Revolución, violencia y familia en la nueva epopeya de Paul Thomas Anderson
En la montaña rusa caótica y desenfrenada de Paul Thomas Anderson a través de la América contemporánea, los objetos que desaparecen del retrovisor dejan de verse, pero no se esfuman.
Las luchas políticas no mueren en Una batalla tras otra, solo se repiten. A veces envejecen y se transforman en personajes paranoicos, consumidores de marihuana y pijamas, como Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio), un revolucionario venido a menos que vive apartado con su hija Willa (Chase Infiniti). En la película de Anderson, la opresión y la resistencia se sienten como ciclos palpables en una odisea que recorre décadas, donde la violencia armada, el supremacismo blanco y las deportaciones de inmigrantes se entrelazan en una danza que resulta a la vez absurda y trágica.
Pero “Una batalla tras otra” también puede describirse como una entrañable historia sobre un padre enfrentando la realidad de que su hija adolescente tiene un teléfono celular. Es un ejemplo de cómo la aproximación desestabilizadora de Anderson a temas complejos puede volverse emotiva y reveladora. Normalmente, una epopeya de casi tres horas y varias generaciones se consideraría “monumental”, pero Anderson trabaja con un estilo más áspero y compasivo que penetra, de forma extraña pero aguda, la psique estadounidense.
“Una batalla tras otra” llega tras meses de especulación y cierto escepticismo, ya que es, con diferencia, la película de mayor presupuesto y escala de Anderson. Pero la escala adquiere otros matices en su cine. Magnolia es modesta en muchos sentidos, pero resulta difícil encontrar una película más ambiciosa. “Petróleo sangriento” no incluyó mucho espectáculo más allá de precarias torres de petróleo, pero se siente tan grande como el imponente Daniel Plainview de Daniel Day-Lewis, es decir, aterradoramente enorme.
Del mismo modo, “Una batalla tras otra”, filmada en VistaVision, es grande y extensa, pero transmite cercanía y ritmo ágil. Esto se debe, en parte, al impulso de su prólogo inicial y a la energía arrolladora de Teyana Taylor, una presencia potente en pantalla. Su Perfidia Beverly Hills protagoniza el inicio de la película, dejando una huella tan poderosa que la historia tarda media hora en recomponerse tras su partida.
Al principio, vemos a Perfidia vestida de negro, cruzando un paso elevado. Debajo, un centro de detención de inmigrantes. El ambiente es turbulento. Bob se encuentra allí, listo para encender fuegos artificiales o explosivos, pero sin entender el plan. Ella le tranquiliza: “Hazlo grande, hazlo brillante. Inspírame”.
Ellos y sus cómplices rápidamente exponen sus intenciones, liberando a los inmigrantes, inmovilizando a los guardias militares y declarándose como el grupo radical French 75. Según Perfidia, esto es el principio de una revolución. La causa es justa, pero la motivación es visceral y sexual. La fabricación de explosivos y el sexo van de la mano. Bob sigue a Perfidia, enamorado y fascinado. La madre de Perfidia no cree en la relación: “Ella es una corredora y tú una roca”, le dice.
En paralelo, Perfidia se cruza con el Coronel Lockjaw (Sean Penn), militar de mandíbula rígida que también cae rendido ante Perfidia. En su primer encuentro, ella le apunta con un arma y le ordena “Get it up”, sin referirse a las manos. Estas escenas intensas, seguidas por el embarazo de Perfidia y nuevos problemas policiales para French 75, preparan el drama que avanza dieciséis años después, con una erupción frenética de poder negro y femenino.
En ese momento, las fuerzas combatidas por los radicales han recuperado su ventaja. Lockjaw, ahora interpretado por un Penn tenso y maníaco, actúa con impunidad y dirige redadas ilegales a su antojo. Algunos poderosos respaldan sus métodos. Un grupo supremacista blanco secreto, The Christmas Adventurers, le ofrece membresía y se saludan con un “feliz Navidad” mientras hablan de limpiar la Tierra.
French 75 prácticamente ha desaparecido. Bob permanece solo con la hija de ambos, ahora de dieciséis años. Se ha desconectado del mundo: llama “Homie” al amigo de su hija, se pierde con los pronombres y suele tener un cigarrillo de marihuana en la mano. DiCaprio ofrece su interpretación más cercana al “Dude” de El gran Lebowski, en línea con su inclinación reciente por personajes menos pulidos y propensos al error (“Los asesinos de la luna de las flores”, “Había una vez en Hollywood”).
A Willa le atribuyen el coraje de su madre. Infiniti, debutante, transmite una fortaleza interior inconfundible. Cuando Lockjaw va tras Willa, estalla un nuevo ciclo de violencia estatal.
En ese contexto aparece Benicio Del Toro, en un papel que combina sensei y figura al estilo Harriet Tubman para los inmigrantes, guiando a Bob cuando la policía se aproxima. Es quizá la parte más desordenada del filme, pero Sergio St. Carlos, su personaje, representa la personificación más clara de la libertad. Es libre porque su propósito es firme y ético.
La película abunda en convoyes policiales y maniobras militares que convierten la América actual en un campo de batalla. Inspirada en “Vineland” de Thomas Pynchon, comparte algunos choques culturales con la anterior adaptación de Anderson, “Vicio propio”. Sin embargo, “Una batalla tras otra”, con una partitura envolvente de Johnny Greenwood que aporta un matiz épico, resulta ferozmente actual y moralmente motivada.
Eso hace de “Una batalla tras otra”, con su retrato directo del racismo, la xenofobia y el vigilantismo, una excepción en casi todos los sentidos para el Hollywood actual. Seguramente generará debate, como todas las buenas películas. Algunos considerarán su retrato de Estados Unidos como confuso o caótico. Pero esos elementos también tienen un aire de verdad, al igual que el espíritu combativo que atraviesa la historia.
“Una batalla tras otra”, un estreno de Warner Bros., está clasificada como R por la Motion Picture Association debido a su lenguaje, violencia, contenido sexual y consumo de drogas. Duración: 170 minutos. Cuatro estrellas de cuatro.

FIRST ON FOX: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin on Thursday will eliminate the «2009 Obama EPA Endangerment Finding,» which set in motion most federal greenhouse gas emissions standards for vehicles, saving Americans billions.
The 2009 development was an EPA finding that carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and three other greenhouse gases «endanger the public health and welfare of current and future generations» under the Clean Air Act — leading to a slew of new restrictions and regulations.
An ensuing Supreme Court ruling in Massachusetts v. EPA found greenhouse gases qualify as air pollutants and that if the EPA determines they endanger public health or welfare it can regulate them.
«As I traveled across all 50 states this past year, I heard from countless Americans who not only dislike the (motor-vehicle) start-stop feature but passionately advocated for this mechanism to be a thing of the past,» Zeldin said of the major recission made Thursday.

Zeldin said automakers shouldn’t be forced to adopt or be rewarded for using technologies that represent a «climate participation trophy» with no meaningful reduction in actual pollution.
The former New York lawmaker said consumer choice is a priority for his agency, and that his office will continue to advocate for «commonsense rules.»

All federal greenhouse gas emission standards for vehicles and engines subsequent to the 2009 declaration will be rescinded, a source familiar with the situation said.
When it comes to the start-stop off-cycle technology, a credit for it was created by the EPA in 2012 and quickly infuriated motorists who hear their engine click off then on again at a stoplight or in the teller line at the bank.

The start-stop became a regulatory loophole allowing automakers to claim greenhouse gas credits without actually delivering empirical emission-reduction or human health benefits.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the move to rescind the 2009 finding will «be the largest deregulatory action in American history, and it will save the American people $1.3 trillion in crushing regulations,» according to multiple reports.
However, the climate change field appears eager to litigate the new rule, as the nonprofit green-focused law firm Earthjustice signaled as much to PBS.

«The Trump administration is abandoning its core responsibility to keep us safe from extreme weather and accelerating climate change,» Earthjustic president Abigail Dillen told the outlet.
«There is no way to reconcile EPA’s decision with the law, the science and the reality of disasters that are hitting us harder every year. Earthjustice and our partners will see the Trump administration in court.»
Some states, however, were not supportive of the news including Colorado, where Gov. Jared Polis said he «stands by (the) science» of the former EPA guidance.
«Protecting people’s health and making our air cleaner should never be a partisan issue,» Polis said in a statement.
«The science is clear that pollution from cars and trucks harms our air quality and puts families — especially kids, seniors, and those with health conditions — at greater risk. Rolling back long-standing protections creates uncertainty for consumers and businesses at a time when we should be investing in cleaner air, innovation, and energy diversity.»
«These investments aren’t just the right thing for our climate, it’s good business,» the Democrat concluded. «Clear, science-based standards give companies the certainty they need to invest and create jobs. Colorado will continue to stand behind science and protect the health and well-being of Coloradans.»

South Korea’s espionage agency, the National Intelligence Service, informed lawmakers Thursday that it thinks North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter is near to being set apart as the regime’s future leader, The Associated Press reported.
Kim is the third generation of men in his family to rule North Korea.
In a closed-door briefing, NIS officials said they are closely monitoring whether Kim’s daughter — believed to be named Kim Ju Ae and around 13 years old — appears with him before thousands of delegates at the upcoming Workers’ Party Congress, said lawmaker Lee Seong Kweun, who attended the meeting.

«In the past, (NIS) described Kim Ju Ae as being in the midst of ‘successor training.’ What was notable today is that they used the term ‘successor-designate stage,’ a shift that’s quite significant,» Lee noted, according to the outlet.
In 2023, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service indicated to lawmakers that the North Korean leader and his wife probably had an older son as well as a younger, third child of unknown gender, according to The Associated Press.
