Bishop’s village attacked, 20 slain after recent testimony to Congress on Christian persecution

FIRST ON FOX: A Nigerian bishop has been threatened and his home village murderously attacked after he appealed to lawmakers at a March congressional hearing for the killing of Christians to stop.
Bishop Wilfred Anagbe told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview this week that after he went to Washington to testify, four fatal attacks in 10 days by «terrorist Jihadists» had happened in his diocese, the area he is responsible for.
Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian, according to NGO Open Doors International’s 2025 World Watch List (WWL). Of the 4,476 Christians killed worldwide in WWL’s latest reporting period, 3,100 of those who died – 69% – were in Nigeria.

Open Doors U.K., added in a statement, «Jihadist violence continues to escalate in Nigeria, and Christians are at particular risk from targeted attacks by Islamic militant groups, including Fulani militants, Boko Haram and ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).»
One leader of one of the biggest churches in Africa’s most populous nation, using the pseudonym «Pastor Winyadebi» because he’s worried about his safety, told Fox News Digital. «It has been attacks upon attacks, religious violence. And we say this because the communities that are attacked are Christian communities.»
«What they (Islamist militants) want is to be sure that Islam [takes] over every part of these places. … And so they’re doing everything to make sure that Christianity is brought down and Islam is [the] established No. 1. They want to make sure that Sharia law (strict Islamic law) has taken over Nigeria,» he said.

Anagbe’s Makurdi Diocese in north-central Nigeria is almost exclusively Christian. But the constant and escalating attacks by Islamist Fulani militants led him to testify at a congressional hearing in March.
In April, several foreign embassies in Abuja, Nigeria, warned the bishop of credible high-level official threats: that he would be detained upon arrival in Nigeria from the U.S. and that «something might happen to him.»
This led to Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., Anagbe’s congressional host and chair of the House Africa Subcommittee, to write in a statement: «I am appalled by reports that Bishop Wilfred Anagbe and Father Remigius Ihyula (who testified alongside Bishop Anagbe) are facing threats—allegedly from Nigerian government sources and affiliated organizations—because of the Bishop’s testimony before Congress detailing violence in Nigeria’s Benue State. They reflect a troubling pattern of retaliation linked to testimony before Congress on religious freedom abuses in Nigeria.»
CHRISTIANS INCREASINGLY PERSECUTED WORLDWIDE AS ‘MODERN AND HISTORICAL FACTORS CONVERGE’
The U.S. Mission in Nigeria on April 10 posted on X calling for the bishop’s «right to speak freely without fear of retribution or retaliation,» declaring that intimidation and threats had been made «because of their March 12 testimony.»

Then the attacks, larger and more frequent than before, started, with four attacks between May 23 and June 1.
Anagbe told Fox News Digital that «what has been happening in my village and diocese is nothing short of terror attacks on innocent villagers in order to seize their lands and occupy.»
«On the 23rd [of] May, one of my priests, Father Solomon Atongo, was shot in the leg by these terrorists and almost lost his life. On the 25th of May, my village, Aondona, was attacked for hours, leaving over 20 people dead, scores injured and thousands now displaced and living in makeshift camps,» he said.
«On the 1st of June, terror was unleashed on Naka town, with many killed and displaced,» Anagbe continued. «This attack was so intense that even those earlier displaced and taking refuge in a nearby school were not spared. All over Nigeria, these terrorists are going about on a jihad and conquering territories and renaming them accordingly.»
«I have been speaking about this genocide for some years now, but whereas in the past some others saw my advocacy with the political lens, today almost everyone in Nigeria has seen the truth for what it is, especially after my testimony in the U.S. Congress.»

The bishop ended the interview with a plea: «The world has a lot to do. First of all, the world must learn from past mistakes, the Holocaust and most recently the Rwandan genocide. In both cases, the world hid its face in the sand like an ostrich. If the world does not rise up now to put a stop to the atrocities orchestrated in the name of being politically correct, it may wake up one day to casualties that make the Rwandan genocide a child’s play. Keeping quiet would be to promote the genocide or ethnic cleansing in Nigeria.»
While the Nigerian government did not respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment, the Catholic Herald reported that the Nigerian Foreign Ministry had contacted the U.S. regarding the bishop’s testimony, noting that «any reports of threats or intimidation against religious leaders would be investigated and appropriate actions would be taken.»

Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, who is now seeking the Republican nomination in the Granite State, took a shot at Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani and his former opponent, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, for their joint press conference earlier this week, where she said that Mamdani is «the guy who’s walking the walk right now.»
«Let’s be crystal clear. So, New York is our financial capital of the world. It’s a great city. I used to live there,» Bown said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
«You look who’s supporting them, AOC, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, it’s the party of the extreme left who want open border sanctuary cities,» he added.

«I’ve tied Chris Pappas in because when asked directly whether he supports him or not, he wouldn’t answer the question. And it’s clear by his votes that he basically agrees with AOC and Bernie Sanders on all the things we talked about, and that’s so far out of touch with the people of New Hampshire,» he said of his likely Democratic opponent, Rep. Chris Pappas.
Brown ran a digital ad in June dubbed «Comrade Chris» depicting Pappas alongside Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani.
«Scott Brown is pathetic in terms of how he’s running this campaign,» Pappas said. «Folks here in New Hampshire know that I’m a New Hampshire Democrat. I’m someone who works across the aisle,» Pappas told WMUR when asked if he wants to see Mamdani win and about being tied to the far left mayoral candidate. «The fact is, I don’t know what’s gonna go on in New York City. What I’m focused on is what’s happening right here in New Hampshire.»

«Republicans have spent tens of millions of dollars running attack ads against me through the years trying to paint me as someone that I’m not,» the Democrat said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.
«We have the first in the nation primary, and if this guy wins [the mayor’s race], then he will be up here campaigning for all these other Democrats, and they will be pushed in so extreme, so far to the left, that the people in New Hampshire will see right through it,» he said of Mamdani. «They do not want his brand of socialism and extremism, antisemitism, bigotry pushed to New Hampshire,» Brown added.
«But the difference between [Warren] and Chris Pappas is that she believes what she believes, and she’ll let you know. When you ask Chris Pappas a question about him or other policies, where do you stand on blank […] he’s [gives] this big convoluted answer,» Brown said.

In 2010, Brown became the first Republican senator Massachusetts had in decades. He told Fox News Digital this week that «the energy feels like 2010,» harkening back to when he won the special election at the time. The win was considered a major early success of the Tea Party movement. He later lost to Warren in the 2012 election.

El Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU aplazó para el domingo la reunión de urgencia sobre el plan de Israel para Gaza
El Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas aplazó para este domingo la reunión de emergencia prevista para tratar el reciente anuncio del Gobierno liderado por el primer ministro israelí, Benjamin Netanyahu, para tomar la ciudad de Gaza.
La reunión, que estaba prevista que se llevase a cabo este sábado a las 15:00 (hora local de Washington), arrancará previsiblemente el domingo a las 10:00, según consta en la agenda del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU.
El secretario general de la ONU, António Guterres, afirmó que el plan israelí para ocupar la ciudad de Gaza “marca una peligrosa escalada” que pondrá “aún más en peligro” a los civiles en Gaza, incluyendo los secuestrados que permanecen en el enclave desde los ataques de las milicias palestinas el 7 de octubre de 2023.
El Gobierno de Israel aprobó en la madrugada del viernes la propuesta de Netanyahu para ampliar las operaciones en Gaza, incluyendo la toma de la homónima capital del enclave palestino en base a premisas como “la desmilitarización” y el control de su seguridad, así como “el regreso de todos los rehenes, tanto vivos como fallecidos”.
La convocatoria de la sesión extraordinaria del Consejo de Seguridad fue solicitada por diversos miembros de este organismo ante la “preocupación creciente”, según transmitió un integrante del cuerpo diplomático a la agencia de noticias AFP.
“Varios países en nuestro nombre y en el suyo propio están solicitando una reunión”, declaró el representante palestino ante la ONU, Ryad Mansour, ante la prensa sobre esta cumbre para abordar la nueva iniciativa israelí, que según filtraciones incluiría la evacuación de la población gazatí antes del 7 de octubre y la imposición de un gobierno provisional no vinculado al grupo terrorista Hamas ni a la Autoridad Nacional Palestina (ANP).
Distintos gobiernos y organismos internacionales han manifestado su rechazo a la decisión de Israel.
El canciller alemán, Friedrich Merz, afirmó que el plan israelí “no aclara cómo se pretende alcanzar los objetivos de desarmar a Hamas, lograr la liberación de los rehenes y emprender rápidamente negociaciones para un alto el fuego”. En este sentido, anunció la suspensión hasta nuevo aviso de exportaciones de material militar a Israel que pueda ser utilizado en la Franja, una decisión inédita para Alemania desde el inicio del conflicto.
En una decisión similar, Países Bajos calificó el plan militar de “un paso equivocado” y canceló entregas navales a Israel por considerar que existe “riesgo de uso” contra Gaza. El gobierno neerlandés remarcó que la ciudad “pertenece a los palestinos” y advirtió que la operación “no contribuye en absoluto” a la mejora humanitaria del enclave.
Las reacciones diplomáticas también se extendieron a Bélgica, cuyo ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, Maxime Prévot, convocó a la embajadora de Israel, Idit Rosenzweig-Abu, para expresar la oposición del gobierno belga y abogar para que se dé marcha atrás en los planes anunciados.
España, a través de su ministro de Asuntos Exteriores, José Manuel Albares, condenó de manera firme la decisión israelí e instó a la instauración de un alto el fuego permanente, la entrada masiva de ayuda humanitaria y la liberación de los rehenes.
Por su parte, el primer ministro británico, Keir Starmer, calificó de “errónea” la decisión de Israel y advirtió que la expansión militar solo acarrearía “más derramamiento de sangre”, argumentando que no contribuirá a la solución del conflicto ni a la liberación de los capturados. Starmer recordó que el Reino Unido prevé reconocer el Estado palestino en la ONU si no hay avances en el alto el fuego.
El desarrollo de la reunión del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU será clave para determinar la respuesta internacional ante los últimos acontecimientos en Gaza y definir posibles acciones diplomáticas orientadas a contener la escalada en la región.

Italia realizó el primer lanzamiento de ayuda humanitaria en Gaza y el Reino Unido anunció que destinará más fondos
El Ministerio de Defensa italiano informó sobre el vuelo inaugural del primer avión del país destinado a lanzar ayuda humanitaria a la población de Gaza, con una frecuencia de uno por día durante una semana.
La institución difundió imágenes de un avión de transporte C-130J de la Fuerza Aérea Italiana en pista, preparándose para despegar bajo la misión “Solidarity Path Operation 2» («Operación Sendero Solidario 2″), un puente humanitario destinado a apoyar a la población civil en la Franja de Gaza.
Italia enviará alrededor de 100 toneladas de bienes, incluidos alimentos y artículos básicos, que serán transportados a Amán en un vuelo civil. Estos suministros, almacenados en palés, se cargarán posteriormente en aviones para su lanzamiento aéreo.
La operación prevé un lanzamiento diario durante siete días, implicando a tripulaciones de la Fuerza Aérea y personal del Ejército especializado en logística de carga.
Previo a esta misión, el Ministerio de Defensa había apoyado a Gaza mediante el buque hospital “Vulcano“, vuelos médicos para niños heridos y la entrega de medicamentos a través de helicópteros del Ejército.
En la plataforma X, el Ministerio compartió junto al video la siguiente cita textual: “Despega el primer vuelo para el lanzamiento en paracaídas de ayuda humanitaria en la Franja de Gaza. La Defensa siempre está ahí, donde y cuando se la necesita”.
Además, el Ministerio italiano de Asuntos Exteriores confirmó recientemente un nuevo envío de ayuda humanitaria a Gaza. Este envío incluye más de 350 toneladas de harina para la población civil palestina, cuya entrada a la Franja se realizará por camión desde Jordania.
Por su parte, el Reino Unido asignará 8,5 millones de libras adicionales (9,8 millones de euros) para apoyar la labor humanitaria de las Naciones Unidas en Gaza, según informó el Ministerio británico de Asuntos Exteriores en un comunicado.
Estos fondos se canalizarán mediante el fondo para los Territorios Palestinos Ocupados (TPO) de la agencia de la ONU para asuntos humanitarios (OCHA) y se destinarán a proveer alimentos, agua y combustible en las áreas más necesitadas de la Franja de Gaza, de acuerdo con el Foreign Office.
La suma anunciada se incluye en el presupuesto de 101 millones de libras (116,6 millones de euros) de ayuda oficial al desarrollo que el Reino Unido comprometió este año fiscal para los TPO.
Según el ministerio, el Reino Unido es el principal donante de este fondo humanitario de la ONU y el nuevo paquete podría beneficiar a miles de civiles “si Israel permite que la ONU y otras agencias operen en la escala necesaria”.
El respaldo británico, a través de OCHA, ya ha posibilitado la distribución de alimentos y atención médica y económica para más de 750.000 palestinos desde el inicio del conflicto en octubre de 2023, según el Foreign Office.
El anuncio se produce tras la aprobación por parte del gabinete de seguridad israelí, liderado por Benjamín Netanyahu, de un plan para una nueva ofensiva militar en la Franja de Gaza, con el objetivo de ocupar la ciudad de Gaza. El primer ministro británico, Keir Starmer, calificó esta decisión como «errónea“.
“La catástrofe humanitaria en Gaza continúa e instamos a Israel a revertir su decisión de ampliar las operaciones militares. Todas las partes deben restablecer el alto el fuego para poner fin al terrible sufrimiento y asegurar la liberación de todos los rehenes», declaró Jenny Chapman, secretaria de Estado británica para el Desarrollo Internacional.
Chapman también describió como «inaceptable» que la ayuda permanezca en la frontera y reclamó a Israel permitir el acceso seguro de más suministros. Además, aseguró que el Reino Unido está preparado para enviar más víveres con la colaboración de sus socios.
“La insuficiencia de suministros que llegan está provocando escenas atroces y caóticas mientras civiles desesperados intentan acceder a cantidades mínimas de ayuda”, afirmó Chapman.
