Dem civil war hits primary debate stage as El-Sayed and Stevens clash: ‘What are you hiding?’

The high-stakes fight between the left-wing and the center-left establishment for the future of the Democratic Party took center stage Tuesday in battleground Michigan.
That’s where moderate Rep. Haley Stevens, who is backed by Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and the party establishment, faced off in a fiery Senate nomination debate against former Wayne County Health Department Director Abdul El-Sayed, a far-left candidate endorsed by progressive champions Sen. Bernie Sanders I-Vt., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.
The sharpest exchanges centered on campaign money, outside spending and U.S. policy toward Israel, with El-Sayed repeatedly accusing Stevens of benefiting from millions of dollars in outside spending from pro-Israel and corporate-aligned groups.
«If you want your politics dictated by AIPAC or Chuck Schumer, then I’m not your guy,» El-Sayed said, arguing the Democratic Party would not change if it continued to elect leaders who take money from corporations. Stevens countered by accusing El-Sayed of benefiting from Republican efforts to boost him in the primary. «What my opponent needs to answer is, why is the GOP spending thousands of dollars to prop up his campaign, saying that he will make Mike Rogers the next U.S. senator?» Stevens said.

The showdown came four weeks before Michigan’s primary, with the winner taking on former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers, who is on a glide path to the GOP nomination, in the crucial midterm battle to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters.
The rare open Senate seat is a top Republican target and is a must-hold for the Democrats as they aim to win back the Senate majority from the GOP, which currently controls the chamber with a slim 53-47 margin.
The anti-establishment El-Sayed, who has been sharply critical of Israel, blamed AIPAC’s influence in American politics and accused politicians, like Stevens, of being «bought off by AIPAC» on Tuesday night. «So long as our politicians continue to be bought off by AIPAC do not be surprised when we fight wars that are in their best interest,» El-Sayed said.

Stevens, meanwhile, sought to flip El-Sayed’s attacks over outside spending back onto him, pressing the progressive candidate to release his tax returns and accusing him of being less than transparent about who was funding his own campaign and career.
«Well, look, transparency is also important, and this is why I have released my tax returns. My opponent, Abdul, he said that transparency is key, but yet he hasn’t released his tax returns,» Stevens said. «Abdoul, you talk about getting money out of politics and putting money in people’s pockets. But who is putting money in yours? What are you hiding?
Stevens, who agreed with El-Sayed on an immediate end to U.S. involvement in Iran, also drew a contrast between herself and her opponent by emphasizing her support for a two-state solution.
«The difference between my opponent and myself on this issue is that I believe in a two-state solution,» Stevens said. «I can say that Israel has a right to peacefully exist alongside the people of Palestine and in Gaza.»

Immigration enforcement also became a flashpoint during the debate, with El-Sayed saying ICE needed to be abolished and accusing Stevens of shifting her tone to be more aggressive towards the agency Tuesday night than she has in the past.
Stevens responded by accusing El-Sayed of using «Republican tactics,» saying a House vote El-Sayed referenced, claiming Stevens «voted to thank ICE and increase their budget,» was a «cynical» move by the GOP to include condemnation for an antisemitic terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado alongside funding for the federal immigration agency.

«There was a bill on the House floor to condemn an antisemitic terrorist attack that in Boulder, Colorado, that killed an individual and injured a Holocaust survivor. Instead of bringing us together, Republicans put in a cynical point about thanking ICE,» Stevens said in response to El-Sayed’s claims she is a supporter of ICE. «I am always going to stand up to violence, and I just wish my opponent wouldn’t pursue the cynical approaches of Republicans when we do need to be united.»
On child care, Stevens pointed to expanding grants and paid family leave, while El-Sayed called for making child care «100% free» and paying for it by taxing billionaire wealth. The debate also featured a lengthy exchange on artificial intelligence and data centers. El-Sayed called for stricter federal guardrails, union labor requirements, community benefit agreements and an «FDA for AI’s,» while Stevens said data centers should be forced to pay utility and water bills, so Michigan families are not stuck with higher costs.
Tuesday night’s debate was held two days after progressive state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, once the third major Democrat in the primary, suspended her campaign.
McMorrow, who has seen her national profile expand in recent years and was running as a progressive in an ideological space between El-Sayed and Stevens, suspended her campaign amid faltering poll numbers and fundraising that weren’t keeping pace with her two main rivals.
McMorrow pledged to fully support whichever Democrat wins the primary and will ultimately face-off with Rogers, who is running for the Senate for a second straight cycle after losing in 2024 to now-Sen. Elissa Slotkin by a razor-thin margin.

Following McMorrow’s exit from the race, Stevens praised her fellow Democrat by calling her an «important voice» for policies that benefit Michigan families. Stevens, who has been backed by millions in super PAC spending, including big bucks from Israel-aligned groups, argued that she is the strongest Democratic candidate to win the primary and defeat Rogers in November.

El-Sayed praised McMorrow for having the «courage» to challenge what he described as a rigged political system, accusing Democratic Party insiders of spending millions to influence the primary. While he did not name specific groups, his remarks appeared to reference corporate PACs and establishment party leaders such as Schumer.
El-Sayed, who, if elected, would make history as the nation’s first Muslim senator, is an epidemiologist who unsuccessfully ran for governor as an insurgent candidate in 2018. He has made support for «Medicare-for-all» a major component of his campaign.
The far-left candidate has also called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and is a vocal critic of Israel amid its war with Hamas — even characterizing Israel’s actions in Gaza as «genocide» against Palestinians. And El-Sayed, who served as a top surrogate on Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, has vowed not to accept PAC donations.

Schumer and the party establishment view Stevens as more electable than El-Sayed, who has sparked controversy with his past comments. They worry that El-Sayed as the party’s nominee would jeopardize the Democrat-controlled Senate seat by pushing the party too far to the left in a state that President Donald Trump carried two years ago by just over one percentage point.
A victory by El-Sayed over Stevens in next month’s primary would give the far left a major win on a statewide stage, and likely further boost their momentum in the battle for the Democratic Party’s future.
On Tuesday night, Stevens leaned into her congressional record, tenure in the Obama administration’s U.S. Auto Rescue Task Force, her manufacturing background, and bipartisan efforts in Congress, including work on legislation aimed at blocking Chinese cars from undercutting American automakers.
«We can build affordable cars here in Michigan without having the Chinese come in and eat our lunch. Not on my watch,» Stevens said.

El-Sayed leaned on being a political outsider who refuses corporate and Super PAC donations, while he pointed to his UAW endorsement and argued that Democrats need to be more aggressive in confronting Wall Street and corporate influence across many areas.
«There’s a reason that the UAW has endorsed me in this race,» El-Sayed said, arguing that corporations are «a lot more interested in a quarterly bottom line than they are in the long term sustainability of manufacturing.»

La madrugada del sábado 18 de julio de 2026, Guatemala fue escenario de una tragedia que sacudió a los sectores político, académico y social del país. Jorge David Calvo Drago, reconocido académico y exviceministro de Desarrollo Sostenible del Ministerio de Energía y Minas (MEM), fue hallado muerto en el interior de su residencia, ubicada en el Condominio Bosques de Alcala I Kanajuyú ll, de la zona 16, de la Ciudad de Guatemala.
El principal sospechoso y único detenido es su propio hijo, quien permanece bajo custodia policial y confesó el crimen al momento de su detención.
De acuerdo con los primeros reportes de la Policía Nacional Civil (PNC), la noche del viernes y las primeras horas del sábado, Calvo Drago y su hijo, identificado como Camilo Roberto Calvo Leiva, de 26 años, compartieron bebidas alcohólicas en la vivienda familiar.
No obstante, una discusión violenta interrumpió la madrugada al extremo que despertó a los vecinos, quienes, al escuchar gritos de auxilio y ruido extremo se acercaron a la residencia del académico, pero nadie les respondió, por lo que optaron por llamar de inmediato a la policía.
Los agentes llegaron después de varias llamadas de alarma. Encontraron frente a la residencia a un aglomerado de personas. Sin embargo, el, ahora detenido, trataba de eludir a los oficiales asegurando que todo estaba en orden y que su papá, estaba descansando; pero no logró su cometido.
Finalmente los policías ingresaron a la residencia se encontraron con una escena de horror. Las manchas de sangre eran evidentes, motivándolos a una inspección exhaustiva del inmueble.
Al revisar una de las habitaciones que funcionaba como comedor, los oficiales encontraron evidencia de violencia y localizaron el cuerpo sin vida de Calvo Drago. Junto al cadáver se hallaba el cuchillo utilizado en el ataque, mismo que servirá como principal prueba material por el Ministerio Público (MP).
Tras verse acorralado con las evidencias, Calvo Leiva decidió confesar. “Manifestó que en horas de la madrugada se encontraba ingiriendo bebidas alcohólicas con su progenitor en el interior del domicilio pero por el calor de los tragos dio lugar a una discusión, posteriormente se agredieron (fisicamente) y terminó hiriéndolo con arma blanca (cuchillo)“, se lee en el parte policial al que Infobae tuvo acceso.
Calvo Leiva es hijo de la víctima. Hasta el momento se desconoce qué motivo la discusión que terminó en la trágica muerte del exfuncionario guatemalteco.
Las autoridades trasladaron a Camilo Roberto Calvo Leiva bajo estricta vigilancia a la Torre de Tribunales, donde inicia el proceso judicial por parricidio.
Actualmente el caso permanece en investigación por parte del Ministerio Público (MP) para esclarecer la raíz de la discusión y determinar si existían antecedentes de violencia intrafamiliar o factores desencadenantes asociados al entorno familiar.
La muerte de Jorge David Calvo Drago deja un profundo vacío en ámbitos profesionales y académicos de Guatemala. Además de su paso por la administración pública, Calvo Drago era consultor internacional, docente universitario e investigador asociado de la Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) y fungió como Viceministro durante la administración de transición de Alejandro Maldonado Aguirre en 2015.
Era catedrático de la Facultad de Ciencias Políticas de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC). Su fallecimiento causó conmoción, por lo que la unidad académica decidió “guardar una semana de duelo”.
Su trayectoria estuvo marcada por una historia de persecución política: en 1984, durante el conflicto armado interno, fue capturado y desaparecido por fuerzas de seguridad clandestinas. Permaneció 49 días en cautiverio junto a su padre, Jorge Roberto Calvo Barajas, quien también fue secuestrado durante la búsqueda de su hijo.
Ambos sobrevivieron al cautiverio inicial y, tras su liberación en abril de 1984, debieron solicitar asilo en la Embajada de Venezuela en Guatemala antes de exiliarse en Honduras. Posteriormente, el Ejército Secreto Anticomunista (ESA) —vinculado a la inteligencia militar— continuó el hostigamiento contra la familia durante su exilio.
La historia de los Calvo Drago representa uno de los episodios más documentados de represión estatal durante la década de 1980. El nombre de Jorge David Calvo Drago aparece en el infame “Diario Militar”, un archivo secreto de inteligencia militar que registró los secuestros, torturas y desapariciones de opositores políticos.
La familia fue obligada al exilio tras sobrevivir a la represión, pero el retorno de la democracia permitió a Calvo Drago reintegrarse al país y desempeñarse en cargos técnicos y viceministeriales.
El caso del “Diario Militar” sigue abierto en la justicia guatemalteca y constituye uno de los principales expedientes sobre delitos contra los deberes de humanidad y desaparición forzada.

A U.S. service member was killed Saturday during an operation involving explosive remnants from a downed Iranian drone in northern Iraq, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Sunday.
A second U.S. service member was also wounded in the incident, officials said.
The announcement came as CENTCOM confirmed unidentified remains were found Sunday during the search for a U.S. service member reported missing in Jordan following a separate Iranian attack on Friday.

According to officials, the incident in Iraq happened after U.S. forces recovered a downed Iranian drone and began handling the explosive material left behind.
«A U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone,» CENTCOM wrote in a post on X.

The military did not immediately release further details about the incident, but said the other service member injured in the operation is receiving medical treatment.
In Jordan, officials said the unidentified remains recovered Sunday will also undergo an examination to determine their identity.
«After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today,» CENTCOM said. «An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing.»

Friday’s Iranian attack on a U.S. base in Jordan killed two U.S. service members, CENTCOM previously said.
Four American service members were also medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals, officials said. They have since been discharged.
«CENTCOM is withholding additional information, including the identities of the missing and fallen warriors, out of respect for the families during the notification process,» the agency said.

Donald Trump buscará robarse todas las miradas con la copa del mundo en la mano: «Es difícil apostar contra Messi»
El presidente estadounidense, Donald Trump, asistirá por primera vez a un partido del Mundial en Estados Unidos, pero eligió el de máximo perfil para ser uno de los grandes protagonistas este domingo de la final entre España y Argentina porque entregará el trofeo al ganador junto al presidente de la FIFA, su amigo Gianni Infantino.
Trump llegó al estadio Nueva York/Nueva Jersey y dijo que aunque no tiene favoritos «es difícil apostar contra Messi». «El presidente de Argentina es buen amigo mío, ha hecho un gran trabajo. Pero lo que puedo decir es que es difícil apostar contra (Lionel) Messi», dijo Trump poco antes del partido a Fox Sports.
«No voy a elegir favoritos. Solo se que no apostaría contra Messi. Es grande«, añadió el mandatario.
Entregar la copa es un gesto inédito que le habilitó el líder del fútbol mundial a Trump, ya que los presidentes del país anfitrión no entregan el trofeo. Pero la estrecha relación entre ambos hará que el jefe de la Casa Blanca ocupe el centro de la escena ante millones de espectadores del planeta.
Trump ama estos shows multitudinarios y ya comenzó a darse cuenta de la masividad que tiene el fútbol a nivel global, pero también en forma creciente en Estados Unidos. Es una forma de tomar protagonismo cuando está en un momento de baja popularidad (38%, según los sondeos), empantanado en la guerra con Irán y complicado con el alza de la inflación. En noviembre hay elecciones legislativas y ser protagonista de un evento de tal magnitud lo energiza.
Ya pudo comprobar el año pasado lo que significa, luego de entregar el trofeo del nuevo Mundial de Clubes en el mismo estadio East Rutherford a los jugadores del Chelsea, una presencia en el podio junto a los jugadores que sorprendió. En ese entonces era tal el entusiasmo de Trump en los festejos con los ganadores que hasta el propio Infantino lo invitó a bajarse del escenario para que pudieran sacarse las fotos oficiales.
Trump ha forjado una gran amistad con Infantino, que se ha convertido un personaje habitual en la Casa Blanca y en actos del gobierno estadounidense que nada tienen que ver con el fútbol, como giras por la paz en Oriente Medio. Tanto que Infantino le entregó un «premio de la Paz Fifa» para suplir el Nobel de la Paz que no recibió.
Trump también llega a esta instancia envuelto en una polémica, porque reveló que llamó a Infantino para pedir que se anulara una tarjeta roja que habían sacado a Folarin Balogun, una estrella de la Selección de Estados Unidos. Esa controvertida decisión permitió al atacante disputar el partido contra Bélgica en octavos de final, finalmente ganado 4-1 por Bélgica.
Pese a un aluvión de críticas, el presidente estadounidense consideró que el Mundial 2026 «ha sido quizás el evento deportivo más exitoso de la historia». «Ha sido increíble», se alegró Trump el viernes durante una recepción de la FIFA en la Trump Tower, en Nueva York.
También afirmó que el Mundial ha contribuido a popularizar el «soccer» en Estados Unidos, donde el béisbol, el básquetbol y el fútbol americano se mantienen como los deportes más seguidos. «Se ha demostrado que somos un país de fútbol y creo que se va a mantener», aseguró Trump.
Trump se sentó en el palco de autoridades principales (tras un vidrio blindado) junto con su esposa Melania e Intantino. Atrás se veía al secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio. No se vio a ninguno de sus hijos, pero extrañaba que no estuviera Barron, el hijo menor del presidente, que jugaba fútbol en la secundaria.
El presidente Javier Milei no asistió a la ceremonia y fue representado por el embajador en Washington, Alec Oxenford.
Por España asistirán el Rey Felipe y la Reina Leticia y el presidente del gobierno Pedro Sánchez, que confirmó asistencia a último momento, a pesar de que suele tener fuertes cruces políticos con Trump, que reprocha a los ibéricos de no haber ofrecido ayuda para la guerra con Irán.
También en tensión por cuestiones arancelarias con Washington, los dirigentes de los países coanfitriones, la presidenta mexicana, Claudia Sheinbaum, y el primer ministro canadiense, Mark Carney, estuvieron presentes en el estadio.
