Showdown for the House: Democrats, Republicans brace for high-stakes midterm clash

Democrats, energized by their convincing victories earlier this month in the 2025 elections, are betting those results foreshadow a House flip in next year’s midterm showdowns.
The party out of power needs a net gain of just three seats to grab back the majority from the Republicans, who’ve controlled the House for nearly three years. And the party in power, which nowadays is clearly the Republicans, traditionally faces political headwinds in the midterm elections.
At stake: the success of President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda.
«We’ll take back the House in 2026,» Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chair Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington state told Fox News Digital.

But for Republicans, aiming to protect their fragile majority, the magic number is also three.
«The only number I’m concerned about is three. We have three Republicans in seats Kamala Harris carried,» said Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina, chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee. He pointed to districts carried during the 2024 presidential election by then-Vice President Kamala Harris.

And Hudson, in a Fox News Digital interview, highlighted that Democrats have «13 sitting in seats Donald Trump won. They’ve got 21 more sitting in seats that Donald Trump barely lost. So there, there are only a few seats up for grabs this time, most of them are Democrat seats.»
The most recent national polls indicate Democrats with the upper hand in the 2026 battle for the House majority.
But DelBene cautioned, «We take nothing for granted.»
And Hudson was optimistic that Republicans would «grow our House majority.»

High prices and out-of-control cost of living were key issues that boosted Trump and Republicans in the 2024 elections, as they won back the White House and Senate majority and kept control of the House.
But what a difference a year makes.
Democrats, with an across-the-board focus on affordability, overperformed at the polls as they enjoyed sweeping ballot box success earlier this month. Democrats scored double-digit gubernatorial wins in blue-leaning but competitive New Jersey and Virginia, and convincing victories in high-profile showdowns in battlegrounds Georgia and Pennsylvania and left-tilting New York City and California.
«It was clear that when folks are talking about the biggest issues affecting their communities, and right now, affordability, with the rising costs people have seen as a result of the policies put in place by this administration and Republicans in Congress, they rejected that,» DelBene said as she pointed to the 2025 election results.
DEMOCRATS DOUBLE-DOWN ON THIS KEY ISSUE
«Absolutely, we saw that in governor’s races like Virginia and New Jersey, but [also] in races across the country,» she added.
The most recent Fox News national poll was another warning sign for Trump and the GOP.
Three-quarters of voters questioned in the survey viewed the economy negatively, and large numbers of respondents, including Republicans, said their costs for groceries, utilities, healthcare and housing have gone up this year.
The poll indicated that voters blame the president, with nearly twice as many pointing fingers at Trump than former President Joe Biden, when asked who is responsible for the current economy.
Only 38% of those questioned gave the president a thumbs-up to how he’s handling the economy. And Trump’s overall approval rating, at 41%, was the lowest of his second term in office in Fox News polling.
«Affordability is still the number one issue for families. Housing, food, health care, child care, energy costs all going up directly as a result of policies put in place by Republicans in Congress and Donald Trump. And they promised to lower costs on day one,» DelBene said.

Pointing to last year’s elections, she said, «That was their big message. They were going to lower costs. It has been a big broken promise, and people are feeling that and and that’s had a big impact and will continue. People want folks who are going to stand up to them for them, not just be blindly loyal to the president.»
Hudson, asked about the political impact of the cost of living, took aim at the former president.
«There are challenges out there with the economy, because Biden broke it, and House Republicans, working with President Trump, are going to fix it, and we’re working very hard to do that,» he said.

«Certainly, we could always improve the way we communicate with our voters about it,» he added. «But we are laser-focused on the issues that matter to them. You know, it’s the cost of things, it’s the security in their neighborhood, it’s a secure border. We are very focused on that, and we’ve delivered a lot of things that are going to make their lives better.»

And looking ahead to next year, he added, «Come tax season, a lot of families are going to be really happy to see they’ve got a lot more take-home pay, and that’s because of Donald Trump and House Republicans.»
The DCCC, in its messaging, has tied vulnerable House Republicans to Trump.
DelBene argued that it’s «Republican policies that are hurting American families, the tariffs that Donald Trump has put in place that have raised costs for families across the country, their ongoing work to gut healthcare across this country.»
And she charged that the «policies that they have prioritized have been favoring the wealthy and the well-connected, tax breaks for the wealthy and the well-connected, but hurting working families across the country. People are feeling that, and we’re going to continue to call that out.»
Hudson called the 2025 elections a «wake-up call» for GOP voters and that he wants Trump «out there on the trail» in next year’s midterms.

Plenty of Republicans have downplayed the Democrats’ high-profile victories, noting they largely took place in blue-leaning states.
Hudson noted the top elections took place in «Democrat states,» but added, «I think our big takeaway as Republicans is the Democrats were energized. They turned out at record levels. Republicans turned out in normal levels.»
«I think there’s a wake-up call there to conservatives and Republicans who are happy with the direction of the country. They’re glad President Trump’s back in the White House. But if they want to keep this momentum going, they’ve got to show up and vote,» he said.
Many of Trump’s MAGA supporters are considered low-propensity voters, who head to the polls only when Trump is on the ballot. But Trump won’t be on the ballot in the 2026 midterms.

Hudson, who noted that «House Republicans are very closely aligned with President Trump, and we’re supporting his agenda,» said that «we want him out there on the trail, campaigning with our candidates. I think he brings a lot of energy.»
Pointing to «a lot of folks who don’t vote when he’s not on the ballot,» Hudson said, «I don’t need all of them to show up, but I need some of them. And so having President Trump out there will be a big benefit for us.»

El fuerte descargo de la abogada argentina acusada de racismo en Brasil: “Me sexualizaron y se burlaron de mí”
Mientras aguarda la resolución de la Justicia brasileña, Agostina Páez, la abogada argentina detenida por racismo, hizo un fuerte descargo con motivo del Día de la Mujer y cuestionó las críticas que recibió.
“En estos meses conocí una cara muy dura del mundo. Viví y sigo viviendo situaciones profundamente violentas. Desde el segundo uno de todo lo que pasó sufrí violencia. Muchos hablan, pero apenas conocen el 1% de la historia. Sin embargo, mi cara y mi nombre se mostraron una y otra vez por el mundo, mientras nunca se vio de la misma forma a quienes me trataron mal, me sexualizaron y se burlaron de mí”, comenzó el extenso comunicado que compartió en sus redes.

En el mismo posteo aseguró sufrir violencia en el proceso judicial. “Quienes deberían actuar con imparcialidad ni siquiera tienen en cuenta el contexto de violencia que sufrí como mujer extranjera, ignoran pruebas y todo se limita a lo que unos cuantos cuentan”, resaltó.
También mencionó que a los cuatro días de haber sido acusada, la policía lanzó una campaña antirracismo “sin tener contexto, ni estar condenada, llevándose de unos segundos de video”. “Y no, no soy racista”, aseguró.

A la par, denunció que recibió “mensajes llenos de odio” y hasta amenazas de muerte, violación y maltrato. Sin embargo, dentro de la grave situación que está atravesando, aseguró, rescató una enseñanza. “También aprendí algo: la fuerza de una mujer. Porque a pesar de que intentan quebrarme, humillarme, atacarme y silenciarme, sigo aquí. Hay días en los que siento que no puedo más, que no aguanto más, que me quiero morir. Pero junto fuerzas y decido seguir de pie, afrontar lo que me toca”.
“Hay muchas batallas que atravesamos en silencio. Pero no dejemos que nos quiten la fuerza, ni la valentía de seguir de pie. Confío en Dios que es testigo y que pondrá las cosas en su lugar”, insistió la joven abogada y añadió: “El Día de la Mujer no se celebra, se conmemora porque nace de la lucha de mujeres que enfrentaron violencia, desigualdad y silencio”.

Además, Páez hizo especial foco en la acusación de racismo. “Ser racista es discriminar, despreciar, excluir o tratar a una persona como menos por el color de su piel. Una reacción emocional, con un gesto en medio de una discusión y frente a agravios no me convierte en racista, porque nunca hubo esa intención”, afirmó.
Asimismo, criticó que nunca se tomó en cuenta la agresión que ella sufrió por parte del empleado del bar. “Entiendo que era más llamativo un titular que dice: ‘abogada argentina realiza gestos racistas a un trabajador de un bar’, pero ese recorte omite el contexto de ‘luego de que él realizara gestos sexuales mientras le gritaba cosas’”.

“Por eso, cuando una mujer es agredida, insultada o humillada, muchas veces la reacción emocional también nace desde ese lugar de defensa frente a una situación de sentirse acorralada frente a un posible abusador. Mucho más en un contexto de estar en otro país, sintiéndome perseguida por hombres. Eso no significa justificar nada ni negar que el racismo exista o que sea grave”, reconoció.
En su descargo, Agostina también se disculpó con las personas que “sinceramente se hayan sentido ofendidas por el video o por la imagen que se instaló” sobre ella. “Ese nunca fue mi propósito”, remarcó y aclaró: “Pedir perdón no significa asumir una intención racista, porque no la hubo”.
Sobre el final del comunicado, la abogada santiagueña también cuestionó a quienes pusieron foco en su profesión: “¿Desde cuando yo tengo que ser un modelo universal de moral, con una conducta ideal, para el resto de la sociedad? ¿Por qué por tener un título se me quiere colocar en un estándar más alto que el resto y con la responsabilidad de ‘ser ejemplo’?“.
“¿Se olvidan que detrás de un título hay una persona? ¿Por qué tengo que cumplir expectativas morales? Ninguna profesión convierte a una persona en una referente moral obligatoria. La responsabilidad profesional se limita al ejercicio de la función que tienes que cumplir, en mi caso, defender derechos. No soy un manual de conducta, es mi vida, y no tengo por qué, ni quiero, ser ejemplo de conducta ideal de nadie. Soy humana y es mi vida, me puedo equivocar y aprender miles de millones de veces», concluyó.

Virginia Dems send Spanberger bill that could let some repeat offenders out without secured bond, expert warns

A top national figure in the bail industry warned of the dangers behind a Virginia bill heading to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s desk that would remove bond requirements for previously convicted felons.
Virginia state Del. Katrina Callsen, D-Charlottesville, drafted HB 357, which critics say makes it easier for criminals to get out of jail on an unsecured bond. The bill passed both chambers in Richmond along party lines.
In comments to Fox News Digital on Monday, National Association of Bail Agents President Michelle Esquenazi said she was familiar with the Virginia legislation and that it will only serve to erode public safety.
«We believe any time recidivist offenders are released due to unsecured bail policies, it puts communities in direct danger,» Esquenazi said. «Many are unaware of how secured bonds insulate public safety throughout the United States of America.»

«This bill is in direct contrast to the needs of all communities in Virginia, whether they are Republican, Democrat, or Independent.»
Esquenazi said criminals don’t choose victims based on political ideology and that policymakers have failed to understand that bringing criminals to justice should be nonpartisan.
While Callsen did not respond to requests for comment, similar legislation in recent years has often come about as a wish for offenders to receive «second chances» — a dynamic Fox News Digital asked Esquenazi about.
«The secured bail industry is an industry of second chances,» she said.
«However, if you’re going to continue to commit crime, policymakers have to understand and take into account that committing crime is not a mandate. It’s a career choice.»

Policies like HB 357 serve to give recidivists more than just second but third and subsequent chances because a second chance is «only a title,» which the policies themselves far exceed, she said.
Justice Forward Virginia, a progressive criminal justice reform group focused on advancing related legislation, listed the bill in its section of 2026 priorities. The group did not respond to a request for comment.
Callsen’s bill removes language from Code of Virginia § 19.2-123 governing «Release of accused on unsecured bail or promise to appear» that currently states any person arrested for a felony or who is on bond for an unrelated arrest or on parole may only be released upon securing a secured bond.
Instead, it retains only language providing preestablished conditions of release for that offender.
Other critics took to X, including Club For Growth’s Andrew Follett, who posted a passage from Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn about a civilian being punished more for being caught with a concealed knife than a felon for whom it would be «mere misbehavior; tradition» — and commented that «Democrats have a crush on criminals — it isn’t more complicated than that.»
«Under leftist ideology, society is responsible for crime, not individuals,» Follett said.
«Or, [Virginia House] Speaker Don Scott is preparing for his next arrest,» quipped another X user.

Scott, D-Portsmouth, served more than 7 years of a 10-year 1994 sentence for federal crack cocaine-related charges — and was one of thousands of convicts who had their rights to vote and serve in office restored by GOP Gov. Robert F. McDonnell in 2013.
After former President Biden pardoned him in 2025, Scott said that his «journey from being arrested as a law student to standing here today as the first Black Speaker of the House of Delegates in Virginia’s 405-year history is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and transformative power of second chances,» according to Hampton Roads’ ABC affiliate.

Reino Unido inició misiones aéreas defensivas en apoyo de los Emiratos Árabes y derribó drones iraníes en varias zonas de Medio Oriente
Aviones de combate del Reino Unido iniciaron misiones aéreas defensivas en apoyo de Emiratos Árabes Unidos y derribaron drones en distintas zonas de Medio Oriente en medio de la guerra regional, informó el lunes el Ministerio de Defensa británico.
El ministro de Defensa, John Healey, confirmó ante el Parlamento la participación de cazas británicos en operaciones de defensa aérea. “El Reino Unido está realizando misiones aéreas defensivas en apoyo de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos”, declaró el funcionario.
Healey indicó que aviones Typhoon interceptaron y destruyeron dos drones durante las operaciones. “Los tifones derribaron con éxito dos drones, uno sobre Jordania y el segundo en dirección a Bahréin”, afirmó.
El anuncio coincidió con la llegada de más bombarderos estadounidenses B-52 a la base aérea británica de Fairford, en el suroeste de Inglaterra. Periodistas de AFP observaron el lunes el aterrizaje de nuevos aparatos, después de que el primero llegara el viernes.
La base de Fairford constituye uno de los puntos clave que el Reino Unido puso a disposición de Estados Unidos para operaciones vinculadas al conflicto. La otra instalación es la base de Diego García, situada en el océano Índico.
Según explicó Healey, el gobierno británico autorizó el uso de ambas instalaciones para misiones concretas de carácter defensivo. El ministro señaló que estas operaciones tienen como objetivo neutralizar misiles iraníes en su punto de lanzamiento.
Mientras Londres refuerza su actividad militar en la región, el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores anunció medidas de seguridad para su personal diplomático en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. La cancillería comunicó que retirará temporalmente a los familiares del personal de la embajada.
El organismo explicó que la decisión responde a una medida preventiva en medio de la escalada regional. A pesar de esa medida, el gobierno británico informó que sus representaciones diplomáticas en el país continuarán funcionando con normalidad.
Las dos embajadas británicas en Emiratos, ubicadas en Abu Dhabi y Dubái, mantendrán sus operaciones. Las autoridades no anunciaron la suspensión de servicios consulares.
El conflicto también generó problemas de transporte para ciudadanos británicos en la región. Se estima que miles de personas del Reino Unido permanecen en Emiratos Árabes Unidos debido a la interrupción de vuelos comerciales provocada por la guerra.
El ministro Healey informó al Parlamento que más de 170.000 personas registraron su presencia en Medio Oriente ante el gobierno británico. El registro forma parte del sistema de asistencia a ciudadanos en zonas de crisis. El funcionario indicó además que tres vuelos chárter despegaron hasta ahora para evacuar personas desde la región.
El Reino Unido también envió medios militares adicionales al Mediterráneo oriental. Helicópteros Wildcat y Merlin llegaron a Chipre como parte de las medidas de refuerzo adoptadas por Londres.
Healey anunció además el despliegue de un buque de guerra con capacidad de defensa aérea. El HMS Dragon zarpará hacia el Mediterráneo oriental “en los próximos días”, afirmó el ministro. La decisión surgió tras críticas del gobierno chipriota, que cuestionó la velocidad de la respuesta británica para reforzar la defensa de la isla.
En paralelo, el gobierno británico negó que exista una decisión para desplegar un portaaviones en la región. Downing Street rechazó versiones sobre el envío del HMS Prince of Wales al escenario del conflicto.
Un portavoz del primer ministro Keir Starmer señaló que el buque permanece en estado de alerta. “El HMS Prince of Wales siempre ha estado en máxima alerta”, declaró.
El funcionario explicó que el Ministerio de Defensa tomó medidas para aumentar la preparación del portaaviones. “El Ministerio de Defensa está aumentando la preparación del portaaviones, reduciendo el tiempo que tardaría en zarpar para cualquier despliegue, pero no se ha tomado ninguna decisión sobre su despliegue”, afirmó.
