified. «The Houthis have been able to consolidate their power and build increasingly sophisticated military capabilities because they control significant territory, a large population, ports, infrastructure, and resources.»
«That territorial base allows them to recruit, generate revenue, manufacture and store weapons, control smuggling routes, and regenerate capabilities degraded by airstrikes and sanctions,» she added.

Rousselle said the Houthis’ finances should not be understood simply as Tehran handing cash to an Iranian proxy.
«It’s a bit of a misunderstanding that the Iranians just give them money,» he said, describing the Houthis instead as embedded in a broader Iranian commercial ecosystem.
«The Houthis aren’t sanctions-proof; they’re sanctions-adapted,» Miad Maleki, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital. «Most of their money is made inside Yemen — customs and taxes at Hodeidah and Ras Isa, and fuel above all.»
Treasury has estimated that the Houthis generate more than $2 billion a year from oil sales, while Iran provides the group with a free monthly oil shipment through Iranian-owned or affiliated companies based in Dubai. Treasury has also documented Houthi revenue from taxes imposed on petroleum imports.

«Sanctions can’t reach domestic extraction,» Maleki said. «What they can reach is the plumbing between Sana’a and the outside world; the exchange houses, the Dubai and Muscat correspondents, the tankers and the wallets.»
At the center of that system is Sa’id al-Jamal, whom the Treasury Department has identified as an Iran-backed Houthi financial official operating an international network that sells Iranian commodities and channels proceeds toward the group.
Treasury said in April 2025 that al-Jamal’s network had procured tens of millions of dollars in weapons, sensitive goods and commodities from Russia and identified eight digital-asset wallets used by the Houthis. Blockchain analytics cited in Rousselle’s GNET research identified nearly $900 million in outflows across those addresses.
Rousselle cautioned against treating that figure as a complete picture of Houthi wealth.
«The system is more important than the number itself,» he said, describing the network as fluid and difficult to quantify.
Russia, he argued, has become a particularly significant part of the network. «The Russians are definitely more hands-on in their support,» Rousselle said.

Al-Dawsari’s congressional testimony similarly highlighted the Houthis’ expanding relationships beyond Iran, saying the group is «deepening ties with other U.S. adversaries, particularly Russia and China.»
She cited reports that Russia provided targeting data used to help the Houthis attack Western ships in the Red Sea and that Russian petroleum products were transferred ship-to-ship into a Houthi-controlled tanker before reaching the Houthi-controlled port of Ras Isa.
The China connection is more complicated. Rousselle said Chinese-linked private commercial actors appear in parts of the network but distinguished that activity from proven direct Chinese government involvement.
«The Chinese are kind of… turning a blind eye,» he said.
His GNET report described Iranian oil flowing to privately owned Chinese «teapot» refineries and examined transactions linked to Southeast Asian financial networks, while cautioning that the available evidence did not establish direct Chinese government control of Houthi financing.
Al-Dawsari pointed to a broader Chinese role in Houthi supply chains. Citing U.S. officials, she said a Chinese satellite company with ties to the Chinese military provided satellite imagery supporting Houthi attacks against U.S. warships and international shipping. She also cited interdiction data showing that 60% of the components and materials used in the Houthi Qasef-2K drone came from China, compared with roughly 15% from Iran.
That sprawling network is now testing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s broader effort to isolate Tehran economically and disrupt the financial channels sustaining Iran and its proxies.
Rousselle said decentralized illicit-finance networks present a fundamental challenge.
«You’re dealing with a ‘you shut down one, another pops up’ kind of situation,» he said.
Maleki argued that Washington should concentrate on the points where Houthi money intersects with the formal financial system.

«The soft spots are wherever Houthi money touches the formal system,» he said. «Treasury has named the Yemeni banks and the Sana’a exchange houses that pay for missile components; it should now name the foreign correspondents still clearing for them. That is the one tool that changes behavior overnight.»
Oman represents another potential pressure point. «Oman is the Houthis’ land bridge and their mailing address,» Maleki said.
But squeezing Houthi finances presents another dilemma: Yemen remains one of the world’s most fragile humanitarian environments, and the Houthis control ports and infrastructure through which civilians receive food, fuel and other basic goods.
«I would be lying if I had a concrete answer to it,» Rousselle said when asked how Washington could disrupt Houthi revenue without worsening the humanitarian crisis.

«The humanitarian argument is the Houthis’ best shield, and it’s backwards,» Maleki said. «Food and medicine are licensed and should stay that way.»
«Keep the goods flowing and take away the toll,» he added, arguing that Washington should seek ways to prevent humanitarian trade from generating taxes and fees for Houthi authorities.
Rousselle warned that the challenge extends far beyond Yemen.

«This isn’t just about the Houthis,» he said. «This is about any sanctioned actor worldwide capable of harnessing financial systems that are completely outside of regulatory control.»
The Treasury Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
