California gubernatorial hopeful Eric Swalwell embraces role as Trump’s loudest critic amid new DOJ probe

As he launches a bid to become the next governor of California, Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., has embraced his most recent conflict with the Trump administration, touting himself as the president’s «most vocal critic.»
Throughout his congressional career, highly visible clashes with President Donald Trump have given Swalwell a national profile. He looks poised to continue that streak, repeatedly highlighting his tensions with the president as the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a new investigation against him this month.
«Nancy Pelosi selected me to lead the impeachment of a corrupt president. Californians will never bow the knee,» Swalwell said in a video posted on his website.
California’s current governor, Gavin Newsom, is term-limited in 2026.

The DOJ opened a probe into Swalwell over alleged mortgage fraud and, according to reporting by NBC, he may also be under investigation for tax fraud and insurance fraud. Swalwell denies any wrongdoing.
«The only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me,» Swalwell said in a statement following news of the investigation.
Swalwell first entered Congress in 2013 after serving as a county deputy district attorney in California from 2006 to 2012. He briefly ran for president in 2020 but dropped out just three months after launching his bid.
In media interviews since the DOJ announced its probe, Swalwell has embraced his role as a target of the administration.
«This is really about Donald Trump going after his political enemies. No one has been a more vocal critic than me. I have one of the only remaining lawsuits against Donald Trump for his role in Jan. 6,» Swalwell said in an interview with MSNBC, referring to pending litigation over whether Trump encouraged protesters to storm the U.S. Capitol building in 2021.
«I’m not going to change a single thing about what I do to stand up against Donald Trump when he gets in the way of me fighting for Californians,» Swalwell said. «I am not going to shrink one bit because of Donald Trump trying to intimidate me, and it’s not working with the other colleagues he’s gone after.»

In a post to X, Swalwell listed himself alongside other Democrats facing similar charges from the DOJ.
«Like James Comey and John Bolton, Adam Schiff and Lisa Cook, Letitia James and the dozens more to come — I refuse to live in fear in what was once the freest country in the world,» Swalwell said.
His opposition to Trump stands out even as his record in the 119th Congress doesn’t jump off the page.
Notably, Swalwell has missed 16% of his votes since the beginning of the year, making him the 10th-most-absent member of the House of Representatives. He rarely breaks with the party, having voted against a majority of Democrats on just eight occasions since the outset of the session. He also hasn’t made much noise in fundraising this year, reporting a respectable yet unexceptional $1.4 million in the first three quarters of 2025.

But Swalwell’s yearslong record against Trump stands out.
As referenced in his video, Swalwell was a House impeachment manager against Trump in 2021 and, in addition to his lawsuit, has used his position on the House Oversight Committee to criticize the president’s policies and behavior.
«Next week, when we hear about someone else who is an opponent of Donald Trump being investigated, it will also be nonsense,» Swalwell said in an interview with CNN. «Of course, I am one of the most vocal critics against Donald Trump. I have the only lawsuit that survived him becoming president — me and the other Jan. 6 officers.»

The investigation into Swalwell is in its early stages. The DOJ has not announced if or when it would pursue a grand jury trial. Swalwell’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump claims White House doctors report him in ‘perfect health,’ says he ‘aced’ third straight cognitive exam

President Donald Trump kicked off 2026 by claiming that White House doctors gave him another clean bill of health.
«The White House Doctors have just reported that I am in ‘PERFECT HEALTH,’ and that I ‘ACED’ (meaning, was correct on 100% of the questions asked!), for the third straight time, my Cognitive Examination, something which no other President, or previous Vice President, was willing to take,» Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Friday.
«P.S., I strongly believe that anyone running for President, or Vice President, should be mandatorily forced to take a strong, meaningful, and proven Cognitive Examination,» he added. «Our great Country cannot be run by ‘STUPID’ or INCOMPETENT PEOPLE!»

Trump, who will turn 80 on June 14, 2026, has faced growing scrutiny over his health, something that was the focus of his recent interview with The Wall Street Journal. He told the newspaper that he regretted undergoing advanced imaging in October, saying it gave way to increased questions about his health.
«In retrospect, it’s too bad I took it because it gave them a little ammunition,» Trump told the Journal. «I would have been a lot better off if they didn’t, because the fact that I took it said, ‘Oh gee, is something wrong?’ Well, nothing’s wrong.»
In October, Trump had a cardiovascular and abdominal scan, something that Navy Capt. Sean P. Barbabella, the physician to the president, noted in a memorandum to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
In his report, Barbabella stated that the evaluation, which he described as being part of the president’s «ongoing health maintenance plan,» included advanced imaging, lab tests and preventative health assessments. Barbabella stated that «Trump continues to demonstrate excellent overall health» and noted that the president «continues to maintain a demanding daily schedule without restriction.»
Leavitt read Barbabella’s report during a press briefing on Dec. 1. The summary that Leavitt read clarified that, «Advanced imaging was performed because men in his age group benefit from a thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health.» The summary noted that the imaging was done as a preventative measure «to identify any issues early, confirm overall health and ensure the president maintains long term vitality and function.»
The summary noted that Trump’s cardiovascular and abdominal imaging were «perfectly normal.» Additionally, it said that «all major organs appear very healthy.»

While Trump maintained that scrutiny and speculation about his health were unwarranted, the Journal reported that those close to the president said they had to speak loudly in meetings because he struggles to hear. The outlet also noted that the president has been criticized for seeming to fall asleep during recent White House events, something Trump denies.
Trump told the Journal that he didn’t fall asleep at recent events, saying that he likes to close his eyes because he finds it «very relaxing.» He also blamed some of the incidents on photo timing, saying that, «Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, blinking, and they’ll catch me with the blink.»
The president also denied that he struggles with his hearing. The Journal reported that «Trump grew sarcastic» when asked about it, saying «I can’t hear you. I can’t hear you. I can’t hear a word you’re saying.» He then said that he sometimes has trouble hearing «when there’s a lot of people talking.»

Health was a central issue of the 2024 presidential race, particularly before then-President Joe Biden dropped out. Trump has often accused Biden of concealing the true extent of his health issues with the public.
Speculation about Biden’s struggles were fueled by his lack of interactions with the press and reluctance to take part in unscripted exchanges. The 46th president’s apparent cognitive issues became increasingly clear when he struggled during a debate with Trump in June 2024. During the debate, Biden appeared to lose his train of thought and stumbled over words.
The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

El bar Le Constellation se prendió fuego en plena celebración de Año Nuevo y dejó un saldo de al menos 40 muertos y más de 100 heridos, muchos de ellos críticos, en lo que es una de las peores tragedias que conoció Suiza.
Entre los primeros en llegar al lugar estuvo Gianni, un joven de 19 años que estudia ingeniería mecánica en Ginebra. Su testimonio es desgarrador: “No voy a poder ver nunca nada peor que esa noche”, aseguró al medio 20 Minutes.

“La escena era insoportable”: el momento en que todo cambió
Pasada la 1:40 de la madrugada, Gianni se enteró de que algo grave había ocurrido. Una amiga suya, que iba a ir al bar, llegó minutos después del desastre y le contó que escuchó explosiones y vio llamas. Sin dudarlo, él se acercó al lugar.

Cuando llegó, no había ni bomberos ni ambulancias. “Los servicios de emergencia llegaron rápido, pero venían de lejos. Las ambulancias tardaron muchísimo”, relató. Mientras tanto, la situación era desesperante: “Había gente tirada en el piso, sin remera, desfigurada, quemada. Todos podían ver eso”.
El horror y la desesperación en primera persona
Cuando los bomberos lograron asegurar el perímetro, Gianni decidió actuar. Con algo de experiencia en defensa civil, se ofreció a ayudar. “No eran suficientes. Nunca vi tanta gente tan mal”, recordó.

Primero asistió a quienes todavía podían moverse, pero la situación se volvió cada vez más extrema. “Había grandes quemados. Ya no tenían cara, ni pelo. Junto a otros voluntarios, improvisaron camillas con estructuras metálicas de los sillones para evacuar a los heridos. “La cantidad de grandes quemados era enorme”, sostuvo.
La falta de recursos y de manos obligó a tomar decisiones imposibles. “A veces teníamos que dejar a las víctimas en el piso y ‘abandonarlas’ para ir a buscar a otras que seguían adentro”, contó.
El caos era total: “Vi personas casi desmembradas, que ya no respondían. Masajes cardíacos. Vi morir a mucha gente delante de mis ojos”.
Una madrugada interminable bajo el frío extremo
Las tareas de rescate se extendieron hasta el amanecer, con temperaturas de –11 grados. “Tuve que salir corriendo a buscar mantas a los bares de al lado”, recordó Gianni. Así era por dentro el bar Le Constellation. (Foto: crans-montana.ch).
Según dijo, muchas de las víctimas estaban tan quemadas que “ya no se podía distinguir a un niño de un adulto, a una mujer de un hombre. Era imposible identificarlos”.
A pesar del horror, el joven siente que logró salvar vidas: “Estoy seguro de que ayudé a personas. Muy pocos civiles se acercaron a ayudar: tres o cuatro nada más”. Incluso los profesionales estaban desbordados: “Los bomberos lloraban. Era peor que una película de terror”.

Hoy, Gianni todavía no logra procesar lo que vivió. “La adrenalina me mantuvo toda la noche. Todavía no me doy cuenta”, confesó.
Sin embargo, lamentó la falta de contención tras el incendio: “Nadie me ofreció ayuda, ni asistencia médica, aunque estuve expuesto al humo. Solo un policía me habló, para pedirme que me fuera”.

“Había unas mozas con botellas de champán con pequeñas bengalas. Se acercaron demasiado al techo y, de repente, se incendió“, contó Axel, presente en el momento de la tragedia, al medio italiano Local Team.

Las llamas se propagaron “a una velocidad vertiginosa”, dijo una testigo al canal francés BFMTV, lo que generó que un gran número de personas que estaban en el lugar terminaran gravemente heridas, e incluso muertas.
“Había una sola puerta para 100 personas.Todos se empujaban como locos. Me encontré debajo de tres o cuatro personas que ardían. Había gente muerta alrededor mío”, comentó otra joven.

El consejero de Estado suizo Stéphane Ganzer declaró este viernes que “entre 80 y 100 personas se encuentran en estado crítico”. Dada la gravedad de las lesiones, muchas personas aún no fueron identificadas.
La fiscal general del cantón, Béatrice Pilloud, indicó que se movilizaron importantes recursos “para identificar a las víctimas y devolver sus cuerpos a las familias”, aunque “puede llevar varios días”.
