The Taliban’s supreme leader said Sunday there is «no need» for Western laws in Afghanistan, noting that democracy is dead as long as sharia laws are in place.

Hibatullah Akhundzada was speaking during a sermon marking Eid al-Fitr, an Islamic holiday, at the Eidgah Mosque in the southern city of Kandahar.

«There is no need for laws that originate from the West. We will create our own laws,» Akhundzada said as he emphasized the importance for Islamic laws, according to audio of his message that was published on X by the Taliban government’s chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

The Taliban’s interpretation of sharia has resulted in restrictions for Afghan women and girls, who have been denied an education, working roles in many job fields and from appearing in most public spaces.

These laws have isolated the Taliban in the international community, but they have still been able to establish diplomatic ties with some countries, including China and the United Arab Emirates.

Akhundzada has taken a stronger approach on policy since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in 2021 during the chaotic withdrawal of U.S. and NATO troops from the region, despite some officials initially promising a more moderate government.

The terror group’s supreme leader criticized the West in his remarks on Sunday by saying non-believers were unified against Muslims and that the U.S. and other countries were united in their hostility toward Islam, pointing to the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Akhundzada said democracy had come to an end in Afghanistan and sharia was in effect. He also argued that supporters of democracy were attempting to separate the people from the Taliban government.

The Taliban have no credible opposition inside or outside the country, although some senior figures within the government have criticized the leadership’s decision-making process and concentration of power in Akhundzada’s circle.

Some Taliban members want greater engagement on the world stage and to eliminate harsher policies to attract more support from outsiders.

In recent months, there has been increased engagement between the Taliban and the U.S. under President Donald Trump, mostly due to prisoner exchanges and releases.

A Palestinian man protesting Hamas, the terror group that rules the Gaza Strip, was fatally tortured, with his body left on his family’s doorstep as a warning to others who are thinking of publicly opposing the organization. 

Uday Al Rabay, 22, was beaten and died after participating in an anti-Hamas protest in the Palestinian territories last week, said a senior officer affiliated with the opposition Fatah party, The New York Post reported.

«Uday was martyred by the criminals of Hamas. And what’s his crime? He told the truth, because he refused to be silent on injustice, because he did not kneel to Hamas,» said Mazen Shat, a police officer linked to Fatah, to the Telegraph.

Rabay was targeted allegedly after pictures purportedly of him were shared on the Telegram messaging app. He was allegedly kidnapped after the protest last week. 

«Hamas is oppressing people in a brutal way,» Shat said. «Like a puppy [with] a rope around his neck, they dragged [Uday’s body] to the door of his house and told his family that this is the punishment for those who complain about Hamas.»

Protests against Hamas happened in Gaza after Israel resumed its bombing of the territory following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire between Hamas and the Jewish state. 

Israel has bombarded Gaza since, prompted backlash against Hamas. 

«People have been under Israeli bombing since October 2023, they don’t want the war to continue by all means,» said Sam Habeeb, a London-based Gazan, to the Telegraph.

Protesters have called for Hamas to be removed from power.

«The people do not want the rule of Hamas. The rule of Hamas is over,» a protester said, according to the Akron Jewish News. «This Hamas rule has destroyed us, killed us and displaced all the people.»

Diecinueve miembros del equipo de béisbol Team Guevara de Venezuela solicitaron asilo político en la ciudad de Barcelona, España. Fue luego de que su entrenador los abandonara en ese país en el marco de una gira que realizaban por la península ibérica.

El equipo fue acompañado por el coach y presidente del club, Julio Guevara, quien regresó a Caracas por cuestiones de salud y dejó varado al plantel en Madrid.

El 12 de marzo, Guevara había publicado en su red social de Instagram (julioguevara.beisbol) un reel anunciando la llegada del equipo a España. En el video se ve a los jóvenes con sus valijas caminando y él, en primer plano de selfie. Acompañó el posteo con la descripción: «Los Guerreros de La Liga Senior Latinoamericana Sub 23 llegando a Europa a competir 2025″.

Medios españoles afirmaron que los deportistas tenían previsto el vuelo de regreso a Caracas este lunes, pero después de deambular por las calles de Barcelona decidieron quedarse en el país. Finalmente se presentaron todos juntos este lunes a las inmediaciones de la Policía Nacional en la ciudad catalana y solicitaron asilo, un trámite que requiere de un proceso largo, pero según describió el diario La Vanguardia, quienes trabajan en Protección Internacional de la Brigada de Extranjería, aceleraron los tiempos y convocaron a los venezolanos este jueves en una comisaría de Barcelona, donde deberán manifestar los motivos de su solicitud.

Hay datos que todavía se desconocen, como el momento en el que los jóvenes viajaron hasta Barcelona. Al parecer, dos de ellos serían menores de edad y fueron atendidos por el Servicio de Atención a Inmigrantes, Emigrantes y Refugiados (SAIER), mientras que los agentes policiales trabajaron durante toda la mañana del lunes buscando lugar para los mayores porque no había cupo disponible para ellos.

Según el cronograma de partidos que iban a disputar, tenían partidos en Barcelona y Madrid y también en Italia. El partido de béisbol en la capital española se suspendió porque las condiciones climáticas no permitieron que se juegue y, según narraron los jugadores, llegaron a jugar solo una vez en Barcelona, pero no recuerdan el nombre del equipo al que se enfrentaron.

Además, los miembros de Team Guevara que se acercaron a pedir el asilo indicaron que Guevara les aseguró sentirse mal y que tenía un sarpullido por el que viajó hasta Caracas y los dejó varados en el aeropuerto de Madrid, sitio en el que pasaron algunas noches, detalló la prensa española.

La duda se centra en la salida que buscaron los beisbolistas, que no recurrieron a su embajada o consulado. Es presumible que hayan aprovechado la instancia para intentar abandonar su tierra, bajo el régimen chavista de Nicolás Maduro. En los últimos años, España ha registrado un aumento de solicitantes venezolanos de asilo, quienes en 2024 volvieron a liderar las peticiones, representando 63,5% del total según la agencia alemana DW.

Según la reconstrucción cronológica de redes sociales del entrenador Guevara, había publicado el line up de los jugadores para enfrentar a San Lázaro el 23 de marzo. El día anterior publicó dos videos en Instagram con un «consejo»: «Lo que nosotros sembramos ahorita, lo cosechamos mañana. El día de hoy te invito para que tú puedas seguir adelante. Te repito, apartate de ese sistema putrefacto que no te trae nada bueno», mencionó mientras caminaba por las calles.

«Llegó la hora mi gente, llegó la hora. El mundo ha cambiado. Nosotros estamos a 8.500 kilómetros de nuestra casa y seguimos para adelante, buscando la gloria, buscando ayudar a nuestros muchachos que salgan adelante porque en realidad el Team Guevara trabaja en la generación de relevo», comentó en otro video de redes sociales. El día 27 de marzo mostró, a través de un Tik Tok, cómo entrenaban sus jugadores. Esa fue la última aparición en las redes del entrenador.

Los investigadores están tratando de contactar a Julio Guevara para ver si hay algún motivo de investigación en las razones del pedido de asilo. Aún no saben nada del paradero del entrenador.
