Identifican a un cubano detenido tras la intercepción de una lancha con migrantes cerca de Key Largo, Florida
Las autoridades federales de Estados Unidos identificaron a Yunio Pelegrin Luis, ciudadano cubano detenido, como uno de los tres acusados tras la intercepción de una embarcación procedente de Bahamas cerca de North Key Largo, en los Cayos de Florida. El operativo ocurrió el 15 de septiembre y permitió localizar a 23 personas a bordo de una lancha que se dirigía hacia el sur del estado.
Según la denuncia penal citada por El Nuevo Herald y retomada por Periódico Cubano, Pelegrin Luis conducía la embarcación en el trayecto desde Bimini. Junto a él fueron detenidos los ecuatorianos William Ortiz Romero, de 32 años, y Flavio Lema Mayancela, quienes también enfrentan cargos federales por presuntamente transportar o inducir la entrada no autorizada de extranjeros a territorio estadounidense.
La acusación contempla una pena máxima de cinco años de prisión. La eventual responsabilidad penal de los tres hombres deberá ser definida durante el proceso judicial, ya que las autoridades deberán presentar pruebas ante un tribunal federal y los acusados conservan la presunción de inocencia hasta que exista una sentencia.
Un radar detectó la ruta desde Bahamas hacia los Cayos de Florida
La investigación señala que el recorrido de la lancha fue detectado por un sistema de radar de la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Palm Beach. A partir de esa alerta, una aeronave de la Oficina de Operaciones Aéreas y Marítimas de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza de Estados Unidos, conocida como CBP, siguió la embarcación durante una operación de vigilancia marítima.
La respuesta incluyó la coordinación entre unidades de CBP en Miami y Key Largo, además de efectivos de la Guardia Costera de Estados Unidos. La intercepción se produjo cerca de Angelfish Creek y Ocean Reef, donde los agentes localizaron una lancha cabinada de 8,2 metros (27 pies) con 23 ocupantes.
La Guardia Costera abordó la nave y realizó el procedimiento sin que se registraran enfrentamientos, según la información conocida sobre el caso. La denuncia federal citada por El Nuevo Herald indica que Pelegrin Luis no contaba con permiso para permanecer en Estados Unidos. El documento judicial también sostiene que Ortiz Romero y Lema Mayancela tenían órdenes de expulsión previas, un elemento incluido en el expediente presentado ante la Justicia federal.
Las autoridades señalaron a los tres detenidos como presuntos responsables de transportar o inducir el ingreso no autorizado de extranjeros. Los otros 20 pasajeros fueron considerados migrantes que intentaban llegar a Estados Unidos por vía marítima desde Bahamas, por lo que quedaron sujetos a los procedimientos establecidos tras la intercepción.
Los pasajeros fueron trasladados a dos buques tras el operativo
Después del abordaje, los 23 ocupantes de la lancha fueron llevados al guardacostas Pablo Valent para completar los trámites correspondientes. Los tres acusados quedaron bajo custodia de Investigaciones de Seguridad Nacional (HSI) mientras continuaba la investigación federal.
Los otros 20 migrantes fueron trasladados posteriormente al buque Margaret Norvell. La Guardia Costera confirmó que ese grupo fue entregado a las autoridades de Bahamas el 21 de septiembre, luego de las actuaciones realizadas por las agencias estadounidenses involucradas en el operativo.
El caso vuelve a situar la atención sobre las rutas marítimas utilizadas para intentar llegar a Florida desde Bahamas. Las autoridades estadounidenses mantienen operativos de vigilancia aérea y naval con el objetivo de detectar embarcaciones antes de que alcancen la costa, mientras la causa contra los tres detenidos continúa ante la Justicia federal.

El frijol nicaragüense que llega a los mercados salvadoreños ilustra el problema de fondo: Centroamérica integró sus mercados agrícolas, pero no construyó los mecanismos para proteger esa integración cuando la crisis golpea a todos los proveedores al mismo tiempo. Así lo plantea un análisis publicado por Divergentes, medio centroamericano de periodismo.
El actual episodio de El Niño funciona como prueba de estrés para todo el modelo regional. La sequía deja al descubierto una contradicción que hasta ahora permanecía oculta: los seis países comercian como un solo bloque, pero responden a las crisis como si fueran economías aisladas.
El comercio regional pasó del 7% al 30% en seis décadas
El intercambio intrarregional representaba apenas el 7% de las exportaciones de la zona en 1960. Hoy esa proporción ronda el 30%, según el análisis de Divergentes.
La cifra convirtió al propio mercado regional en uno de los principales destinos de las exportaciones centroamericanas. Ningún país produce ya de forma aislada: la disponibilidad de frijol en Costa Rica depende de lo que ocurra en Nicaragua, y los precios del maíz en Honduras no responden solo a la cosecha hondureña.
¿Por qué El Niño afecta más a Centroamérica que sequías anteriores? Porque los países que tradicionalmente compensaban las pérdidas de sus vecinos también están golpeados esta vez.
El mecanismo de respaldo regional se debilita justo cuando más se necesita, y eso convierte una sequía localizada en un problema de toda la cadena de suministro.
Nicaragua, el proveedor que ya no puede sostener a la región
El caso del frijol resume la fragilidad del sistema. Nicaragua ha ejercido durante años el papel de principal proveedor regional del grano y compensaba los déficits que aparecían en otros mercados.
Ese respaldo ya no puede darse por seguro. Cuando el país que suele cubrir la escasez enfrenta las mismas limitaciones que sus compradores, la interdependencia deja de operar como ventaja y se transforma en vulnerabilidad compartida, señala Divergentes.
El fenómeno no se limita al frijol. La presión alcanza también a los granos básicos, el café, el ganado y los lácteos, con efectos que llegan hasta las cadenas de procesamiento, los exportadores y los consumidores finales.
Instituciones para comerciar, no para enfrentar la escasez
El diagnóstico central del análisis es directo: la región construyó instituciones para mover mercancías, pero no para administrar crisis alimentarias compartidas. No existe una reserva estratégica regional de alimentos ni protocolos para coordinar políticas de emergencia entre gobiernos.
Ante ese vacío institucional, los incentivos políticos empujan en sentido contrario a la cooperación. Cada gobierno enfrenta la presión de proteger primero a sus propios consumidores y productores, lo que abre la puerta a restricciones de exportación, trabas administrativas o medidas sanitarias con fines proteccionistas.
Estas decisiones no responden necesariamente a una intención de perjudicar a los países vecinos. Surgen de gobiernos que actúan según incentivos nacionales mientras el problema opera a escala regional, según describe el medio.
El riesgo climático se convierte en riesgo empresarial
Para las compañías que operan en la región, la crisis agrícola trasciende la pérdida de cosechas. Implica mayores costos de materias primas, interrupciones logísticas, volatilidad de precios y cambios regulatorios difíciles de anticipar.
Divergentes plantea una batería de medidas pendientes: un sistema regional de alerta temprana que combine datos climáticos, productivos y comerciales, reservas coordinadas de maíz y frijol, protocolos que limiten las restricciones comerciales unilaterales en emergencias y mecanismos de financiamiento que actúen antes de que la pérdida agrícola derive en inflación y conflictividad social.
Nada de esto requiere una integración política profunda ni una nueva burocracia regional. Exige, según el planteamiento, reconocer que la realidad económica ya se integró y que las instituciones deben ponerse a la altura de esa realidad.
Una pregunta que va más allá de los alimentos
La misma tensión que hoy aparece en el sector agrícola se repetirá, advierte el análisis, en la gestión del agua, la energía, las telecomunicaciones y la infraestructura logística. Los riesgos contemporáneos no respetan fronteras, pero las herramientas para administrarlos siguen atadas a ellas.
La sequía actual terminará, como terminaron las anteriores. Pero los fenómenos climáticos extremos seguirán siendo más frecuentes y la volatilidad internacional seguirá presionando la seguridad alimentaria de la región.
La pregunta de fondo, plantea Divergentes, no es cómo responder a este episodio puntual de El Niño. Es si Centroamérica está dispuesta a construir mecanismos permanentes para gestionar vulnerabilidades que ya comparte, o si seguirá funcionando como mercado común solo cuando conviene y como seis economías separadas cuando llegan los riesgos.
La integración económica de la región ya es un hecho consumado. Lo que queda pendiente, según el medio, es decidir si esa integración tendrá una gobernanza a la altura o si Centroamérica esperará a la próxima crisis para recordar, una vez más, que el mercado llegó antes que las instituciones.

Just days after left-wing British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband shook hands with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s top diplomat at the U.N., U.K. authorities arrested five men with possible links to Tehran who allegedly sought to bomb a military base in Fairford used by American forces.
Armed officers arrested the five suspected terrorists who were traveling in three vans reportedly packed with explosive material. The authorities seized the five British nationals and the vans a mere 350 yards from the military base, which is used by the U.S. army to launch air strikes against military targets in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Speaking from London on Monday, Nile Gardiner, the Director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, told Fox News Digital that «I think it is highly likely it was an Iranian orchestrated attack. It is stunning that they have released terrorist suspects on bail. It strikes me as entirely insane. The suspects appear to be Muslim Islamists, judging by the picture.»

Gardiner said, «The British government is on a full appeasement drive toward Tehran. We saw that with Ed Miliband meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister at the U.N. General Assembly. The U.K. does not want to get involved in the U.S.-led war against Tehran.»
He said the current government is a «Socialist appeasement-minded British administration that is incredibly weak on defense and national security.»

A source familiar with the investigation had previously told Reuters that an Iranian-linked motive was considered the most likely, although a Russian sabotage operation or an Islamist plot were also being looked at as possibilities.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump said the suspects were «looking to do big damage.» He added, «We had them under view for a long time, and we got them.»
A spokesperson for Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that «when asked whether President Trump’s comments were accurate, the Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said the Defence Secretary had been asked about them on the morning round and referred journalists to his words. He said the investigation was ongoing, and it would not be appropriate to comment further.»

The U.S. and U.K.-designated terrorist movement, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), put the British government on notice in July that military installations used to attack Iran are legitimate targets for retaliation.
Jason Brodsky, policy director at United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), which tracks Iran’s terrorist and spycraft activities in the United Kingdom, told Fox News Digital, «I believe Iran would have a motive for such a plot. This is because in July, authorities in Cyprus arrested a man accused of spying for Iran at RAF [Royal Air Force] Akrotiri. Iranian officials and media have also pointed to RAF Fairford specifically, dubbing it ‘an important matter for our self-defense’ amid Operation Epic Fury.»

Brodsky added that «Iran has a long history of launching terror plots in the U.K., via its Intelligence Ministry and the IRGC. It has long used criminal gangs as proxies to mask its involvement. So I suspect U.K. authorities are probing these angles as part of the investigation.»
The U.K.’s Counterterrorism Policing Office said that the five suspects were detained on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act and preparation of a terrorist act contrary to Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
Counterterrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans said, «This is a hugely complex and large-scale operation, involving local and national policing, the MOD, and local agencies, who are working together to progress the investigation and support for the community.»

Evans added, «I am very aware of the levels of speculation about the motivation behind this incident, and the geopolitical questions that are being raised.»
According to an X post by the Iranian regime’s Embassy in London, «The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London categorically rejects and strongly condemns the recent unfounded and malicious speculations published by some British individuals and media outlets attempting to link Iran to arrest of five suspects in the vicinity of RAF Fairford base.»
The Iranian Embassy added «The Circulation of such fabricated speculations, particularly in the aftermath of the criminal acts of aggression committed by the United States and the Israeli regime against the Iranian people, will serve no purpose other than to fuel Iranophobia propaganda in the UK. The Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to take appropriate legal measures, as necessary, to safeguard the rights and interests of the country and its people in response to misleading and damaging media narratives.»
Barak Seener, senior fellow at the London-based Henry Jackson Society, told Fox News Digital that «The British government has no sense of how to prioritize its national security interests. While British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the U.N. that the United Kingdom will not tolerate intimidation, threats, or hostile activity on British soil, he was sure to take a friendly picture with him, while purposely avoiding meeting any Israeli representative.»
He added that» Similarly, at the Labour Party conference, Ed Miliband spent 15 seconds on Iran, and close to 4 mins on Israel. This has led to an environment in which a suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford could take place.»

A spokesperson for the British government told Fox News Digital, «The police have issued a statement this afternoon from the head of CTP. We don’t have any further comment at this early stage.»
With respect to the Fox News Digital press query about Miliband’s meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi at the U.N., the British government spokesperson sent Fox News Digital a readout of the meeting, «The Foreign Secretary told Araghchi that Iran should choose de-escalation and diplomacy instead of prolonging the war. He underlined the importance of restoring freedom of navigation and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stressing the impact continued disruption has on global security and economic stability.
«The Foreign Secretary reiterated the UK’s unwavering resolve to combat threats from Iranian-linked groups in UK soil, including attacks on the British Jewish community. The Foreign Secretary made clear that Britain will not tolerate intimidation, threats or hostile activity on UK soil and set out the measures the Government has taken in response. Republicans zero in on key player accused of helping Democrat fundraising giant hide foreign cash
FIRST ON FOX: House Republicans’ investigation into Democrats’ main fundraising platform is heating up on the heels of an explosive report that raised questions about whether left-wing candidates’ campaigns were raking in foreign cash.
Top House GOP committee chairs are summoning ActBlue attorney Ronald Machen for a closed-door interview sometime before Oct. 9, Digital has learned. A letter sent to Machen Monday morning stated that information he previously disclosed to investigators appears to contradict other data that has been collected, specifically on ActBlue’s verification standards for making sure a donor is a U.S. citizen.
«On September 11, 2026, you provided a briefing to the House Administration, Judiciary, and Oversight and Government Reform Committees regarding the accuracy of ActBlue CEO Regina Wallace-Jones’s prior statements to Congress about ActBlue’s donor and passport collection processes,» the letter said.
«Your review appears to be nothing more than an after-the-fact sugarcoating of ActBlue’s misconduct and Ms. Wallace-Jones’s misrepresentations to the House Administration Committee.»

The letter was sent by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., who lead the panels probing ActBlue.

ActBlue is a massive platform for campaigns to raise money that’s used by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and the Democratic leaders of the House and Senate, among others.
Republican lawmakers have long accused the company of having lax verification standards for donors, something ActBlue has said it actively improved since the start of the GOP’s probe. But a new report released earlier this month, first reported by Digital, appears to show employees green-lighting donations despite some questions about where they came from.

Chief among the GOP’s concerns is ActBlue’s passport number verification. According to the report, the field only requires the correct number of characters for a U.S. passport number rather than a valid code for a donation to be accepted.
The Monday letter also points to a 2024 «contemporaneous review by ActBlue’s then-outside counsel, former Biden White House Counsel Dana Remus» which allegedly found «‘a substantial risk that some of the funds’ raised for Democrat campaigns and causes by ActBlue ‘were impermissible contributions from foreign nationals.’»
Remus’ review further found that «passport checks did not always happen» and were «never conducted» when donations were made using third-party fiscal platforms like Apple Pay or PayPal, the letter said.
The Republican chairs said Machen’s prior comments to Congress «conceded that your ‘forensic’ review found that ActBlue processed and accepted donations with foreign indicators even though ActBlue failed to identify a ‘passport number’ or ‘other indicia of eligibility’ for the donor.

«Nonetheless, you defended Ms. Wallace-Jones’s representations to Congress by arguing that ActBlue’s compliance and vetting policy was ‘as close to 100 percent as it could be,’» the letter said.
«Documents produced to the Committees undercut your assertion. These documents demonstrate that if a donor did not have a U.S. passport or a U.S. address, an ActBlue employee retained the ability to determine an ‘alternative method of verifying the [donor’s] citizenship.’ This means an ActBlue employee could put ‘a placeholder,’ including ‘ACTBLUEXX,’ ‘in the passport number field of [the donor’s] ActBlue account.’ The placeholder allows ActBlue to accept all subsequent contributions from the donor without requiring a U.S. passport number.»

The letter said Machen’s review was also limited to 2023, arguing it left out potentially valuable information about 2024.
«As such, the review did not accurately represent the totality of ActBlue’s foreign donation vetting and donor outreach practices during the 2024 election cycle. In fact, documents produced to the Committees show that ActBlue relaxed its vetting practices twice in 2024—data that your narrow ‘forensic’ review did not capture,» the letter said.

It also charged that he disputed Remus’ analysis without going into detail on how he established his own findings.
ActBlue has consistently denied any wrongdoing and dismissed Republicans’ most recent findings in a statement to Digital.
«There’s nothing to see here. After we released findings of a third-party forensic analysis that completely undermined a central claim that they have made against ActBlue, Republicans are refusing to move on,» ActBlue said. «Instead, they are orchestrating another political stunt before rushing out of town weeks early to go campaign. This coordinated campaign against ActBlue isn’t about the facts, or legislating, it’s about Republicans’ efforts to silence organizations they believe threaten their agenda.»
A closed-door interview summons is not the same as a subpoena, which is a legally binding order.
