Indiana Lt Gov slams Democrats’ ‘DEI, radical revisionist history’ on Three-Fifths Compromise
Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith criticized state Senate Democrats for equating a GOP legislative proposal intended to root out diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in higher education to the Three-Fifths Compromise.
«They were saying this is a bad bill because it actually encourages discrimination, just like the Three-Fifths Compromise going all the way back to the foundations of our nation. I would like to share with you the Three-Fifths Compromise is not a pro-discrimination compromise,» Beckwith, a Republican, said in a video shared on X after an emotional floor debate. «It was not a pro-discrimination or a slave-driving compromise that the founders made. It was actually just the opposite.»
«Don’t buy into the DEI radical revisionist history that is happening in today’s culture,» he said. «Know your history. Go back and study the documents. Read them for yourself like I have. Go look them up and you will find that the Three-Fifths Compromise and many other things like that were designed to make sure that justice was equal for all people and equality really meant equality for all.»

The legislation in question, Senate Bill 289, ultimately passed both chambers of the state legislature last week and heads to Republican Gov. Mike Braun’s desk. The bill restricts DEI programs at K–12 schools, charter schools, state agencies, and public universities and allows people to sue such institutions if they compel students, teachers or administrators to adopt that one race, sex, ethnicity, religion, or national origin «is inherently superior or inferior» to another, that a person’s moral character is determined by one of those characteristics, or that a person should be blamed for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race, sex, ethnicity, religion, or national origin.
The GOP-sponsored bill – titled «unlawful discrimination» – also includes transparency requirements for institutions to post any DEI-related trainings online and repeals provisions concerning university diversity committees, among other reforms. It follows an executive action Braun, a former U.S. senator, issued when he took office as governor in January prioritizing merit over DEI in education and state government.
Critics of the bill in the state Senate last week said the proposal leaves out of consideration a legacy of discrimination in the U.S., citing the Three-Fifths Compromise, Jim Crow laws and real estate redlining.
As for the Three-Fifths Compromise, Beckwith said it was «a compromise that the North made with the South. At the time, there were basically 13 independent nations.»
«They had not really created a Constitution. They were sort of a European Union-esque nation, and they were saying to the pro-slave states, ‘Hey, if you want to count your slaves to have representation, more representation in Congress, we’re not going to let you do that,’ because they knew that that would codify things like slavery into our nation and the North stood up to the South,» Beckwith said.

Made during the 1787 Constitutional Convention, the Three-Fifths Compromise set forth that slaves would be counted as three-fifths of a person when counting a state’s population for taxation and congressional representation. While it reduced the influence that slave-holding states initially wanted, it ultimately allowed them more seats in the House of Representatives and more sway in presidential contests in terms of the Electoral College than if free people were only counted.
The Three-Fifths Compromise ended after the Civil War with the adoption of the 13th and 14th Amendments, abolishing slavery and establishing equal protection under the Constitution.
When the Constitution was being written, Beckwith explained, southern states considered slaves as property but still wanted to count slaves as part of their population in the census to get more members of Congress from the South. The North said if the South wanted it to count its «property,» or its slaves, as whole people in the census, the North would in turn count its tables, chairs and all their belongings in their homes as part of their population as well, according to the lieutenant governor.

«They came up with a Three-Fifths Compromise. They said you will only get three-fifths of a vote when it comes to your slave. And what that did, it actually limited the number of pro-slave representatives in Congress by 40%. This was a great move by the North to make sure that slavery would be eradicated in our nation,» Beckwith said. «They knew what they were doing. But now here you have Senate Democrats in today’s American Republic who do not understand that.»
«They think the Three-Fifths Compromise was something that was a scourge on Black people. That’s not what it was. And how did we get to this place? We got to this because of DEI in education. We got here because you have professors at woke schools that will not teach the history of what actually happened back in the foundations of our nation,» Beckwith continued. «Many, many men and leaders in our nation’s history knew how wicked slavery was. They knew that God had created Black people, White people, red people, all people in his image, and they were fighting for equality for all, but they’re not taught that today, and that’s why you had the Senate Democrats who were getting up talking about the Three-Fifths Compromise like it was some sort of terrible thing in our past it was not it actually was the exact opposite that helped to root out slavery and lead us into a more perfect union that we now see.»
Beckwith said the Three-Fifths Compromise was the beginning of the U.S. later evolving to where all people can have equal representation under the law.

The anti-DEI state bill passed the state House by a 64-26 vote and the state Senate by a 34-16 vote. It awaits Braun’s signature.

El Gobierno de Taiwán mantiene la alerta máxima tras las masivas maniobras militares de China
Las autoridades de Taiwán mantuvieron este miércoles un estado de alerta máxima tras las maniobras militares a gran escala efectuadas por China alrededor de la isla, según informó la guardia costera taiwanesa. El centro de respuesta marítima de emergencia del país continuó operativo mientras se monitoreaban los movimientos navales chinos, luego de que la víspera se lanzaran decenas de cohetes hacia territorio taiwanés y se desplegara un considerable número de buques de guerra y aeronaves en las inmediaciones.
Los ejercicios, denominados “Justice Mission 2025”, concluyeron oficialmente el miércoles por la noche, tras un anuncio de Beijing en el que se aseguró que sus fuerzas armadas permanecerán en estado de alerta y reforzarán su preparación para el combate. Según la declaración recogida por la guardia costera taiwanesa, aún se mantenía una presencia significativa de barcos y aviones chinos en la zona de respuesta, por lo que las fuerzas armadas de Taiwán continuarían aplicando un “mecanismo de contingencia adecuado”. No se ofrecieron detalles adicionales.
A través de un comunicado, el Ministerio de Defensa de Taiwán denunció que “las provocaciones agresivas y militaristas del Partido Comunista Chino ponen en peligro la seguridad y estabilidad regional, y han sido condenadas por aliados democráticos de la comunidad internacional”. En su discurso de Año Nuevo, el presidente Xi Jinping insistió en el mensaje de reunificación nacional, transmitido por la cadena estatal CCTV. “Los compatriotas a ambos lados del Estrecho de Taiwán están unidos por lazos de sangre más fuertes que el agua, y la tendencia histórica hacia la reunificación nacional es imparable”, afirmó.
El régimen chino reiteró que considera a Taiwán parte de su territorio y no descarta el uso de la fuerza para lograr su control. Por su parte, la isla rechaza los reclamos de soberanía de Beijing y calificó los recientes ejercicios militares de amenaza a la seguridad regional y provocación directa.
El martes por la noche, los buques chinos comenzaron a alejarse de las aguas próximas a Taiwán, según declaró Kuan Bi-ling, titular del Consejo de Asuntos Oceánicos de Taiwán, en una publicación en Facebook. Un funcionario de la guardia costera informaba a Reuters que los 11 barcos de la guardia costera china habían abandonado la zona y se alejaban del área circundante. Otro funcionario de seguridad taiwanés confirmó que los centros de respuesta de emergencia tanto de las fuerzas armadas como de la guardia costera seguían activos.
Durante la jornada, dos funcionarios de seguridad regionales señalaron a Reuters que habían detectado más de 90 buques de la marina y la guardia costera chinas en la región, incluyendo despliegues en el mar de China Meridional, las cercanías de Taiwán y el mar de China Oriental. Mientras se desarrollaban los ejercicios, los embajadores ante China de los países miembros del grupo Quad—Estados Unidos, Australia, Japón e India—se reunieron en Beijing. El embajador estadounidense David Perdue compartió en X una fotografía junto a sus homólogos, indicando que el Quad representa “una fuerza para el bien” que busca mantener un Indo-Pacífico libre y abierto, aunque no ofreció más detalles acerca del encuentro. La embajada estadounidense no respondió de inmediato a las consultas de Reuters sobre la reunión.
Debido a la magnitud de las maniobras, consideradas por China las más extensas hasta la fecha en cuanto a cobertura territorial, Taiwán se vio obligada a cancelar decenas de vuelos internos y desplegar cazas y buques para seguimiento y respuesta, además de ejecutar ejercicios rápidos de defensa y levantar barricadas en diversos puntos.
La Oficina de Asuntos de Taiwán de China, a través de su portavoz Zhang Han, calificó las maniobras como “una medida necesaria y justa” para salvaguardar la soberanía nacional y la integridad territorial, agregando que constituyen “una severa advertencia contra las fuerzas separatistas de la independencia taiwanesa y la interferencia externa”.
La agencia oficial Xinhua publicó que la simulación de “cerco” demostró la capacidad del Ejército Popular de Liberación para “presionar y contener a las fuerzas separatistas mientras se niega el acceso a interferencias externas”, citando al profesor Zhang Chi de la Universidad Nacional de Defensa de la PLA.
A pesar de la creciente intensidad de los ejercicios, el director del programa Asia del centro de estudios estadounidense Defense Priorities, Lyle Goldstein, opinó a Reuters que es improbable que Beijing inicie una guerra abierta, debido al elevado coste político y militar que supondría.

Zohran Mamdani will be first mayor to be sworn in on Quran during New York City inauguration

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s campaign confirmed on Wednesday he will make a historical move on New Year’s Day, using the Quran during his swearing-in ceremony.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old Ugandan-born socialist, will be the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first mayor to be sworn in using the Quran, the central religious text of Islam.
New York Attorney General Letitia James will host a private midnight ceremony at Old City Hall Station, a historical decommissioned subway station, before he is sworn in during a public inauguration on the steps of City Hall by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Thursday afternoon.
He will use two family Qurans, as well as one that belonged to writer and Puerto Rican activist Arturo Schomburg, who built the foundation for Harlem’s Schomburg Center for research in Black culture.

Al-Darbi was convicted of conspiracy in connection with the fatal 2017 al Qaeda terrorist bombing of a French oil tanker off the coast of Yemen, and was transferred in 2018 by the Trump administration into Saudi Arabian custody. Khalil was released, but his case remains ongoing.

Finlandia sospecha que un barco extranjero provocó una nueva rotura de cable submarino en el mar Báltico
La Policía finlandesa investiga a un buque como sospechoso de la rotura de un cable submarino de telecomunicaciones que conecta Finlandia y Estonia a través del mar Báltico, en lo que podría ser un nuevo episodio de sabotaje de infraestructuras críticas en la zona.
En colaboración con otras autoridades, la policía inició la investigación después de que la teleoperadora finlandesa Elisa notificara este miércoles que había detectado una avería en uno de sus cables submarinos dentro de la zona económica exclusiva de Estonia.
La Guardia de Fronteras identificó al buque sospechoso de provocar la avería y más tarde envió a la zona una lancha patrullera y un helicóptero, que lo retuvieron tras constatar que navegaba con una de sus anclas sumergidas en el mar.
Según un comunicado de la Policía, la guardia fronteriza ordenó al buque que izara el ancla y se trasladara a un fondeadero en aguas territoriales finlandesas.
«Las autoridades finlandesas han tomado el control del barco como parte de una operación conjunta», informó la policía, negándose a nombrar el barco o su nacionalidad, o dar más detalles sobre el barco y su tripulación.

La Fiscalía General ya presentó una acusación formal contra el buque, al que considera sospechoso de un delito grave de sabotaje y otro de interferencia agravada en las comunicaciones.
Además de la Policía y la Guardia de Fronteras, también participan en las labores de investigación las Fuerzas Armadas finlandesas, la agencia de Aduanas, la Agencia de Transporte y Comunicaciones (Traficom) y el operador de la red eléctrica finlandesa, Fingrid.
Asimismo, las autoridades finlandesas están colaborando con las de otros países, sobre todo con Estonia, para intercambiar información.
«Las autoridades finlandesas han investigado a un barco sospechoso de causar daños en un cable en el Golfo de Finlandia», indicó el presidente de Finlandia, Alexander Stubb en un mensaje en su cuenta de X.
«Finlandia está preparada para desafíos de seguridad de varios tipos, y respondemos ante ellos del modo necesario», agregó el jefe de Estado finlandés, que citó en su mensaje a la Policía, la Guardia Fronteriza y otras autoridades vinculadas a la investigación del caso, a las que el presidente agradeció su labor.
«Seguimos la situación en cooperación con el Gobierno», señaló Stubb, al tiempo que el primer ministro finlandés, Petteri Orpo, escribió en X que mantuvo una conversación con su homólogo estonio, Kristen Michal. «Nuestras autoridades están trabajando con buena cooperación», indicó Orpo.

En octubre, un tribunal finlandés desestimó la causa penal contra el capitán del Eagle S y otros tripulantes, dictaminando que la fiscalía no logró demostrar la intencionalidad y que cualquier presunta negligencia debía ser investigada por el estado de abanderamiento del buque o los países de origen de la tripulación.
