Secret Service missed ‘multiple opportunities’ to prevent Trump assassination attempt: watchdog

The U.S. Secret Service «missed multiple opportunities» to prevent or disrupt the July 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump as he spoke to supporters during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General said in a report released Thursday.
The 64-page document detailed several lapses in security that allowed Thomas Matthew Crooks to get a line of sight of Trump as he stood on stage in Butler, Pennsylvania, during the July 13, 2024, event.
«The Secret Service’s overall lack of policy and processes coupled with limited intelligence sharing and poor collaboration and communication with protectee staff and state and local law enforcement set the conditions that led to missing opportunities to prevent and detect the attempted assassination,» the report states.
Among the OIG’s findings was a failure to warn Trump’s protective detail that Crooks had a range finder and a long gun and had climbed onto the roof of a nearby building due to a lack of communication between the Secret Service and local law enforcement.

Instead, they operated out of separate locations 257 yards apart with intermittent and highly limited radio connectivity between them.
As a result, the Secret Service missed 102 radio transmissions regarding an increasingly intense search for a suspicious individual, including alerts that the suspect was on the roof with a long gun.

Because the Secret Service communications room only received a handful of phone calls and texts, agents failed to recognize the urgency of the threat and never warned Trump’s protective detail to delay the speech or remove him from the stage, the OIG said.
«Communications was a problem because of inoperability. There were too many command posts,» Paul Eckloff, a former Secret Service agent, told Fox News Digital. «The biggest failure that is probably not addressed in the OIG report is that they never should have accepted the risk of doing it at this site. It never should have been done. That roof had an egregious line of site.»

Crooks was able to fire eight shots. Trump was grazed in the ear, and Corey Comperatore, 50, who was attending the rally, was killed. Two other spectators were critically injured but survived.
Moments after Trump was shot, Secret Service agents rushed the stage and moved him to safety.
In addition to a lack of communication, the Secret Service failed to detect Crooks’ drone flight that he used to view the campaign event stage less than three hours before the rally due to an under-trained operator and an equipment malfunction, the report states.
Crooks flew the drone undetected for almost nine minutes and flew 471 yards from the event stage at an altitude of 102 feet. During the rally, the Secret Service had a counter-drone system on site, but it malfunctioned.
The counter-drone system was not operational when Crooks flew his drone hours before he tried to kill Trump.

The agency also failed to share intelligence about a long-distance threat to Trump with the Pittsburgh field office and agents on site, the report said.
Agents also failed to secure the area outside the security perimeter and did not use available resources to block Crooks’ line of sight from the roof of the American Glass Research International building to Trump despite the line of sight being identified as a concern, the OIG said.
Despite identifying the AGR complex as a line-of-sight vulnerability during advanced walkthroughs, the Secret Service failed to ensure the view to the stage was obstructed.
«There should have been a better advance, more officers, more agents, but there’s simply a limit to that,» Eckloff said.
Officials originally proposed using trucks already onsite to block the view from the AGR complex, but Trump’s campaign staff rejected the idea because it would interfere with press photographs.

An agent proposed a secondary location for the trucks but never verified that the campaign staff actually moved the equipment. As a result, Crooks had an unobstructed view of Trump’s podium from a distance of just 155 yards, the report said.

The report offered several recommendations to improve the Secret Service’s processes for securing events, such as mandatory threat communication, enhanced counter-drone training and a process to formally document the identification and blocking of line-of-sight vulnerabilities.

«You deserve to make sure that your international comrades are actually working with you and getting the benefits that you that you all deserve,» said Democratic New York House nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier at a union rally in New York City.
«Half of the people here are strangers to you all. But now you have comrades,» said Colorado Democratic Congressional nominee Melat Kiros who defeated Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) Tuesday.
«I’ve got to give a shout out to my comrades,» said Missouri Democratic Congressional candidate Hartzell Gray on a podcast interview.
To Democratic Socialists, you don’t know how lucky you are.
«You have the solidarity of the entire labor movement. And you have my solidarity, too,» said Democratic New York House nominee Claire Valdez.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) didn’t endorse either Avila Chevalier nor Valdez. However, he did congratulate them. Jeffries naturally needs Avila Chavalier, Valdez and Democratic New York House nominee Brad Lander to win. They probably will this fall. But when asked about progressives who prevailed in the New York primary – who he didn’t endorse – Jeffries delivered a nuanced answer.
«I will support every single Democratic incumbent in the New York Congressional delegation and beyond,» said Jeffries.
CNN resuscitated a set of old tweets from Avila Chevalier. Some praised communism. Others called for more Marxist literature in libraries. Yours truly pressed Jeffries about whether he should call out Avila Chevalier for some of her old social media postings.
«Should she apologize or clarify some of these very inflammatory tweets that she sent?» I queried.
«That’s a question you’re going to have to ask her,» answered Jeffries.
«But as Leader, is that a problem?» I followed up.
«I’ve spoken to this issue. I’ve expressed my position as it relates to many of the things that she has said in the past over Twitter. my statement speaks for itself,» answered Jeffries.
Then the 29-year-old Melat Kiros whipped 29-year House veteran Diana DeGette in Colorado. Kiros’s victory demonstrated that the Democratic Socialist message didn’t just resonate in the urban canyons of lower Manhattan. But in the Rocky Mountains, too.
«What we are fighting for is Medicare for all. Universal child care. Abolishing ICE. And ending the genocide in Gaza,» said Kiros.
These are core subjects for the left.
«They’re winning on platforms like Medicare for all. Universal health care. Universal childcare. Raising the minimum wage,» said Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA). «These ideas, whether you call it socialism or not, they are very popular across the country.»
Progressive influencer Hasan Piker believes victories by these candidates in New York and Colorado are just the beginning.
«Progressive politics, left populism. It can work in every district in every state. That’s why I kept saying over and over again, it’s coming to a city near you,» said Piker.
But not everyone is on board.
«Will Democrats continue to defend crazypants?» asked Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) on Fox.
Rep. Greg Landsman (D-OH) is another. He’s a moderate, pro-Israel Democrat in a battleground district in which President Trump carried in 2024.

«My folks want really normal folks. Democrats, Republicans, just people who are going to get things done. And so they see this because this is what gets attention,» said Landsman. «I hope the party doesn’t go in that direction. Having a diversity of opinions is one thing. But some of what some of them think is beyond the pale. It’s just outrageous.»
Landsman wished Democratic leaders would speak out against controversial candidates and nominees.
«The fact that they won’t even call it out, I think is an underlying current within the Democrat Party that they’re scared of their own base,» said Rep. Russell Fry (R-SC).
Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) is retiring after 32 years in Congress. She’s not aligned with her likely successor, Claire Valdez.
«So what do you make of some of the controversy about your prospective successor? And is that driving a wedge through the party?» yours truly asked Velazquez.
«Look, we are celebrating the outcome of this Supreme Court decision that reaffirm the fundamental principle of the Constitution that anyone born in this country is an American citizen,» answered Velazquez, trying to change the subject.
«But do you have but did you not see things eye to eye with your prospective successor here?» I followed up.
Velazquez sighed.
«Look, she won and I wish her well. And I offered myself to sit down with her and discuss the transition. But this is how democracy works,» said Velazquez.
Still, other Democrats believe the party can operate under a «big tent» and court voters.
«There’s room for conversations about where we go. But we’re not the party of one person or coalition and there’s going to be those discussions about where we move forward,» said Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL).
Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) asserted that wins by Democratic Socialists in New York City carried outsized weight. She also said that it was natural for the press corps to capitalize on possible divisions in the party.
«I think that you all try to stir it up. Stir up this language. Try to pit people against each other,» said Dingell.
I asked Dingell about «controversial things» which Avila Chevalier peddled over the years.
«I don’t have to agree with everything that she said. The Republicans are putting kerosene on the fire,» said Dingell.
«Didn’t she pour kerosene on it to start with?» I asked.
«Look, I wouldn’t have said some of the things that she said. But I don’t vote in New York. They do,» answered Dingell.

Republicans are adamantly opposed to socialism. But in a weird way, the Democratic lurch left might actually help the GOP beat the historic odds and hold the House.
«They’re a complete socialist party now,» said Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC). «They’ve got to either own it or disassociate themselves from it.»

Europa pena para que su mercado no quede aplastado bajo las importaciones baratas de productos chinos, desde autos eléctricos hasta la última remera trucha de algún futbolista famoso. Mientras entre los dirigentes se negocia para no llegar a las manos en una guerra comercial que dañaría tanto a China como a Europa, las instituciones europeas siguen tomando decisiones prácticas para proteger su mercado.
Este miércoles 1 de julio entró en vigor lo que en Europa se llama coloquialmente como “tasa Shein” (por el nombre de la empresa china de e-commerce). Se trata de imponer un arancel de tres euros por producto a los pequeños paquetes de terceros países que entren en el mercado europeo. Hasta ahora estaban libres de pagar cualquier tasa los que no alcanzaran un valor de 150 euros. La medida no está diseñada contra ningún país en concreto, pero en la práctica está hecha especialmente para China y sus plataformas de comercio online como Shein, Temu o AliExpress.
La medida entra en vigor justo dos días después de una reunión de alto nivel entre funcionarios europeos y chinos que se dieron de plazo hasta octubre para implantar medidas de transparencia que eviten el estallido de una guerra comercial. La idea de la Comisión Europea, que tiene el mandato de los líderes de los 27 para endurecer la relación comercial con China, es que se puede dialogar y llegar a acuerdos mientras se toman medidas de protección del mercado europeo, aunque Beijing las considere medidas proteccionistas.
El mecanismo es temporal. Cada artículo que entre en el mercado europeo pagará una tasa de tres euros, pero esto debería decaer en un plazo de dos años, cuando se prevé que esté preparado un mecanismo informático que calculará automáticamente cuánto debe pagar cada producto. Y no se pagan tres euros por paquete, sino por cada producto dentro de un paquete. Si en una caja vienen dos remeras, cada una pagará tres euros.
La Comisión Europea explica desde hace semanas que la prioridad no es recaudar, sino reducir las importaciones de productos baratos chinos, aunque la Comisión no señala en público a China. Bruselas estima que la libertad de pasar por aduanas sin apenas controles ni pago de tasas para los paquetes valorados en menos de 150 euros permite desde hace años la entrada masiva en el mercado europeo de productos truchos, que violan normas de propiedad intelectual o que no cumplen estándares de seguridad.
Así, compiten con los productores europeos con ventaja, pues estos pasan una serie de controles de calidad que Bruselas estima que en China o no se pasan o son menos estrictos. La imposibilidad de controlar uno por uno cada paquete hacen que la inmensa mayoría entre en el mercado europeo.
La Comisión Europea considera también que el sistema actual pone en desventaja competitiva a los vendedores europeos y es injusto porque les obliga a pagar unas tasas que sus rivales chinos no pagan. Los europeos importan mercancías al por mayor y por lo tanto pagan las tasas correspondientes mientras las tiendas de comercio online chinas inundan el mercado europeo con productos baratos enviados de uno en uno, por debajo de 150 euros y sin pagar tasa alguna en aduana. También se trata de evitar que se infravaloren los productos que entran en Europa para evitar esa tasa que pagaban los que valían más de 150 euros, porque ahora todos pagarán algo, aunque sean tres euros.
Para noviembre Bruselas espera poner en marcha una “tasa de gestión”. No gravaría el producto que entra en el mercado europeo, sino que serviría para pagar a las administraciones aduaneras por la carga de trabajo que supone gestionar millones de pequeños envíos a diario.
El crecimiento de este tipo de comercio ha llegado a ser un problema serio para las aduanas. La Comisión Europea calcula que cada año entran en la UE casi 6.000 millones de envíos baratos (casi 14 por cada residente en la UE), equivalente a 16 millones de paquetes cada día. Ese volumen se duplica cada año y estos paquetes baratos son ya el 97% del total de importaciones europeas calculado en número de bultos, pero sólo el 2% del valor importado. China está en el origen del 91% de esos paquetes pequeños que llegan a Europa.
Estados Unidos aplica desde el pasado verano su propia tasa similar después de años de no hacer pagar nada a los paquetes valorados en menos de 800 dólares.
Bruselas calcula que en la Unión Europea hay unas 30 millones de personas que trabajan en el comercio minorista y cuyos puestos de trabajo estaban en riesgo por la competencia de productos chinos baratos.
La Comisión Europea cree que China reaccionará de dos maneras. Imponiendo algún tipo de retorsión comercial y canalizando sus exportaciones a Europa a través de importadores locales.

Russia launched one of its heaviest overnight attacks on Kyiv, firing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at the Ukrainian capital in a strike that tore through residential buildings, killed at least 18 people and wounded more than 90, according to Reuters.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Andrii Melnyk, speaking from Ukraine exclusively with Fox News Digital, said the assault marked «the most horrific night for Kyiv since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion.»
«Early this morning, I spoke with my mother-in-law, who is in Kyiv. She told me she had never been so terrified. It felt as if the biblical Apocalypse were unfolding before her very eyes. Everyone was praying.»

The explosions shook central Kyiv for hours as thousands of residents rushed into bomb shelters and underground metro stations. The attack caused the widest destruction in Kyiv so far in 2026 and was the deadliest strike on the capital since at least May, when 24 people were killed in an attack that brought down an apartment block.
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 74 missiles and 496 drones overnight, according to Reuters.
Yuri Ihnat, the Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson, said the number of ballistic missiles was unusually high and that the interception rate for them was low, as Ukraine continues to face shortages of Patriot missiles.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who cut short a visit to Ireland and returned to Ukraine, said damage had been reported at more than 20 sites across the capital.
«The main strike was directed at Kyiv,» Zelenskyy said. «Air defence supplies for Ukraine are an absolute and critical priority.»

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared Friday a day of mourning and said damage had been recorded across the city of roughly 3 million people.
Melnyk told Fox News Digital the attack should force the international community to confront Russia’s status inside the U.N. Security Council.
«And yet, this barbaric Russia continues to be treated at the U.N. as a normal member state,» he said. «It is time to end this parallel reality. Russia’s status as a permanent member of the Security Council should finally be called into question. Russia should be treated for what it has become: a pariah state.»
Emergency crews searched through the rubble of a nine-story building on the left bank of the Dnipro River as fires continued to burn after sunrise. City officials said some people remained trapped inside damaged residential buildings.
East2West footage showed the overnight barrage from inside Kyiv, including a baby sleeping as explosions flashed outside an open window and smoke from an earlier strike rose nearby. Other footage showed residents sheltering near a metro station as strikes hit the capital, as well as heavy damage across Kyiv, including residential buildings torn apart and thick smoke hanging over parts of the city.
More than 20 sites were damaged, including residential buildings, diplomatic accommodation and the National Institute of Biochemistry, where a state-of-the-art laboratory and offices were gutted.

Katarina Mathernova, the European Union’s ambassador to Ukraine, said Russia «unleashed hell on Kyiv» overnight and struck accommodation used by diplomatic personnel. Diplomats were not injured, but their belongings were damaged in a fire that engulfed the building, she said.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a Telegram post that its «massive attack» used long-range, high-precision weapons and drones to strike military and energy facilities, as well as airports in Kyiv and other locations. Moscow said the attack was retaliation for Ukrainian drone strikes on Russia.
Ukraine said it hit an oil refinery overnight in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, where the regional governor reported one person killed in a strike on an industrial facility.
The Kremlin said Russian military commanders briefed Russian President Vladimir Putin on the attacks and said Moscow would continue increasing pressure on Ukraine to achieve its war aims.
Poland, a NATO and European Union member that borders Ukraine, briefly scrambled fighter jets as a preventive measure. Finland also briefly issued a temporary aviation restriction zone in the eastern Gulf of Finland, its defense forces said.
Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu told Fox News Digital that Russian drones were detected in Ukraine roughly 30 kilometers from Romania’s border Wednesday, prompting NATO air-policing aircraft to respond.
«Two Royal Air Force Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft deployed under the Enhanced Air Policing mission and operating from the 86th Air Base in Fetești in Romania, were scrambled to monitor the Romanian airspace situation near the border with Ukraine,» Țoiu said. «A Romanian Air Force IAR 330 Puma helicopter was also deployed. Such incidents have constantly accompanied Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine.»
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Thursday that she would propose new sanctions on entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex in response to the strikes.
«The more Moscow attacks civilians, the more sanctions must be imposed,» Kallas said in a post on X.
