Parents of Hamas hostages urge Trump to be ‘tough with enemies and friends’ amid Israeli siege in Gaza
The parents of the American hostages still held by the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza have called on President Donald Trump to use his reputation for being «tough» and apply pressure on not only known enemies but one of his closest allies: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
There are 59 hostages still in Gaza, at least 24 of whom are assessed to be alive, including American-Israeli Edan Alexander, now 21 years old after having spent two birthdays in Hamas captivity.
Itay Chen, 19, Omer Neutra, 21, Judy Weinstein Haggai, 70, and her husband, Gadi Weinstein, 73, are all believed to have been killed by Hamas in it’s attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and whose bodies were taken into Gaza.
«I believe that the president is a very tough person, and he should be tough with the enemies and with friends as well,» Adi Alexander, who is Edan’s father, told Fox News Digital in a direct reference to Israel.

«We asked of the president to keep everybody accountable,» Alexander, who sat next to his wife, Yael, described after the second phase of a ceasefire, which was supposed to begin in March but failed and Israel resumed military operations in the Gaza Strip to the immense frustration of mediators.
In addition, the families urged Trump to keep Netanyahu «on a short leash» and to «get him back to negotiate as soon as possible and stop this thing.»
Trump this week marked his 100th day in office, and the families of the five Americans still held hostage urged him to reflect on his strategy and apply pressure on both Israel and Hamas, through both economic and diplomatic means, to secure the release of all 59 hostages.
«With the election results, we had such high hopes,» Ruby Chen, father to Itay, told reporters during a press event on Wednesday. «We know he cares about the topic, and we saw, even before the inauguration, his comments on the topic with the ‘hell to pay’ and ‘all the hostages need to come out.’»
«But I think the 100-day mark that we are at this moment, I think it’s a good time to reflect and say that the job’s not done,» said Chen, sitting next to his wife, Hagit Chen.
Trump sparked international concern in February when he suggested the Gaza Strip should be turned into the «Riviera of the Middle East,» and fears have mounted that as Washington continues to discuss potentially displacing Palestinians and Israel continues aggressive military operations, Hamas may be unwilling to give up its leverage: the hostages.

Calls within the Gaza Strip are increasing from Palestinians to return all the hostages so a day-after plan can be discussed as Palestinian civilians continue to feel the consequences of the brutal war.
«It’s easy rhetoric to say that Hamas won’t hold their side of the deal,» Orna Neutra, mother to Omer, told reporters. «If they don’t hold their side of the deal, then [Netanyahu] can return to hostilities.
«But let’s allow them to release all hostages and see if that happens or not instead of just saying they won’t do it,» she added, noting it could be another leveraging point for the Trump administration.
The families of the hostages are careful not to get overly involved in the heated political topics, but instead they have highlighted the importance of and need for a solid strategy to first secure the release of all remaining hostages, and then figure out a day-after plan.
Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has suggested that Hamas could become politically active in the Gaza Strip, but they need to fully disarm.
«I think the best approach will be just to call for both parties to rise above politics, although it will be very difficult with Hamas, which is politically struggling to survive in this region, but definitely to call on [the] Israeli government to rise above politics,» Alexander said. «Do not think about politically surviving and prioritize human life.»

The families pointed to polling from Israel that shows nearly 70% of Israelis favor ending military operations against Hamas in order to return all the hostages more than 573 days since they were abducted, including some 48% of Netanyahu’s coalition base. Some 39% of his conservative base apparently oppose the strategy, and another 13% are unsure.

While there is evident frustration among the families of the hostages, who have made clear the Israeli government has not offered anywhere near the same level of support or communication provided by both the Biden and Trump administrations, they said that, ultimately, the adversary is the terrorist organization that captured, in some instances killed, and continues to hold captive their loved ones.
«Just to be clear, Hamas is the enemy,» said Neutra, who sat next to her husband, Ronen. «Hamas committed these atrocious crimes. They’re holding on to our family members. We don’t want to see them continue to be a threat to Israel.
«But it’s about priority, and it’s about being in the situation for 19 months now,» she added.

Shutdown fight casts a shadow over jobs as Trump prepares for largest federal resignation in US history

Past government shutdowns have been more political theater than economic shock, with markets and jobs bouncing back quickly.
This time, though, President Donald Trump‘s warning that some furloughed workers may not return to their jobs raises the stakes, turning a routine disruption into a threat to an already fragile labor market.
If Trump carries out that threat, it would almost certainly face an immediate court challenge. But if it stands, a shutdown usually dismissed as partisan brinkmanship rather than financial disruption could deliver lasting economic consequences.
SHUTDOWN EXPLAINED: WHO WORKS, WHO DOESN’T AND HOW MUCH IT COSTS
Robert Conzo, CEO and managing director at The Wealth Alliance, a financial advisory firm, said that such a move would mark uncharted territory.
«If the U.S. federal government dismisses workers instead of furloughing them, I believe the labor market may see a shock with a higher unemployment rate and initial jobless claims,» Conzo told Fox News Digital.

«The big question to me is whether Trump is using this as a headline negotiation tactic or as a turning point to lower federal spending in the future. I believe using a government shutdown to dismiss federal workers would be unprecedented and face a myriad of questions. Federal workers typically are covered by civil service protections, as such, they need to be dismissed with cause,» he added.
The government is set to shut down at 12:01 a.m. ET on Wednesday if Congress fails to approve a funding extension. A shutdown requires federal agencies to send home workers in roles that are not considered essential. These furloughs are temporary; once Congress resolves the standoff, employees are brought back and receive back pay.
Each week of a shutdown trims about 0.2% from U.S. economic growth, though that loss is typically recouped once federal workers return and agencies reopen.

The job market is already on shaky ground. The Washington, D.C. area, home to a large share of federal workers, has been hit especially hard after Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) advisory board pushed for layoffs earlier this year.
Asked how many federal workers could be laid off, Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, «We may do a lot,» placing the blame squarely on Democrats for the stalemate.

The Trump administration is preparing to oversee what could be the largest mass resignation in U.S. history, with more than 100,000 federal employees scheduled to leave under its deferred resignation program.
At the same time, federal agencies have drafted plans for sweeping layoffs if lawmakers fail to strike a deal, raising the stakes for a workforce already bracing for upheaval.
And the timing couldn’t be worse: those workers are stepping into a job market that has been losing momentum, with unemployment rising to 4.3% in August — the highest since 2021.
The weak August report came on the heels of another soft reading in July, which prompted Trump to fire the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Erika McEntarfer. Her removal came hours after the agency released new data showing that job growth had been significantly overstated. The bureau revised its May and June figures downward by 258,000 jobs, marking an unusually large correction that drew sharp criticism from Trump.

The latest BLS revisions now suggest earlier reports overstated employment by more than 900,000 jobs. The adjustment, the largest correction on record and at the higher end of Wall Street forecasts, comes as Trump intensifies pressure on the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates to prop up growth.

Against that backdrop, the threat of a government shutdown looms large. Analysts warn that sidelining federal workers could add another layer of strain to a labor market already showing cracks.

Brian Mulberry, senior portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management, told Fox News Digital as many as 100,000 jobs could be at risk if a shutdown occurs, with Washington-area workers hit hardest.
Still, he noted the broader economic effect may be muted:
«Would losing 100,000 federal workers move the unemployment rate higher? The answer is no,» Mulberry said, estimating that it would add just 0.06 percentage points if private-sector hiring failed to offset the losses.

El ministro de Defensa, Guido Crosetto, dijo que “doy por descontado que los activistas serán arrestados”. “Pondría la firma para que suceda solo esto, sin ningún tipo de consecuencias.”
En uno de sus últimos posteos en la cuenta oficial de Instagram, la Flotilla marcó su ubicación y reclamó «un paso seguro».

Nadie confirma nada, pero la primera ministra Giorgia Meloni habló por teléfono del tema al presidente Donald Trump y le pidió su colaboración para evitar un final sangriento.
“Debemos asegurarnos que no haya consecuencias letales”, insistió el ministro de Defensa Guido Crosetto, que recibió a representantes del Movimiento Global en Gaza.
También se habría pedido una intervención al presidente de Israel, Isaac Herzog, amigo de Italia que estuvo hace poco en Roma por una entrevista con el Papa.
También el pontífice está moviendo los hilos diplomáticos de la Iglesia para convencer a los israelíes de asegurarse que no haya víctimas cuando los soldados israelíes asalten los barcos. Se espera una intervención pública de León XIV en cualquier momento para evitar un choque sangriento.
El lunes, 18 parlamentarios de Estados Unidos pidieron a su gobierno que garantice la seguridad de los civiles a bordo de la Global Sumud Flotilla. Es el nombre internacional de la Flotilla. La palabra “Sumud” significa resistencia, resiliencia.
“La amenaza de violencia por parte de Israel planea sobre el viaje”, señala el mensaje de los parlamentarios de Estados Unidos.
Los 18 legisladores norteamericanos revelaron que a bordo de las naves de la flotilla viajan 24 ciudadanos estadounidenses.
