EXCLUSIVE: One of the Democratic Party’s top rising stars, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, is coming under increasing fire as critics accuse her of pulling a «bait and switch» on voters by abandoning her affordability promises in favor of tax increases on «just about anything that moves.»
A new ad released by Unleash Prosperity on Monday slammed Spanberger over her affordability promises as Virginia Democrats propose new taxes on everyday expenses like dry cleaning, gym memberships and pet care. Unleash Prosperity’s ad puts it bluntly, saying, «Virginia can’t afford this.»
The governor has not publicly supported or signed the measures. A statement by the governor’s office sent to Fox News Digital on Monday emphasized that Spanberger did not sign the tax bills into law «because the General Assembly never passed them, and the bills never reached her desk.» The statement said that Spanberger has «remained laser-focused on addressing high costs for Virginians.»
However, Spanberger has supported a broader set of revenue measures since taking office, including proposals targeting digital services and business activity, as part of an effort to fund priorities such as education and healthcare.

Steve Moore, an economist who co-founded Unleash Prosperity, told Fox News Digital that while Spanberger cashed in on Virginians’ worries over prices, she «raced out of the gate with all of these very liberal policies, including tax increases on just about anything that moves in Virginia.»
Moore said Democrats across the country should take Spanberger’s decline as a «warning» ahead of 2028.
There has been much buzz around Spanberger and her gubernatorial victory last year, which resulted in Republicans being ousted from power in Virginia. The Democratic Party selected her to give its response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union, further evidencing her stardom.
Yet, despite the Democrats elevating her and even floating her as a presidential or vice-presidential pick, Moore said Virginians have been «shocked about that,» explaining why her approval ratings have «absolutely plummeted.»
«She has seen one of the swiftest declines in her popularity in the first six months in office that I’ve seen in many years of politics,» Moore said.
Forty-six percent of Virginians disapprove of her job performance, while 47% approve, according to a recent Washington Post-Schar School poll. Compared with Virginia governors from both parties since 1994, Spanberger has the highest disapproval rating at this point in her term.
In contrast, predecessor Gov. Glenn Youngkin had a 54-39 job approval rating at this point in his term, with the highest favorability going to Democrat Mark Warner – now Virginia’s senior senator – at 78-20.
Moore called Spanberger’s tumbling ratings «the price for her bait-and-switch tax hike on Virginia residents and small businesses.»

«She campaigned on affordability, and nearly on day one in office, she and Virginia Democrats in Richmond endorsed a catalog of left-wing tax increase proposals on everything from dry cleaners to dog groomers, which make Virginia look like California,» he said.
«Spanberger promised to be a pro-business moderate Democrat,» he went on, quipping, «Maybe she should be known as ‘Scam-Berger.’»
Moore said Spanberger’s quick decline in the polls does not bode well for the Democratic Party’s hopes of taking back the White House in 2028.
«Spanberger is not alone,» he explained. «We’re seeing that with a lot of Democrats around the country; they run as moderates and as soon as they get in, they move to the extreme left.»
«You’re seeing Democrats who are governors and mayors across the country who are advancing very liberal pro-tax policies that are anti-business. And I think it’s a very tough agenda for Democrats to run with in 2028 on the national picture,» he went on.
«That should be a warning signal to Democrats across the country.»

Last week Trump took a similar line of criticism against Spanberger ahead of meetings in the state. He warned in a Truth Social post that her policies are triggering a tax base exodus similar to New York and California.
«She is adding so many Taxes, a Food and Beverage Tax, Digital Services Tax, Utilities Tax, and more,» Trump wrote. «It has lost its Energy, Vitality, and Strength. People are leaving that would never have even thought of doing so!»
In a statement shared with Fox News Digital, Spanberger’s office slammed criticisms of the governor raising taxes as «misinformation.»
«The volume of misinformation — spread across social media and repeated in press coverage — made a clarification necessary. The facts are straightforward,» the statement said. «Governor Abigail Spanberger did not sign dozens of tax bills into law — because the General Assembly never passed them, and the bills never reached her desk.»
The office added that «in the opening months of her administration, Governor Spanberger has remained laser-focused on addressing high costs for Virginians» and is «also working alongside legislators and local communities to attract new capital investment.»
Spanberger has also pushed back on the criticism herself. In a post on X, she said Trump and his allies were mischaracterizing her policies.
«The president and his allies are talking about taxes that our state legislature never even voted on and I certainly didn’t sign,» she wrote. «Why? Because if they don’t flood the zone with fake news about fake taxes, people might hear about the bills I am signing to lower energy costs, strengthen our schools, make housing more affordable, and bring billions of dollars of business investment to Virginia.»

A Spanberger spokesperson added that businesses have announced «more than $500 million in new investment in the commonwealth since Governor Spanberger took office in January,» while accusing Trump of focusing on politics instead of economic stability.
«The ballgame changed when the President — whose been busy raising costs for Virginians by starting a reckless war that has skyrocketed inflation and driven gas prices up to $4 — strong-armed states into drawing more Republican congressional seats that he asserted he was ‘entitled’ to before the midterms,» the governor’s spokesperson said. «As prices rise in Trump’s economy, Governor Spanberger will continue her work with both parties to address the high housing, healthcare and energy costs that Virginians are feeling.»

La firme defensa de los inmigrantes y su férreo rechazo a la guerra de Medio Oriente, con duras posiciones que lo enfrentaron al presidente estadounidense Donald Trump, emparentan al actual pontífice con Jorge Bergoglio.
“Hubo sin duda cambios formales, empezando por los más simbólicos, como la vestimenta, y un regreso a la tradición en alguna ceremonia. También entiendo que hubo cambios organizativos y estructurales”, dijo a TN la periodista y escritora italiana Francesca Ambrogetti, autora del libro “El Pastor” sobre el papa Francisco.
Por ejemplo, la biógrafa de Bergoglio citó “la supresión de la Pontificia Comisión para la Infancia, que había querido el papa Francisco, y la cancelación de la segunda edición de la Jornada Mundial de los Niños, que estaba prevista para septiembre de este año”.
El legado de Francisco en 12 años de pontificado
Bergoglio revolucionó la Iglesia en sus 12 años de pontificado. Hizo mucho lío, como él mismo le pidió a los jóvenes en una recordada arenga en la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud en julio de 2013 en Río de Janeiro.
A un año de su muerte, los feligreses lo recuerdan por su estilo informal, bien austero y descontracturado. Pero también por varios hitos:
- Fue el primer papa en escribir sobre ecología en Laudato Sí.
- Buscó reformar la curia en una lucha que le granjeó poderosos enemigos internos.
- Puso la transparencia en el foco de su gobierno. Ni bien asumió, ordenó una auditoría internacional e impulsó herramientas para alejar cualquier práctica sospechosa en las arcas del Vaticano.
- Combatió los abusos de sacerdotes en la Iglesia. Generó instancias e instrumentos para evitar estos hechos y sancionar a sus responsables.
- Moldeó una Iglesia más austera y dio el ejemplo. Vivió en un departamento sencillo, de 70 metros cuadrados. Nunca se tomó vacaciones y solo fue una vez a Castel Gandolfo, la residencia de verano de los papas.
- Logró una mayor universalización de la Iglesia. Cambió el colegio de cardenales. La mayoría de sus miembros eran europeos, en especial italianos. Hoy casi la mitad son de países no europeos, muchos de ellos de África y Asia.
- Abrió la Iglesia al diálogo interno. Recibió a todos los fieles, sin excepciones. Así, rescató a las periferias más postergadas y alejadas.
- Le tendió la mano a los divorciados y habló de manera abierta sobre la homosexualidad.
- Privilegió el rol de la mujer, más allá de las limitaciones que aún persisten. Cuando asumió, trabajaban 846 mujeres en el Vaticano. A la fecha de su fallecimiento, eran 1165. Dejó una vicegobernadora del Vaticano y una directora de los Museos Vaticanos.

Qué cambió en el Vaticano tras la muerte de Francisco
La muerte de Francisco dejó un vacío, en especial para los argentinos. El nuevo papa es un personaje por ahora distante en comparación con su antecesor.
Los demás latinoamericanos, así como los italianos que abrazaron al papa argentino como suyo, también sienten la falta de esa presencia fresca, ya sea con un mate en la mano, rompiendo todo protocolo o con sus sencillos zapatos gastados y ortopédicos.
“El Vaticano, en este último año, es percibido como más estructurado, menos espontáneo, más diplomático, menos cercano, reflejando, como suele ocurrir en la vida de la Iglesia, el estilo del nuevo papa», dijo Ambrogetti.
Pero no ha habido un giro radical de rumbo. León XIV eligió el camino de la continuidad, con énfasis en la agenda social, una fuerte presencia internacional y reformas internas pero con matices personales. Se trata de moldear la Iglesia con su propia marca de agua.

En especial, en este primer año, el nuevo papa buscó acercar a los distintos sectores de la Iglesia para acabar con la turbulenta división entre reformistas y conservadores que caracterizó el papado de Francisco y que tantos cuestionamientos y problemas le trajo durante su poco más de 12 años de pontificado. El mensaje hoy es de “equilibrio” interno.
“En muchos aspectos sustanciales, el legado de Francisco permanece intacto. El Colegio de Cardenales refleja, y seguirá reflejando por mucho tiempo, la universalización de la Iglesia que quiso el papa argentino, nombrando representantes de países que jamás habían participado”, señaló Ambrogetti.
Además, afirmó: “La mayoría de los nuevos miembros tienen una trayectoria más pastoral que de funcionarios, y esta visión se va a continuar reflejando en las comunidades eclesiásticas esparcidas por el mundo”.

“Será difícil retroceder en la presencia femenina en el Gobierno de la Iglesia, impulsada por el papa argentino, y la transparencia, lo mismo que la transparencia en la gestión financiera y económica, y también en el proceso sinodal iniciado para que se escuchen todas las voces, incluso las más periféricas”, indicó.
Para Ambrogetti, “la Iglesia es peregrina por definición y por esencia. Creo que su camino va a seguir siendo hacia adelante, aunque, como suele ocurrir en la mayoría de los procesos, no en línea recta. Recuerdo una imagen del camino de la Iglesia, que figura en un documento del Concilio Vaticano II, la de la marea creciente que adelanta y retrocede, pero que en cada movimiento deja su marca en la arena más avanzada”, concluyó.
Ahora, los argentinos aguardan la visita de León XIV a la Argentina, la que nunca pudo cumplir Francisco.
“Es muy probable que el papa visite Uruguay, junto con Argentina y Perú, a fines de noviembre o principios de diciembre”, dijo recientemente el arzobispo de Montevideo, el cardenal Daniel Sturla.
De concretarse, sería la primera visita de un papa al país desde que Juan Pablo II viajó a la Argentina del 6 al 12 de abril de 1987, hace ya casi 40 años.

Democratic House candidate Sarah Trone Garriott’s campaign is on the defensive after a resurfaced video showed her recounting her role in the marriage of a pair of satanists while serving as a minister-in-training.
Trone Garriott, a Lutheran minister running in a battleground House district in November’s midterm election, participated in the wedding of a satanist couple in 2006 while serving as an intern pastor in a West Virginia parish.
Nearly two decades later, she delivered remarks for the Des Moines Storytellers Project, where she reflected that the marriage of two satanists in the church offered a «spiritual lesson» about love.
«He asked me to pick the scriptures,» Trone Garriott said on stage in 2023, referring to the senior pastor. «Irritated, I flipped through the Bible. Should I pick something with Satan in it to make them feel more at home?»

«Eventually, I just put the bookmark in at 1 Corinthians 13,» she continued. «If you have ever been to a Christian wedding, you’ve probably heard this scripture. All they would get from me was [a] basic Lutheran wedding.»
«When the Apostle Paul wrote these words, he certainly never had in mind a small town in West Virginia, two satanists and a Lutheran pastor in training,» Trone Garriott said. «But Paul knew people, and people haven’t changed that much over the centuries. It is hard to love one another. We often need to be reminded how.»
Trone Garriott is vying to unseat Rep. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa, for a «toss-up» congressional seat in the southwestern part of the state. Throughout the campaign, she has been criticized for expressing beliefs that Republicans have argued do not align with the Christian faith she represents.
«She’s made it clear that the values Iowa families live by every single day are the ones she’s running against,» Nunn previously told Fox News Digital.
At the 2023 love-themed storytelling event, Trone Garriott chose to spotlight her «first wedding» with the satanist pair.
She recounted that the couple had shown up under the mistaken belief they had to be married in a church and proceeded to interrogate their Christian beliefs.
«These people could barely stand us. They didn’t believe in or really have any respect for what mattered to us,» Trone Garriott said.
The senior pastor went ahead and married them anyway, with Trone Garriott reading the words, «Love is patient; love is kind» over them.
Though Trone Garriott expressed initial concern about the wedding, by the end of the ceremony she spoke tenderly about the man with a pentagram tattooed on his face.
«Was he getting teary?» Trone Garriott asked during her remarks. «They had a lot of baggage between the two of them, but there was no denying how they were looking at each other.»
At no point in her speech did Trone Garriott suggest that she or the senior pastor asked the couple to reject satanism.
«So what happened to that couple? I have no idea,» Trone Garriott reflected. «We never saw them again.»

Asked for comment, a spokesperson for Trone Garriott’s campaign told Fox News Digital, «As a minister in training, Sarah followed the direction of her supervising pastor and had no control over who walked through the church’s doors — it was her job to minister to everyone, including people she does not share beliefs with.
«Like so many Iowa Christians, Sarah’s faith calls her to love thy neighbor, and she follows Jesus’ example of embodying his grace for everyone,» the spokesperson added.
A source familiar with the campaign disputed that Trone Garriott helped marry the satanist couple, because she was not ordained until 2008.
But Trone Garriott’s own words and actions during the ceremony appeared to acknowledge her active role in the wedding.
«This was going to be my first wedding,» Trone Garriott reflected in her remarks.
The resurfaced video comes as Trone Garriott’s beliefs have been heavily scrutinized in the contest for the swing seat.
In a 2023 speech, she expressed discomfort with public displays of Christianity and defended seeking out non-Christian prayers at the statehouse as a member of the state Senate.
Trone Garriott wrote an op-ed in 2025 calling out Christian lawmakers who protested a Wiccan-led prayer, arguing, «Jesus engaged with pagans.»

The National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans’ campaign arm, sharply criticized Trone Garriott’s past in a statement to Fox News Digital.
«Her record shows a clear pattern of rhetoric and decisions that contradict her own faith, raising serious questions about her judgment and values,» NRCC spokeswoman Emily Tuttle said. «If she’s willing to blur those lines, Iowans can’t trust her to stand up for them.»

Terremoto y tsunami en Japón: reportan una suba del mar de 80 centímetros en el puerto de Kuji
Un terremoto de magnitud 7,4 sacudió este lunes el norte de Japón y llevó a la Agencia Meteorológica de Japón (JMA) a emitir una alerta de tsunami por olas de hasta tres metros, con una inmediata orden de evacuación para las zonas costeras y ribereñas.
El sismo se registró a las 16:53 hora local (07:53 GMT) en aguas del océano Pacífico, frente a la costa norte de la prefectura de Iwate, y el movimiento se sintió con intensidad suficiente como para hacer temblar grandes edificios en Tokio, ubicada a cientos de kilómetros del epicentro.
Aproximadamente 40 minutos después, una ola de tsunami de 80 centímetros (31 pulgadas) azotó un puerto en Kuji, en Iwate, según la JMA.
La Agencia Meteorológica ha emitido una alerta de tsunami para la prefectura de Iwate y partes de Hokkaido y Aomori. Se esperan tsunamis de hasta 3 metros de altura.

La agencia meteorológica también alertó sobre la persistencia del fenómeno y pidió a la población no regresar a las áreas evacuadas hasta nuevo aviso. “Se prevé que las olas del tsunami azoten la zona repetidamente. No abandonen las zonas seguras hasta que se levante la alerta”, señaló el mismo parte oficial.
En una conferencia de prensa, el gobierno pidió a la población “mantenerse a salvo”, y aseguró que se reunirá un comité de emergencia en las siguientes horas para evaluar los daños.
Las imágenes difundidas por la cadena nacional NHK no mostraron daños visibles inmediatos en los alrededores de varios puertos de Iwate durante los primeros minutos posteriores al sismo. Sin embargo, las autoridades mantuvieron la máxima precaución debido al riesgo asociado al posible ingreso de olas de gran altura en la franja costera.
Ante la magnitud del evento, la oficina de la primera ministra anunció la conformación de un equipo de gestión de crisis para monitorear la evolución de la situación y coordinar la respuesta estatal. La primera ministra Sanae Takaichi se dirigió a la población y reiteró el llamado a evacuar. “Para aquellos de ustedes que viven en áreas para las que se han emitido advertencias, por favor evacúen a lugares más altos y seguros, como terrenos elevados”, expresó ante la prensa.
La jefa de gobierno también informó que las autoridades trabajaban para confirmar si el terremoto dejó víctimas o daños materiales, aunque en las primeras horas no trascendieron reportes oficiales sobre muertos o heridos.
Japón es uno de los países con mayor actividad sísmica del planeta debido a su ubicación sobre cuatro importantes placas tectónicas, en el borde occidental del llamado Anillo de Fuego del Pacífico, una de las zonas geológicas más activas del mundo. El país registra habitualmente alrededor de 1.500 temblores al año, lo que representa cerca del 18 por ciento de los terremotos globales.
Aunque la mayoría de esos movimientos son de baja intensidad, el impacto de cada evento depende de factores como la profundidad del sismo y su cercanía a zonas densamente pobladas. En este caso, el epicentro frente a la costa de Iwate reavivó el recuerdo del devastador terremoto y tsunami de 2011.
Aquel 11 de marzo, un terremoto submarino de magnitud 9,0 sacudió la misma región y desencadenó un tsunami que dejó alrededor de 18.500 muertos y desaparecidos, además de provocar la crisis nuclear en la central de Fukushima, uno de los peores desastres atómicos de la historia.
La amenaza sísmica también se mantiene sobre la Fosa de Nankai, una extensa depresión submarina de unos 800 kilómetros donde la placa del Mar de Filipinas se desliza por debajo de la placa continental sobre la que se asienta Japón. En 2024, la JMA emitió por primera vez una advertencia especial por riesgo de “megaterremoto” en esa zona.
Según estimaciones oficiales del gobierno japonés, un eventual sismo de gran magnitud en la Fosa de Nankai, acompañado por un tsunami, podría causar hasta 298.000 muertes y daños económicos por unos 2 billones de dólares.
La preocupación volvió a crecer en diciembre de 2025, cuando la agencia emitió una segunda alerta de “megaterremoto” luego de un temblor de magnitud 7,5 en la costa norte. Ese episodio provocó olas de hasta 70 centímetros y dejó más de 40 heridos, aunque no se reportaron daños de gran magnitud.
Han pasado 15 años desde que un terremoto de magnitud 9,0 y un tsunami el 11 de marzo de 2011 devastaron partes del norte de Japón, causaron más de 22.000 muertes y obligaron a casi medio millón de personas a huir de sus hogares, la mayoría de ellas debido a los daños del tsunami.
Unas 160.000 personas huyeron de sus hogares en Fukushima debido a la radiación expulsada por la central nuclear Fukushima Daiichi, golpeada por el tsunami. Unas 26.000 de ellas no han regresado porque se reasentaron en otros lugares, sus ciudades natales siguen siendo zonas restringidas o tienen preocupaciones persistentes sobre la radiación.
