Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei struck again, this time in a fiery speech to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling the body «useless» and made up of «fatally arrogant parasites.»

Milei began by commending the U.N.’s founding mission of resolving conflict peacefully and promoting universal freedom and dignity as «noble words.» However, he went on to say that «today, regrettably, it is time to acknowledge that, in practice, that sacred covenant has been broken.»

«That’s to say, it has become a useless organization whose only purpose is to sustain a caste of fatally arrogant parasites masquerading as well-intentioned bureaucrats,» he charged.

To make his case, he pointed to the U.N.’s role in restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he called a type of «genocide,» and the «gender agenda, environmental extremism and unchecked immigration.»

Milei said, «During the pandemic, bodies under the auspices of this house put themselves before scientific evidence and the sovereignty of nations and promoted forced lockdown policies throughout the world.

«Where some allege a public health policy error, we see a global experiment in social control disguised as science. And when a state wearing public health blinkers deprives its population of the right to work, to receive an education and to bid farewell to their dead, this results in millions of avoidable deaths; there is a word for it, genocide.»

He charged that «every time [the U.N.] failed, rather than reviewing the model or apologizing, they doubled down.»

«Those who were supposed to guarantee collective security and human rights failed in their task. They allowed chaos, violence and international terrorism to flourish,» he said.

«The alleged defenders of human rights have sheltered bloodthirsty dictatorships and regimes that stone women in the streets; they have systematically voted against Israel while remaining silent in the face of Islamic terrorism and the genocide of Christians in Africa.»

Milei is widely considered a radical reformer, budget slasher and an ally of President Donald Trump. Similar to Trump’s previous criticisms of the U.N. before the assembly, Milei did not hold back in his address Wednesday.

Turning to his own country’s grievances, Milei continued by saying, «And if that were not enough, an organization established to defend the territorial sovereignty of its members decided to look the other way with regard to the situation of the Malvinas [Falkland] Islands, South Georgia Islands, South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas.»

He said these islands «are a test of the gulf that exists between the words of international institutions and the reality upon which they purport to act.»

«There’s no shortage of words or resolutions; what is lacking is consequences,» he asserted. «Because an institution that cannot ensure that its words carry weight in the real world loses the most important thing of all, its authority.»

Milei said that, in addition to what he described as the Falkland Islands «failure,» the U.N. has «built a bureaucratic leviathan devoted to deciding how the peoples of the world and their citizens should live.»

«This amounts to a curious mixture of anarchy and tyranny, impotence in the face of those who break the most basic rules, such as bloodthirsty dictatorships and terrorist organizations coupled with Orwellian control and impositions on liberal democracies that abide by the rules.»

Referencing free-market economist and philosopher Ludwig von Mises, Milei said, «I would remind them of what Mises said, ‘Good people do not think about controlling the lives of their fellow human beings.’»

After posting an explicit warning that MAGA supporters, conservatives and apolitical applicants need not apply, a New York City kitten rescue is defending its screening process against mounting criticism, including from PETA, which called on the group to scrap the ideological ban.

«Homeless animals don’t care which side of abortion you are on or whether you believe in global warming or support Palestine or Israel or if you don’t vote at all, ever. They care if you love them and will give them a good home,» PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk told Digital.

«We hope this policy, which is humancentric, is reconsidered and abolished.»

The dispute centers on Itty Bitty City Kitties, a Rockaway Beach-based rescue that describes itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit specializing in orphaned and neonatal kittens, feral cat welfare and adoptions. The organization is also listed among New York state’s registered pet rescues.

In a social media post reviewed by Digital, the rescue laid out a series of political positions it said could disqualify prospective adopters.

«MAGA? Nope.»

«Conservative? Nope.»

«‘I’m not political’? Nice loophole. Still nope.»

An accompanying image of a kitten bore the message, «NO. F—ING. MAGA.»

The post drew wider attention after Libs of TikTok posted it on X, prompting questions about whether the language represented the rescue’s actual adoption practices.

Digital contacted Itty Bitty City Kitties and asked whether an applicant could be rejected for identifying as MAGA, conservative or apolitical.

Samantha Knox, who has publicly identified herself as the director of Itty Bitty City Kitties, defended the organization’s screening approach by saying its overriding responsibility is the welfare of the animals in its care.

«As an animal welfare rescue, our primary responsibility is ensuring the animals in our care go to safe, compassionate homes,» Knox told Digital.

She said the organization considers «public conduct and demonstrated values» and argued that a record of «celebrat[ing] cruelty» can raise concerns about an applicant’s suitability to care for an animal.

«A history of celebrating harm or abuse, be it toward people or animals, is one of the biggest red flags in animal rescue,» Knox said. «We stand by our mission and will never place a vulnerable animal with anyone, ever, who we feel is a danger to the welfare of the animal.»

Digital followed up with a narrower question, asking whether a person who identifies as MAGA or conservative, but has no documented history of animal cruelty, threats, neglect or violence, would be eligible to adopt.

«Itty Bitty City Kitties does not screen or reject applicants based on registered political party affiliation,» Knox responded. «MAGA is a political movement and ideology, not a recognized political party.»

Knox said adoption evaluations instead concern «conduct, ethical alignment and animal safety.»

«We reserve the right to reject any application where an applicant’s expressed values, public statements or actions demonstrate a failure to meet our safety and welfare standards,» she said.

Asked again whether a MAGA or conservative applicant without a history of cruelty, threats, neglect or violence could adopt from the organization, Knox did not provide a yes-or-no answer.

«Media-driven requests to force complex animal welfare evaluations into a binary ‘yes or no’ premise fundamentally misrepresent how responsible adoption screenings operate,» she said.

Knox added that «active support for or alignment with social movements» the rescue believes normalizes or promotes cruelty can be treated as «actionable conduct» and said adoption decisions are made «holistically under these welfare and safety standards.»

Knox also provided Digital with screenshots she said showed explicit, hostile messages directed at the rescue after its political posts.

Knox said messages of that nature illustrated the kind of conduct the rescue considers relevant when evaluating prospective homes. PETA, however, drew a different line.

«Political affiliation is not a reliable measure of whether someone will be a good guardian,» the organization told Digital, adding that a person’s actions and statements, along with demonstrated treatment of people and animals, can be relevant to an adoption decision.

PETA said rescues should focus on «objective animal welfare factors,» including an applicant’s history of animal care, ability to meet an animal’s needs and evidence of cruelty, neglect or violence. 

«Shelters and rescues exist to protect animals, not to serve as political gatekeepers,» PETA said.

Itty Bitty City Kitties’ public adoption page describes what the organization calls a «Fully Supported Adoption Model,» under which prospective owners submit an application, references, employment and living information, participate in a phone interview and complete a FaceTime or Zoom interview in lieu of a home visit.

The rescue’s published «MUST LIST» says adopters must keep animals up to date on veterinary care; keep them indoors or leashed outside; never declaw them; maintain a plan for travel, illness or death; not simply give away an animal they can no longer care for; and be financially able to provide for its welfare.

The public-facing requirements reviewed by Digital do not mention MAGA, conservatism, political affiliation or political ideology.

The organization has also used its social media account for other political messaging.

On Sept. 10, Itty Bitty City Kitties posted an image of a kitten carrying the words, «Kittens. Don’t. Mourn. Nazis.»

«For absolutely no reason at all on this day one year later…» text on the image stated. 

«Just a little kitten making sure we all know where we stand,» the accompanying caption read, followed by hashtags including «#kitten,» «#cat,» «#politics» and «#iykyk.»

While the post did not name late conservative activist Charlie Kirk, it was published exactly one year after his assassination at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10, 2025.

Knox also invoked the rescue’s nonprofit status in defending its ability to take positions on political and social issues, saying 501(c)(3) organizations are permitted to maintain issue-based standards aligned with their missions as long as they do not engage in partisan political campaigning.

PETA, while objecting to the use of political affiliation as a measure of adoption suitability, said an applicant’s actual behavior toward animals can, and should, matter regardless of ideology.

«More broadly, anyone who condones, celebrates or participates in harming animals demonstrates a troubling lack of empathy,» PETA said.

El Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología e Hidrología (Insivumeh) lanzó en el departamento de Jutiapa, el programa Clínicas del Clima, una iniciativa para adaptar la información científica a las necesidades de los municipios afectados por la sequía y preparar a sus comunidades ante períodos de menor lluvia y temperaturas más altas previstos hacia 2027.

Cuatro municipios jutiapanecos —Agua Blanca, Asunción Mita, Atescatempa y Santa Catarina Mita— permanecen bajo alerta roja por la sequía. Forman parte de los 15 municipios de la Región Trifinio alcanzados por ese nivel de alerta ante el evento agroclimático.

El programa fue presentado bajo el lema “La ciencia al servicio del campo” y está dirigido a productores agrícolas y ganaderos, autoridades locales, instituciones gubernamentales, universidades, empresas y familias de la región.

Su implementación será gradual en los departamentos que presenten condiciones de alerta, en especial aquellos que puedan pasar de alerta anaranjada a roja.

Jutiapa, el primer territorio de las Clínicas del Clima

La iniciativa se organiza en tres etapas: diagnóstico, laboratorio, y análisis y resultados. El propósito es identificar las demandas de cada territorio, desarrollar productos climáticos específicos y entregarlos a quienes deben tomar decisiones frente a las amenazas naturales.

El director general del Insivumeh, Edwin Rojas, explicó que los departamentos no enfrentan los mismos riesgos ni necesitan los mismos datos. La propuesta apunta a reemplazar la información general por instrumentos ajustados a las condiciones de cada región.

“Insivumeh viene al departamento de Jutiapa para diseñar herramientas que permitan afrontar las condiciones de clima que vienen y también poder diseñar estrategias que permitan, a largo plazo, colaborar con el desarrollo de los diferentes sectores”, afirmó Rojas durante la presentación.

La elección de Jutiapa respondió al incremento de su nivel de alerta dentro del sistema escalonado de la Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres, CONRED. El departamento pasó de una advertencia anaranjada a una roja por los efectos de la falta de precipitaciones.

Los equipos técnicos de Geofísica, Hidrología y Meteorología presentaron los productos que ya dispone la institución: el bot Nubis, sistemas de alerta temprana para inundaciones, monitoreo sísmico y volcánico, pronósticos meteorológicos y vigilancia de deslizamientos. Cada recurso podrá adaptarse a las características de los municipios jutiapanecos.

Pozos, calidad del aire y estaciones meteorológicas

Las primeras jornadas de trabajo reunieron a representantes de asociaciones ganaderas, productores, autoridades municipales, equipos técnicos, entidades gubernamentales y universidades. La actividad incluyó tres mesas dedicadas a hidrología, meteorología y sistemas de alerta.

El monitoreo de pozos de agua subterránea fue una de las principales necesidades planteadas ante la escasez de lluvias. Los participantes también solicitaron reforzar el análisis de la calidad del aire por los incendios forestales y los basureros, además de vigilar la calidad del agua en ríos y pozos.

La instalación de estaciones meteorológicas en puntos estratégicos de Jutiapa surgió como otra demanda para obtener registros más precisos sobre las condiciones locales. También se propuso agilizar la difusión de los pronósticos y avisos mediante la radio, para facilitar el acceso de las comunidades a esa información.

En la mesa de geofísica se trataron las amenazas de sismos, volcanes, deslizamientos y tsunamis. Los asistentes manifestaron interés en conocer con mayor detalle el riesgo sísmico del departamento y en utilizar aplicaciones de alerta de terremotos.

El subdirector del Insivumeh, Mario Mejía, señaló que la metodología se basa en un diálogo entre especialistas en hidrología, geología, agronomía, meteorología y sismología con la población. A partir de esos intercambios, los equipos científicos elaborarán recursos que luego presentarán a las autoridades y responsables de la gestión local.

“Construir participativamente esas herramientas basadas en las necesidades de la población” permitirá dar una atención temprana ante los fenómenos climáticos que atraviesa la región suroriental, indicó Mejía.

Los especialistas realizarán además visitas de campo para instalar equipos que fortalezcan el monitoreo y los sistemas de alerta temprana en el departamento. Estas acciones buscarán mejorar la respuesta ante eventos que puedan afectar la actividad agropecuaria y a las familias guatemaltecas.
