Mexico pyramid shooter who took hostages and killed 1 is identified

A gunman who fatally shot a Canadian tourist and wounded more than a dozen others atop a historic pyramid in Mexico on Monday has been identified, according to officials.
Authorities identified the gunman as 27-year-old Julio Cesar Jasso, a Mexican national, according to a state official who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
Jasso later died by suicide after turning the gun on himself, and security officials found a gun, a knife and ammunition. Authorities said he acted alone, with the State of Mexico government confirming he was the sole assailant on Monday night.
Officials said seven of the victims were struck by gunfire, while others were hurt in the chaos as people scrambled to get down from the pyramids, with some falling during the panic.

Those hospitalized included tourists from several countries, among them the United States, Colombia, Russia, Brazil and Canada, authorities said. The victims ranged in age from 6 to 61.
Footage circulating in local media appears to show the suspect positioned atop the structure as visitors rushed for safety below, with gunfire echoing across the site.

The Teotihuacan complex, located just outside Mexico City, is one of the country’s most visited archaeological landmarks, drawing millions of international visitors each year to its towering pre-Hispanic structures.

The shooting took place shortly after 11:30 a.m. when dozens of tourists were at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon.
Security measures at the site have changed in recent years, with routine entry screenings no longer consistently in place, according to a local guide.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote on social media that the shooting would be investigated and that she was in touch with the Canadian Embassy.

Anita Anand, Canada’s foreign affairs minister, said on X that as a «result of a horrific act of gun violence, a Canadian was killed and another wounded in Teotihuacán» and that her «thoughts are with their family and loved ones.»

Later in the evening, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson also expressed «deep concern» and sadness over the deaths and numerous injuries, and said in a post on X that the U.S. is «ready to provide support as needed while Mexican authorities continue their investigation.»

The National Institute of Anthropology and History said in a statement that the Teotihuacán archaeological site will remain closed until further notice.

Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz’s viral jab at President Donald Trump over the troubled Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool cleanup drew swift blowback from critics online, who pointed to the massive fraud scandal that unfolded in Minnesota under Walz’s watch.
«Found an imaginary problem, said only they could fix it, didn’t listen to experts, hired buddies who grifted millions, failed miserably, bragged how great it went,» Walz wrote on Friday in a post on X with over 3.5 million views. «The entire Trump presidency in a nutshell.»
Walz was reacting to a news report about the issues the Trump administration has had cleaning up the historic reflecting pool next to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., which has recently become fodder for Democrats in response to peeling paint and algae growth just weeks after a $14.8 million restoration project was completed.
Walz’s post, which was received well by some of his supporters, was widely criticized by conservatives, who suggested that Walz’s inability to stop the scammers involved in the massive fraud scandal that unfolded under his watch makes his opinion on the Reflecting Pool less convincing.

A gunman was «neutralized» Monday following a shooting in Montreal that left one police officer and one other person dead.
Authorities told Fox News that the shooting happened in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of the city.

At a news conference, Montreal police (Service de police de la Ville de Montréal) Chief Fady Dagher said officers were called to the Hilton Garden Inn where someone opened fire on them, he said.
A male officer and a civilian died, he said. A female officer was injured and taken to a hospital in critical condition but was upgraded to stable condition.
«It’s a tragedy. It’s a nightmare,» Dagher said.
The weapon used in the shooting was recovered, the chief said.
In an alert, issued around 12:30 p.m., authorities advised people in the Côte-des-Neiges area to shelter indoors because of an «armed and dangerous suspect» in the neighborhood.
«If you are in the affected area, shelter indoors, lock the doors, stay away from windows and follow instructions of local authorities,» the alert stated.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada reacted to the shooting online.

«My deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty in Côte-des-Neiges,» she wrote. «My thoughts are also with all those affected by this tragedy. We are closely following the evolution of the situation and ask the public to respect the instructions of the SPVM.»
In a post on X, Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said she was «deeply shaken» by the shooting and that the provincial government would offer its full co-operation to the relevant authorities.
«Such acts have no place here. We are monitoring the situation closely,» Fréchette said.
Details about the alleged gunman or what led to the shooting have not been disclosed.
It has been 24 years since the last (SPVM) officer was killed in the line of duty, Dagher said.
Brandon Elkaim, who lives near where the shooting happened, said he was shocked to learn of the violence in the area.

«It was about 10 or 12, what we now know, were shots in a row,» he told CTV News. «About 10 minutes went by of quiet but in that time, we saw the park completely empty out, parents and kids running in a panic.»
As of Monday afternoon, there was no immediate threat to the public, authorities said.
